View 1 RepliesUnder 8.0 Pro, as I added traditional desktop applications (i.e., Office 2013), the install would create both shortcuts in the traditional program menu as well as Tiles on the Metro start screen. After upgrading (in-place) to 8.1 Pro, all of the traditional applications and their shortcuts in the traditional program menu were still there, but the Tiles on the Metro start screen were gone.
How can I recreate Metro Tiles for my traditional desktop applications?
I went into This Computer and went to my C: drive to attempt to clean things up and make my system run faster by compressing files to save space. Unfortunately, I clicked some of the wrong stuff and hid data that I'm pretty sure the computer thinks is important, and now my Metro tiles are missing.
View 3 Replies View RelatedSo, I have been trying to rid my Toshiba Satellite of a ton of bloatware they put on a new laptop running Windows 8. There are also some unnecessary Windows 8 tiles I can't get rid of from the big blue Metro start up screen.
Some, the ones that I guess are "apps" I can right click on, select "unpin" and they're gone, but others I cannot get rid of
Here's how my problem presents:
I select ALL APPS by right clicking on the blue Metro start screen.
Then I right click something like a game "It Girl" or "Polar Bowler" and I see PIN TO START, which I don't want to do, UNINSTALL, which I DO want to do, RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR, or OPEN FILE LOCATION. Uninstall just takes me to the control panel's "add/remove programs." Well there are no games there. I uninstalled them from there already. The other options just take me to the desktop
I'd love to be able to delete these tiles (some games, but also a number of Toshiba programs I'm never going to use.) But I've been unable to find the key.
So basically, I was just messing around in file explorer trying to view hidden files and I done something, now most the start menu tiles are gone. I have tried a system restore with no succes. The files are not in the start folder either. I checked.
View 4 Replies View RelatedSo I woke my desktop from sleep, and there was no Start Screen! The Desktop wallpaper was showing, but no tiles, no anything. Desktop is fine, just no Start Screen. No tiles. No categories, no nothing. ???
View 5 Replies View RelatedThis morning I found that my Start Screen had reverted to its factory setting. All the tiles I had deleted (Ebay, Netflix, Music, Games, and so on) were back again, and all the tiles I had added were gone -- about 60 tiles that were links to my folders and to certain programs, etc. Almost all of the links were to desktop apps or folders. I could pin them all back again, but I don't have a list of them. My desktop and my data are OK, but I need those tiles back. I've been on the phone with Microsoft, and they did a system restore from 12/26, but it didn't restore the tiles even though they were there yesterday. If I could just find a list of their names, it would be enough.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI started using Windows 8 for the first time today and actually like it quite a bit. I think with some tweaks, I will like it more than Windows 7 and previous versions of the OS. However, I have spent approximately an hour trying to figure out one thing.
I would like to have two tiles in two different groups for the same program. Let me provide an example for ease of understanding.
On the Start screen, I have one group titled Browsers. In it, I have tiles for multiple browsers, including Firefox. In another group, I have Work, where I have productivity applications. I would like to have the Firefox tile appear in both the Browsers group and the Work group.
I wonder if there is a way to prevent tiles from dragging on the start screen? Hard to believe MS left this out! I often drag or swipe across the start screen and move a tile wo/ intending to. This happens often on the touch screen of my Samsung slate. Not sure if it happens as easily with a mouse.
View 2 Replies View RelatedFrom the start screen I can only open desktop and Microsoft software. When I click on other app tiles the screen shows the app logo as if it is opening but it doesn't open and goes back to the start screen.

View 5 Replies View RelatedFrom Winbeta: Simply copy the following code into a new txt file and rename it to whatever you like, just add the .vbs to the file extension. For example: shutdown.vbs. Once this is done, simply double click the script and it will create the tiles for you. If you are unable to create a .vbs document, make sure you have "show file names extensions" enabled in Folder Options within Windows 8.
set WshShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
strStartMenu = WshShell.SpecialFolders("StartMenu")

