I've been having this issue since I have installed windows 8.1 that sometimes that opened video games such as Dota 2 would not show on taskbar and I have to alt+tab to get back to see them.
After installing all available updates of windows 8.1, my checkbox for "Show windows Store apps on taskbar" simply disappeared from the taskbar properties. Moreover, the on and off option from Settings -> Change PC settings -> PC and devices -> Corners and edges -> App switching also seems to be forever gone. In other words when I open an app I can't close it (Esc isn't working any more or X option) and I can't see it on the taskbar
Is there a way to make it so Windows 8.1 does not show any of the Modern Apps in the taskbar?
For instance, I like to keep NotePad8, Weather and some others running, but I don't want them taking up Taskbar realestate since (as far as I'm aware at least), those Modern apps will remain open until I close them for good by moving to the upper left part of the screen.
I suspect there's probably something I could do in the registry, and if there is, maybe someone could attach a .reg file for me.
I'm also attaching a screencap of what I'm talking about.
Apparently there's supposed to be a checkbox that reads "Show store apps on taskbar" but that isn't there! I have a version of Windows 8.1 that doesn't have this option. I really liked this feature. This worked for me until I installed a fresh installation of Windows 8.1.
t's very simple, in a Metro app, move your mouse on the top of the screen to show the title bar, then move your mouse quickly to the bottom of your screen, and BAM
I have Windows 8 x64 Enterprise installed and activated through online kms server. my internet is connected and i can browse through my explorers. Some apps such as Mail and internet explorer and store work just fine, but others such as bing and pictures says that i am offline.
I have just fixed the PC SETTINGS and STORE APP. As of today all of the apps have been repaired and installed via STORE but the problem still persist. Even though they have been repaired and installed. They can't open on maximized mode. I have already made this steps.
1) Chkdsk /f /r
2.) Reregister Store
3.) Scan for virus via ESET NOD32
4.) Almost all of the options on the thread Apps and Tiles Not Working or Responding: Fix in Windows 8
5.) sfc /scannow
6.) Fixed problems via Advanced System Care Ultimate 7
I have yahoo messenger 11.5.0.228 in Windows 8 but when i type smileys in chatbox I can see them but when send them there is nothinf to see.take a look at this :
I did the solutions below but nothing work:
1- Uninstall and install an old version 2- I enabled emotions in messenger-->preference-->messages 3- In inter explorer i checked all of the items in internet option-->advanced--->multimedia 4- I installed the latest version of flash player for windows and IE and firefox
I have a brand new Hp Pavilion and while in the process of customizing my desktop and taskbar I found that i am unable to pin anything from the desktop or shortcuts I created (such as Microsoft Word, or the snipping tool) to the taskbar. I have tried all three methods to try and pin.
The only items pinned are the ones already there from the first boot.
I notice that starting when I upgraded from Windows 8 to 8.1, if I open a Windows App (such as the Store), the app will IMMEDIATELY minimize to the taskbar. This does not happen with applications such as IE, but it happens with BOTH Windows and non-Windows apps. This was not happening before the upgrade. I have run Windows Update but it still happens.
I have very annoying problem with Windows 8. The problem is in metro control panel "PC Settings". I don't know what is the reason for removing all apps control in the Notifications menu.
I had this problem so many times and the only fix for this that I know - is to create a new microsoft account or to do clean install (which I don't like to try).
Have Skype on windows surface, however sometimes when I answer the camera doesn't turn on but I can hear voice. I believe it might be might be that I have two different versions on this computer because I can answer one pop-up but still see it ringing. restart tablet and call the person from my windows app and it is fine.
here's the catch---why when I go to my control panel can I not find the program? it shows up on my app screen but clicking all relevant selections on the control panel-it is no where? my past experience says maybe I have two versions on the computer or I need to install and reinstall the program with the latest, but unless I go looking for the actual folder it is non-existant.
PDF files on my laptop show thumbnail previews erratically. Sometimes they do and sometimes they don't. In the attached screenshot, you can see that Word is showing nicely but the PDF file won't. Default app is Reader (the Metro app).
ok basically, if you look at the pic im providing, you can see how skype is grouping multiple windows in the taskbar consistantly and its the only program thats having this issue
I hate it when I double click a file and Windows 8.1 pops up a message saying I have other apps that can handle this extension.
I disabled this notification through GPEDIT.MSC, it works now when I open pics/docs/etc.... but let's say I install another app, for example, when I install Pale Moon Browser,
I hate Windows 8 so much! Even with a start menu replacement, this ticks me off, it's crappy Wireless LAN manager sucks, its performance is less when I benchmarks my SSD
I can go back to 7, but I am trying to fix a few things if I could just to benefit from the UEFI boot mode as for installing 7, I have to enable legacy ROM which is much slower during boot.
I have Windows 8.1 and just noticed this behaviour after reinstalling Adobe Acrobat Pro XI. Say I have a document called A.pdf. I want to rename the file so I right-click, click rename, and type B.pdf. The file still appears in the folder as A.pdf and when I double-click it to open it, I get an error from Acrobat: "There was an error opening this document."
This only happens with PDFs, not with DOCs or TXTs.
The "Pin to Taskbar" function, though always available for programs, appears temperamental in regard to data files (txt, doc, pdf). At the moment I find that if I pin a file to Start, the "Pin to Taskbar" option will then appear if I right-click it on the Start Screen or All-Apps Screen (though it still won't appear in the Desktop environment). But I'm sure I've tried that before and it didn't work then.
At any rate, on one occasion (January 9th) I was able to pin two files to the Taskbar from the All-Apps Screen (after making them appear there by putting shortcuts to them in the Start Menu folder). And yet -- although those two files are still on my Taskbar -- that method fails to work now!
I got my new tablet today and am having no issues with anything except the Store. It takes forever to open but it shows that I have 26 apps needing updates. I clicked on a random app and clicked on install and it just shows pending on my screen. I'm surfing the web, downloading windows updates, etc...
I'm a new Win 8.1 user trying to setup a more normal looking desktop on my wife's new laptop.
In an attempt to populate the desktop toolbar with apps on the start page, I found it can't be done as explained in the tutorial. Either when I touch/hold the app icon, or right mouse click, the app is checked and the bottom application bar appears. However, on the app bar my only choices are: "Unpin from Start", "Uninstall", or "Find in Start". I'm not given the option of "Pin to taskbar". I also don't see the choices: "Open new window", "Run as admin", or "Open file location" that I see in an example under that tutorial.
I'm running this account in admin mode. The most recent Windows update was 5/2014, with no new updates available when checked today. Is there something wrong or a control panel setting I need to enable to see the other choices?
I was unpinning many apps from my start screen. Now when I try to run an app (such as Computer, or Control Panel) it creates an entry on the desktop taskbar, but not on the desktop.
I can't run anything on this Windows 8.0 desktop, except for IE. The only thing I can do with the taskbar icon is close the window.
I recently downloaded "Clover" after reading a tweaks thread, because it seemed cool, and It is pretty cool. The issue I have with it is on the taskbar tab it shows that ugly green image.
I'm having a problem with certain full-screen apps and games disappearing from the taskbar. I can alt-tab to get back to them, however. I've found the problem affecting Hearthstone, XBMC, and Skyrim.
I have started to use NetSpeedMonitor to monitor network speed and bandwidth usage and when it is set to start at boot, it asks to enable its toolbar on a taskbar. Obviously I would prefer, if I would not have to confirm it at every startup.
I currently have it set like this and I wonder, if there is a command like: "/allow":
