I installed a copy of Windows 8 Professional. The "Live Tiles" on my new Start screen aren't working. I can click on the Store icon and it comes up, then immediately closes. I've turned off live updating and turned on app locations and all that. It still won't come on.
I've tried it with all my new apps, and none of them work, except for the Maps app.
Seen this on the start screen my live tiles on the top row and the bottom row gets cut off

I can resolve it by resizing a tile but it cuts off again when i move a tile. Its obviously a bug if you take a look at both screenshots side by side.
I want to ask about start screen, here the screenshot.
The icons changes like box show in the screenshot. The last thing I remember before it's happen is, I installed all the font that I copied from other computer using windows 7.
I am getting quite used to the start screen on Windows 8 (as opposed to a start menu (?) - this change in nomenclature is sure to confuse users...)
I followed the tip on organizing into groups - quite useful.
However, once I have my start screen organized the way I like, I find that within groups icons tend to 'shift' positions randomly - which is irritating.
Any way to 'lock' them so once they are in position - one would think MS would have thought of that already.
Noticed something interesting - I am on a dual monitor set-up and when I open the start screen on a different monitor the organization of the start screen changes. Maybe that is why it is not an option (?) ...
I have a problem I can not see more in the icon bar of the start screen of my windows 8.1 tried to explain to a previous restore point but without result ..... I do not want to reformat everything ...

I end up with all these categories that have 2 or 3 icons off to the side when one new column would do it in a much more compact format. Some categories could be only one column but it still insists on using 2.
Am I missing something some place in the settings or something?
I wanted to post a screenshot but none of my screen capture software seems to work in Metro.
Snipping tool, Camstudio, and Fraps all close the Metro screen as soon as I activate them.
Is there a way to align the icons in the Start Screen of Win 8.1? The customization feature won't do it and there is no apparent way to align the icons as the user may want to: (e.g. 8 icons in two neat columns).
When I try to align the icons the snap back and forth and it is very difficult, if not impossible to place them where I want.
I put my computer in sleep mode, as I have done many times. But this time, after I brought it back on, my Start Screen was missing all the tiles. AND, I can't put them back. When I click the "All Apps" button at the bottom, my screen just goes blank.
My desktop works, so I haven't lost anything. Just have a totally disfunctional Start Screen.
Symptoms:
1) After boot, I'm at the Start Screen.
2) The screen isn't blank. It's got the background and the START in the corner. It's just blank of tiles. There are no tiles on my Start screen.
3) If I go to bottom and right click, I see "All Apps" and if I click that, the screen then goes blank, and the background changes. The screen is totally blank and nothing works except the side menus. There are no tiles listed and no text on the screen.
Is there any way to disable Windows from automatically placing desktop icons on the start screen? Or is there a way to remove multiple icons at one time?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed the new Windows 8.1 Service Package 1 update earlier today. I was loving it. They finally got to addressing how bad Windows 8 was for laptops. However, the new context menu in the Start Screen simply does not appear anymore. It was earlier, and I have made no significant changes to the system in that time. When I right-click on a tile now, the only thing that happens is that it gets highlighted. No context menu to speak of. In addition, I can't get a context menu for the "Apps" section either.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have upgraded from Windows 8 to 8.1. After doing so and making sure my accounts are all setup, I have found that I can not get the mail tile to act "live". I have verified it is set to live by right-clicking and seeing that link state "turn live tile off". I tried doing that and then turning it back on. I have tried rebooting. But the tile just isn't live. My other live tiles (news, finance, weather, store, etc) all seem to be live. It is only mail that I am having a problem with.

It just shows the blue weather tile. When I open it, it works though, news the same. Also I tried to deinstall and reinstall the weather app, but now it doesnt even show the "use live tile" button anymore (look at picture).

I've noticed that Skydrive live tile does not work after upgrading to 8.1.
Prior to 8.1, Skydrive was live, that is it would display the contents of your folder, especially photos. Now, after 8.1, it doesn't work.
So skydrive live tile not working under 8.1?
Using 8.1 my weather live tile does not work if I have the option set to Fahrenheit. Once I set it to Celsius the live tile works just fine.

