Apparently there's supposed to be a checkbox that reads "Show store apps on taskbar" but that isn't there! I have a version of Windows 8.1 that doesn't have this option. I really liked this feature. This worked for me until I installed a fresh installation of Windows 8.1.
View 9 RepliesAfter installing all available updates of windows 8.1, my checkbox for "Show windows Store apps on taskbar" simply disappeared from the taskbar properties. Moreover, the on and off option from Settings -> Change PC settings -> PC and devices -> Corners and edges -> App switching also seems to be forever gone. In other words when I open an app I can't close it (Esc isn't working any more or X option) and I can't see it on the taskbar

View 9 Replies View RelatedIs there a way to make it so Windows 8.1 does not show any of the Modern Apps in the taskbar?
For instance, I like to keep NotePad8, Weather and some others running, but I don't want them taking up Taskbar realestate since (as far as I'm aware at least), those Modern apps will remain open until I close them for good by moving to the upper left part of the screen.
I suspect there's probably something I could do in the registry, and if there is, maybe someone could attach a .reg file for me.
I'm also attaching a screencap of what I'm talking about.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm a new Win 8.1 user trying to setup a more normal looking desktop on my wife's new laptop.
In an attempt to populate the desktop toolbar with apps on the start page, I found it can't be done as explained in the tutorial. Either when I touch/hold the app icon, or right mouse click, the app is checked and the bottom application bar appears. However, on the app bar my only choices are: "Unpin from Start", "Uninstall", or "Find in Start". I'm not given the option of "Pin to taskbar". I also don't see the choices: "Open new window", "Run as admin", or "Open file location" that I see in an example under that tutorial.
I'm running this account in admin mode. The most recent Windows update was 5/2014, with no new updates available when checked today. Is there something wrong or a control panel setting I need to enable to see the other choices?
I have just fixed the PC SETTINGS and STORE APP. As of today all of the apps have been repaired and installed via STORE but the problem still persist. Even though they have been repaired and installed. They can't open on maximized mode. I have already made this steps.
1) Chkdsk /f /r
2.) Reregister Store
3.) Scan for virus via ESET NOD32
4.) Almost all of the options on the thread Apps and Tiles Not Working or Responding: Fix in Windows 8
5.) sfc /scannow
6.) Fixed problems via Advanced System Care Ultimate 7
7.) Fixed problems via CCleaner.
the apps can't be opened.
This happened after I uninstalled all my metro apps this morning, rebooted then reinstalled them. Chrome also updated in the meantime.
They're the only icons that are broke so clearly something has happened between now and then to stop icons displaying properly for new programs.
Is it worth rebuilding icon cache? Not sure the icons for metro are the same as filetype icons in Explorer though.
The Troubleshoot icon that should be under the 'Advanced Startup' Option is missing. System is a new Dell Latitude 10 ST2 Tablet running Windows 8. Have access to 9 other identical tablets, all configured the same and they all have the Troubleshoot Option. Have tried multiple methods of getting to "Advanced Startup" display (including Safe mode, 'shutdown /r /o', etc.), but all result in only having the 'Continue', 'Use a Device', and 'Turn Off your PC' options - No Troubleshoot. Other than missing this icon, system is working fine. Shy of wiping the disk and starting over.

Also the Windows store app is missing so I can't download the apps from the Windows 8 store. What should I do to bring em there? I also have a Windows 8 disc. Using the Windows 8.1 music app, I have properly setup my library to load from my second HDD, but it only loads 80 artists out of over 120. All my music is properly tagged and in Artist/Year - Album/ folder format.

what do I do if the refresh install on Windows 8.1 says that I'm missing files?
I installed Windows 8 from a retail disc and upgraded to 8.1 via Windows Update. I can't use the Windows 8 disc, it says invalid media.
I am trying to use PS Media Server with Windows 8.1, but honestly whatever app I am using is irrelevant. The problem is, when I try to connect my PS3 to PS3 Media Server, it seems to require me to go into the right side menu, click settings, then change PC settings, then click network and then under connections, click my network connection and turn on "Find Devices and Content".
However, as you can see from my screen shot, that option is missing.
I am on my PERSONAL laptop, connected to a private network (it doesn't matter if I use my wireless or wired connection direct to the router it doesn't show up either way). I have tried enabling and leaving a homegroup, neither of which works.

