Missing All Windows 8 Basic Metro Icons
Oct 26, 2012
I just upgraded to windows 8 ( i just bought the upgrade from the microsoft website).
After installing the upgrade I noticed that I was missing ALL the Metro Tiles basic ICONS ie: windows app store, internet explorer, mail , maps , messaging , music , news , people , photos , reader , travel , video ETC...
Check the attached JPGs. YOu will notice the empty tiles in the Metro UI. ALSO if i go to Default Programs you will also see that Icons are missing there as well. It's as if windows has no clue where to find the icons or windows never installed them...
I've rebooted a bunch of time. I tried doing a sfc scan ( or whatever the name is). It said it found some corrupt files and fixed them. I rebooted again but still no icons are showing up.
As much as possible, I do not want to do a fresh install or a refresh. I also have no restore points prior because well its always been like this ever since it finished installing.
Clicking the empty tiles work. It starts the application. Problem is I have no clue which tile is what.

Why do the Metro style apps lack so many basic functions?
I've noticed that the Photo app, for example, doesn't allow you to do much other than view images. No share, no crop, no edit features. Nothing.
News cannot share, copy, etc.
Am I just missing these features?

This happened after I uninstalled all my metro apps this morning, rebooted then reinstalled them. Chrome also updated in the meantime.
They're the only icons that are broke so clearly something has happened between now and then to stop icons displaying properly for new programs.
Is it worth rebuilding icon cache? Not sure the icons for metro are the same as filetype icons in Explorer though.

I've got a laptop with two NTFS partitions on it; one for Win8, and another for storage of random things.
The problem is: When I open the "Computer" window, it only shows me the C: drive. Other things are there... the DVD-RW, network folders, other computers on the net, etc. But the H: drive isn't there. HOWEVER..... if I go up to the address bar and type in "H:" and hit <Enter>, it takes me to that drive, and the H: drive suddenly appears in the folder-pane on the left of the window.
It does the same thing for any USB drives I plug in. I can type their drive letters into the address bar, and then it'll take me to that drive and it'll show up in the left-hand folder pane. But then, when I navigate away from that drive, it disappears again.
It's like Windows is hiding them from me unless I know the address, kinda like how putting "$" at the end of a shared folder name does it with network shares.

I did a clean install of Windows 8 like 2 days ago and since yesterday I have noticed that when I am in "Metro" that some icons show up as just squares. For example if I right click on a tile that menu at the bottom will come up and all the icons above the actions are squares or half squares. The mute icon from the charms bar is also a square. I've put 2 pics up.

When I click "desktop" from the Windows 8 tiles, it usually takes me to my desktop and icons. It brings me to a purple screen with only the windows logo in the lower left corner. I do not get a pop up menu when I right click on the desktop. All other users have their desktop icons. Restarted the computer didn't work. Ran MBam with no problems, AVG working, no viruses.
Changed display settings to get it to "refresh" but that didn't work. I verified it is only displaying on one monitor. I think I've tried just about everything I have found on the web, but nothing has restored my desktop icons. I basically don't have a "desktop" as I cannot right click to add new icons. It is more than just not displaying my icons.

After using Windows 8 for months now, I still have trouble recognizing certain apps right away. The reason icons work so well is it takes advantage of our in-built ability to recognize patterns. One look at an icon and we subconsciously know what it's for.
But a bunch of squares and rectangles...
I pointed this out to some people when the MS released the beta of Windows 8. And I honestly thought I'd eventually get use to it. But months after, I still have to focus a little more just to know which tile to press for what.

So upon entering desktop from initial startup, all my icons are missing. The loading symbol shows if i move my cursor over the taskbar at the bottom. If I CTRl-ALT-DEL and signout i takes a minute but than i can sign in and it works fine. Im not getting any BSOD and this occurs about 1/3rd of the time. Also resetting does not solve the issue. I couldn't find anything about blank/empty desktop screens via google.

So I noticed the Start button's Windows icon is missing in my metro mode. I'm not exactly sure what it's called, but it's the multitask pane on the left side of the screen that appears when you hover over the top left corner and slide down. Rather than a Windows icon it now assumes the Accent color in PC settings.
I have some modding software installed, such as UxStyle, Aero Glass for Windows 8, and a custom theme, although this issue existed without these installed.
how to get it back. Attached are two pics, one default and one on hover.
(My keyboard has no Print Screen button and Snipping tool doesn't seem to work in Metro)

I installed Windows 8 with the program PWBOOT in USB disk drive and some of the apps in the metro Start Screen they didn't installed. Also the Windows store app is missing so I can't download the apps from the Windows 8 store. What should I do to bring em there? I also have a Windows 8 disc. Can I write em without deleting all the third party desktop apps? If so then how?

Apparently there's supposed to be a checkbox that reads "Show store apps on taskbar" but that isn't there! I have a version of Windows 8.1 that doesn't have this option. I really liked this feature. This worked for me until I installed a fresh installation of Windows 8.1.

