When I play games or use any sort of full screen program, it refuse to stay in full screen and flickers to the desktop after a 10-30 minute period...I'm aware this is probably another program trying to take control, but I can't seem to pin it down. I've tried disabling startup programs through task manager and I've also tried ending background process, with no success.

Unfortunatly it's a cruddy Metro UI version and not a real desktop application. I had to use a tile manager tool called OblyTile v0.9.8 to be able to make a desktop shortcut because I don't a truck with 8.1 That tool is here btw: [APP] OblyTile - Tile Creator for all programs. - xda-developers
Now I want this app to run in a window instead of fullscreen. An app like this.. i don't get it.. why leave it full screen when you have to multitask? I'd like to run this in a custom sized window that I can tell to always stay on top of other apps.
Is there a way to do this?
I don't know if this is a Windows issue or just an issue with my software but I was using Corel Paint shop pro x6 and I'm not sure what I did but after opening files or using the save to option several times, all of a sudden the window started opening full screen and there doesn't seem to be any way to minimize it.
I tried to see if I could at least drag it some place but it won't move. I tried going to every side and corner to see if I could resize it that way but nothing happens. This is the only program that opens my folders in full screen so perhaps it has nothing to do with Windows but how I can get my folders to open in a small screen where you can move them over or out of the way of something you might be looking at.
I just bought a Microsoft wireless mouse for my ASUS notebook as I have it connected to my tv via hdmi and wanted to be able to browse the net and control other things from my sofa rather than sitting on the floor! (as the hd cable is v short)
If Im using the mouse, how would I get the onscreen keyboard to stay onscreen so I can type? my laptop is touchscreen and the keyboard only pops up when I tap the screen....
I would like to run all my programs directly from the start screen, not switching to desktop view. My friend has Windows 8 and he is running everything directly from start screen mode. I have Win 8.1 and I don't want to go to the desktop mode since then programs run under desktop and loose the functions available in start screen mode.

View 2 Replies View RelatedIve been having this problem for many months now. It started with a game called Arma3. At the time i thought it was the game that was the issue but i soon found out it was my PC.
for the rest of this thread when i say a program "freezes" what i mean is:
-The program first freezes then in the task manager the program slowly drops down to 0% CPU usage
-Sometimes the memory usage also goes down by a little bit.
-While in the frozen phase it either stays at 0% CPU usage or goes up and down between 0% and 1%.
-The length of this frozen phase varies a bit from program to program but its roughly between 5-10 minutes
The problem is games that have multiplayer crash as soon as i try to access the multiplayer. for example when i click multiplayer on the menu(in Arma3) it freezes for about 5 minutes. it then unfreezes and returns to normal loaded and the server list comes up and i can connect to a server, at which point the problem occurs again but for a shorter amount of time.
Some other Games/Programs that this happens to are:
-Battlefield 3
-Battlefield Hardline
-XPlane Flight Simulator
-War Thunder(Launcher, i cant even get into the game)
-Men Of War: Assault Squad
-Some Downloaders/Installers(when using ftp, i think)
-SkyDrive
Networking Games/Programs that it doesnt happen to are:
-Internet Browsers(Chrome,IE)
-Minecraft
-Teamspeak 3
-Visual Studio
-Most Downloaders/Installers
This problem only occurs on my PC and i have two other people in my house that have the same installation of windows 8 and are on the same network, who have never had this problem. I know the easy solution would be to reinstall windows but i dont want to have to do that and i have a problem with the windows key i bought and i wouldn't be able to activate it again(legally).

