On Windows 7 I used to have an option to use the WPS button on the router to setup wifi but I am unable to find that option in Windows 8. Is this still an option and if so where is it located?
View 9 RepliesI am trying to use PS Media Server with Windows 8.1, but honestly whatever app I am using is irrelevant. The problem is, when I try to connect my PS3 to PS3 Media Server, it seems to require me to go into the right side menu, click settings, then change PC settings, then click network and then under connections, click my network connection and turn on "Find Devices and Content".
However, as you can see from my screen shot, that option is missing.
I am on my PERSONAL laptop, connected to a private network (it doesn't matter if I use my wireless or wired connection direct to the router it doesn't show up either way). I have tried enabling and leaving a homegroup, neither of which works.

I have a xbox that I have used (successfully, for about a year) as an extender for WMC 8. Im not sure what I did, but I am now unable to connect to my HTPC running win 8.1 pro. I have tried everything that even sniffs of a solution but I still get the error "unable to find extender". I can use the xbox to watch Hulu, Netflix but no WMC. My PC sees my xbox, however when I try to "test PC connection" thru the xbox System Settings/Network Settings/Test PC Connection I get, "network connected" - OK, then "PC Not Listed". I cant access my PC from the xbox "video player" either.
Ive tried all the popular fixes, turned off firewall, enabled extender services -- only to have them mysteriously disabled as soon as I attempt the extender setup process. Same mysterious disabling of the "Media Center Extenders" checked box in the "Allowed apps to communicate through Windows Firewall". Ive addressed all the sharing issues I can find, still nothing.
I have never used 'Bluetooth' before. I want to transfer a file between my laptop and Android tablet. I turned Bluetooth 'on' (which I have installed the latest driver) on my Windows 8.1 laptop. I turned Bluetooth 'on' on my Android 4.1.1 tablet. I had my laptop search for 'Bluetooth' devices, but my tablet is never found. Is there something I am doing wrong?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI just bought a msi s30 laptop yesterday. So everything went fine when I test the wifi connection before I go to sleep. When I say fine, I mean I could connect to the internet. Then when I woke up this morning, I turn on the wifi but it says "no network found". I check the router and it is working perfectly fine. I also checked the device driver and its also working properly.

It's just the button in the bottom right hand corner (the wireless signal bars) doesn't do anything after I click it on my windows laptop.. It happens every so often disallowing me from connecting to the Internet in times when I need it.
My Internet connection icon/button (either on the desktop to the right of the task bar or on the settings when you slide in from right) doesn't work...
I mean when I click it it does absolutely nothing. Also, when I open the network and sharing center after clicking change adapter settings it loads forever.. I've got work to do and I need the Internet.. I don't know what to do I can't keep switching to Ubuntu..
I can't find the start-button on Windows 8... Also the normal, not the start thing when you press the startbutton on the keyboard. i know my pc, but now its gone..

After upgrading and installing all required drivers there is still no option to connect to the internet via Wi-Fi. (currently connecting via ethernet cable)

I have 3 computers. 1 x Win 8 Pro and 2 x Win 8 Standard.
I know only the Win 8 Pro machine can be a Remote Desktop host.
In System Properties I have checked the box to "allow Remote Assistance to this computer" (I don't know detail, but I am aware this is something different to Remote Desktop).
Also in System Properties, I have selected to "Allow remote connections to this computer". I have also tried to check the sub-section of that "Allow connections only from computers running Remote Desktop with Network Level Authentication (recommended)".
All computers are set up at home, connected to a regular home router.
When I try to connect to the host machine I get an error (I don't have details of that right now, but its some generic "no connection" error).
I've got a Lenovo all-in-one 64 bit PC. When I click on Change PC Settings in the Settings charm the 'Wireless' option is missing. It appears exactly as expected on my laptop - also a 64bit windows 8 machine.
(My bluetooth mouse and keyboard are working as is my wireless LAN connection, so it's clearly working but I can't change anything).
I've been trying to set up an old Savin 9033 printer through the company's router, but I couldn't find the network it's set up on from any other computer.
So I pull up Network & Sharing, see that Network Discovery is turned off.
I check it, go to click on "Save Changes" and nothing happens. I click it a few times and it kicks me back to the previous page, nothing saved. No password prompt or anything.
I double checked that all the appropriate services are running (DNS Client, SSDP Discovery, UPnP Device Host, Function Discoveryr Resource Publication, etc.) and made sure Network Discovery was allowed through Windows Firewall.
I have had to reinstall my laptop and now i'm having some trouble finding the tweak to remove the "insert a smartcard" option from my logon box when i try to connect to an external computer with the remote desktop client.

