Maintenance :: Small Programs Taking Up Large Amounts Of HDD Space
Jan 28, 2013Recently I've encountered a problem whilst trying to clean up my HDD (it was filling up way too quickly and I wanted to get rid of some unwanted games/programs), and I noticed a problem with file sizes of even small programs.
For a start, I am a massive FSX simmer, so that's why there's so many FSX addons in my screenshots.
Anyway, I use "iOBit System Care 6 Ultimate" to clean up my laptop, and I was trying to use the inbuilt uninstaller to get rid of some programs. This is what happened:
Now, I know that all those programs DO NOT take up that much HDD space, considering the hard drive in this laptop is currently only 500GB. I can almost guarantee those programs DO NOT take up those huge amounts because 1: They are reasonably small addons and 2: Because on my old laptop, they never took up that much space.
So I also tried Revo Uninstaller, and this was the result:
Now, notice the top result? The "Carenado Cessna Skylane HD Series FSX"? Well, that's DEFINITELY not 50GB, that's 100% wrong in all fronts. I took a screenshot to prove so:

So, last but not least, here's my HDD space/free space:
Note that only the "Windows C: and Recovery Drive F:" are part of the HDD, the other partitions are part of my external 1TB HDD.
Weirdest part is that, the files DON'T take up that much space when I right click - properties in Windows Explorer. Now, I'm not sure what's the go but it's definitely odd. I can't get legitimate sizes from neither Revo or iOBit, and it's really annoying.
Also, programs like "Alan Wake" and "Adobe Master Collection Creative Suite 6" show up as the normal file size, yet ANY Flight Simulator X addon shows up as a huge amount?
How To Change Large Number Of File Names
Sep 20, 2013I have a directory in which I have a large number of genealogical records, 756 to be exact. The files are numbered FIN_1881_001_001 to FIN_1881_001_756.
Due to an error when saving these files, I need to change these 756 file numbers to FIN_1891_001_001 to FIN_1891_001_756.
Is there any easy way of doing this without having to change each file name individually.

Feb 4, 2013I have a Lenovo Z580 running Windows 8 on a 256 GB SSD, which was cloned from the original drive using Paragon cloning software. I got the computer up and running about a month ago, and I started personalizing it by installing programs and such. At the beginning of today, I probably had around 25 GBs left of storage, which may not seem like much but it will last me until I need to be done with this computer.
Today I went to download a 5 GB zipped folder used to install MATLAB via a licensed, legit website (student license). I check after it downloads and I have roughly 20 GB left on my disk. Note that every other program I have installed has had no trouble with Windows 8 (including Mathematica), so I assumed MATLAB wouldn't either. I hit the setup button, and nothing seems to come up. I hit it again and this time it says something like "not allowed to create destination." So then I tried cutting and pasting it to the desktop, but there was some error with that too. I tried to use the setup application in other ways, and it still didn't work.
I then checked my free disk space and I had 100 MB of free space left. Uhm WHAT?! What the hell just happened?! I search through pretty much ALL my file folders to see what was newly written and see if I could find a TWENTY GIGABYTE folder that was created today. I couldn't find anything. What I think happened was that the setup application unpacked a bunch of files from the compressed folder SOMEWHERE on my disk, EACH TIME I hit setup. THEN it would hit a snag, for some reason, and stop the setup, and NOT delete the temporary files.
SO my next step was to use the "Disk Cleanup" option, to see if the theoretical temporary files could be deleted that way. It gets to the list and I discover that the "Temporary files" option is an INCREDIBLE 98.6 GB size. UHM WHAT?! How is it possible that my OS thinks it can safely delete nearly 100 GBs of data off my 256 GB hard drive?! What is it deleting exactly? Let's assume that 20 GB was in there; that still means it's deleting almost 80 GBs. I couldn't believe that. So obviously I haven't deleted that yet, because I fear that it thinks some of my programs, or maybe even the OS itself, is a bunch of temporary files. I don't even know. I do have a 30 GB recovery partition, so maybe that 30 is included in that, but EVEN THEN 50 GBs is a TON to be in temporary files.
My question: is there any way to check what will be deleted in the option "Temporary files" and why is my temporary files 38% of my entire drive? Also, what happened with the 20 GBs?
I labelled it urgent because I need to install MATLAB to use it for HW, but I can't. Well I think I can find another way to use it, however I still need this problem fixed ASAP because I need space on my computer to do stuff in general.

I upgraded from XP-32 To Win 8 Pro-64. My RAID drive "C:" had ~60 GB on it with XP. After the move to Win 8 Pro, C: had ~70 GB. After running Win 8 for about 1-1/2 months drive C: is suddenly almost full. 4.5 GB free space. Now I'm getting weird errors and an occasional disk full notice. What happened?
8.1 - Number Of Opened Windows (Combine When Taskbar Is Full)
Jul 7, 2014I used to have Vista, when I had multiple windows open in an application (and they were combined in the taskbar) the number of windows used to be displayed next to the icon. Now I have Windows 8.1, this feature seems to have disappeared and the only way I can see how many windows are open is to manually count them one-by-one. The only difference when the application combines the windows is that is looks to have 3 windows combined on the right hand side of the application in the taskbar.
Is there any way to get this number back? I think this feature may have been removed from 8.1, but if it has is there a workaround?

