Remove Windows Icon From Taskbar In 8.1
Feb 10, 2014In windows 8 it was removed and I was happy (I have a keyboard so I just use hotkeys), but in 8.1 it turns on by default and I can't see how to switch it back off.

Remove Hardware Icon In Taskbar?
Jun 5, 2014Windows 8.1 .... I cannot get rid of the safely remove hardware icon no matter WHAT i do. It is currently displaying 3 dots ... and thats it. If i stuff in a usb stick, it will register the stick, and allow me to right click it/eject.. then instead of the icon disappearing, it stays and just shows 3 dots >.<
Is this another one of those onedrive/cloud situations where microsoft made it permanent and we are just supposed to deal?
Any way to get rid of this? If it truly is NOT supposed to be there, any way to find out what is causing it to stay/be popped up?
I literally just went through and installed Wifi drivers for a wifi card ive never even used that came w/ my mobo. BT drivers for a bt card that came w/ my mobo. VGA drivers for haswells on die gpu which is disabled. Marvell controller and disk drivers for the Marvell sata/raid controller on board that is disabled/unused... and enabled my serial port in the UEFI in case that was causing it as well.
Still no luck - which leaves me posting here and trying to uninstall and clean up the thrashing/mess/hurt I just put on my HDD

May 11, 2014I have recently updated to 8.1 update 1 and noticed that there is a new icon (next to the time) in the taskbar to choose either the US or UK layout of the keyboard.
I have chosen the UK layout and wish to now remove this from the taskbar.Is it possible to remove it from the taskbar?

Jan 27, 2014I'm setting up a new Windows 8 PC. In my Win7 PC, I have an icon on the taskbar that holds all open folders. I'll call it the "Open Folders" icon. I don't remember how that icon got on Win7's taskbar. How can I create a similar icon on Windows 8's taskbar.
EXPLANATION:
In Win7, say I open the C: drive and click on "Program Files". Then I minimize that window. The "C:Program Files" folder minimizes to the "Open Folders" icon on Win7's taskbar.
Then say I open drive D: and click on a folder named "Photos". Then I minimize that window. The "D:Photos" folder minimizes to the same "Open Folders" icon on Win7's taskbar.
Now if I hover over the "Open Folders" icon on the taskbar, links to the Program Files folder and the Photos folder pop up. I can click the desired folder to open it.
How can I create a similar "Open Folders" icon on Windows 8's taskbar?
Cannot Remove Homegroup Icon From Desktop (Windows 8.1)
Nov 28, 2013I have a Home group icon on the desktop that I can't remove -- normal desktop icons can be deleted via right mouse click --no option for this. On the Home group icon the delete option doesn't appear on right mouse click.
As I'm running Windows 8.1 ENTERPRISE I don't want or NEED Home-groups.

Windows 8 - Can't Remove System Icon Off Desktop
May 3, 2014I sent my computer to the repair shop and they apparently reinstalled everything. For some reason they put the "Homegroup" system icon on my desktop and I don't want it there, I don't even use that. When I right click it, there is no delete option at all. How to delete this? Its annoying. I really get tired of Windows 8 trying to force me to use things that I don't wish to use.
I noticed when I click on the icon it has the option of "Leave the homegroup". I don't know if that would get rid of the icon or not but I am afraid to click leave the homegroup because they said my windows was corrupted and they fixed it. I am afraid to do anything drastic on my computer for fear it might corrupt it again. It seems like any little thing you do messes up this Windows 8.

Desktop Icon In Taskbar?
May 2, 2014Is there a way to put an icon for the desktop in the taskbar? I just want to get to my desktop easily with one click.
The only way I know to do it now with one click is to left-click in the extreme lower right corner of my screen. The only problem with that is that the area I have to click in is so small that I'm always getting the clock. I can't do it quickly.

