View 9 Replies View RelatedIn windows 8 it was removed and I was happy (I have a keyboard so I just use hotkeys), but in 8.1 it turns on by default and I can't see how to switch it back off.
View 6 Replies View RelatedWindows 8.1 .... I cannot get rid of the safely remove hardware icon no matter WHAT i do. It is currently displaying 3 dots ... and thats it. If i stuff in a usb stick, it will register the stick, and allow me to right click it/eject.. then instead of the icon disappearing, it stays and just shows 3 dots >.<
Is this another one of those onedrive/cloud situations where microsoft made it permanent and we are just supposed to deal?
Any way to get rid of this? If it truly is NOT supposed to be there, any way to find out what is causing it to stay/be popped up?
I literally just went through and installed Wifi drivers for a wifi card ive never even used that came w/ my mobo. BT drivers for a bt card that came w/ my mobo. VGA drivers for haswells on die gpu which is disabled. Marvell controller and disk drivers for the Marvell sata/raid controller on board that is disabled/unused... and enabled my serial port in the UEFI in case that was causing it as well.
Still no luck - which leaves me posting here and trying to uninstall and clean up the thrashing/mess/hurt I just put on my HDD
I have recently updated to 8.1 update 1 and noticed that there is a new icon (next to the time) in the taskbar to choose either the US or UK layout of the keyboard.
I have chosen the UK layout and wish to now remove this from the taskbar. Is it possible to remove it from the taskbar?
I just got a laptop that has a touch keyboard which I never plan to use. I have Start8 running and I use only the desktop UI. I go to task bar properties/toolbars and uncheck the touch keyboard apply and OK, and the icon disappears as it should. But when I restart it has returned. Is there a way to get rid of it..
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Home group icon on the desktop that I can't remove -- normal desktop icons can be deleted via right mouse click --no option for this. On the Home group icon the delete option doesn't appear on right mouse click.
As I'm running Windows 8.1 ENTERPRISE I don't want or NEED Home-groups.
how to get rid of the icon.
I sent my computer to the repair shop and they apparently reinstalled everything. For some reason they put the "Homegroup" system icon on my desktop and I don't want it there, I don't even use that. When I right click it, there is no delete option at all. How to delete this? Its annoying. I really get tired of Windows 8 trying to force me to use things that I don't wish to use.
I noticed when I click on the icon it has the option of "Leave the homegroup". I don't know if that would get rid of the icon or not but I am afraid to click leave the homegroup because they said my windows was corrupted and they fixed it. I am afraid to do anything drastic on my computer for fear it might corrupt it again. It seems like any little thing you do messes up this Windows 8.
Okay. basically I think I tried everything, this is so stupid but it's a real problem look at the picture down below, how do you remove the shield? so it's back to normal it's quite annoying.

I have installed a new program (Soundswitch) that I want to keep and I need it running in the background. What I don't need is the icon in the notification area. I only use the program's keyboard shortcut and have no need for the GUI. I keep my notification area very clean and only have icons for the three things I actually use in it. Most programs offer a way to disable their own notification icon, but this one does not. And, unfortunately, hiding the icon through the Windows 8 options created another icon (arrow), which I don't want either.
Is there a way that I can keep the program running but have the icon removed from the notification area?
I have Task Manager running all the time, but I don't want the icon in the system tray when it's not hidden, because it's extra clutter. How to remove it..?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am trying to remove an icon from my windows 8 start menu. I have uninstalled the program (Diablo 3), but the icon remains under the games category. If I right click I get the option to uninstall, which brings me to the program uninstaller under control panel; Diablo 3 is not listed here. Right click also allows me to "open file location" which gives me the games screen as seen below. Right clicking on Diablo 3 here does nothing. I have no option to delete the entry.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI finally found a "problem" with the Windows 8 desktop. Its a problem in Windows 7 too but I had never started a Homegroup. The darn icon won't move and you can't delete it. There is a Windows 7 fix for the problem at HomeGroup Desktop Icon - Add or Remove - Windows 7 Forums and it works with Windows 8.
If you want access to the Homegroup shortcut be sure to pin it to the start menu (I guess we call that the Start screen now) before you delete it.
My laptop boots up and I see that the little windows shortcut arrows on my desktop aren't there. I run my pointer over the icons of the programs and the shortcut arrows appear.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI notice a short flicker from desktop icons when you press the "win+d" short cut. Sometimes some application windows also flicker when you use this short cut.
I guess the reason is some kind of refresh for the icons, actually it seems to be the same behaviour when you use the context menu on the desktop (right mouse click) and use the command "refresh".
It can easily be seen when you are on the desktop with all it's icons and have a small window open and then press win+d a couple of times. The Icons refresh and therefore flicker. That should be smoothed out.I notice this behaviour in Windows 8, Win7, XP.
