Adjust Screen Resolution - Screen Tiles Do Not Appear Automatically

Each time I start the computer is is necessary for me to adjust the screen resolution to cause the screen tiles to appear when clicking "start" on the right side of the screen. What am I not doing? When I open the computer the next time I adjust the screen resolution back to a different setting and the tiles come up.
Also (I'm obviously a newcomer to W. 8), I get a dialogue box each time which refers to to: "RUNDll". Something about an issue with opening something???? I click "OK" and it goes away. Appears every time I start up.
So, a few days ago the battery of my laptop died and when I charged it and power it up again I found that I can't change the brightness of my screen which I was able to few minutes before. I tried fixing it by going onto control panel>hardware and sound>power option, but it didn't work. It's just stuck. What can I do? Is my laptop broken?
I have a new computer , HP recline 23 . OS is Windows 8.1 . It came out of the box with Windows 8 , so I had MS store update to 8.1. The screen is set very bright , OK for day use but too bright for night use .
My problem is that I can't adjust the screen brightness. After clicking on the charms menu and clicking on settings , the brightness icon is greyed out . It says windows cannot adjust brightness on this computer. I tried the various locations where the brightness slider may be but all the relevant screens show no brightness slider.
I don't know whether win 8 had the brightness control before upgrading to 8.1 ( I mention this because several people complain that after upgrading to 8.1 , they loss brightness control amd regained it by rolling back the driver )
I tried the update driver option but it says my driver is already updated. The roll back option is greyed out ...
BTW the display adapter shows two adapters : Intel 4600 and Gforce GT730 . How do I check which one is being used?
Well I've had my laptop for almost 5 months now, however I did break it and got a screen replacement yesterday. Ever since then my screen seems dim. I've altered all the settings (as explained on other threads) but I still can't get to the centre of the problem. I had no trouble altering my brightness before my screen replacement so I do presume that the screen that the shop fitted wasn't the correct one and therefore a cheap option.
I went and bought a new laptop since my old one was starting to die on me and stuff. It's a Samsung ATIV Book 4, and it's really nice. This is the first hick up I've had with it so far, and I noticed it happening today. I noticed my screen was really dim today as I was using it, so naturally, I use the Fn key to turn it up, but nothing happens. Up in the top left of the screen, it shows a little brightness meter going up and down as I turn it up and down, but nothing changes. I went to the power options menu and tried to adjust it there, and alas, nothing happened. I even tried disabling the display driver and restarting it, but that didn't do anything.
I just reset my PC. I was installing things back onto it (firefox, Spotify etc) and all of the sudden the screen went dim. I went to settings and it says "Windows can't adjust the brightness on this display" . Restarting the computer does nothing.
I have a Windows 8.1 Toshiba Satellite L875D-S7332, with a AMD A6-4400M APU processor with integrated graphics. My display adapter, according to device manager, is a AMD Radeon HD 7520G.
Now, my problem is that I'm unable to adjust the screen brightness of my laptop. I haven't made any recent changes, and I noticed this about a week or so ago(I don't typically change my laptop brightness, so this could have been happening for longer). In the mean time, I've tried rolling back my display drivers, with no success, and also updating to the latest driver set, which has also not worked?
the screen on my lenovo ideapad Z500 touch has dimmed and i can't adjust it back. i've tried the all the brightness settings i can find adn even updated the drivers but this hasn't worked,
Just got a new Toshiba laptop and plugged it into my Emerson 32" tv/monitor and the top, sides and bottom expand beyond the scope of the screen. I have Windows 8 and have adjusted the screen resolution from the highest to the lowest but it does not make a difference.
I have a gateway NE56R41u. With that aside, today i played the sims 3 when it has a warning about my graphics card or whatever, so i went to my screen resolution to see if i can fix the problem. Unfortunately, the place where i can choose what my resolution is greyed out, so i cannot change a thing. Heres a picture .....
I have a msi u270 with an amd e-450 but the res is only 1024*600. I saw about the changing of the value for an index file called "Display1_DownScalingSupported" but i cannot seem to find it. I tried installing drivers and then tried but could not find it then i tried again with the latest beta drivers from the amd website but i cannot find that.
I just installed Windows 8, and each time I boot up my resolution reverts to 800x600 even though my native is 1680x1050. I have to constantly change it after login. I hope this is a simple fix, this is the first time I'm using Windows 8 as my normal OS.
i have lenovo z580 laptop with windows8. Initially when i purchased it, i remember that it had resolution of 1920*1080 working. But since a week i notice that the screen resolution has down graded to 1366*768 and am unable to set it back to 1920*1080, as the screen resolution slider does not show up that option at all.
