I've got a Lenovo all-in-one 64 bit PC. When I click on Change PC Settings in the Settings charm the 'Wireless' option is missing. It appears exactly as expected on my laptop - also a 64bit windows 8 machine.
(My bluetooth mouse and keyboard are working as is my wireless LAN connection, so it's clearly working but I can't change anything).
Ability to do a persistent ad hoc network on windows 8 is playing a big role in a purchase decision of mine...

Since I've got windows 8 nobody was able to connect to me via hamachi, though it works when two others who have windows 8 connect to each other, so i was looking for what was different, and apparently it doesnt let through any data when it's set to "public network".
The problem here is that usually you change it by clicking on the network symbol, right-clicking your network and turn sharing on or off, but hamachi makes up another network which isn't listed in the primary interface. I've tried many things already and I'm kind of looking for a direct cmd-Command which allows me to change it quickly.
So, basically, I try to change a network-setting from public to private without using the "normal way to do it".
I am trying to use PS Media Server with Windows 8.1, but honestly whatever app I am using is irrelevant. The problem is, when I try to connect my PS3 to PS3 Media Server, it seems to require me to go into the right side menu, click settings, then change PC settings, then click network and then under connections, click my network connection and turn on "Find Devices and Content".
However, as you can see from my screen shot, that option is missing.
I am on my PERSONAL laptop, connected to a private network (it doesn't matter if I use my wireless or wired connection direct to the router it doesn't show up either way). I have tried enabling and leaving a homegroup, neither of which works.

The Troubleshoot icon that should be under the 'Advanced Startup' Option is missing. System is a new Dell Latitude 10 ST2 Tablet running Windows 8. Have access to 9 other identical tablets, all configured the same and they all have the Troubleshoot Option. Have tried multiple methods of getting to "Advanced Startup" display (including Safe mode, 'shutdown /r /o', etc.), but all result in only having the 'Continue', 'Use a Device', and 'Turn Off your PC' options - No Troubleshoot. Other than missing this icon, system is working fine. Shy of wiping the disk and starting over.
View 4 Replies View RelatedThis morning I installed an optional update from Windows Update. It was Ralink Technology WLAN 802.11 wireless LAN card.
Since then, when I try to print to my wireless network printer, the network would disconnect then come back on after a while. The update shows up in Update History as successfully installed but not in the installed updates. System restore is of no support here. The network configuration page shows normal. The web does not appear to be affected. I made a new network connection for the printer but it did not work.
Is there a way to reverse this update or should I uninstall the 802.11 LAN card and let windows re-install anew.
The printer is a HP Officejet Pro 8600e
I am trying to set up for media streaming from my PC to my Sony Blu-Ray player using the DNLA. I have a good network connection and have set up all permissions with Homeshare. I get everything done and when I go into Media Player and click on the Stream tab to turn on media streaming nothing happens. Also on my Blu-Ray player there is a DLNA server tab should show up but it does not.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI need configuring file history. I want to have it store files on a shared folder in a local hard rive but I want that folder to be inaccessible to other computers on my home network.
Now its fairly easy to set up a shared folder on a local drive and store file history there but the problem is that other computers can see all my files. I tweaked the sharing permissions on my folder so I removed the 'Everyone' user and put in my user name (which is an admin) and set the permissions to full control. Despite setting the permissions to only my user account, other computers are still able to open the shared file history folder and view and edit its contents.
I can't disable file sharing all together because then it would defeat the purpose of what I am trying to do and also I have another computer on my network store its files on my computer through file history.

I have two networked PCs. On PC1, I have a program file (.exe) that I want PC2 to be able to access, open and use, but not copy or move from it's location. What would be the best permission settings to adjust on PC1 to protect the file?
View 1 Replies View RelatedSince a few weeks, I have a problem with my laptop running Windows 8.1 (Toshiba Satellite P50-A-12PBE). Sometimes, after bringing Windows back from sleep mode, I seem to have no connection to the internet. Windows says the connection is 'limited', wether I'm connected with a wire or wireless. Resetting the router doesn't solve anything, but rebooting my pc does. Since both the wired and wireless network are always simultaneously affected, I think this hasn't anything to do with drivers (I already have the latest versions by the way). I have made screenshots with ipconfig-results when I'm connected with a wire.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have strange issue with Windows 8.1 x64 Pro with Media Center. Since it was upgraded from 8, there have been issues with Software Store. Despite internet connection working fine with Firefox and other applications, Store would not connect to the internet. After long investigation I found out that Proxy server setting in Control Panel -> Internet Options -> Connections -> LAN Settings must be disabled in order to get Store working again. For some reason proxy server only stays disabled for the current session, which means when the windows is rebooted it comes back enabled again. My question is how to make it stay permanently disabled, as I don't use any proxy.

