View 3 RepliesI have an odd installation issue. I installed an old app that I had when I was using windows xp. Its called Weatherbug Alert. Upon installation, it asks if you want a quick launch icon on the taskbar, and I said yes. It installed, but over by the little icons on the far right. I won't let me move it to were the large icons are on the left, by the start icon. And it won't let me resize it.
Dell Inspiron 3647, 3.0GHz, 4 gig's ram, all windows updates.
I'm setting up a new Windows 8 PC. In my Win7 PC, I have an icon on the taskbar that holds all open folders. I'll call it the "Open Folders" icon. I don't remember how that icon got on Win7's taskbar. How can I create a similar icon on Windows 8's taskbar.
EXPLANATION:
In Win7, say I open the C: drive and click on "Program Files". Then I minimize that window. The "C:Program Files" folder minimizes to the "Open Folders" icon on Win7's taskbar.
Then say I open drive D: and click on a folder named "Photos". Then I minimize that window. The "D:Photos" folder minimizes to the same "Open Folders" icon on Win7's taskbar.
Now if I hover over the "Open Folders" icon on the taskbar, links to the Program Files folder and the Photos folder pop up. I can click the desired folder to open it.
How can I create a similar "Open Folders" icon on Windows 8's taskbar?
Suddenly, when I try to access the control panel, all that happens is the control panel icon shows on the task bar but I can not open it. Nothing happens when I click on it. I've rebooted several times with no change.
View 3 Replies View RelatedAfter installing all available updates of windows 8.1, my checkbox for "Show windows Store apps on taskbar" simply disappeared from the taskbar properties. Moreover, the on and off option from Settings -> Change PC settings -> PC and devices -> Corners and edges -> App switching also seems to be forever gone. In other words when I open an app I can't close it (Esc isn't working any more or X option) and I can't see it on the taskbar
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an issue running a program that is contained in a self extracting zip that is supposed to run automatically.
The SFX files unzips the contents to a folder on my hard disk (no problem), but then tries to run another program (installer.exe) that is located in the extracted folder.
The program fromm inside the SFX runs fine if I set the compatibility to XP manually, but the problem is that the the SFX extracts the files to a different location each time it is run.
Is there a global way to make a program (installer.exe) run in compatibility mode wherever it exists?
I've been having this issue since I have installed windows 8.1 that sometimes that opened video games such as Dota 2 would not show on taskbar and I have to alt+tab to get back to see them.
View 9 Replies View RelatedIs there a way to make it so Windows 8.1 does not show any of the Modern Apps in the taskbar?
For instance, I like to keep NotePad8, Weather and some others running, but I don't want them taking up Taskbar realestate since (as far as I'm aware at least), those Modern apps will remain open until I close them for good by moving to the upper left part of the screen.
I suspect there's probably something I could do in the registry, and if there is, maybe someone could attach a .reg file for me.
I'm also attaching a screencap of what I'm talking about.
Apparently there's supposed to be a checkbox that reads "Show store apps on taskbar" but that isn't there! I have a version of Windows 8.1 that doesn't have this option. I really liked this feature. This worked for me until I installed a fresh installation of Windows 8.1.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm a new Win 8.1 user trying to setup a more normal looking desktop on my wife's new laptop.
In an attempt to populate the desktop toolbar with apps on the start page, I found it can't be done as explained in the tutorial. Either when I touch/hold the app icon, or right mouse click, the app is checked and the bottom application bar appears. However, on the app bar my only choices are: "Unpin from Start", "Uninstall", or "Find in Start". I'm not given the option of "Pin to taskbar". I also don't see the choices: "Open new window", "Run as admin", or "Open file location" that I see in an example under that tutorial.
I'm running this account in admin mode. The most recent Windows update was 5/2014, with no new updates available when checked today. Is there something wrong or a control panel setting I need to enable to see the other choices?
Is there any way to keep all pinned apps. on the taskbar, to the left of all open windows (like in Windows 7 and earlier?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have Windows 8.1 and just noticed this behaviour after reinstalling Adobe Acrobat Pro XI. Say I have a document called A.pdf. I want to rename the file so I right-click, click rename, and type B.pdf. The file still appears in the folder as A.pdf and when I double-click it to open it, I get an error from Acrobat: "There was an error opening this document."
This only happens with PDFs, not with DOCs or TXTs.
What application can I use to open a .bak file? or is there any way where i can open it?

We got a new computer in the office and it is running Windows 8.1. We also have 2 older computers and they are running win XP. I have them all networked together and everybody can see and edit all files on any computer. So far so good. Here is the problem: MS Access will not open any database files. I get the attached popup. The file is not outside my intranet. It resides in a subfolder of "Documents". The folder is called "Data Base Files". As I said, the file can be seen by anu user, but can only be opened in the Windows 8.1 machine, where it resides. Q: how can I open the file on the XP machines? Of cause they all have Access installed. How do I get around the popup?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm on 64 bit and have 8.1 Pro installed. When I double click a file reader does not open. This wasn't the case before the upgrade. Tried multiple times but it just doesn't open. Went to Task Manager and noticed 8 instances of Acrobat Reader and shut them down all one by one. The files started opening again. After a while again I have to go back to the task manager and close reader which is cumbersome and irritating.

