View 9 Replies View RelatedPrior to last week my computer was running Windows 7, the computer also has a 3TB MyBook external drive on which I ripped over 100 movies from DVD/Blue-Rays that I own (and still have). The reason for doing that was 1) so I could watch the movies on my TV without the hassle of inserting the dvd into the blue-ray player, and (2) reduce the amount of storage space (I threw away the original containers and put them in a simple DVD file).
Last week I installed a new internal hard drive and did a clean install of Windows 8. Consequently my admin account's user name was changed to be the same as my Microsoft live.com account name. Now I can't access any of the folders on MyBook without taking ownership of them one-at-a-time. That is going to be very very time consuming to do that for over 100 folders. Any faster way to accomplish this?
I don't know why Microsoft won't allow computer Administrator to access any folder on his computer. This is just dumb.
The situation gets even worse -- after taking ownership of the folders I still can't access any of the files or sub-folders. I have to do that for every folder and file, somewhere around 500 of them! I feel like just reformatting the drive and starting all over again.
In windows 8 it was removed and I was happy (I have a keyboard so I just use hotkeys), but in 8.1 it turns on by default and I can't see how to switch it back off.
View 6 Replies View RelatedWindows 8.1 .... I cannot get rid of the safely remove hardware icon no matter WHAT i do. It is currently displaying 3 dots ... and thats it. If i stuff in a usb stick, it will register the stick, and allow me to right click it/eject.. then instead of the icon disappearing, it stays and just shows 3 dots >.<
Is this another one of those onedrive/cloud situations where microsoft made it permanent and we are just supposed to deal?
Any way to get rid of this? If it truly is NOT supposed to be there, any way to find out what is causing it to stay/be popped up?
I literally just went through and installed Wifi drivers for a wifi card ive never even used that came w/ my mobo. BT drivers for a bt card that came w/ my mobo. VGA drivers for haswells on die gpu which is disabled. Marvell controller and disk drivers for the Marvell sata/raid controller on board that is disabled/unused... and enabled my serial port in the UEFI in case that was causing it as well.
Still no luck - which leaves me posting here and trying to uninstall and clean up the thrashing/mess/hurt I just put on my HDD

I sent my computer to the repair shop and they apparently reinstalled everything. For some reason they put the "Homegroup" system icon on my desktop and I don't want it there, I don't even use that. When I right click it, there is no delete option at all. How to delete this? Its annoying. I really get tired of Windows 8 trying to force me to use things that I don't wish to use.
I noticed when I click on the icon it has the option of "Leave the homegroup". I don't know if that would get rid of the icon or not but I am afraid to click leave the homegroup because they said my windows was corrupted and they fixed it. I am afraid to do anything drastic on my computer for fear it might corrupt it again. It seems like any little thing you do messes up this Windows 8.
I can tell WD is a streamlined smaller version of MSE. Is this enough to be the sole AV?

I have installed a new program (Soundswitch) that I want to keep and I need it running in the background. What I don't need is the icon in the notification area. I only use the program's keyboard shortcut and have no need for the GUI. I keep my notification area very clean and only have icons for the three things I actually use in it. Most programs offer a way to disable their own notification icon, but this one does not. And, unfortunately, hiding the icon through the Windows 8 options created another icon (arrow), which I don't want either.
Is there a way that I can keep the program running but have the icon removed from the notification area?
I have Task Manager running all the time, but I don't want the icon in the system tray when it's not hidden, because it's extra clutter. How to remove it..?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to remove an icon from my windows 8 start menu. I have uninstalled the program (Diablo 3), but the icon remains under the games category. If I right click I get the option to uninstall, which brings me to the program uninstaller under control panel; Diablo 3 is not listed here. Right click also allows me to "open file location" which gives me the games screen as seen below. Right clicking on Diablo 3 here does nothing. I have no option to delete the entry.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI finally found a "problem" with the Windows 8 desktop. Its a problem in Windows 7 too but I had never started a Homegroup. The darn icon won't move and you can't delete it. There is a Windows 7 fix for the problem at HomeGroup Desktop Icon - Add or Remove - Windows 7 Forums and it works with Windows 8.
If you want access to the Homegroup shortcut be sure to pin it to the start menu (I guess we call that the Start screen now) before you delete it.
Lenovo laptop with Win 8.1. I uninstalled the pre-installed McAfee anti-virus with:
- Uninstall McAfee in Programs and features
- Reboot
- Run the MCPR McAfee uninstall utility
- Reboot (many times)

I've just installed a new HP laptop for my sister, who's upgraded from an old XP desktop. In doing the install, I have inadvertently created two user accounts (I'm new to Win 8), both with passwords. It was there and then it's gone. I have uninstalled it and then installed a new copy from a fresh download. Maybe this is something new but I feel a lot more secure with the icons showing.
I have been using Windows 8 Pro 64bit version for a few months now and after a few teething problems I love it. I have disabled the UAC via the control panel, registry and the Local Security Policy editor etc... so now I don't get any popups at all. It's come to a point though where I now want to try out some of the apps but can't because without the UAC turned on I can't run any of them.
My question is is it possible to keep UAC turned off but still be able to run these apps?, I would love to know any tweak I can use to enable this but I won't compromise system stability for it.
I'm trying to fully disable User Account Control on Windows 8.1 using regedit.exe, but changing ENABLELUA value from 1 to 0 ( enablelua is located on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesSystem) is not working anymore.

This is for those of you who disable UAC on their systems and have been getting annoyed that DP doesn't disable UAC completely even though the slider is pulled all the way down and the user is Admin.
So, just open regedit and locate this key.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesSystem
In the right pane look for EnableLUA and modify its value to 0. Close regedit.
Done.
Disclaimer: This is not meant to encourage people to ditch UAC or even to use this method. Peeps who disable UAC are expected to know their way around.
Warning Setting the EnableLUA to 0 will make all metro apps stop working until you set it back to 1 and restart the computer.

I hardly ever turn off my computer, I just put it to sleep. But once a week I turn it off and I did last night. When I turned it on this a.m. My Internet Explorer had AVG secure toolbar and search. I do not want it, I did not ask for it and I cannot remove it.
There should be a law against people putting stuff on your computer that you can't remove. I called Microsoft and they told me I had to pay to get rid of it. I will not, nor can I pay. I'm on Social Security. This is BS.

View 5 Replies View RelatedSo I've been running the 8.1 Pro Preview since it went live, and I gotta say, I'm pretty happy with it overall, one thing that's bothering me though is that I can't seem to find a way to disable Windows Defender completely through either gpedit.msc or services.msc (it's grayed out).
In 8.0 there was a setting for disabling Defender completely through gpedit.msc, now in 8.1 they added a bunch of new settings in the Defender tab but none that clearly states the disabling of Defender, maybe I'm missing something here?.
I have a directory that contains about a hundred batch files, each which starts up a ssh terminal connected to a different server. When I run one, I get the "SmartScreen" message saying that Windows is preventing an unrecognized app from starting. I can click "more info" to run it anyway, and from then on it'll run as it should. I'm hoping there's a way to select all the files at once and disable SmartScreen for them.
I know I can disable SmartScreen altogether, but it seems like it could be preferable to leave it on, as it might be protecting my system from malware and what not. I guess if that's the only way to easily get all apps I want to use to not be blocked, that's what I'll have to do.
