Any software to either enlarge the tray desktop clock display or replace it? I know I can hover the mouse on Settings to get the large panel display. But I'd rather just be able to read it. Of course I'm looking for freeware.
I have an HP Laptop with windows 8.1. I would like the clock on the task bar to show the seconds, or else install one on the desktop as in the Vista sidebar.
Windows 8 boots up pretty quickly, but it takes a notably long time (compare to Windows 7) for it to show up the system tray applications. In Windows 7 it is almost instant.
Is this Microsoft's problem or the app maker's problem?
Also, the apps seem to load sequentially. Is there a way to rearrange them so that the ones I want load quickly. I need AutoHotKey, Logitech Setpoint and Logitech Gaming Software to load up ASAP. Rest can take their sweet time.
Also this is what the TaskManager's startup performance analysis looks like.
Having this *feature* means that Microsoft can blame the app maker for the slow startup. But why doesn't that happen in Windows 7? Is this because Desktop is another app, and stuff don't really get priority?
Also I still cannot find why PeerBlock would not start when placed in the classic Startup folder.
But when I right-click on an item, and point to Send to, it doesnt have Desktop (Shortcut) features
I followed some instruction on the internet (shell:sendto and create Desktop (create shortcut).desklink but it's still missing (
Now I realize that my Windows 8.1's version is a Lite version (using WinReducer8.1). Someone who create this version had removed Windows Mail (Send To Desktop Shortcut) so every solution on the Internet is impossible to solve. Finally I have to reinstall an offcial windows and STD is back
This is how I have come to best like displaying the Applications folder I keep on my Windows8 Desktop Taskbar. Listed in alphabetical order it's how I can pull or access anything I may want @ any given moment w/out leaving Desktop to look for something. I simply scroll up & down for the desired item & it saves changing screens to go get something. A few, like Weather, Calendar, News I'll usually keep sitting on the APP Bar @ the top-left of the Desktop.
I'm trying to keep the windows 8 start screen open on one screen and have the other open to the desktop, but any time I click an app on the desktop the 2nd screen with the Windows 8 start screen minimizes. Is there any way to change this behavior?
I bought an Alienware M17x R4 with a pre installed windows 8 64 bit operating system then updated to windows 8.1 via windows update. My problem is that it won't run the Alienware OSD application which is supposed to replace the default windows icons when using the function keys. I tried researching and tried various methods including this one but to no avail. Link here...
I'm running Windows 8 and like that Microsoft decided to extend the task bar to my secondary monitor. However, I think they should take it one step further. Why can't we have the clock on both of the taskbars as well? Picture this scenario:
You got up at 7am and have class at 9:30am. With 2 and a half hours of free time, you decide to play Skyrim. However, because Skyrim runs full screen, you can't easily view the clock unless you either alt-tab out or (if you are running Steam) shift-tab to bring up the game overlay. You could also find a desktop gadget to stick on your other monitor, but why not simply duplicate the notification tray and system clock onto the other monitor.
The Photos app on my Windows 8.1 Pro PC won't show any pictures either in the Pictures Library or in OneDrive. It only can display folders but not pictures. In other Windows Store apps, another weird things happens. The photos show up but with no thumbnails. I tried a reformat and reinstall and the problem disappeared. That is until I signed in my Microsoft account. The problem comes back.
NOTE: I'm using Hotspot Shield because an error appears every time I install Windows updates or Windows Store apps. I use Hotspot Shield to bypass this error but even disabling it doesn't solve the problem.
My client has Windows 8 installed (with Windows 7 desktop, lolwut?), it's connected to the internet.
The clock changes every 10 minutes, despite being synchronised to internet time.
Here's some extra, straight forward information; Machine - HP Pavilion G6 Time setting - London Problem - Clock (System Time) keeps changing incorrectly after about 10 to 30 minutes.
I keep getting Clock Watchdog Timeout and it is pretty annoying because the only way to get rid of that pesky blue screen is to turn the power strip off and then my clock, printer, TV, lamp and everything goes off. Is there a problem with my CPU or drivers??
Running Windows 8.1. Have admittedly modified it quite heavily but what I have screwed up.
Pretty much, any apps which have the purple wheel splash screen do not load (presumably crash). Normal windows settings work fine. Windows applications and Metro apps works with no hitches (I have none downloaded but default Music, Games all start with no issues).
I've been using Onedrive since it was skydrive under windows 7 , now that I am on 8.1 update 1 pro x64 I am still using it but recently I've come across with a problem.