On smartphones when you place the cursor inside a text box the keyboard pops up automatically but on my Lenovo Yoga in tablet mode this is not the case. I have to tap the tiny little keyboard icon on the bottom taskbar for it to come up.
Is this normal for Win 8.1 machines? It seems a bit weird and certainly counterintuitive.
My netbook(Samsung NC110 with 1024*600 Screen Resolution and Intel GMA 3150) is running Windows 8.1 x64 now. I want to use all features of Windows 8, so i want to set Custom resoltion like 1366*768. I was trying to change some keys in the regedit, but the picture was very bad, cause my screen is 16:9, and 1024*768 or 1152*864 resolutions is 4:3. I want to get some utility to set Custom Resolutions, that bigger that real resolution of my display.
I'm using win 8.1 with a 2560 x1440 resolution, but I can't seem to get split screen to work. I've tried a few tutorials online, but without success.
I can easily split the screen by left mouse clicking the top of the screen and dragging down. The first window works normally with task bar showing on the bottom, but I can't figure out how to get anything else in the 2nd window that is created. One online tutorial mentioned something about executing a mouse-over on the left or upper left corner, but that doesn't bring anything up. I can get the search/share/start/devices/settings task bar to appear by mouse-overing the upper right hand corner, but this doesn't lead to filling the second window.
I am also having an issue with not being able to change the screen resolution. I tried updating drivers. Resolution is set to 1024 x 768. There are no other choices.

There are a certain number of maximum rows you can add based on your screen resolution.
My screen has a 1366x768 (Not mentioned there). Based on that, I can only have 4 rows. But, what could happen if forced a fifth row with that registry hack?
My new Acer laptop has very disappointing screen and video quality. The screen resolution is maxed-out at 1366 x 768 with Intel HD Graphics 4000. Those specs should be just fine for great visuals. My old desktop didn't come close to that but I could watch Youtube videos very well with no pixeling of image. Acer tech support said "new graphics driver download" and I did that , to no avail. Setting adjustments etc.? My wife's 3 year old Acer has better screen quality than my new one.
I'm running Vista 64 and tried to upgrade to win 8. It went well enough, but my screen resolution became very poor. I have AMD Radeon X1250 graphics and can't find a driver that will work on Win 8, so I reverted to Vista. But I really want to run Win 8.
The other day my son stepped on my laptop and messed up the screen. Now when it starts up I get red lines going across the screen, but can still see the bios info and the windows logo and spinning dots when Windows loads just fine, however when Windows starts I just have a blank screen. Obviously the screen was damaged, but it seems to display the lower resolution okay. I just can't lower the resolution in Windows since I can't see what I'm doing. Plugging in an external monitor doesn't work, there's no output there. Is there way to change the resolution settings if I take it the hdd and plug it into another computer as an external drive? The laptop is an Intel cpu and my other machine is an AMD cpu, so I don't think just trying to boot the laptop hard drive in the desktop would work.
So I have Acer Aspire E1-570G that has 1366x768 max resolution, but is there any way to put it's resolution to 1920x1080? After using my friend's laptop (Acer Aspire V) that has 1920x1080 resolution.
So basically, I was just messing around in file explorer trying to view hidden files and I done something, now most the start menu tiles are gone. I have tried a system restore with no succes. The files are not in the start folder either. I checked.
So I woke my desktop from sleep, and there was no Start Screen! The Desktop wallpaper was showing, but no tiles, no anything. Desktop is fine, just no Start Screen. No tiles. No categories, no nothing. ???
This morning I found that my Start Screen had reverted to its factory setting. All the tiles I had deleted (Ebay, Netflix, Music, Games, and so on) were back again, and all the tiles I had added were gone -- about 60 tiles that were links to my folders and to certain programs, etc. Almost all of the links were to desktop apps or folders. I could pin them all back again, but I don't have a list of them. My desktop and my data are OK, but I need those tiles back. I've been on the phone with Microsoft, and they did a system restore from 12/26, but it didn't restore the tiles even though they were there yesterday. If I could just find a list of their names, it would be enough.
I started using Windows 8 for the first time today and actually like it quite a bit. I think with some tweaks, I will like it more than Windows 7 and previous versions of the OS. However, I have spent approximately an hour trying to figure out one thing.
I would like to have two tiles in two different groups for the same program. Let me provide an example for ease of understanding.
On the Start screen, I have one group titled Browsers. In it, I have tiles for multiple browsers, including Firefox. In another group, I have Work, where I have productivity applications. I would like to have the Firefox tile appear in both the Browsers group and the Work group.