The Tiles on my Windows 8 Start Screen are suddenly showing annoying thick border when I move the cursor over them, so is the user name in the top right corner. How can I stop this?
View 3 Replies View RelatedSeen this on the start screen my live tiles on the top row and the bottom row gets cut off
Take a look here : [URL] ....
I can resolve it by resizing a tile but it cuts off again when i move a tile. Its obviously a bug if you take a look at both screenshots side by side.
I can't seem to find where you can increase the size of the fonts used within the tiles on the start menu in 8.1. Is it possible to do, and if so, where would I do it at?
View 9 Replies View RelatedIs there an app or a way to move/create shortcut tiles on Start screen for Wireless section for Modern UI settings. I just bought TF810 (YUPI!!!) and would love to have quick access to those parts of the system (sort of as in WP 7.x/8).
Battery level shown on tile/start screen (it is only shown in detail on task bar) would also be useful. I keep searching for it but no luck so far ....
How can I rearrange the tiles on the mega-tile Apps screen?
View 3 Replies View RelatedShort and simple, I have windows 8.1 and I've gotten two blue screens in the past two days. Both of them happened as I just clicked in a youtube video and the video was just beginning to buffer and start. Of watching probably 15 videos, 2 of the 15 put me to blue screen. This happened right after I connected my TV as a dual monitor. This hasn't happened in the 8.5 months I've had the computer, but the day I connect a secondary monitor (or tv in this case), i get a blue screen error code 0xa00001. What could be causing this?
View 14 Replies View RelatedFor sometime now, can't say exactly when it started, all Flash videos have a strange startup delay. Videos buffer fast, no complaints, audio starts immediately but the video hangs there up to 7 - 8 seconds showing the first frame and then after this delay, jumps forward to catch the audio and finally plays normally.
I have difficulties to describe this, lets try with other words: I start for example a YouTube video. Audio of the video starts immediately, totally normally, but for the first 7 or 8 seconds the video only shows a still image of the first frame, totally frozen, then jumps to same time spot where audio currently is going and from that point I can watch videos normally. I lose nothing of the audio but visually I am not able to see those first seconds of the video.
When finally both audio and video streams are normal and running, if I switch to / from full screen, the same happens again although the video is frozen only 2 to 4 seconds (audio runs normally), delay being not as long as when video is started.
I have latest Flash installed, the laptop in question is the one told in my system specs. The issue is only when streaming Flash videos; disabling Flash for instance in IE11 and using HTML5 player instead, all videos (even YouTube) work as they should, both audio and video starting immediately.
I've tried just about everything, but can't seem to find a setting to stop this action. The screen on my laptop (Sony Flip 15A, intel4400/geforce735) seems to increase and decrease in brightness between screens. It's rather annoying not just because of the change, but also because it takes several seconds to occur and it occurs in discrete steps. I'm running the latest drivers from both intel and nvidia. I've tried turning off adaptive brightness and disabling the sensor service, and all effects (fade in, UAC, etc) have been turned off. A video of the condition is shown below:
(Vimeo was taking forever to process)
It even happen when no programs are opening/closing - for example, if I view a dark background web page and then a lighter background, the brightness shifts. I can't imagine how awful this will be in photoshop.
About three days ago, all new style apps stopped working. I click on the tile, get a deep blue screen, and nothing else. On the left side of the screen, I can see the app as if it is working (just the name of the app, not content), so I can close the window and get back to desktop. The same applies to the STORE app. The only tiles that work, are the links to desktop applications, which open correctly on the desktop. The fault also affects all windows system apps. For example if I search on the start screen for "windows update", I can access "Windows update" as it just opens a window on the desktop, but if I click on "Windows update settings" nothing happens. The same is true with all windows system apps that open in the new start screen system.
I've uninstalled two Microsoft updates that were installed over the past three days, no change. I uninstalled AVAST, no change, so I reinstalled it! I tried restoring the system, but found that I had only one restore, and that was corrupted. Very strange. Without access to many windows system apps, the computer is really limited. The desktop seems to be working OK. I can't refresh the PC, as firstly it is a system app that runs from the start screen, and secondly because I upgraded from win 8 to 8.1 online, this can't be done anyway, as I don't have a disc. I'm really trying to avoid reinstalling windows 8!
(Pavilion dv6, i7 processor, 6GB ram, originally win7, then I upgraded to win 8 and now 8.1. I've been running 8.1 for some months without problems, just occasionally on start-up from sleep, I get "error in non-cached memory" BSOD, and the system restarts.)
Can I have icons on the Start screen that do not show up on the Apps screen ?
View 1 Replies View Relatedwhy Microsoft pushed these Store Apps out and then screwed them up? I have some installed which work fine, but when trying to install others - they won't open. are being offered by Microsoft but there seems to be no solid explanation. This along with the real mess up on Update 1 for many users make me wonder who is in control of Windows.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I was on Windows 8 I could install an app from the store and it would automatically put a tile for it on the start screen. After upgrading to 8.1 it stopped doing that. Now after I install an app I have to search for it and right click and tell it to pin to the start. Is there any way to have a tile automatically put on the start screen after install with 8.1?
View 3 Replies View RelatedIt's been at-least 5 months sense I've got my computer, never once have i used the app store! Every app that connects to the internet doesn't work! I've tried waiting forever, I can't even create another profile all i have is administrator.
View 9 Replies View RelatedAs I understand it, when I it the Windows key or mouse-click lower left while in the desktop, it is supposed to take me to the Start Screen. Indeed, it did work this way for some time. However, now, when I do either, it takes me to the Apps Screen and I have to do something (one of several) to switch to the Start Screen. Once there, if I hit Windows key or click lower left repeatedly, it goes Start Screen -> Apps Screen -> Desktop -> Apps Screen -> Desktop, etc. I think this is wrong. It is certainly not what I want; but my searching has not run across any other mention of this behavior. I don't want it to go to the Apps Screen when I hit Windows key or click in lower left. I only want to go there if I specifically do something to get there from the Start screen. (E.g., little arrow, Ctrl-Tab) How do I get back to the Start Screen being the default choice between these two?
The behavior changed some time after I upgraded to Windows 8.1; but I am not sure if it was immediately after. I suspect not. I've only had the computer for a week, so I am still becoming accustomed to Windows 8. (Coming from XP and 7 and having read a lot of negative comments, I was expecting that I would hate Windows 8. As it turns out, I don't understand the presumed problems. The functionality of Windows 7 is still there. The Start Screen is actually nicer than the Start button
After showing Administrative tools they are all listed as "NEW"; how can I get rid of that word "NEW". Launching each & every one is not really what I intend to do. Isn't there a registry key for this ?
View 9 Replies View Relatedi have recently upgraded from windows 7 to windows 8, the start screen apps/buttons are not working, they have never worked, when i click on one it just pops up for 1 second and comes back out, it refuses to load them, i have looked online and tried editing my resolution or whatever people have said to do, but none of it seems to work, what do i do?

View 1 Replies View RelatedEach time I start the computer is is necessary for me to adjust the screen resolution to cause the screen tiles to appear when clicking "start" on the right side of the screen. What am I not doing? When I open the computer the next time I adjust the screen resolution back to a different setting and the tiles come up.
Also (I'm obviously a newcomer to W. 8), I get a dialogue box each time which refers to to: "RUNDll". Something about an issue with opening something???? I click "OK" and it goes away. Appears every time I start up.
