The icons changes like box show in the screenshot. The last thing I remember before it's happen is, I installed all the font that I copied from other computer using windows 7.
I am getting quite used to the start screen on Windows 8 (as opposed to a start menu (?) - this change in nomenclature is sure to confuse users...)
I followed the tip on organizing into groups - quite useful.
However, once I have my start screen organized the way I like, I find that within groups icons tend to 'shift' positions randomly - which is irritating.
Any way to 'lock' them so once they are in position - one would think MS would have thought of that already.
Noticed something interesting - I am on a dual monitor set-up and when I open the start screen on a different monitor the organization of the start screen changes. Maybe that is why it is not an option (?) ...
Can I have icons on the Start screen that do not show up on the Apps screen ?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed a copy of Windows 8 Professional. The "Live Tiles" on my new Start screen aren't working. I can click on the Store icon and it comes up, then immediately closes. I've turned off live updating and turned on app locations and all that. It still won't come on.
I've tried it with all my new apps, and none of them work, except for the Maps app.
So basically, I was just messing around in file explorer trying to view hidden files and I done something, now most the start menu tiles are gone. I have tried a system restore with no succes. The files are not in the start folder either. I checked.
View 4 Replies View RelatedWindows 8 start screen adds 2 new columns when I add 2 items to a block of programs.
I end up with all these categories that have 2 or 3 icons off to the side when one new column would do it in a much more compact format. Some categories could be only one column but it still insists on using 2.
Am I missing something some place in the settings or something?
I wanted to post a screenshot but none of my screen capture software seems to work in Metro.
Snipping tool, Camstudio, and Fraps all close the Metro screen as soon as I activate them.
Is there a way to align the icons in the Start Screen of Win 8.1? The customization feature won't do it and there is no apparent way to align the icons as the user may want to: (e.g. 8 icons in two neat columns).
When I try to align the icons the snap back and forth and it is very difficult, if not impossible to place them where I want.
I went into This Computer and went to my C: drive to attempt to clean things up and make my system run faster by compressing files to save space. Unfortunately, I clicked some of the wrong stuff and hid data that I'm pretty sure the computer thinks is important, and now my Metro tiles are missing.
View 3 Replies View Related I put my computer in sleep mode, as I have done many times. But this time, after I brought it back on, my Start Screen was missing all the tiles. AND, I can't put them back. When I click the "All Apps" button at the bottom, my screen just goes blank.
My desktop works, so I haven't lost anything. Just have a totally disfunctional Start Screen.
Symptoms:
1) After boot, I'm at the Start Screen.
2) The screen isn't blank. It's got the background and the START in the corner. It's just blank of tiles. There are no tiles on my Start screen.
3) If I go to bottom and right click, I see "All Apps" and if I click that, the screen then goes blank, and the background changes. The screen is totally blank and nothing works except the side menus. There are no tiles listed and no text on the screen.
My brother in law has somehow deleted the Desktop tile on the start screen. How can I restore it?

View 3 Replies View RelatedThis happened after I uninstalled all my metro apps this morning, rebooted then reinstalled them. Chrome also updated in the meantime.
They're the only icons that are broke so clearly something has happened between now and then to stop icons displaying properly for new programs.
Is it worth rebuilding icon cache? Not sure the icons for metro are the same as filetype icons in Explorer though.
I installed Windows 8 with the program PWBOOT in USB disk drive and some of the apps in the metro Start Screen they didn't installed. Also the Windows store app is missing so I can't download the apps from the Windows 8 store. What should I do to bring em there? I also have a Windows 8 disc. Can I write em without deleting all the third party desktop apps? If so then how?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've got a laptop with two NTFS partitions on it; one for Win8, and another for storage of random things.
The problem is: When I open the "Computer" window, it only shows me the C: drive. Other things are there... the DVD-RW, network folders, other computers on the net, etc. But the H: drive isn't there. HOWEVER..... if I go up to the address bar and type in "H:" and hit <Enter>, it takes me to that drive, and the H: drive suddenly appears in the folder-pane on the left of the window.
It does the same thing for any USB drives I plug in. I can type their drive letters into the address bar, and then it'll take me to that drive and it'll show up in the left-hand folder pane. But then, when I navigate away from that drive, it disappears again.
It's like Windows is hiding them from me unless I know the address, kinda like how putting "$" at the end of a shared folder name does it with network shares.
I just upgraded to windows 8 ( i just bought the upgrade from the microsoft website).
After installing the upgrade I noticed that I was missing ALL the Metro Tiles basic ICONS ie: windows app store, internet explorer, mail , maps , messaging , music , news , people , photos , reader , travel , video ETC...
Check the attached JPGs. YOu will notice the empty tiles in the Metro UI. ALSO if i go to Default Programs you will also see that Icons are missing there as well. It's as if windows has no clue where to find the icons or windows never installed them...
I've rebooted a bunch of time. I tried doing a sfc scan ( or whatever the name is). It said it found some corrupt files and fixed them. I rebooted again but still no icons are showing up.
As much as possible, I do not want to do a fresh install or a refresh. I also have no restore points prior because well its always been like this ever since it finished installing.
Clicking the empty tiles work. It starts the application. Problem is I have no clue which tile is what.
When I was on Windows 8 I could install an app from the store and it would automatically put a tile for it on the start screen. After upgrading to 8.1 it stopped doing that. Now after I install an app I have to search for it and right click and tell it to pin to the start. Is there any way to have a tile automatically put on the start screen after install with 8.1?

