I have a weird problem on my windows 8.1 start screen. When I right mouse click on app nothing happens. This way I can't rearrange any apps, can't add any of them to start screen to, nothing.. I can only open them. There is no menu after right clicking on any icon, there is no menu after clicking empty space surrounding icons.

why Microsoft pushed these Store Apps out and then screwed them up? I have some installed which work fine, but when trying to install others - they won't open. are being offered by Microsoft but there seems to be no solid explanation.This along with the real mess up on Update 1 for many users make me wonder who is in control of Windows.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've tried just about everything, but can't seem to find a setting to stop this action. The screen on my laptop (Sony Flip 15A, intel4400/geforce735) seems to increase and decrease in brightness between screens. It's rather annoying not just because of the change, but also because it takes several seconds to occur and it occurs in discrete steps. I'm running the latest drivers from both intel and nvidia. I've tried turning off adaptive brightness and disabling the sensor service, and all effects (fade in, UAC, etc) have been turned off. A video of the condition is shown below:

It even happen when no programs are opening/closing - for example, if I view a dark background web page and then a lighter background, the brightness shifts. I can't imagine how awful this will be in photoshop.
About three days ago, all new style apps stopped working. I click on the tile, get a deep blue screen, and nothing else. On the left side of the screen, I can see the app as if it is working (just the name of the app, not content), so I can close the window and get back to desktop. The same applies to the STORE app. The only tiles that work, are the links to desktop applications, which open correctly on the desktop. The fault also affects all windows system apps. For example if I search on the start screen for "windows update", I can access "Windows update" as it just opens a window on the desktop, but if I click on "Windows update settings" nothing happens. The same is true with all windows system apps that open in the new start screen system.
I've uninstalled two Microsoft updates that were installed over the past three days, no change. I uninstalled AVAST, no change, so I reinstalled it! I tried restoring the system, but found that I had only one restore, and that was corrupted. Very strange. Without access to many windows system apps, the computer is really limited. The desktop seems to be working OK. I can't refresh the PC, as firstly it is a system app that runs from the start screen, and secondly because I upgraded from win 8 to 8.1 online, this can't be done anyway, as I don't have a disc. I'm really trying to avoid reinstalling windows 8!
(Pavilion dv6, i7 processor, 6GB ram, originally win7, then I upgraded to win 8 and now 8.1. I've been running 8.1 for some months without problems, just occasionally on start-up from sleep, I get "error in non-cached memory" BSOD, and the system restarts.)
Can I have icons on the Start screen that do not show up on the Apps screen ?

After upgrading to 8.1 it stopped doing that. Now after I install an app I have to search for it and right click and tell it to pin to the start. As I understand it, when I it the Windows key or mouse-click lower left while in the desktop, it is supposed to take me to the Start Screen. Indeed, it did work this way for some time. However, now, when I do either, it takes me to the Apps Screen and I have to do something (one of several) to switch to the Start Screen. Once there, if I hit Windows key or click lower left repeatedly, it goes Start Screen -> Apps Screen -> Desktop -> Apps Screen -> Desktop, etc. I think this is wrong. It is certainly not what I want; but my searching has not run across any other mention of this behavior. I don't want it to go to the Apps Screen when I hit Windows key or click in lower left. I only want to go there if I specifically do something to get there from the Start screen. (E.g., little arrow, Ctrl-Tab) How do I get back to the Start Screen being the default choice between these two?
The behavior changed some time after I upgraded to Windows 8.1; but I am not sure if it was immediately after. I suspect not. I've only had the computer for a week, so I am still becoming accustomed to Windows 8. (Coming from XP and 7 and having read a lot of negative comments, I was expecting that I would hate Windows 8. As it turns out, I don't understand the presumed problems. The functionality of Windows 7 is still there. The Start Screen is actually nicer than the Start button
After showing Administrative tools they are all listed as "NEW"; how can I get rid of that word "NEW". Launching each & every one is not really what I intend to do. Isn't there a registry key for this ?

