Oct 23, 2013I was recently installing and checking out Window 8.1. Everything is going just fine and with stuff like Start8 and Modernmix i personally feel i can maintain my old and preferred workflow (so, for the rest i can enjoy any new features that are now available!).
Anyway, as i was installing some of my software (and migrating settings from Windows 7 for some of them)... i came to some game launcher i use for Arma 2 called PlaywithSIX.
I had to install it a few times and the update mechanism was a bit fishy imo. For example; i could not even select where i wanted to install the applications (no extra options nothing), it just went straight into my Program Files folder.
After my install debacle i decided to make sure the system tray icon would always be shown and configure it when i stumbled upon the following:
Appearantly the app made several system tray icon entries, for having been started from several locations.
Is there any way to clean these entries in regedit somewhere or something? I hate having double entries in there for no reason....

Feb 1, 2014There is an icon that shows up at every start up.
It is a camera application for sure, but I couldn't find what it is neither from task manager/startup nor from programfiles/x86?
It shows as disconnected, therefore I can't start the application.
Open property page, special effect, snap shot, zoom, face tracking are all grayed out and the only option is exit.
I couldn't even make the icon bigger.Does this sound familiar?
It is a newly installed OS and probably hundred drivers and programs were installed in one day, so it is hard to figure out which one was that.

Jun 12, 2014I've been using Onedrive since it was skydrive under windows 7 , now that I am on 8.1 update 1 pro x64 I am still using it but recently I've come across with a problem.
The onedrive tray icon says that onedrive is starting up all the time , no matter what I am doing e.g. : syncing or adding files and the icon remain the same like in the picture.

Sep 15, 2014Ever since I have been working with Windows 8 I have received error messages stating "There was a problem sending the command to the program". It will be a document that I have created in word or excel on the exact same computer. I click on the folder in my library, find my document, double click on it, word or excel appears to start to open as a box displaying one or the other appears and then the error message appears. I click on "OK" in the error message and see the word or excel icon in my lower tray - click on that and there is my document. Not a huge deal but definitely not the way things should work..

Aug 26, 2012Windows 8 boots up pretty quickly, but it takes a notably long time (compare to Windows 7) for it to show up the system tray applications. In Windows 7 it is almost instant.
Is this Microsoft's problem or the app maker's problem?
Also, the apps seem to load sequentially. Is there a way to rearrange them so that the ones I want load quickly. I need AutoHotKey, Logitech Setpoint and Logitech Gaming Software to load up ASAP. Rest can take their sweet time.
Also this is what the TaskManager's startup performance analysis looks like.
Having this *feature* means that Microsoft can blame the app maker for the slow startup. But why doesn't that happen in Windows 7? Is this because Desktop is another app, and stuff don't really get priority?
Also I still cannot find why PeerBlock would not start when placed in the classic Startup folder.

Windows 8 - Can't Remove System Icon Off Desktop
May 3, 2014I sent my computer to the repair shop and they apparently reinstalled everything. For some reason they put the "Homegroup" system icon on my desktop and I don't want it there, I don't even use that. When I right click it, there is no delete option at all. How to delete this? Its annoying. I really get tired of Windows 8 trying to force me to use things that I don't wish to use.
I noticed when I click on the icon it has the option of "Leave the homegroup". I don't know if that would get rid of the icon or not but I am afraid to click leave the homegroup because they said my windows was corrupted and they fixed it. I am afraid to do anything drastic on my computer for fear it might corrupt it again. It seems like any little thing you do messes up this Windows 8.
Computer Desktop Icon Shown As 32bit On 64bit System?
Aug 30, 2013after doing a clean install of Windows 8 pro 64bit and installed windows updates.After the first restart "My computer" desktop icon shown up as "My Computer 32 bit" .I had some customized context menu on right click and that dissapeared too,the context menu customization still exists on registry at the computer clsid but no luck with the "My computer 32 bit" desktop icon that Im having now.....

Aug 12, 2012Task Manager, or as I like to call it, El Diablo, has defeated me. My goal is : Like in past Windows, set it up so that it minimizes to the tray when it's run automatically upon login (or startup).
This never used to be a problem:
1) Run Task Manager and set Options/Minimize on Use.
2) Put a shortcut to taskmgr.exe in your Startup group
3) Access the properties of that shortcut and set Minimized.
Note: A new thing in Win8 is that Task Manager will not run on Startup at all unless it's run as admin, so be sure to set that in the shortcut.
But this doesn't achieve the goal, since Task Manager is minimized to the taskbar, so you have to click it to open and then click minimize for it to go to the tray.
I'm assuming this is a bug, but no matter. So I turned to Task Scheduler, but nothing I tried there worked any better.
I even tried incorporating NirCmd, using a command like you see below, but it only wants to work when I run it manually from a command prompt, not from a scheduled batch file.

Apr 30, 2013I notice a short flicker from desktop icons when you press the "win+d" short cut. Sometimes some application windows also flicker when you use this short cut.
I guess the reason is some kind of refresh for the icons, actually it seems to be the same behaviour when you use the context menu on the desktop (right mouse click) and use the command "refresh".
It can easily be seen when you are on the desktop with all it's icons and have a small window open and then press win+d a couple of times. The Icons refresh and therefore flicker. That should be smoothed out.I notice this behaviour in Windows 8, Win7, XP.
This is no problem with a similar command in OSX or Ubuntu.
Can't Add SkyDrive To Favorites
Sep 5, 2013On my Surface RT, I signed in with a LOCAL account (since I hate having to put in passwords to unlock it), then used my Microsoft account to sign into the Store, Skype, SkyDrive and all the other apps.
However, even after signing into SkyDrive, there is no folder for it in the Favorites library, so I have no way of accessing my files from the Desktop. The SkyDrive "app" itself is useless, I can't even copy the files to my local drive (and I have things like Windows 8 themes, which cannot be opened directly from Metro)
I tried uninstalling the app and re-installing it, somehow it remembered my Microsoft account login and showed my files again, but STILL no shortcut in Explorer! What gives?

The problem is I can put it in documents folder in skydrive folder, but when I need to download it from skydrive, skydrive flags it as a possible virus and stops the download. OneDrive And SkyDrive In Windows 8.1?
Sep 14, 2014I have been using Windows 8.1 desktop (Dell 8700) for a little more than 6 months. I am very happy with its performance. The computer is very fast. But here is one hitch. As all of you might know that the original SkkyDrive was converted into OneDrive during Microsoft auto-updating process. OneDrive is the one supposed to be used.
Right now, I see both SkyDrive and OneDrive folders in the computer (even in my Windows 7 computers). There is no SkyDrive in "Uninstall program". So I could not remove the SkyDrive folder. Just "delete" SkyDrive folder" does not work either. Because of this problem, I was not able to study how to use OneDrive.
What is interesting to me is that SkyDrive seems to be still active and OneDrive, dormant. For example, c:UsersusernameOneDrivePicturesCamera Roll is active. The Camera Roll folder in the SkyDrive shows all pictures taken today with iPhone. On the other hand, OneDriveCameral Roll folder has a few old pictures.

Jun 9, 2013Running Windows 8 HP. I just installed Skydrive and I wanted to set up sync. No such possibility. The only place my Skydrive shows up is in the library, in windows explorer. For nwo it's empty. On some windows 8 forum it is said that that to set up syncing you need to click on the icon in the taskbar. Well, it's not there. I know you can customize the notification area. But it's not there either, visible or invisible. What now? Should I reinstall the app?
