After showing Administrative tools they are all listed as "NEW"; how can I get rid of that word "NEW". Launching each & every one is not really what I intend to do. Isn't there a registry key for this ?
View 9 RepliesI have a subscription to Office 365 Small Business Premium. The install on my Windows 7 64 Bit machine went fine a has been working great for about 3 weeks now. I was at the office yesterday and for some reason Word 2013 fails on startup. It starts up, I select the blank page option and then it fails. It calls home (to Microsoft?) and tells me they will let me know when they have a solution. This is a small business how long am I supposed to wait for their solution? I need a solution now for Word 2013 now.
Everything else still works, Outlook 2013, Excel 2103. etc. I am thinking of removing this machine from the subscription and uninstalling Office 2013 and then downloading and installing it again.
Any easier way to get this Word 2013 functioning again
I've tried just about everything, but can't seem to find a setting to stop this action. The screen on my laptop (Sony Flip 15A, intel4400/geforce735) seems to increase and decrease in brightness between screens. It's rather annoying not just because of the change, but also because it takes several seconds to occur and it occurs in discrete steps. I'm running the latest drivers from both intel and nvidia. I've tried turning off adaptive brightness and disabling the sensor service, and all effects (fade in, UAC, etc) have been turned off. A video of the condition is shown below:

It even happen when no programs are opening/closing - for example, if I view a dark background web page and then a lighter background, the brightness shifts. I can't imagine how awful this will be in photoshop.
About three days ago, all new style apps stopped working. I click on the tile, get a deep blue screen, and nothing else. On the left side of the screen, I can see the app as if it is working (just the name of the app, not content), so I can close the window and get back to desktop. The same applies to the STORE app. The only tiles that work, are the links to desktop applications, which open correctly on the desktop. The fault also affects all windows system apps. For example if I search on the start screen for "windows update", I can access "Windows update" as it just opens a window on the desktop, but if I click on "Windows update settings" nothing happens. The same is true with all windows system apps that open in the new start screen system.
I've uninstalled two Microsoft updates that were installed over the past three days, no change. I uninstalled AVAST, no change, so I reinstalled it! I tried restoring the system, but found that I had only one restore, and that was corrupted. Very strange. Without access to many windows system apps, the computer is really limited. The desktop seems to be working OK. I can't refresh the PC, as firstly it is a system app that runs from the start screen, and secondly because I upgraded from win 8 to 8.1 online, this can't be done anyway, as I don't have a disc. I'm really trying to avoid reinstalling windows 8!
(Pavilion dv6, i7 processor, 6GB ram, originally win7, then I upgraded to win 8 and now 8.1. I've been running 8.1 for some months without problems, just occasionally on start-up from sleep, I get "error in non-cached memory" BSOD, and the system restarts.)
Can I have icons on the Start screen that do not show up on the Apps screen ?

After upgrading to 8.1 it stopped doing that. Now after I install an app I have to search for it and right click and tell it to pin to the start. View 9 Replies View RelatedAs I understand it, when I it the Windows key or mouse-click lower left while in the desktop, it is supposed to take me to the Start Screen. Indeed, it did work this way for some time. However, now, when I do either, it takes me to the Apps Screen and I have to do something (one of several) to switch to the Start Screen. Once there, if I hit Windows key or click lower left repeatedly, it goes Start Screen -> Apps Screen -> Desktop -> Apps Screen -> Desktop, etc. I think this is wrong. It is certainly not what I want; but my searching has not run across any other mention of this behavior. I don't want it to go to the Apps Screen when I hit Windows key or click in lower left. I only want to go there if I specifically do something to get there from the Start screen. (E.g., little arrow, Ctrl-Tab) How do I get back to the Start Screen being the default choice between these two?
The behavior changed some time after I upgraded to Windows 8.1; but I am not sure if it was immediately after. I suspect not. I've only had the computer for a week, so I am still becoming accustomed to Windows 8. (Coming from XP and 7 and having read a lot of negative comments, I was expecting that I would hate Windows 8. As it turns out, I don't understand the presumed problems. The functionality of Windows 7 is still there. The Start Screen is actually nicer than the Start button
i have recently upgraded from windows 7 to windows 8, the start screen apps/buttons are not working, they have never worked, when i click on one it just pops up for 1 second and comes back out, it refuses to load them, i have looked online and tried editing my resolution or whatever people have said to do, but none of it seems to work, what do i do?

This way I can't rearrange any apps, can't add any of them to start screen to, nothing.. I can only open them. For example my Microsoft Excel file shortcut will be like follows:
Target: "C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficeOffice15EXCEL.EXE" "D:UsersUser NameYour File Name.xlsx"
Start in: "C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficeOffice15"
I usually set the Start In to the MS Office Folder or the File location folder, it doesn't seem to affect it either way. I created a folder in my username called Shortcuts and put all of them in there. Because Windows sees this as an executable program it will allow you to right click it and to pin it to the Start Menu even though it actually starts the saved file you need. I use this for my Access database files too. As long as you set the correct path to the file name, it works every time. You can name the shortcut whatever name you need as well.
Anyway, I thought I'd share it since it makes a great time saver being able to launch your most frequently used files straight from the Start Menu in Windows 8 rather than having to launch the program and then trying to open the saved file.
When I try and watch videos that are under tiles in start screen, I get audeo but no video. If I open the video from browser, Chrome, it plays OK. How do I fix?

After upgrading (in-place) to 8.1 Pro, all of the traditional applications and their shortcuts in the traditional program menu were still there, but the Tiles on the Metro start screen were gone.

Some, the ones that I guess are "apps" I can right click on, select "unpin" and they're gone, but others I cannot get rid of
Here's how my problem presents:
I select ALL APPS by right clicking on the blue Metro start screen.
Then I right click something like a game "It Girl" or "Polar Bowler" and I see PIN TO START, which I don't want to do, UNINSTALL, which I DO want to do, RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR, or OPEN FILE LOCATION. Uninstall just takes me to the control panel's "add/remove programs." Well there are no games there. I uninstalled them from there already. The other options just take me to the desktop
I'd love to be able to delete these tiles (some games, but also a number of Toshiba programs I'm never going to use.) But I've been unable to find the key.

Yesterday, I had to purchase a new desktop PC monitor. It's a Samsung S22C300H .
The resolution is higher than my previous monitor. As a result, when I open Microsoft Word and have it display in Print Layout mode, the page has shifted from the center of the screen to the far left.
(The resolution on the new monitor is 1920 x 1080.)
I've been used to the page being in the center of the screen for the past 20 years! I've lowered the resolution, which did center the page in Word, but the resolution is nowhere near as sharp as the high resolution mode.
Is there a way to get the Print Layout page in Word to be centered on the screen in this high resolution? If so, what is the procedure?
I have a need for inspecting a huge batch of files created by Word 97. They mostly consist of a complex mixture of figures that (I've been told) on the original Word 97 were all ordered into columns (but no *tables* format was used). On my Windows 8.1, I have Kingsoft Writer installed and this shows me just a jumble of words and figures whose meaning I can't easily guess. It can't obviously read the exact format of Word 97.
I know I can find a Word 97 Viewer somewhere on the Microsoft site - but nowhere I'm seeing anything mentioned as compatible with Windows 8 and I'm reluctant to install something that might compromise my great new computer. Would it be o.k. to install on Windows 8 a Word Viewer created for previous operating systems?