The onedrive tray icon says that onedrive is starting up all the time , no matter what I am doing e.g. : syncing or adding files and the icon remain the same like in the picture.
I initially created the thread below but I have since discovered the problem relates to many apps and not just the People app.
People App Opens then Crashes to Desktop
I have a new Dell laptop running Windows 8.1 Core Edition. After only a week I found most of the apps would crash to the Desktop on opening. I thought I had solved the problem by creating a new user account and reinstalling the apps but that only worked for a week before the same problem reappeared.
This is what I have discovered to date:
Initially most apps crashed on openingReinstalling the apps made many of them work but there are still some issues e.g. selecting Maps within Bing weather causes the app to crashThe apps work fine in a new user account or in other local accounts I have not used much to dateNone of the steps recommended in Apps and Tiles Not Working or Responding: Fix in Windows 8 solves the problemI've spent an hour with Microsoft Support who have found no obvious problem and have escalated the problem to the next tier
The problem appears to be due to access rights and priveliges in user accounts since the apps work in other accounts or if I create a new account.
Where the apps are located for each user account and whether there is way of checking that they are set up to have the correct access rights and privileges.
I open up my Live tiles screen on my 2nd monitor. When I open an app, say facebook. All is fine. When I drag from top of screen to bottom with my mouse to close the app, it goes to desktop. Is there a way for me to go back to the Live tiles screen?
Also, is it possible to have the live tiles screen visible all times on my 2nd monitor. I use Stardocks Start8.
I am tired of having a computer in my bedroom waking up sometimes multiple times in the morning hours--like approximately 3 or 4 A.M. Support people have tried to stop this operation but to no avail. It still is doing it although less frequently now. This morning at 3:14 A.M., it woke up automatically and then shut down a few minutes later.
In Event Viewer it said at 3:14 A.M.: The system time has changed to 2013-10-06T10:14:28.500000000Z from 2013-10-06T06:11:17.671868600Z. Change Reason: System time synchronized with the hardware clock. I attached a screen shot of the info in Event Viewer, for your reference.
Why does the computer have to do this at 3:14 A.M.? Can't this occur some other time like during the day when the computer is running?
Task Manager, or as I like to call it, El Diablo, has defeated me. My goal is : Like in past Windows, set it up so that it minimizes to the tray when it's run automatically upon login (or startup).
This never used to be a problem: 1) Run Task Manager and set Options/Minimize on Use. 2) Put a shortcut to taskmgr.exe in your Startup group 3) Access the properties of that shortcut and set Minimized.
Note: A new thing in Win8 is that Task Manager will not run on Startup at all unless it's run as admin, so be sure to set that in the shortcut.
But this doesn't achieve the goal, since Task Manager is minimized to the taskbar, so you have to click it to open and then click minimize for it to go to the tray.
I'm assuming this is a bug, but no matter. So I turned to Task Scheduler, but nothing I tried there worked any better.
I even tried incorporating NirCmd, using a command like you see below, but it only wants to work when I run it manually from a command prompt, not from a scheduled batch file.
I have Task Manager running all the time, but I don't want the icon in the system tray when it's not hidden, because it's extra clutter. How to remove it..?
Is there a way to have the settings on the system tray instead of on the right side of the screen and have it visible instead of having to go after it all the time?
In windows 8.1 start screen, if I go to the all apps view & sort by category, the first category is 'desktop'. What determines which apps are listed here? Only some of my desktop apps are listed. Can I edit the list? Likewise, if I sort by name, the first group of apps includes only a subset of all my apps - can I edit that list?
I was recently installing and checking out Window 8.1. Everything is going just fine and with stuff like Start8 and Modernmix i personally feel i can maintain my old and preferred workflow (so, for the rest i can enjoy any new features that are now available!).
Anyway, as i was installing some of my software (and migrating settings from Windows 7 for some of them)... i came to some game launcher i use for Arma 2 called PlaywithSIX.
I had to install it a few times and the update mechanism was a bit fishy imo. For example; i could not even select where i wanted to install the applications (no extra options nothing), it just went straight into my Program Files folder.
After my install debacle i decided to make sure the system tray icon would always be shown and configure it when i stumbled upon the following:
Appearantly the app made several system tray icon entries, for having been started from several locations.
Is there any way to clean these entries in regedit somewhere or something? I hate having double entries in there for no reason....