My Disk Defragmenter that came with the system will not open. When I try to open it, a CMD windows appears for 1 second and disappears. I have tried opening it in all ways.
I have tried:
Safe Mode
Sfc /Scannow
Chkdsk
Anti Malware scans
I need something like the answer for this question, only a way to do it in Windows 8. His instructions only work on Windows 7.

How to back into basic disk from dynamic? I try Delete my partition but there is no option for back into basic...
I saw this tutorial in Change a Dynamic Disk Back to a Basic Disk but it doesn't for my windows 8 pro...
To change a dynamic disk back to a basic disk using the Windows interface. Back up all volumes on the disk you want to convert from dynamic to basic. In Disk Management, right-click each volume on the dynamic disk you want to convert to a basic disk, and then click Delete Volume for each volume on the disk. When all volumes on the disk have been deleted, right-click the disk, and then click Convert to Basic Disk.
Additional considerations:
The disk must not have any volumes nor contain any data before you can change it back to a basic disk. If you want to keep your data, back it up or move it to another volume before you convert the disk to a basic disk. Once you change a dynamic disk back to a basic disk, you can create only partitions and logical drives on that disk.
To change a dynamic disk back to a basic disk using a command line.
Back up all volumes on the disk you want to convert from dynamic to basic. Open a command prompt and type diskpart. At the DISKPART prompt, type list disk. Make note of the disk number you want to convert to basic. At the DISKPART prompt, type select disk <disknumber>. At the DISKPART prompt, type detail disk <disknumber>. For each volume on the disk, at the DISKPART prompt, type select volume= <volumenumber> and then type delete volume. At the DISKPART prompt, type select disk <disknumber>. Specify the disk number of the disk that you want to convert to a basic disk.At the DISKPART prompt, type convert basic.
I have only 1 hard drive on my laptop so i cant delete my 'partition c:'

Just bought Windows 8 from their web page and upgraded my win7.
My problem is that I'm stuck with a hopeless resolution because I can't install any display drivers.
As the headline says : Windows can only find "Microsoft basic display driver". When I try to install Nvidia drivers I get the "installation cannot continue" message.
I seriously doubt that it's hardware fault - it worked perfectly before the update to win 8.
Sometimes in the properties for the screen driver, the chiptype is listed as Nvidia, and sometimes it just says N/A...
Specs:
Intel core i3Mobile Intel HM55 Express chipsetNVIDIA GeForce GT425M Graphics
Here's what I've done - besides googleing for the past 5 hours...: Updated intel chipset Tried the guide here: How to Fix NVIDIA Driver Update Installer Error - YouTube ---- this got me a little further but as soon as it tries to access my tv the installation dies (the time of a gfx installation where the screen flickers) Removed the windows driver. Uninstalled old nvidia drivers.

I bought internal seagate barracuda 3tb, and since I installed it inside my PC, I went to disk management and saw this
Then I made it in one partition and converted it from dynamic and MBR to basic and GPT, then I stored files in it, the problem is, after I installed windows 8 over windows 7 -which is in a separate drive not the seagate. I faced the same problem in the image above, windows couldn't dedicate the hard drive because it's dynamic and MBR. It has my files now. I want to convert it to basic and GPT without losing data because they're very important.

In our small office, we've made the decision to bring in a server. Right now, we have multiple PCs installed with Windows 8 and Windows 8.1, both basic OEM editions; and several others installed with Windows 7 Home Premium OEM.
In order to insert them into the server's domain, I'm forced to upgrade them to their respective Professional editions, for which I've recently received a VLSC license.
Now, I've been trying to use the MAK keys to upgrade my current OEM versions with no success. Attempting to "Add Features," using 'slui.exe' and 'slmgr.vbs' to install the new key all come back with an error that the keys can't be used.
My question, as such, is whether it is even possible to upgrade Windows 8 Basic OEM to Windows 8 (or 8.1) Pro Volume License?

IE Metro tile is missing from my metro start screen. It's not in the 'all apps' list either. when I go to program default, it is set as the default browser. I went through all the checks in the tutorial on here, but at best, I can only get the desktop IE tile to pin to start. I would rather have the metro version tile on my start.

Last september i formatted my hdd and installed windows 8 ultimate, then updated to 8.1 ultimate, i don't exactly remember when but after some time it was installed desktop icons began to move by themselves. Last month i got an SSD and i decided to just reinstall windows 8.1 PRO from scratch. i did. After 1 or 2 days icons started moving by themselves again. i'm pretty sure there is a recurring way they do it, there must be an even that because of a bug triggers the movements, i haven't been able to determine it tough.
There isn't much more to say other than:
-"AutoArrange Icons" is disabled.
-I tried to download some .ini fixes for similar problem but they fails.
-I tried programs to manually restore icons position manually with a previous save. useless.
-i have no viruses and no strange programs installed.
-At the time i started having the problem i only had: StartIsBack 1.5.2, chrome and Visual Studio.