Ok, maybe I'm missing something but accessing the pictures (live pictures tile) folder from the start menu shows my photo's but not in the order I'd like them to be in. As such, to my horror I've found I can't move them around (re-arrange them).
I can obviously re-arrange them if I access the "My Pictures" folder through explorer, in fact they're actually arranged differently than what is displayed accessing it through the Windows Start Screen.
Anyway is it possible to arrange them there because trying to manually move them around proves fruitless.
Also, how do you take a snip of the stat screen using the snip tool? Win 8 can be annoying at times.
About three days ago, all new style apps stopped working. I click on the tile, get a deep blue screen, and nothing else. On the left side of the screen, I can see the app as if it is working (just the name of the app, not content), so I can close the window and get back to desktop. The same applies to the STORE app. The only tiles that work, are the links to desktop applications, which open correctly on the desktop. The fault also affects all windows system apps. For example if I search on the start screen for "windows update", I can access "Windows update" as it just opens a window on the desktop, but if I click on "Windows update settings" nothing happens. The same is true with all windows system apps that open in the new start screen system.
I've uninstalled two Microsoft updates that were installed over the past three days, no change. I uninstalled AVAST, no change, so I reinstalled it! I tried restoring the system, but found that I had only one restore, and that was corrupted. Very strange. Without access to many windows system apps, the computer is really limited. The desktop seems to be working OK. I can't refresh the PC, as firstly it is a system app that runs from the start screen, and secondly because I upgraded from win 8 to 8.1 online, this can't be done anyway, as I don't have a disc. I'm really trying to avoid reinstalling windows 8!
(Pavilion dv6, i7 processor, 6GB ram, originally win7, then I upgraded to win 8 and now 8.1. I've been running 8.1 for some months without problems, just occasionally on start-up from sleep, I get "error in non-cached memory" BSOD, and the system restarts.)
Trying Windows 8 at work and bought new Samsung 700t tablet. Windows 8 works fine with local user (linked to live id) and all our software including Symantec Endpoint 12.1.2. As soon as I join to domain (server 2008) and reboot the live tiles no longer function. Have total reset several times and tried refresh and restore points. My guess is that has to be default behavior of Win 8 GPO compared to 2008 domain GPO. We are very plain on our policies and so far have not found anything on local computer or GPO that can correct issues.

I'm having the same problem, where I deleted the file by accident and now there is no live tile for the desktop anywhere on the start screen, not even in the All Apps category. I can't find it in the Windows Store either. What do I do? Here is a screenshot of the folder that I *think* held the original desktop file.

1.- I use colored folders on my Favorites bar. Couple weeks ago the reverted back to default Windows folders. No problem.
2.- Turned pc on today and colored folders are back. Cool and still no problem.
3.- animated icons here are not animated anymore. Not just with IE 10 but slimbrowser too.
The icons on my start menu and text were about right size but today something happened and they got a lot smaller. Now the text is hard to read with a mag glass. How to make them big again?

There are a certain number of maximum rows you can add based on your screen resolution.
My screen has a 1366x768 (Not mentioned there). Based on that, I can only have 4 rows. But, what could happen if forced a fifth row with that registry hack?
I updated windows 8.1 pro with wmc from store.I had NO problems, received no error messages, had no dc's, the power didn't shut off, the download didn't stop .. literally nothing went wrong. After update everything worked fine. All the apps are downloaded and were working fine.
But,After 2/3 months since updated, I suddenly noticed that every live tile / folder / app / game / setting etc. which were working fine, now not working.When I clicked on any tile, nothing happened. It just went to a blank green screen because my background color is green. It appears on the left upper corner as opened but doesn't run. When I click, I am send back to Start Screen or Desktop. Even Store and Windows Setting stopped working. So, naturally i started checking the web for answers, but couldn't find a solution to the exact problem i was having. I saw countless posts of people saying "Just uninstall / re-install the apps" but at first, I couldn't get my App store app to run. Again, it was just blank after several minutes of waiting. I was able to download it after using the search bar menu on the right side of my computer, and was able to start installing some apps.
So i thought that everything was going to be ok, but then I ran into another problem where some of the apps wouldn't install, and I received an error message with the code/number of 0x80070002.
So, at this point, only a few of my apps are working due to the simple fact that I was able to re-install them, but the others I can't re-install because of this error message.
FIRST SOLUTION:I found a thread online that someone had created with a simple fix to about 2-3 errors on the tiles. This is a simple powershell script to re-register some apps so that they can run again. This worked to fix my app store app and setting, but only that apps. The app update is still not working.
I have another windows live ID, and when I log in with that Id, all my apps works normally! I am out of sorts now.
As the title states, instead of the check marks and icons, the start menu is now displaying these [].

I just got a new laptop with Windows 8 and upgraded to Windows 8.1.
I don't like seeing my desktop icons, so I did right click on desktop -> View -> Show desktop icons so that they disappear. They're gone, but every time I restart my laptop, they appear again.
I'd like to solve the problem correctly without just deleting all of my desktop icons.
I upgraded to Windows 8,double clicked the windows.old folder to get files from old computer, now there are ICONS all over the screen and I can't delete some of them or programs won't work.
View 8 Replies View RelatedMy problem is simply this, when i boot my pc into windows the boot takes maybe 3 seconds to desktop, but the icons on the desktop do not appear for another 10 seconds. The same can be said for the icons in the start menu. The biggest problem is that even if i run the icon such as firefox, before the icon has fully loaded, the program will not run. No programs will run until 13 seconds after boot once the icons have loaded.
