what do I do if the refresh install on Windows 8.1 says that I'm missing files?
I installed Windows 8 from a retail disc and upgraded to 8.1 via Windows Update. I can't use the Windows 8 disc, it says invalid media.
I recently did an update of my machine from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. The update process did not show any errors or warnings and by the time it finished I was under the impression that everything went smooth.
After the update I was testing the environment and discovered that one of my desktop applications stopped working, I went to the developer's website and indeed I found there is a known issue with their software on 8.1 and to solve it, I had to completely uninstall the software and then install it once more. So I went to Programs and Features in order to do so and to my surprise the Uninstall button was missing from the interface. Right-clicking an item and selecting uninstall from the menu gives a warning message suggesting that the application might have already been uninstalled and asks if I wanted to remove the application from the Programs list. However, clicking OK or Cancel just closes the message box and nothing happens.
So I went and tried to Refresh My PC; Once I clicked Refresh My PC the verification process started and indeed it told my that some system files are missing and that it should take care of it provided I insert my Windows disc. Now since its an OTA update from Win 8 to 8.1 I thought that MS knows that some people will not have a physical copy of 8.1 and so I inserted my Windows 8 Pro System Builder disc hoping it would work, but sadly as you might have guessed, it did not. It told me that I needed the 8.1 recovery disc.
Now I have been looking everywhere for a recovery image to download and use to fix my problem, everywhere I go it suggests that I make my own copy. But how am I supposed to do that if my Windows is faulty and has missing files. I really don't wanna go back to Windows 8 and re-upgrade to 8.1. I have a monitored internet bandwidth and I cannot go and download the 3 GB 8.1 update once more.
How can I repair my 8.1 machine?
I came across this article describing how to get an ISO image for 8.1 with a Windows 8 product Key. However, entering my Windows 8 Pro System Builder (OEM) key in the box fails and tells me that the key I entered is not for this product.
I've had a lot of trouble with my samsung laptop. The HDD has been replaced but I now cannot do a refresh or reset. I get the message"Some files are missing. Your Windows installation or recovery media will provide these files". The laptop came with Windows 8 installed so I do not have the installation discs. I can do a factory restore by pressing f4 on start up successfully but still shows the above message trying to refresh. What caused this and what can I do about it?

Have access to 9 other identical tablets, all configured the same and they all have the Troubleshoot Option. Have tried multiple methods of getting to "Advanced Startup" display (including Safe mode, 'shutdown /r /o', etc.), but all result in only having the 'Continue', 'Use a Device', and 'Turn Off your PC' options - No Troubleshoot. Other than missing this icon, system is working fine. Shy of wiping the disk and starting over.

I had been using my Dell Inspiron 15R 5521 with the factory installed Windows 8 Single Language version with a 1 TB Hard Drive. Its been over an year, i have been using it.
I used to install my programs in the C: Drive and separate my project related files, mp3s, etc in the D: drive so should their be any virus attack or anything unexpected, i could just format the C: Drive and have all my applications re-installed, which is no big deal for me.
Yesterday I had a very unexpected thing go down. My laptop started acting funny, it started restarted on its own over and over again and goes to the big blue screen notifiying me that the laptop had to be restarted.
Since i was under notion my D: Drive is safe, and the worse thing that could happen would a virus attack on the C: drive, i decided to refresh my PC because it was doing all sorts of weird stuff.
After refreshing my PC, I lost the entire D: drive.
Right now, my D: drive is my DVD drive. I can't figure out how to recover the other drive and its files. My Refreshing i had taken a backup as requested by the wizard but i couldnt view what all files are being taken as backup.
Looks like, it has only taken the backup of my C: Drive.
I am trying to use PS Media Server with Windows 8.1, but honestly whatever app I am using is irrelevant. The problem is, when I try to connect my PS3 to PS3 Media Server, it seems to require me to go into the right side menu, click settings, then change PC settings, then click network and then under connections, click my network connection and turn on "Find Devices and Content".
However, as you can see from my screen shot, that option is missing.
I am on my PERSONAL laptop, connected to a private network (it doesn't matter if I use my wireless or wired connection direct to the router it doesn't show up either way). I have tried enabling and leaving a homegroup, neither of which works.

Apparently there's supposed to be a checkbox that reads "Show store apps on taskbar" but that isn't there! I have a version of Windows 8.1 that doesn't have this option. I really liked this feature. This worked for me until I installed a fresh installation of Windows 8.1.

I've got a Lenovo all-in-one 64 bit PC. When I click on Change PC Settings in the Settings charm the 'Wireless' option is missing. It appears exactly as expected on my laptop - also a 64bit windows 8 machine.
(My bluetooth mouse and keyboard are working as is my wireless LAN connection, so it's clearly working but I can't change anything).
I have ASUS S400CA windows 8.1(upgraded from windows8). When I right click for openwith for jpg,png files, I get option of opening with Photo gallery. But in my Dell venue pro tablet with Windows 8.1, I don't get this option. Any way to get it in dell venue 8 pro?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a brand new Asus laptop, bought it about 3 weeks ago. After installing some windows updates I restarted the computer and it it would not boot. Keep getting a quick error message 0xc0000001 and restarts. I have tried booting into recovery and doing automatic repair, tried bootrec's /fixboot, /fixmbr, and /rebuildbcd and and get successfully completed but still does not boot in both secure and non-secure boot. I have done a refresh, which completes successfully, but still not booting. The USERS folder in c:Windows.old does not show any users, even though when I click advanced options in recovery it asks to choose a login and enter a password. I have also checked the USERS folder at c: and :cwindows. Remember I did a refresh and not a reset so my pics should still be their. How can i recover my pics and fix the damn boot.

