Every since I updated to Windows 8.1 my seagate external hdd has been randomly turning off and coming back on when I start to use it or open a program again
View 9 RepliesI updated to Windows 8.1 a couple of days ago on my desktop. Windows 8 was installed last June. I have a Seagate Free Agent GoFlex external drive connected to the computer for daily backups. Since upgrading to 8.1, this drive has been shutting itself off and then restarting at seeming random times. This event is accompanied by a soft buzz apparently coming from the desktop tower.

What I would like to do is create 2 500Gb partitions and use my Acronis software to make mirror images of both my desktop and laptop. Is this do-able? Would it be advisable to delete the "Seagate Dashboard"?

Now I find restore points more useful, but I would have to turn the system protection on for an external hard drive. The problem is that I don't understand the sophisticated message Using system protection on a drive that contains system image backups will cause other shadow copies to be deleted faster than normal. Does it mean, that under some circumstances my manually created full system images could be deleted to create a restore point? I would like to keep the system images. Also, I hope it doesn't override existing directories on this harddrive, but I don't want to try it out without being sure.

Then I made it in one partition and converted it from dynamic and MBR to basic and GPT, then I stored files in it, the problem is, after I installed windows 8 over windows 7 -which is in a separate drive not the seagate. I faced the same problem in the image above, windows couldn't dedicate the hard drive because it's dynamic and MBR. It has my files now. I want to convert it to basic and GPT without losing data because they're very important.
I installed windows 8 in HDD 1tb Seagate. Then I bought Corsair 240 SSD drive and fresh installed everything there. Now if I boot from SSD drive my Seagate won't show up and I have tried other cables I have 5 hard drives in my system. It shows up in boot menu but won't show up in Disk management or anywhere else.
Then I connected it to the USP port and disk shows up no problem. I would like to leave this copy in as a backup so I don't want to delete it. I can boot into these windows but then my Corsair SSD drive won't show up. Whats up here.
That is, I can allocate it one through drive management but it still doesn't show next switch on in My Computer, so I must go in an allocate it one. Otherwise it works fine. Bit tedious after a while.
Do I have to reformat it completely to regain auto allocation of a letter?
Used to be fine, but not now. A USB 3.0 Toshiba 500 gig external drive (sealed unit) doesn't have this problem.
I have been having problems with keyboards on my new Windows 8.1 build. I have been able to replicate this using 2 different USB keyboards (Logitech G15 and Razer BlackWidow).
Every once in a while when I am typing, a key will get "stuck" and type out several times on the screen. So for example, if I was typing the word update, it might look like this.
At first I thought it was the keyboard, but since I have switched and just had it happen on the new keyboard.
I have switched USB ports on my mobo and that didnt seem to work. I am using the default Windows drivers as well for the keyboard.
So, I installed Windows 8.1 x64 from the Windows Store yesterday and now my QB-35US3 Hard-drives keep randomly disconnecting and connecting again. I had no problems before the upgrade. The bay is connected via USB 3.0.
I attached the SF Tool files.
I am running 8.1... recently my second seagate barracuda HDD has just been disapearing from explorer... this is my last resort, after this there is nothing... google is completely useless.. I have bought a brand new sata cable, so thats ruled out, the drive is NOT dead, it works perfectly fine and is 100% healthy. the motherboard is not fried, that was just replaced not more than a month ago. the UEFI BIOS is up to date... basically as i said my drive just disapears.. some days ill be able to see it and access files, the next it will not show up in any program at all... I have tried seatools, it does NOT show up in there... im just about ready to throw this damn drive out the window...
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've tried three mice, Logitech G400, Razer Deathadder 3.5 and a random Logitech wireless but the problem remains.
I haven't found any coincidents when i run a specific program or game. Sometimes it goes a day or two without incident and sometimes multiple times a day. I have run several Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Avast scans but they did not find anything.
I have also ran a "sfc /scannow" and the "DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth" to fix. I have tried the current drivers for every mouse, tried without drivers and tried to uninstall all drivers all let Windows install them itself.

