I would like to run all my programs directly from the start screen, not switching to desktop view. My friend has Windows 8 and he is running everything directly from start screen mode. I have Win 8.1 and I don't want to go to the desktop mode since then programs run under desktop and loose the functions available in start screen mode.
View 5 RepliesI've tried just about everything, but can't seem to find a setting to stop this action. The screen on my laptop (Sony Flip 15A, intel4400/geforce735) seems to increase and decrease in brightness between screens. It's rather annoying not just because of the change, but also because it takes several seconds to occur and it occurs in discrete steps. I'm running the latest drivers from both intel and nvidia. I've tried turning off adaptive brightness and disabling the sensor service, and all effects (fade in, UAC, etc) have been turned off. A video of the condition is shown below:

It even happen when no programs are opening/closing - for example, if I view a dark background web page and then a lighter background, the brightness shifts. I can't imagine how awful this will be in photoshop.
Since updating to 8.1 my apps don't open in start screen.. I click on the app..the screen goes directly to the desktop and the blank app screen sits in the desktop tool bar. I can't open any of the programs. I have a Gateway ZX6980 ..
View 1 Replies View RelatedUnder 8.0 Pro, as I added traditional desktop applications (i.e., Office 2013), the install would create both shortcuts in the traditional program menu as well as Tiles on the Metro start screen. After upgrading (in-place) to 8.1 Pro, all of the traditional applications and their shortcuts in the traditional program menu were still there, but the Tiles on the Metro start screen were gone.
How can I recreate Metro Tiles for my traditional desktop applications?
Blackscreen after login, no start, no taskbar, no desktop, but I can run applications using task manager.
I tried running explorer.exe, but nothing happened. Neither can i run control pannel (::{26EE0668-A00A-44D7-9371-BEB064C98683} No such interface supported).
I also tried using the command line sfc /scannow in safe mode but it still cannot solve the problem. It seems that some services or process died.
When modern Apps are closed, they can be made to close to the Start Screen. Is there a way of making Desktop programs do the same. For example: Firefox, my word processor etc.?
View 4 Replies View RelatedAlways keep a list of disabled services as you disable them! I spent a dramatic amount of time referencing 2-3 resources for each service I disabled and have had no issues up until now. I disabled a few in a row without restarting and managed to forget which they were. this has caused two issues If I can't/don't - the end result will be me having to reset them all to default, go through them one by one again - AND STILL not know which was the one(s) that caused my problem(s) which will risk the same thing happening again.
1) I set an account picture to my Microsoft.net account for windows 8.1x64 (the one that pops up when you turn on your PC and have to enter your password right after the lock screen but before windows) and after a restart, it disappears and goes back to the default grey square with a white outline of an avatar)
2) all my installed programs disappeared on the start screen! It's literally blank. I didn't have much due to it being a fairly new install but they all disappeared including PC settings and metro store (the two metro apps I had left). I checked if the apps still worked (mumble for example because it also disappeared) and they did, but if you go under program data/start menu/programs etc, all the folders with the app shortcuts in them are gone!
I tried to reinstall mumble; and it reinstalled fine, but still NO folder w shortcut being placed in the start menu therefore nothing being put on the start/apps screen. What on earth could be doing this service wise?

View 3 Replies View RelatedA few weeks ago, after using the computer for some time, (The problem doesn't start until a few hours later) my programs won't start up unless running as administrator. All programs. Including notepad. (not sure about cmd) I have not done a full scan on my computer because it estimates more than one day and the estimated time still extends.
View 4 Replies View RelatedFor example it starts SpeedFan without any problem, and with same settings, or even in the same Task, if I add for example other .exe software like FTP server software Gene6 FTP Server it simply doesn't start for any reason and nothing happens and it has to be started manually by mouse-clicking on .exe each time computer is booted up.
On Last Run Result column it says 0x800702E4. And it gives various 0x results for various programs that don't run.
Also simply dragging shortcuts to Startup folder don't work either. But like I said, not all .exe programs, some work and some don't, just like 50/50 I simply don't get it.
I use Comodo Antivirus and ZoneAlarm firewall, but all those programs I need has 100% permissions granted.
I have a problem which started recently. The problem is that everything closes unexpectedly. I am using the classic desktop environment to use this system and all the 'apps' I use a classing Windows programs.
Randomly all of the programs that are running on the machine close down without warning (And I mean ALL of them, even explorer.exe). I know that this has not been caused by a recent installation of a program as I have not installed anything recently. I also checked the computer with an Anti-Virus software as that could have been a cause but there wasn't anything.
When I am in my start screen and I touch my desktop tile to get into my desktop I don't get into it. I either get into IE or into the last website I have been in and not closed. Can I sort this out?