Recently my mom visited a website that tricked her. She downloaded and installed some stuff she didn't need. I removed the stuff but noticed some other problems. I'm not sure if these are new problems caused by the useless stuff she installed.
Control Panel -> Programs -> Programs and Features is not showing all installed programs. Oddly, the only listed installed programs have names that start with the letter M. 14 programs are listed. See picture. Start Menu -> All Programs -> I suspect some programs are missing. I have a Win 7 style Start menu because I am using IObit's Start Menu 8 program. Control Panel -> System and Security -> Administrative Tools was empty. I fixed that by using SFC /SCANNOW.
I tried using System Restore to go back to an earlier date, but that didn't work. In the process of trying to do that I discovered that BitDefender Internet Security 2014 doesn't get along with Windows 8.1's System Restore feature. I uninstalled BitDefender and successfully went back to an earlier date but still had the same problems with missing programs. I undid the restore. I created a new Windows user account. The new account had the same issues: missing programs in the Start menu and Programs and Features menu.
I have a brand new Dell M6700 laptop with Windows 8, which seems to have an extremely annoying bug or feature. While working I usually have many windows open in desktop mode, such as Visual Studio, Outlook, remote desktop etc. Every now and then some of the windows decides to stay on top of the window stack. This could be a nice feature in some cases, but usually it is just bloody annoying, as e.g. when creating new email the new mail window may be buried under Outlook itself, which has for some reason decided to stay on top.
This staying-on-top behavior has occurred with multiple software including windows explorer, remote desktop, outlook and visual studio. So far I have not been able to figure out how to reproduce this, it seems to happen randomly. Usually the software has to be restarted to resume normal behavior, but at least once the window has resumed normal behavior without restarting.
Is this is a normal feature in Windows 8? Is there some weird keystroke or gesture which I happen to activate without knowing it? Could it be some third party software, which might be already installed on brand new Dell laptops? I know there are some software to force windows to stay on top, but I have not installed such.
I am having sign in problems with the Windows 8 Games, Music, and Video Apps. This have been happening ever since I started using Windows 8. I have tried reinstalling Windows many time, and also tried it on Windows 8.1, none of them allowed me to sign in.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI sometimes experience crashes when playing some games, which is perfectly normal and I can understand that no program can ever be 100% crash proof, but I have noticed some really annoying behaviour during and after a crash.
With many games, when they crash from a full screen window they often cause the window switching behaviour to stop working, starting task manager to close the program is nearly always impossible because I cant switch to it. Any error dialogues, with important information, cant be viewed because all I can see is a blank black/white window, which cant be closed or interacted with in any way.
Often I find myself struggling to close a crashed app, and resort to logging off or even restarting sometimes.
Things I try that rarely work:
-Trying to even switch window.
-Trying to use task manager.
-Right clicking on the taskbar icon to close (doesn't close the app when pressed)
How it is caused and is there anyway to get rid of it?
Whenever I load up Starcraft 2 or TombRaider for example, games that go full screen on my PC, I lose my internet connection. When it comes to Starcraft 2, You need an internet connection to play. I don't know what to do and I've been trying to google up a solution without much success. I have Windows 8 Home Basic and a Netis WF-2117 Wireless PCI adapter.

In Windows 8, I opened for the first time a video, with the video app.
It opens in full, maximized screen.
In Win7, for example, when opening a video (with WMV) the usual minimize, maximize/adjust size buttons appear in the upper right corner of the active window.
I want to be able to click on, with my mouse, the maximize button (wherever it is) and adjust the size of my active window.
How do I do this in Windows 8?
I'm running with Windows 8.1 and still trying to get used to it, my issue now is that on some but not all videos on FB that I try to view in fullscreen it only last a matter of seconds before freezing up automatically going wacko back to the original posting and then scrolls on it's own...........

View 7 Replies View RelatedOn my desktop computer, when I try viewing youtube videos (and videos from some other sources) full screen, the toolbar across the bottom of screen in the desktop mode remains visible, blocking my view of (and use of) the player controls at bottom of the youtube player. All I can see is the seek bar moving as the video plays. If I put the toolbar in the AutoHide mode, then I can see (and use) the youtube player controls.
On my laptop with Windows 8, this problem does not exist. The entire player appears normally as if there were an "always on top" mode.
One difference is that the laptop had Windows 8 factory installed, while I installed Windows 8 over XP in my desktop. (That $39 deal offered at the beginning of the year was too good to pass up). Both computers have x64-based processors.
Computer comparisons:
Laptop: Samsung; AMD A6-4400M APU with Radeon HD Graphics, 2.70 GHz; 4.00 GB RAM, 64-bit OS
Desktop: Homebuilt; AMD Athlon Dual Core Processor 5050e; ATI Radeon 3000 Graphics (with latest driver); 2GB RAM; 32-bit OS
Neither computer has the toolbar in the AutoHide mode.
On some sites with the desktop computer, when I move the mouse pointer toward the left edge of the player, the seek bar retracts and I can't grab it to drag it to the right. I don't know the if laptop also has this problem.

Seems to happen at no particular pattern, usually takes around 10 minutes before I am minimized to desktop. I even tried turning UAC off and all of the auto updates. what this is happening? The only workarounds I have is to run in windowed full screen which has a lower framerate on average.
Shift and f11 used to give me a full screen using windows 7. How do I do using 8?

I have two monitors and have my desktop going across both monitors the way I like it. However when you click on a windows 8 tile, the screen it brings up fills both monitors. its annoying because whatever I am viewing is centered down the middle of two monitors and trying to read it is awful. I want to be able to set the window size that appears after clicking a tile to be half a screen (only one monitor). How to accomplish this? I have the game Hoyle Card Games running on a tablet with Windows 8. When the game starts, it opens in a full screen graphical layout and asks for a username, but I don't know how to get the keyboard up to type my name.