I am working at a desktop pc with Win 8.1 installed. When typing, spaces appear randomly (also in the middle of a word - it is not as if the space key had got stuck). Nevertheless I got a new keyboard but the same problem occurs. I removed the keyboard driver - did not work. The keyboard is not wireless, plain USB. Seems though, as if the fault appears only in programs of the MS office suite.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have bought a HP envy 15 and upon using it a couple of times I turned it on again and Bluetooth had DISAPPEARED it was non existent in any settings or the Control Panel or anything except in Device Manager. After excessive clicking around I found that it had been turned off so I turned it back on.
I have used it for a while since until I turned it on today and found it to be again completely disappeared, I have tried everything within my knowledge to fix it and right now I have re-remembered how utterly worthless HP are at making hardware. I cannot find how to turn it back on again if it is the same error, but I do not think it is.
If I go into my device manager now (see image) it has the exclamation mark through it which means what exactly?? Clicking to update the driver does nothing, restarting does nothing, I can't see how uninstalling or disabling it will do anything.
I have a MacBook Pro running Windows 8 (via BootCamp) and I was running games on Steam.
Randomly, the game froze, and my Xbox 360 controller stopped responding. When I exited out to try and fix the problem, the trackpad stopped working completely and the whole thing froze.
Upon restart, the trackpad simply doesn't work (still doesn't) and I have to use a mouse to control it at all.
I reinstalled all of the BootCamp drivers, and it still doesn't work.
I have recently upgraded to windows 8. I was previously using a logitech mk320 mouse/keyboard and experiencing the same issues. So I purchased the new K330 setup that is windows 8 compatible, but again same issues. A little less frequently, but same issues.
Basically the keyboard will randomly have a 3 to 15 second delay when typing. To make it worse when it does finally pick up it leaves out letters making it very hard to type anything. Secondly the mouse will also randomly be very choppy. Not completely unresponsive, but skip over large sections of the screen. It's almost like the batteries are dying, but I have replace them 2 times now with fresh ones.
Been experiencing seemingly random BSOD's for the past few weeks, and completely unable to solve the problem myself. It happens from a minute or two after startup to after 3 or 4 hours or working, and sometimes doesn't crash on intensive apps like Furmark.
I'm running a Lenovo Y400 with the newest Nvidia drivers, and have attempted rolling back and uninstalling with DDU but no success.
I just bought my new PC, and i got a problem with it: My Logitech K350 Wireless Keyboard randomly stops responding or sending keystrokes to the PC, its likes it lags or disconnects randomly, its very weird. I installed latest drivers, did plug in/out the receiver from different ports to others with no luck.

I have purchased from a local electronics store, an after market HDD drive housing to enable me to use a surplus 450GB IDE hdd from a now defunct computer.
Once assembled I plugged it in ( it comes with its own power pack , and uses a USB cable to connect to the computer)
Windows 8 knows it is there and installed a driver called - USB to IDE bridge. there the problem starts
I am unable to see the drive in explorer or anything . either as a mass storage device or an external drive.
Do I have to register the drive or anything , and if so how - shouldnt Windows 8 do this automatically ?? I have another HDD ( more modern one ) and windows see's that straight away.

I have an external Lacie HDD which does not seem to function.When I plug it into a USB port I can see the HDD in the Computer Management snap in. I have formated it with exFAT. When I try to move something to the HDD it will start off right then will get to a certain %, after a while it will come up with a message saying that it cannot find the hdd.
I have monitored the activity of the flashing blue light & at the start of the transfer it would flash constantly, then slows down till eventually it will go off.What can I do to get the HDD to function right?
I am on an i7-12gb RAM+SSD Asus laptop, running Windows 8 x64. I am using two external HDDs attached via USB. One is an external-powered 2TB 3.5" WD, and the other is a 1TB 2.5" 5400 rpm Matshita HDD.
I store my music and movie collection in these drives, and a few setup files for the programs that I use.My problem is, from time to time when I boot up my computer, I start my browser, Word, iTunes, even Snipping Tool, etc. or when I need access to some function in a program (e.g. language proofing in Word, some function in Photoshop CS6, etc) my laptop randomly needs to access one, or both of my external drives and read something from there. I hear the whirring sound from the HDD and then my laptop starts responding again. This does not happen all the time, but it happens frequently enough to spoil a good workflow a few times during the day.
My external HDD's are slow in access times, and the 2TB WD actually shuts itself off after a non-use period and takes 6-7 seconds to turn back on.
So this translates into me randomly waiting for 6-7 seconds while using my laptop.
This case has been the same since using Windows 7 and through a few fresh installs.
I want these two HDD's to just store my files and not interfere with my OS' working.
Few days ago I bought a new Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E540. It has two USB3.0 ports and one USB2.0. I bought the machine without OS and installed Windows 8.1 Pro(x64) myself. Everything seems to be working fine except when I want to use My WD Elements 1TB external HDD in USB 3.0 port. It just doesn't get recognized. In USB 2.0 port it works fine.
What I've gathered and tried so far :
- Device manager does not show anything not even Unknown Device , yet my USB 3.0 Kingston pendrive works fine out of the box in the same slot
- I'm pretty sure the USB power is not the issue because the WD HDD , when plugged, starts blinking for a while , then lights up fulltime and i can feel and hear the drive spinning
- I've disabled USB selective suspend in my Power plan
- I've disabled Fast Startup
- In msconfig , im stuck at "Selective startup" (if changed it doesnt even let me APPLY and switches back to Selective right after I close/change tab in msconfig, I tried doing it in safe mode , same thing)
Using my harddrive in USB3.0 speed is essential for me.
So I have a WD external HD with all of my research data as well as some text books and other important things on there and for some reason I got an I/O error and after that the drive does not show on the computer anymore. The computer recognizes that there is a drive there and will read that it is a WD passport but cannot tell the size of the disk and will not register it as an external drive whose media I can explore and work with. What is wrong and how can I retrieve the data?

Seemed to work fine until Win 8.1 installed and now I get the 'Corrupted' message, although the Drive shows up in This PC. Driver appears okay and as far as I can see the USB 3 hub the Drive is connected to is working. Have tried in USB 2 but with same result.

When I go to 'Disk Management' in 'Computer Management', the hard drive shows up as Unknown - Not Initialised. Also this hard drive works while not using the USB hub, and the USB hub works as well with other devices.