Apr 3, 2012I finally found a "problem" with the Windows 8 desktop. Its a problem in Windows 7 too but I had never started a Homegroup. The darn icon won't move and you can't delete it. There is a Windows 7 fix for the problem at HomeGroup Desktop Icon - Add or Remove - Windows 7 Forums and it works with Windows 8.
If you want access to the Homegroup shortcut be sure to pin it to the start menu (I guess we call that the Start screen now) before you delete it.
Window Icon On Taskbar Not Working
Aug 4, 2014I'm running Windows 8 and for the last day or so, the windows icon, bottom left of the taskbar, is not working - it is there, but white - I'm sure it was yellow or so before, and it doesn't work. My windows key is working fine, but I've gotten used to the icon - especially if getting out of, say, a game and wanting to go back to the main screen. Also the right hand top hot key is also not working. What do I have to do to get these back again? I've tried cleaning the registry etc, - would it do a system restore?
Later......Actually it seems to have sorted itself....after trying lots of things, I was doing an update, and got a message that there was a problem, and it was shutting down and rebooting. Anyhow it seems to be working again. Now I know - if it happens again, I'll switch off and reboot!

Network Icon In Taskbar Gets Stuck?
Mar 31, 2013Sometimes when I disconnect my wifi and try to swap networks sometime later on, the menu doesn't pop up when I hit the network icon on the taskbar!
Also when I try accessing it through the Control Panel, it's as if my wifi is off and no networks are shown! I've tried closing explorer and restarting it, I've even logged off and tried, but in vain. The only thing that works is restarting my PC, and then it works.

Aug 13, 2014I'm a new Win 8.1 user trying to setup a more normal looking desktop on my wife's new laptop.
In an attempt to populate the desktop toolbar with apps on the start page, I found it can't be done as explained in the tutorial. Either when I touch/hold the app icon, or right mouse click, the app is checked and the bottom application bar appears. However, on the app bar my only choices are: "Unpin from Start", "Uninstall", or "Find in Start". I'm not given the option of "Pin to taskbar". I also don't see the choices: "Open new window", "Run as admin", or "Open file location" that I see in an example under that tutorial.
I'm running this account in admin mode. The most recent Windows update was 5/2014, with no new updates available when checked today. Is there something wrong or a control panel setting I need to enable to see the other choices?

May 29, 2014I have an odd installation issue. I installed an old app that I had when I was using windows xp. Its called Weatherbug Alert. Upon installation, it asks if you want a quick launch icon on the taskbar, and I said yes. It installed, but over by the little icons on the far right. Is there possible to display the word document title names as extended icon names. Then it wouldn't be necessary to put the mouse pointer over the icons to choose the desired word document because the document names would be displayed in a task bar like two separated icons.

I have installed Classic Shell in an attempt to eradicate as much of Windows 8 as possible. I managed to get the word "Desktop" onto the right side of the quick launch taskbar. I have to click on a tiny arrow next to that word. That brings up a desktop menu but doesn't go to the desktop itself.
How can I get a desktop icon (not the word "Desktop") on the left side of the taskbar next to the start button? In Windows 7 the icon was on the right side but I somehow managed to move it to the left side.
I know about Win D and Win M. Those are okay but I'd rather have an icon to click on to eliminate extra keystrokes.

I am facing an issue with my sound all on a sudden. The volume icon on the task bar has a red cross on it. When I hover on that it says 'No speakers or headphones plugged in' (attachment-1).
When I click on the icon I get a screen like attachment-2 which says 'The peripheral does not appear to be plugged in'.
I checked in the Device Manager to see only 'Bluetooth Headset' listed under 'Sound,video and game controllers'. Also I tried to re-install audio drivers (Real Tech High Definition Audio Driver) which is provided with the laptop to no avail. I don't know whether this is just a driver/windows problem or a hardware problem.

Remove Icon From Notification Area For Active Program?
Mar 11, 2014I have installed a new program (Soundswitch) that I want to keep and I need it running in the background. What I don't need is the icon in the notification area. I only use the program's keyboard shortcut and have no need for the GUI. I keep my notification area very clean and only have icons for the three things I actually use in it. Most programs offer a way to disable their own notification icon, but this one does not. And, unfortunately, hiding the icon through the Windows 8 options created another icon (arrow), which I don't want either.
Is there a way that I can keep the program running but have the icon removed from the notification area?