The Photo Album option still exists but where has the Single Photo option gone?

I've seen all the tips on setting up a dual boot while installing Win 8 with an existing win 7 installation but I can't find any way to add a boot option AFTER installing win 8.I have an image of win 7 that I want to put on another hard drive and then be able to dual boot either 8 or 7.
I tried using easybcd and it appeared to save the entry but it wasn't there when I booted up.
On a side note I also can't seem to change the timeout value before it boots. It always reverts to 30 seconds. I tried msconfig with the same results.
I do have an added boot menu for a recovery via Farstone recovery. It added it to the win 8 boot menu so it must be possible to add the win 7 somehow.
having issue with SkyDrive turning "Access all files offline" option OFF automatically in Windows 8.1 Pro? This happens almost daily, sometimes within few hours of turning it on.

i'm looking for is 100% available offline, all the time. Never had an issue before this integration of SkyDrive with Windows 8.1.
It did an update initially of one file and then of 15 (this on a Monday ...but I hadn't shut it down in a while so figured it was just catching up on patch Tuesday stuff).When it finished and rebooted it won't run properly.
I get a lack screen with the task bar in grey at the bottom of the screen but both are empty.I have previously installed the pokki start menu and initially the pokki symbol was there and using that I managed to get into the control panel and thence to the computer management screens and on one of them there was a message displayed "windows management files are missing".By right clicking on the task bar I can get to the task manager but it shows no running processes under the processes tab.
Tried re installing from my DVD but so far no good unable to get it to oot from the DVD drive, also tried downloading the windows defender offline file onto a USB but again can't seem to get it to run from the USB drive.
I've installed windows 8 on 64GB SSD disk, it shows 59GB available on "my computer", however only 8GB available. And I thought that was a bit much eaten up considering its close to a completely fresh install, so I went in to check around, when selecting properties on all folders, including hidden ones, and waiting for it to count up I find the sum of 21GB space taken. So that's 28GB that's missing, how can that be?
View 8 Replies View RelatedSo I did a disk repair for one of my hard drives (not the system drive ) using check disk because I could not open my folders it would say they were corrupted. This followed me powering off my pc while it was shutting down. So after the chkdisk repair my drive was now functioning ok except for one thing; some of my files and were missing. I could not see any Found.xxx folder even after showing hidden files. I then checked my free space and noticed that it had not changed inspite of the files missing one of which was a folder containing 250GB of data which I cant afford to lose. This has led me to think my data is still on the drive but just hidden somehow. How can I recover this data.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am running into an issue I have never seen. I had a friends laptop that i was upgrading from windows 7. I took out his hard drive and plugged it into my windows 8 machine and backed up the files to my pc and then formatted and installed windows 8.
Once I got it all back up i setup the user profile Matt and then took the hard drive back out the laptop and plugged it into my machine to copy the (my docs, my music, my photos, etc.) back to the laptop drive. So i sat and waited for 2 hours while it copied 100GB back to the laptop drive. Once it finished i plugged the drive back into the laptop and when i booted into windows 8, non of the files appear... Nothing!
The computer doesnt even register that i copied 100GB onto the hard drive. It shows only that i am using 30GB of the 500GB drive which is not the case. When i took the drive out and plugged it into my machine to test, everything showed up as it was. So I confirmed i did copy the 100GB to the laptop drive. But when i put it back into the laptop, nothing shows up...
What could be causing this to happen? Is is because when i had it hooked to my desktop (windows 8) it was using my profile and hid the files?
When i goto the bottom left start square that pops up.. and i right click on it. None of the (computer management, device manager, event viewer, etc.) options don't appear. Could the profile be corrupt?
I was attempting to enable my system protection in order to allow me to restore individual files to a previous state. Unfortunately when I go to do so the option is not available at all.
View 3 Replies View RelatedJust bought a Windows 8 tablet, and not knowing anything about it. Specifically what we were trying to do today was sync his documents from his desktop to the tablet. OneDrive seemed the easiest way to do that, so I installed the OneDrive app on his desktop and logged him in on the tablet. And there were the files. But the problem is, they're on the cloud, and he wants to be able to access them offline.
Through googling, I discovered that there is supposed to be an option in OneDrive to "make all files available offline," supposedly accessible through the Charms bar, under Settings -> Options. But alas, I followed all the directions everywhere, and that option was not there. I took an appropriate screenshot:
Similarly, there is no option to "make available offline" when I access options for individual documents within OneDrive (by swiping up or down).
Why is this option not where it is supposed to be?
My file search is not finding files which I know are there, including files that I find and then try a search to see if windows eight can also find them. I have tried all the solutions' offered by googling 'windows 8 not finding file' such as the troubleshooter . One suggestion was to change the location of where to search to 'everywhere' but this option is greyed out.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI swapped the HDD with a new blank SSD in T530 and booted it with the recovery USB of windows 8. System boots from the USB and gives refresh, reset, and other options. However, when I select reset ( to fresh isntall the OS on the SSD), it fails saying a required partition is missing. What! I'm using a blank SSD, shouldn't the installer present me with options to format and use the drive rather than erring out?
Is there any better way of installing the windows 8 os on a new blank SSD using the recovery USB?
I do have gParted live USB. If nothing works, I will partition the SSD using gParted and try the Windows 8 recovery USB again.
I have a Windows 8.1 x64 and for some time (I guess after the Update 1) my apps have no icon in the taskbar as you can see from the picture the exe files missing icons too and notifications are not working as well removing and installing again didn't work and some of these apps i installed recently.