Mar 3, 2013One of my favorite features of Windows Explorer was that it told me the free disk space in the status bar. Since Windows Vista, you also had the ability to see the free space on hard drives across the network.
Now in Windows 8 you can't even in the least see the free space on the status bar of your own pc, let alone those across the network, and for someone who's constantly moving files across my home network, it's becoming a bit of a hassle.
I don't think there's away to to restore this functionality (already installed the ClassicShell program) so absent of that, is there a free disk space monitoring tool recommended? I'm mainly looking for one that has a system tray function that can tell me the amount of free space I have left, either in percentage form, or megabyte form, or gigabyte form, whatever.
Maintenance :: Error Creating Backup Image / Not Enough Disk Space
Aug 12, 2013Since a week is it impossible to make a Win7 Backup Image (Control Panel).
This is the feature that got removed in 8.1 but now (on 8) I'm still using it in case I need to restore the OS.
The message shows this:
"Not enough disk space" but I have 360GB free on one disk and 150GB on another. The image is calculated at 67GB and it worked each time until now.
All OS updates installed.

Sep 15, 2014I have just done a clean install of 8.1 on my old MacBook Pro as I broke the screen on my normal laptop. I could only afford to give 40GB to this new installation so I'm quite tight for space.
I've always used [URL] .... to check for disk usage but in my case it is not useful as it shows size of items not the size on disk. I have to keep my OneDrive files on-line only to save space but as they are reported as part of used disk space I am seeing 150% of my disk space is used which isn't useful really. In Disk Management I can see it is only 59%.
Any utility like WinDirStat that shows size on disk?

Jan 1, 2014I am having trouble with a message in Action Center in Windows 8.1. It is saying "Check Backup Disk Space" and I cannot hide the message. I had Windows 7 File Recovery setup with Windows 8.1, but now after the upgrade, the message is "stuck." Can this be fixed? These two links explain it perfectly:

Maintenance :: Disk Usage And CPU Reach 99% When Running Certain Programs
Jan 7, 2014My Disk Usage and CPU columns of the task manager randomly jump up to 99% or even sometimes 100% which is unresponsive. This seems to happen more often when I run programs such as a malware scanner or League of Legends. My FPS in League stays around 1 when I do try to play and I'm assuming this is a related issue.

I have 115 GB on the partition, and when I totaled all the files in my Bootcamp drive it comes to a total of about 80 GB, 50 from games, 20 from the OS. I installed Windows ADK to enable EasusToDo imaging software to create a boot disk.
This has left 3 folders about 3Gb in size in my c:usersmeappdatalocal emp folder
I have therefore very little free space left on the C drive.
The folder attributes are read only.
I as an administrator user have full access rights (confirmed in folder Properties) but when I try to delete the folders the error message asks for permission from me to delete. I give this permission, then it refuses, stating Try Again as it need permission from me.
This computer does not recognise boot CDs even though the BIOS order is set correctly. I was hoping to remove files using an Ubuntu live boot CD.
Windows Disk Cleanup utility just stalls - presumably it also cannot delete these files.

May 13, 2014It seems as if my computer is using way too much RAM for some reason. I currently have 6GB of RAM installed. As soon as I start my computer up, I'm greeted with this warning:

No process is using up any amount of RAM to come close the above number. The most RAM using is 70mb or so from Google Chrome while typing this post. Clicking on the performance tab of task manager gives me this information:
I haven't downloaded anything recently. I had this exact problem a few weeks ago and a system restore fixed it but I'm not wanting to wait on the computer to restore again or for this problem to just come back again. I'm running Windows 8 on a Toshiba Satellite L875D-S7332.

Nov 4, 2013My computer started freezing while downloading large files in uTorrent, About 10 minutes after starting uTorrent the PC starts to be really really slow and 1 minute after it freezes, only restarted/shutdown solve the problem, I've been using uTorrent for years and never had this problem, I mean it happens when I download a 15GB movie, but two months ago I downloaded a 170GB TV series and no problems were with that.

When the installation was finished I had 179GB of free space showing on the 200GB drive C: partion.
I just finished downloading and installing 111 recommended Windows updates and I now have only 164GB of free space showing on drive C:

Disk Space Usage Bars In My Computer Are Missing
Nov 21, 2012For some reason, the disk space usage bars in 'My Computer' are missing. Although they should be visible in 'tile view', I can only see the drive icons, not the bars. Interestingly, When I open a file in e.g. Word I can see the bars in the open file dialog (also in 'tile view'). I've already tried resetting the folder view settings, but without any luck.

Feb 6, 2013On January 31st, I bought a product key for Win 8 Pro paying $40. I downloaded the Windows.iso that came with the purchase. Afterwards, I burnt the Windows.iso to two separate DVD Roms, opening the ISO with Windows Disk Image Burner.
When one of the two DVD Roms is opened, the program setup.exe presents itself, together with about 9 folders and files. (Please see the attachment, showing the contents of the DVD Rom.)
Setup.exe is obviously the trigger for installing Win 8.
My question is: Will this trigger (setup.exe) install the full Win 8 operating system, using what is stored on the DVD Rom, plus perhaps elements downloaded from the internet during the installation process? Or must I have installation elements on my hard drive, downloaded during the purchase, in addition to the DVD Rom?
In other words, is the DVD Rom burnt from the ISO the "full" Windows 8, the only thing I need apart from my product key, to install Win 8?