All the connections are Ethernet and the TV shows as connected in the router, so the problem is with Win 8. It's probably irrelevant but I have installed the Win 8 Media Center pack.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a 32-bit version of XP on my system, so when I do an upgrade within the XP OS. It automatically upgrades me to the 32-bit Windows 8. The actual installation went fine, without a hitch actually.
I have a 64-bit version of Vista that I may go ahead and do a clean install of first, just so I can upgrade to the 64-bit of Windows 8. But when I was going through the upgrade program, I never saw the option to create the ISO DVD or Flash drive. The only options were, "Install now, or install from desktop later". I chose "install from Desktop later" and found that all it did was suspend the installation until I clicked the desktop icon, which then just loaded the upgrade without giving me the option to create the DVD or Flash disk. Is there somewhere I can download the ISO so that I can create a disk?
for a while I've been using netsh to add some IP addresses to the standard windows loopback adapter (interface idx=1) which worked fine until today when I ran windows update.
I have always used this command to assign my loopback adapter an extra IP:
netsh int ip add addr 1 address=111.111.111.111 mask=255.255.255.0 st=ac
(using an example IP address)
But since installing the updates, this returns the following error message:
Failed to configure the DHCP service. The interface may be disconnected.The system cannot find the file specified.
However, when I do "netsh int ip show int" it clearly shows the following interfaces:

and it's not disconnected at all. The only fix I have found so far was reinstalling windows 8.1 and not installing any updates... I just installed the updates again and it stopped working.
I have 2 machines connected via my router/hub (wired). One is running Windows 8.1 and the other Windows 7. Previously I had them sharing perfectly until I did a reinstall of Windows 8 (upgraded to Windows 8.1). I get this message on both machines whilst trying to access shared drives (permissions enabled to read, write, modify for all users):
I have a local account on the windows 8.1 as per previous installation. I have checked all the usual sharing settings and they are the same as in the previous working installation on both machines. I have left the homegroup and created a new one on the windows 8 machine and rejoined on the windows 7 machine all to no avail.
This is a fairly new install of Windows 8 pro (within the last month), and while trying to set up a static ip up today I found that I was unable to access the network properties or disable the connection in the Network Connections. I am pretty stumped as I am the only user of this computer and from what I can tell have the correct permissions to do so. When trying to check the properties it tells me "an unexpected error has occurred" with no further information.

View 9 Replies View RelatedMy main PC, 2 laptops, an iPhone and an iPad all connect to my home wifi network. All worked perfectly until 3 days ago.
The 2 laptops and my PC all run Windows 8.1 (all updated). 3 days ago my Toshiba Qosmio stopped being able to connect to my home network. All other devices still connect perfectly.
The Qosmio doesn't detect my wifi network. I immediately went to the network adapter's (Qualcomm Atheros) website and downloaded the latest driver. Installed it and for a brief (very brief) time it could once again detect and connect to the network. Last 3 days unable to either detect or connect.
It detects other networks fine, and has no problems connecting to any other network - except mine (doesn't even detect mine anymore). It connects to the iPhone (when used as a hotspot) without any issues.
I've uninstalled and re-installed the new driver, re-booted the wireless router (several times), re-set the router to factory settings, used Windows trouble shooter, checked & deleted the netsh profiles. Re-booted the laptop a dozen + times, disabled (& uninstalled software) for the laptop's Bluetooth.
It simply stopped working.
I've tried everything I can find on the web - without any success at all. I've had the laptop sitting only a few cm from the router.
I recently installed a fresh version of Windows 8. Everything went smooth until I tried connecting to a wireless network.It finds the wireless network, after typing in the password (btw its a WPA2-Personal), I instantly get Can't connect to this network.I tried it on another wifi network and it gives me the same problem.Another thing I noticed is that when I right click on the Wifi network I get no options.And when I do it on a wired network I only get the turn on/off sharing option.By the way when connected directly to the router connection is perfect.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have 2 computers, Win 7 Home Edition and Win 8.1 Simple. They are pretty standard .. with a router in between them. (both computers are trusted on the router .. by their mac address and there are no settings restricting anything between the two).
But the issue is that the Windows 8 pc is slow to connect to the Windows 7 pc. I want to transfer files from Win 8 to Win 7 pc .. and almost never the reverse.
It is SLOW to detect the other pc on the network. That is weird to me as is should be fast fast fast .. ?
I always get .. this, but it is a valid network location.
Guess I cannot paste in my error ... but it says
"The drive or network connection that the shortcut 'Win7-Etrunk.lnk' refers to is unavailable. Make sure that the disk is properly inserted or the network resource is available, and then try again."
I only want to transfer normally 1 file .. about 300 kb. So it should be super fast right, cause that is not a big thing I am asking it to do.
The thing is not really the file .. but more the ability for the Windows 8 pc to see the Win 7 pc.
What can I do to test where the bottleneck is?
I am reasonable capable but I do not know much about networking .. however the directory I want to copy into is shared and works.
I purchased an HP Notebook PC 2000-2c20NR last week that came pre-installed with Windows 8. Somehow - I think it was when I was trying to change settings to where I do not have to give a password everytime I log in - I became lost as the Administrator. I am the only one who uses this laptop.
So, now I am stuck, unable to change settings, install/uninstall programs, etc. Everytime I try to change something, I am given this error screen:
As you see, it asks me to type an administrator password, then click Yes. The "Yes" option is greyed out and disabled. I have tried everything I could find to change this, but in order to make any changes, I have to be the Adminstrator (which I am), but this error screen pops up with any and everything I do. I have even tried a System Restore/Recovery, but I can't, because the UAC will not let me continue as Administrator.
The status of my account currently names me a "local user."
I have Norton Internet Security 2013 installed and no viruses, etc are present.
I moved to windows 8 recently and i am not able to connect to my vpn,I checked with support team and they told to change registry name for vpn and In websites also it was like that I did everything like that but still same issue....

2.even if i managed to connect to the network i can't connect to the internet for a while -varies from 5 to 10 minutes-
3. sometimes the network auto disconnects with no error message
4.there is a small '!' above every available network and i remember it disappeared for a while and the networking was perfect