I cannot connect to my wireless anymore (all other devices in my home do) since windows has automatically installed the drivers for my canon printer.
In PC setting i do not have the button wireless anymore (i am pretty sure that i had it last week). Wi-Fi (Qualcomm Atheros AR964x) is in my network connections, but cannot connect. Diagnoses says problem with wireess adapter or access point.
So what did i do until now : I have restarted the whole interne installation ( rounter, and all other devices) many times Atheros driver is up to date and device status is "working properly"
i dont know anymore what to do more (except switching to linux and not being able to use some commerical software i rely on for my work) :-(
I recently upgraded to windows 8.1 pro on my laptop (HP Probook 6560b). This is an old business laptop that used to belong to my mother and originally had windows 7. After upgrading and installing all required drivers there is still no option to connect to the internet via Wi-Fi. (currently connecting via ethernet cable)

Problem:- Can't switch on wifi. The on/off switch is grayed out. While troubleshooting, it says, " wireless capability is turned off".
Solutions Tried:- Re-installed drivers provided by lenovo's website.
Re-installed drivers by windows update.
Reset settings in Bios to default values.
Yes the physical switch is on and the indicator light is glowing.
Fn+ F5 just toggles on/off airplane mode.
Disabled the option so that power management doesn't switches off wifi to save battery.
Other numerous solutions on internet.
The wifi worked flawlessly in windows 7. I even used it as a hotspot (via cmd method).
I have problem wit limited wireless connectivity on my laptop (Samsung) but also on my iPhone 4 and my wife`s LG optimus 5 duo all at the same time. I changed yesterday my router speedport which performed wireless connectivity problems, with a same one- and the problem is actually the same.For every 30 minutes I have limited access on my laptop, iPhone 4 and LG 5. If i restart the router it is OK for a while, and then again the same story. Someone told me to switch off wireless option on both phones, which made connectivity normal on my Samsung laptop.
I repeated, I changed two routers and the problem persists.
After a while when i'm browsing the web etc, my wireless connection goes to Limited and there are no other wireless networks available (when there should be 10+ networks).
When i disconnect that limited connection, there are suddenly no networks found and my wireless adapter disables itself and i can't re-enable it anymore. The only thing to restart my computer.
This occures after a couple of minutes. I had this problem before, but then it fixed itself for a couple of weeks and now i have the same problem again.
I've tried reinstalling my drivers, but doesn't do the trick..

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a Lenovo Ideapad Y500 laptop running Windows 8.1. i7, 8BG ram, 2GB Nvidia card--all that stuff. It ran perfectly for nearly a year. But now, the local area network is broken. I haven't done anything different or changed anything that would affect it, as far as I know. But now that it's summer, I have lots of free time but I can not lan any games with people, which sucks. So I googled and googled, tried the netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt (or whatever it is), tried ipconfig resets and stuff, and none of that works. The wireless lan adapter Media State is still "Media disconnected."
I took this screenshot AFTER I did OneKey Recovery (which is a factory reset). It set my computer back to the original settings: Windows 8, full of bloatware, etc. I did this reset last night, updated it, updated it to Windows 8.1, updated Windows 8.1, and finally, before I went to bed, tested the LAN. It worked, I was able to connect to my Dad's Minecraft world. So I set my laptop to start re-downloading my games (reset deleted all my data), and when I opened it up this morning to play Minecraft with my family, the LAN was not working again. I couldn't connect (or even find) the lan games.
Just setup a N router, works OK with Laptop with Win 8, but unable to connect with Win 8 Desktop. Have entered router keys OK but nothing pops up to click to connect. Been into (Settings) then (Change PC Settings), but no Wireless tab in setting. Type in wireless, PC checks (No wireless). I have Win 8 Disk, can I load wireless driver from Disk if yes how.

However, when I got to PC Settings there are no wireless settings shown, and unlike my other computers around the house I can't find my network or any other networks which is very stranger since I live in an apartment and I'm surrounded by like 20 different networks.

In our home networks, our router differentiates the users/clients with their MAC address and internal IP addresses.
But, this must be different for Wireless ISP's as we can use different PC's any time.
I am using a Windows 8 pro pc connected to the internet wireless. My modem is a 802.11g and my speed should be 8 mb down 1 mb up. However, on the PC I am only getting 1.2mb down, 0.5 mb up on speedtest. When I open a W7 HP laptop, I do get about 8 mb down as stated. Weirdly it is only affecting my pc. I have run the test continuously between the PC and the laptop and the laptop perform better. Tried IE and FF, the speed is slow. My PC specs should be good enough for a fast connection. No folding or torrent or whatever is running in the background, yet the pc is slow. The ping time is faster than the laptop at 42 ms.

I prefer using the wireless connection on my PC, although I do have an active wired connection. Is there a setting somewhere that disables the wired connection automatically when the wireless is active, and also switches back to wired if the wireless disconnects? I have looked into Group Policy Editor at the wireless and wired LAN settings under Network Connections, but don't see any setting to do this automatically.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a Netgear WN111 wireless adapter on my PC. Since installing Windows 8.1 it doesn't connect automatically to the router. The PC says there are no connections available, so I can't even click on the router to try to connect. If I pull the adapter out and push it back into the USB port it connects automatically. Also, when I switch the PC off, the LED on the adapter continues to flash, so I have to pull it out and plug it in again to stop that. I've tried troubleshooting, compatibility check, reinstalling the driver and uninstalling the driver and getting Windows to install one itself.