My Dell XPS 8700 runs 4 displays. How do I set up my Folder Options so that one particular folder will open up in a particular display everytime when I open it. Every time I open a new folder, it opens up in the display/area where the last folder is/was opened. I had no problem about this in Windows XP.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just installed mouse software on my 8.1 Pro laptop. The software starts every time I start my computer and shows an icon in the taskbar. There is one very annoying thing that it does, when I first login to my computer the notification icon for the mouse software pops up a window saying that it's running:
I opened Customize Notification Area to see if I could turn off notifications BUT keep the icon there (so I can right-click it and open the software).
I noticed there is no option to "Show Icon And Hide Notifications".
So the only way i can keep that annoying popup message from appearing every time I login is to hide everything. But then, as I said above, I won't be able to right click the icon and start the software.
Is there a way I can show icons but hide notifications?
I noticed when I was looking at the custom notification area window that there were entries for programs that I no longer have on my machine:
Is there a way to cleanup/remove these?
I'm using Windows 8.1 x64.
In the MUSIC folder I have 1 folder for each artist. In each Artist folder I have 1 folder for each Album. And in each Album folder I have all the songs, with the cover art embedded in them, in every single .mp3 I have.
In folder options I've set folders to show thumbnails, not icon. So, each Album folder's icon is the album art of the .mp3 files it has inside. BUT in the MUSIC folder, all the Artist folders don't show the album arts they have inside. Their icon is not a folder's icon neither, it's like thumbnails of folders:
And I'd like them to show the thumbnails of the albums they have inside. Well, the maximum amount of images that a folder icon can show is 2, so if I have more than 1 album in an Artist folder, then the icon should be 2 random thumbnails (of 2 albums).
An example here:
I put a song (with embedded cover art) in the desktop. The archive's icon is the cover art.
Now I create a NEW FOLDER (the icon is a default folder icon) called "Album". I put there the .mp3 file. Now, the "Album" folder's icon is the cover art of the .mp3 file.
Then I create ANOTHER new folder called "Artist" (default folder icon), and I put there the "Album" folder. And here, the "Artist" folder's icon is NOT the cover art, but the icon of the image above, and I want it to show the cover art.
Notice that all album's folders have only .mp3 files, not hidden images like "folder.jpg" or anything else, just .mp3 files.
What drives me crazy is that like a week ago, Artist folders were showing cover arts of the albums they had inside (they picked up 2 random images, cause folders can show up to 2 thumbnails).
t's very simple, in a Metro app, move your mouse on the top of the screen to show the title bar, then move your mouse quickly to the bottom of your screen, and BAM

I can tell WD is a streamlined smaller version of MSE. Is this enough to be the sole AV?
How can I pin its icon to the taskbar? (I miss the reassuring green icon of MSE next to power and wi-fi signal icons )
Is there a way to put an icon for the desktop in the taskbar? I just want to get to my desktop easily with one click.
The only way I know to do it now with one click is to left-click in the extreme lower right corner of my screen. The only problem with that is that the area I have to click in is so small that I'm always getting the clock. I can't do it quickly.
Occasionally I want to switch between different keyboard languages (english/german/russian).
Therefore I used in the past the keyboard change indicator menu in Taskbar/Systray.
However recently this indicator disappeared.
How can I Windows 8 tell to re-show it again?
If possible I would prefer to have a registry key + value so that I can create a *.reg script which does the job simply by double clicking.

In windows 8 it was removed and I was happy (I have a keyboard so I just use hotkeys), but in 8.1 it turns on by default and I can't see how to switch it back off.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm running Windows 8 and for the last day or so, the windows icon, bottom left of the taskbar, is not working - it is there, but white - I'm sure it was yellow or so before, and it doesn't work. My windows key is working fine, but I've gotten used to the icon - especially if getting out of, say, a game and wanting to go back to the main screen. Also the right hand top hot key is also not working. What do I have to do to get these back again? I've tried cleaning the registry etc, - would it do a system restore?
Later......Actually it seems to have sorted itself....after trying lots of things, I was doing an update, and got a message that there was a problem, and it was shutting down and rebooting. Anyhow it seems to be working again. Now I know - if it happens again, I'll switch off and reboot!
Windows 8.1 .... I cannot get rid of the safely remove hardware icon no matter WHAT i do. It is currently displaying 3 dots ... and thats it. If i stuff in a usb stick, it will register the stick, and allow me to right click it/eject.. then instead of the icon disappearing, it stays and just shows 3 dots >.<
Is this another one of those onedrive/cloud situations where microsoft made it permanent and we are just supposed to deal?
Any way to get rid of this? If it truly is NOT supposed to be there, any way to find out what is causing it to stay/be popped up?
I literally just went through and installed Wifi drivers for a wifi card ive never even used that came w/ my mobo. BT drivers for a bt card that came w/ my mobo. VGA drivers for haswells on die gpu which is disabled. Marvell controller and disk drivers for the Marvell sata/raid controller on board that is disabled/unused... and enabled my serial port in the UEFI in case that was causing it as well.
Still no luck - which leaves me posting here and trying to uninstall and clean up the thrashing/mess/hurt I just put on my HDD
I have a 17" 1920x1080 monitor, and everything was too small, so I've change the display size to 125%, by default it was on 100% , and now some icons on the taskbar are blurry.
I don't want to change the display size to 100%, I just wanna make the icon sizes smaller. Is there any solution?
Sometimes when I disconnect my wifi and try to swap networks sometime later on, the menu doesn't pop up when I hit the network icon on the taskbar!
Also when I try accessing it through the Control Panel, it's as if my wifi is off and no networks are shown! I've tried closing explorer and restarting it, I've even logged off and tried, but in vain. The only thing that works is restarting my PC, and then it works.