This is no problem with a similar command in OSX or Ubuntu.
I was playing Battlefield 4 for about 15 minutes, after I was finished I closed the game and my PC just died, as if I got a blue screen without the actual blue screen, fan speed of psu went to max and stayed that way until I restarted it multiple times, none of those times did it actually boot or display anything on the monitor.
Now when I start up my pc it turns on but nothing happens, display doesn't even come on and keyboard and mouse light up and turn off again.
I am currently running with a HP 15.6" Envy Laptop PC, Midnight Black, dv6-7229wm - Walmart.com I have not had problems before. While I was playing Diablo 3, on medium settings, the thing just cut out. The first time, i didn't think anything about it. I turned it back on, and it turned off again twice during the HP boot logo. So i took out the battery, waited a little and started playing Diablo 3 again, and in about half an hour it turns itself off again. Each time it turns off, there is the pop of the audio going out. So, i turned MSI after burner on (I have not over clocked this system, I just have MSI to watch the heat when I was messing around one day)
Anyway, here are the last three temperature logs from MSI afterburner before it turned itself off.
Code:
02, 24-05-2013 15:09:13, GPU1 temperature ,GPU2 temperature ,GPU3 temperature ,GPU1 usage ,GPU2 usage ,GPU3 usage ,GPU1 core clock ,GPU2 core clock ,GPU3 core clock ,GPU1 memory clock ,GPU2 memory clock ,GPU3 memory clock ,GPU1 memory usage ,GPU2 memory usage ,GPU3 memory usage 80,
[Code] .....
The log isn't coming out how I wanted to, but it was about 95-99 for all of it. I am playing on a table (As level as a table can be on a 40 year old brick floor), with nothing anywhere near the laptop.
How do I find this "feature" in windows 8.1 so I can turn the darn thing off: Prevent Windows From Being Automatically Arranged When Moved To The Edge Of The Screen Total frustrating not being able to have windows on my screen without them all automatically maximizing! I searched under mouse, and Aero, , but its just not visible to me.
View 6 Replies View RelatedGot a gigabyte card. Came with an intel core i53470, 3.2ghz, overclocked to 3.6. I have some problems, and everyone is telling me to turn it off.
So I'm in the Gigabyte UEFI DualBIOS Screen, looking at the M.I.T. menu, and it doesn't let me change anything. How do i undo the overclocking?
I was using Avast, and I suspected it might be causing me certain issues, so I uninstalled it, and presently I use Windows Defender for active protection, and Malwarebytes free edition for scans.
problem is that Defender periodically turns off, and then I get an error message, and I have to turn it back on again.
Problem with Avast turning off USB ports?
After weeks of stable computer use, I tried using Avast once again, but I noticed when I restarted, my USB mouse no longer worked. I moved it to another USB slot and it worked, so I didn't worry about it.
Then today, I noticed that the two front USB slots on my computer weren't reading anything. I remembered this problem started when I started using Avast, so I uninstalled Avast and presto, I regained usage of my USB ports upon reboot.
How to keep AVAST from turning off the ports? I couldn't see anything on google offhand. If not, I may just go back to Windows Defender.
I've upgraded to windows 8.1 a few days ago through a custom install as I was running windows 8 x86 and wanted to switch to x64. I've also just updated the BIOS.
After the upgrade though, my laptop goes into sleep/standby and locks the screen instead of turning off the display as I have it set. So, if I edit any power plan settings to turn off the display after 2 minutes, it will go to sleep after 2 minutes.
Just lately I have trouble with certain sites, like specifically Fox News Insider, not loading properly. The spinning dot wheel just keeps turning. I have Win 8.1 and use Firefox browser latest version.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI upgraded to Windows 8.1 and all has been great except one thing. When I leave the computer for about 10 minutes or so, the display turns off like it is supposed to. If I want to turn the display back on though, I find I'm unable to with the mouse, keyboard, or power button. It's like it is stuck in limbo and I have to restart the PC.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI got a new laptop, and pretty much immediately after initial set up I shut my laptop, the next time I tried to open it it showed the BSOD, it has the error,system_thread_exception_not_handled (iastora.sys). After it does the restart my computer runs fine. I followed the directions and included the file.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've installed Windows 8 on an xtreemer ultra media center. It's connected to a projector and a touch screen monitor in duplicate screen mode. Sometimes I would like to keep projector off and only use monitor.
Problem is when I turn off the projector. You hear the sound that windows detects a disconnected device. The image changes to a clean desktop (used to be lock screen, but I disabled that). And system becomes unresponsive. No cursor can be found. No metro interface. Microsoft+p is not displaying. Tried everything I can think of.

I've already tried checking any problem with components of my laptop with Dell software and after hours of tests it doesn't found anything wrong, so I hope this is something with software and not a compatibility problem of the new HDD with my laptop at all.