I've got a Lenovo all-in-one 64 bit PC. When I click on Change PC Settings in the Settings charm the 'Wireless' option is missing. It appears exactly as expected on my laptop - also a 64bit windows 8 machine.
(My bluetooth mouse and keyboard are working as is my wireless LAN connection, so it's clearly working but I can't change anything).
I have ASUS S400CA windows 8.1(upgraded from windows8). When I right click for openwith for jpg,png files, I get option of opening with Photo gallery. But in my Dell venue pro tablet with Windows 8.1, I don't get this option. Any way to get it in dell venue 8 pro?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI don't know how long it's been missing, if it ever was there, but I thought it would be handy to have File Explorer on the Task Bar.
I found it on the Applications page of the start menu, right clicked on it, and saw that File Explorer was already pinned to the task bar. I tried unpinning it, then repinning it, but is just doesn't show up.
I'm running 8.1 on an HP desktop, with IE version 11.0.2.
Some time in the past week or so, the bar at the bottom of the page when I am in a browser session, launched from the desktop, no longer appears. It's the one that usually shows the Connection, Safe to Eject, my Norton status, Volume icons, date/time, etc. I use automatic Windows updates, so I'm kind of assuming it was something there that did it...but don't know for sure.
All I want to know is How Do I Get It Back? I especially need that volume control icon, so I can mute all the ads when I open a news video on Yahoo, Bing, or MSN.
This bar shows just fine when I'm looking at the Desktop screen, just not in the browsers.
I did a clean install of Windows 8 like 2 days ago and since yesterday I have noticed that when I am in "Metro" that some icons show up as just squares. For example if I right click on a tile that menu at the bottom will come up and all the icons above the actions are squares or half squares. The mute icon from the charms bar is also a square. I finally took the leap last week and installed a new HD and installed Windows 8 64bit on it. I've been using it and accessing my old apps on my vista drive as well. Today Windows encouraged me to upgrade to Win 8.1, which I did. Now, all the stuff I painstakingly pinned to my taskbar is gone. I have tried to repin it but it says it is already pinned. I have unpinned and repinned, but it still does not show up. In addition, the clock is missing.
I'd really like the use of that desktop/taskbar back.
I upgraded to the CP a few days ago and just noticed a huge problem. The "Show Desktop" tile that is normally on the start screen be default has gone missing. I can't figure out how I got rid of it in the first place, but is there some way to add it back?
I have changed the title to more accurately reflect the problem. A bunch of the features that come with Windows 8 CP (the tablet friendly Settings page, Remote Desktop, the show desktop tile, The Windows Store, etc) all vanished shortly after I installed Windows 8. I tried reinstalling and the same thing happened again.
After a recent Windows update I now have the desktop taskbar appearing when I go into Metro apps. It's annoying because it often hides some on screen info.
I prefer not to use the "auto hide" option and I have not enabled the "Show Windows Store apps on the taskbar" option.
So I noticed the Start button's Windows icon is missing in my metro mode. I'm not exactly sure what it's called, but it's the multitask pane on the left side of the screen that appears when you hover over the top left corner and slide down. Rather than a Windows icon it now assumes the Accent color in PC settings.
I have some modding software installed, such as UxStyle, Aero Glass for Windows 8, and a custom theme, although this issue existed without these installed.

Suddenly i turned on my computer and wrote the password of my user then screen just turned black and nothing came up (not desktop view nor the metro view). Then i moved the mouse and i could see the pointer on the screen so i thought maybe i am on the desktop view (i still guess that's it) but the taskbar from below doesn't show up. I clicked on my keyboard "Windows" button which makes my laptop go to Metro View but it did nothing. All i can do is move the pointer around and use the task manager. Throught the task manager i can open folders, apps etc... but obviously my windows is broken and i dont know how to fix it.
I tried to create a new task (in task manager) "explorer.exe" that did not work.
I just upgraded to windows 8 ( i just bought the upgrade from the microsoft website).
After installing the upgrade I noticed that I was missing ALL the Metro Tiles basic ICONS ie: windows app store, internet explorer, mail , maps , messaging , music , news , people , photos , reader , travel , video ETC...
Check the attached JPGs. YOu will notice the empty tiles in the Metro UI. ALSO if i go to Default Programs you will also see that Icons are missing there as well. It's as if windows has no clue where to find the icons or windows never installed them...
I've rebooted a bunch of time. I tried doing a sfc scan ( or whatever the name is). It said it found some corrupt files and fixed them. I rebooted again but still no icons are showing up.
As much as possible, I do not want to do a fresh install or a refresh. I also have no restore points prior because well its always been like this ever since it finished installing.
Clicking the empty tiles work. It starts the application. Problem is I have no clue which tile is what.