View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen I click "desktop" from the Windows 8 tiles, it usually takes me to my desktop and icons. It brings me to a purple screen with only the windows logo in the lower left corner. I do not get a pop up menu when I right click on the desktop. All other users have their desktop icons. Restarted the computer didn't work. Ran MBam with no problems, AVG working, no viruses.
Changed display settings to get it to "refresh" but that didn't work. I verified it is only displaying on one monitor. I think I've tried just about everything I have found on the web, but nothing has restored my desktop icons. I basically don't have a "desktop" as I cannot right click to add new icons. It is more than just not displaying my icons.
So upon entering desktop from initial startup, all my icons are missing. The loading symbol shows if i move my cursor over the taskbar at the bottom. If I CTRl-ALT-DEL and signout i takes a minute but than i can sign in and it works fine. Im not getting any BSOD and this occurs about 1/3rd of the time. Also resetting does not solve the issue. I couldn't find anything about blank/empty desktop screens via google.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI bought a new laptop 350gb HDD with Windows 8 64bit preinstalled (no disc came with it) however I needed win7 32bit for my job since the softwares used are only compatible with old win version. I managed to back up my Windows 8 before I partitioned my HDD into 3 drives and installed win7 ultimate 32 bit on a different partition. I remember that my Windows 8 was installed in Drive C (100GB) while I have 80+GB for Shared files on Drive E and the rest of the memory are for Drive D where I installed win 7 and I labeled each drives accordingly. At first everything was working fine on both O.S, it was giving me the dual boot option at start up but I forgot if I really have tested running both O.S. before I gave my laptop to my supervisor and asked him a favor to intall the softwares for work purposes.
My supervisor then approached me and said that there might be some incompatibility issue with the updates I have on my win7 coz some applications don't install so he asked me if its ok if he reinstalls a new win7 so I said yes since Im confident that its will work fine and I have backed up my Windows 8 anyway, in short, I left everything into his hands. Later, he then got back to me and told me every job related softwares now work except that my Windows 8 now doesnt show and yes, dual boot option is not there anymore and it boots automatically to win7 like Windows 8 is not there.
I've read some forums how to check if your O.S are still there and it could just be a boot up issue and use of Easy BCD might work. I have attached images below for your reference. Now what I'm confused of is that my Windows 8 appears to be in Drive D and win7 could be in Drive C, which I'm thinking if they were exchanged when my sup reinstalled win7 or he may have overlapped my Windows 8. Im pretty sure he knows which drive is for which O.S since I labeled them. Now Im afraid to use EasyBCD on the wrong drive and I cant approach my supervisor anymore to bother him again since he worked on my laptop for almost the whole day at work.
- if both o.s. are still intact and recognized
- why the Drive letters got mixed up and how to check which drive has which o.s coz it seems like both drives has a part of my work related applications (didn't put personal files yet on win 8 when I had both o.s installed)

I accidentally deleted the EFI partition, required to boot into my Win 8.1 installation - unbeknownst to me that EFI partition was on a different disk to where my Windows is located. To complicate matters the Windows install is on a RAID0 array.
Windows repair using the original install media didn't work.
EasyRE didn't detect the RAID0 drive.I saw various instructions on how to reconstruct the EFI partition, but they all assumed that the EFI partition is still there, which in my case it isn't.how I can get my data off that drive and re-install Windows?

I just got a new laptop with Windows 8 and upgraded to Windows 8.1.
I don't like seeing my desktop icons, so I did right click on desktop -> View -> Show desktop icons so that they disappear. They're gone, but every time I restart my laptop, they appear again.
I'd like to solve the problem correctly without just deleting all of my desktop icons.
I upgraded to Windows 8,double clicked the windows.old folder to get files from old computer, now there are ICONS all over the screen and I can't delete some of them or programs won't work.

My Microsoft programs (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) are all on the desktop and I've tried to pin them to Start, but I don't see the usual "pin to start" button when I right-click. I've also tried to create shortcuts and searched through the apps to pin, but none of them worked. Is there a way I can pin them?
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy problem is simply this, when i boot my pc into windows the boot takes maybe 3 seconds to desktop, but the icons on the desktop do not appear for another 10 seconds. The same can be said for the icons in the start menu. The biggest problem is that even if i run the icon such as firefox, before the icon has fully loaded, the program will not run. No programs will run until 13 seconds after boot once the icons have loaded.

I'm not exactly sure what it's called, but it's the multitask pane on the left side of the screen that appears when you hover over the top left corner and slide down. Rather than a Windows icon it now assumes the Accent color in PC settings.
I have some modding software installed, such as UxStyle, Aero Glass for Windows 8, and a custom theme, although this issue existed without these installed.

There is usually a big rectangle that says desktop, and when you click it your desktop comes up, but we can't seem to figure out how to find it and put it back!
I have a Windows 8 tablet/ultrabook (Lenovo Yoga). I primarily use the desktop to operate and have many icons and shortcuts arranged to facilitate the use of my computer.
When I use my PC in tablet mode, sometimes I rotate the screen to read PDFs, certain webpages, etc. When I rotate the screen back to a horizontal mode, all my carefully placed icons and shortcuts are shuffled around the desktop. I realize that when I rotate the screen the icons move because they have to temporarily reorient themselves to portrait vs landscape, but shouldn't they return to their original position when I rotate the screen back to the horizontal mode?
Is there a way to lock icons in place with Windows 8?