I've tried Recuva to see if I could still recover the file, and searched the internet and the installation disk. Unfortunately, the file it is nowhere to be found... After start-up and when I click on the desktop tile, my windows 8.1 HP Envy laptop flickers between the Start up screen with all the tiles to the desktop then to a blue screen then back to the Start up Screen with all the tile and so on.
Can't seem to get off that merry go-round. HP Tech support has me hitting the F11 key to get me to recovery manager so I can back up my files.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have just bought a new laptop with windows 8 and actually quite like the tile setup!Some programs I need to use are on the desktop and I regularly need to switch between desktop and start screen views. All I want to do is have an on screen 'windows button' that will take me from the desktop back to the start screen with a click of the mouse, as opposed to having to physically push the keyboard button.
I know this is ultimately lazy, but surely it should be simple and sometimes a mouse click is just so much easier than pushing the button!
How can I hide the Windows 8 "Start" screen ?.
Presently at boot, 4 steps to get to desktop ...
1. Time and date screen > Left click

This is rather ironic. Most people complain about booting to the new Start page and want to boot the the Desktop. I would rather boot the new Start page but my new Asus Windows 8 computer boots to the start page initially but after about three seconds automatically goes to the desktop.

This is a simple executable shortcut that you can pin to the taskbar or use on the desktop to enter the Start Screen, the only reason I made this is for use with Tihiy's StartIsBack as he enabled the Right Win Key to enter the Modern UI Start Screen instead of the Desktop Start Menu, unfortunately I don't have a Right Windows key so this seemed like a good solution instead of having to use the Charms Bar.

I was messing around with the Win 8.1 preview in a VM tonight and noticed that you can have the Desktop Mode opened half screen along with Modern UI apps on the other half of the screen. I haven't heard about this capability, only 2 Modern UI apps sharing the screen at any one time.

About three days ago, all new style apps stopped working. I click on the tile, get a deep blue screen, and nothing else. On the left side of the screen, I can see the app as if it is working (just the name of the app, not content), so I can close the window and get back to desktop. The same applies to the STORE app. The only tiles that work, are the links to desktop applications, which open correctly on the desktop. The fault also affects all windows system apps. For example if I search on the start screen for "windows update", I can access "Windows update" as it just opens a window on the desktop, but if I click on "Windows update settings" nothing happens. The same is true with all windows system apps that open in the new start screen system.
I've uninstalled two Microsoft updates that were installed over the past three days, no change. I uninstalled AVAST, no change, so I reinstalled it! I tried restoring the system, but found that I had only one restore, and that was corrupted. Very strange. Without access to many windows system apps, the computer is really limited. The desktop seems to be working OK. I can't refresh the PC, as firstly it is a system app that runs from the start screen, and secondly because I upgraded from win 8 to 8.1 online, this can't be done anyway, as I don't have a disc. I'm really trying to avoid reinstalling windows 8!

After upgrading to 8.1 it stopped doing that. Now after I install an app I have to search for it and right click and tell it to pin to the start. View 9 Replies View RelatedI upgraded to the CP a few days ago and just noticed a huge problem. The "Show Desktop" tile that is normally on the start screen be default has gone missing. I can't figure out how I got rid of it in the first place, but is there some way to add it back?
I have changed the title to more accurately reflect the problem. A bunch of the features that come with Windows 8 CP (the tablet friendly Settings page, Remote Desktop, the show desktop tile, The Windows Store, etc) all vanished shortly after I installed Windows 8. I tried reinstalling and the same thing happened again.
Boot Direct to Desktop. I found this in a Windows 8 book in the Start Screen Store. If you want to boot directly into the desktop without passing thru the Start Screen
-Go to the start screen & type in schedule to search for Schedule Task in Settings.
-Click on Task Scheduler Library in the left pane, and select Create Task in right pane.
-Name your task something like Boot to desktop.
-Now select the Triggers tab, choose New, and use the drop-down box to select starting the task At log on.
-Click OK and go to the Actions tab, choose New, and enter explorer for the Program/Script value.
-Press OK, save the task, and restart to test it out.