I can search for it, then right-click on it, and click on "Pin to Start" and it creates a tile on my Start screen, but I want it to create a new tile by default when I install an app, and it has stopped doing that!!!!
So, I have been trying to rid my Toshiba Satellite of a ton of bloatware they put on a new laptop running Windows 8. There are also some unnecessary Windows 8 tiles I can't get rid of from the big blue Metro start up screen.
Some, the ones that I guess are "apps" I can right click on, select "unpin" and they're gone, but others I cannot get rid of
Here's how my problem presents:
I select ALL APPS by right clicking on the blue Metro start screen.
Then I right click something like a game "It Girl" or "Polar Bowler" and I see PIN TO START, which I don't want to do, UNINSTALL, which I DO want to do, RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR, or OPEN FILE LOCATION. Uninstall just takes me to the control panel's "add/remove programs." Well there are no games there. I uninstalled them from there already. The other options just take me to the desktop
I'd love to be able to delete these tiles (some games, but also a number of Toshiba programs I'm never going to use.) But I've been unable to find the key.
Is this possible? I have 3 open Chrome windows that are minimized in the taskbar. I would like them to remain in the order that I originally opened them, but sometimes Windows 8 decides to switch their order. It's extremely frustrating and totally breaks up the flow of my work. Can I rearrange them back?

The problem is, the installed programs don't appear on the start screen, like what windows 8.0 did. They showed on the app screen. My windows is MSDN 8.1 Pro.
How to set all installed programs to appear on start screen?
I have downloaded, and, I think, disabled autoarrange. I am now able to rearrange the photos in a standard desktop file. However, it does not carry over to my photo gallery. There is probably a step I have failed to complete, but I can't find it.

I am unable to do this as the photos are being arranged in date & time order....and I cannot seem to change this. I posted this thread but no one replied then back yesterday I ran it into Safe Mode and used the CMD and put these "sfc/scannow" then the PC booted into Safe Mode.
But in my Start Menu many apps won't open accept Facebook, Twitter, Photos and the Store opens, and when I goto install apps it shows "This app wasn't installed"

In Windows 8.1 do the on screen notifications only show on the Start screen?
I'm talking about the big ones I see with the black bar, such as low battery warning.
Twice I've been on the desktop and I never got a low battery warning. To test I made sure I was on the Start screen and sure enough the warning popped up. Also, when I switched over to the desktop the battery icon showed the exclamation point where I don't think it ever did when always on the desktop.
I have a Windows 8.1 and a problem with my apps. When I try to open weather, finance and other apps, They show their start-up screen and in a couple of seconds they're gone - I am brought to my metro screen... Tried to reinstall the apps, but hadn't got any luck...
But wait, it get interesting: Even though the weather app crashes, I have a live tile option on for that app, and it shows me weather nicely.

Some few days ago there came a problem with my Laptop; and the problem was it starts consuming lot of battery when goes to idle mode. After Searching on internet i came to know that there is virus in My Laptop and there are only some programs which can remove it. Not even Avira, Microsoft Defender and any other. So i Just installed UnHackME software are cleaned my Windows 8.1. It worked Perfect and my problem seems to be resolved. But after removing that virus. New problem came in my Windows 8.1 and the Problem is :- When i Open Built-in Apps in my windows 8.1 Like App store, Skype, Mail, Finance, New, Health & Fitness, Weather, Calender, People, Food & Drink, Music, Games, Maps, Videos, News etc they just disappear after a single flash screen. The only apps which are in working condition are Camera, Sky drive and some apps which are created by installing some programs in my Windows 8.1.

What I've done so far :-
I tried to visit many communities and blogs but didn't find my problem resolved. I tried to run command sfc /scannow gave me following results after full scan Windows Resource Protection Found Corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windirLogsCBSCBS.log. For example C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log. Note that logging is currently not supported in offline servicing scenerios. (Problem Not resolved) I tried to run different commands in different blogs even to re-install App Store so that i can even uninstall all apps and re-install them all but .. (Problem Not Resolve)
Because i have huge collection of software installed in my Windows and being student i cannot afford to get the pain of re-installing the windows 8.1. And after some days I have exams and I've to study as well.
