My Dell XPS 8700 runs 4 displays. How do I set up my Folder Options so that one particular folder will open up in a particular display everytime when I open it. Every time I open a new folder, it opens up in the display/area where the last folder is/was opened. I had no problem about this in Windows XP.
View 2 RepliesI have a friend who was deleting downloads and accidentally deleted her documents folder as well (Folder was stored on a external portable hard drive). She went to the recycle bin and clicked the file and chose restore, it showed all positive signs and removed it from the recycle bin, but there is no trace of where it went. It is not anywhere on the external hard drive (which was connected when she did the restore from recycle bin). I tried searching everywhere and there is no sign of it, where it went? We tried downloading a free data recovery program, but it is still scanning and will take another 4 hours.

Redirect a folder to a new location
I need the default my documents folder to be on a different drive, I know I can "add another location" for the library, but when programs automatically use "My Documents" they still go into the C: instead of being they would be directed to the D: because of the above procedure in the link.
I've had this error for some time wherein I would try to open my documents folder and I get this message every time: 'C:UsersMeDocuments is not accessible. The file name, directory name, and volume label syntax is incorrect.' I also noticed that nothing was inside the folder at all, as I've checked its properties.
However, it seems that all those original files in the documents folder along with the folder itself seemed to have been moved to a different directory, as I managed to open it from my desktop in the windows explorer. It only appears from there too, as I've checked my libraries and no documents folder existing as well.
The only time It did open was when I tried creating a shortcut of that inaccessible folder onto my desktop and opening it from there. It's bothering me because I can't seem to install anything properly without a message telling me that it can't access my documents files or that it can't find the directory, etc.
How to delete or disable that folder I accidentally created don't know how, because I want to change those folders to under D drive, how to change location folder to another drive.

Mainly I'm interested in setting one specific folder as default for every time I right click on an image and choose save as. I'm tired of having to browse through to my images folder each and every time. It didn't used to do this until I upgraded to windows 8.1. I don't really use "libraries" as there are only two folders I use for downloads. One is for images. The other is for everything else. I don't mind having to browse to my downloads folder, just not the images folder as that is generally what I download the most since I work with graphics a lot.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have Windows 8.1 fully updated, I need a folder and the files in it to be writeable, when I go to folder/properties the attributes/Read Only have a square dot in the box, when I take the dot out and apply, a short file is run then I close the folder and go to folder/properties again and the square dot in the box is there again.
I try to click on the box and change to a tick, apply then take the tick out and apply I still get the square dot in the box when I go to folder/properties.
It doesn't matter what I do the program I am installing want writable and will not install properly.
How do I make a folder and the files in it fully writable?
I want to make a folder (and anything inside of it) difficult to delete. Can I create a new owner for it so that I would have to take the steps to change that in order to delete it ? I'm not looking for anything fool-proof, just something to make it not so easy to accidentally delete. Also, is it possible to store the recovery image in a hidden partition. hidden in the sense, the drive letter is not automatically assigned when you refresh/reset Windows, nor can you do it from Disk Management. only from diskpart. however, if i can still use reset while keeping the recovery image in a hidden folder in C: drive, that is still fine i guess.
The thing is, the recovery partition of my Dell Latitude 10 tablet is destroyed (it's Dell's fault though) and even though i can easily recover Windows as I have an iso image and can use the USB to reinstall windows like we normally do on our desktops, i want to sell the tablet and i want to make it recoverable via the recovery features in Windows 8. without the ability to recover, the value of the tablet will be pretty low. if all else fails, i will have to buy a cheap USB flash drive, make it a recovery drive and give it with the tablet. sucks!
It is fine if i have to update to Windows 8.1, if it makes it possible in Windows 8.1 even though it was not in Windows 8.
Win 7 was easy to make all your folders show details view and not what windows thought you should view it as.
I can't find a way to do that in Win 8. I have googled it many times and all attempts have failed. I have changed several folders to details view only to have them revert back to what windows wants me to view them as.
I would like to do this for all my folders and libraries, which I understand may not work for libraries.
Is there a registry setting I can set to force all views to be detail view?
Is there a way to make Windows 8 remember what screen you closed a program on and open it in that window? Right now, I have most of the stuff I open pinned to the task bar. How it opens now is what ever monitor I click on the program in, it opens it in that monitor. I understand the logic on that, but I was wondering if there was a way to make programs always open on a specific monitor. I.e. I always have outlook on my monitor clear to the left, visual studio in the middle, and my browser on the right. Is there a way to force those programs to always open on that monitor, regardless of which task bar I click on?

I used Notepad++, and with it you can save the file as a wide variety of types, among them java file. I chose this, but since they are associated with eclipse, it makes opening them with Notepad++ tedious. I want to ask if there is a way to set the default program for some java files Notepad++ and leave Eclipse for the rest? This would be a useful feature for few other types too.

I'm trying to open my Music folder on my desktop or my whole D drive (with tons of items on it like game installations, music, pictures etc.) but the window that opens is empty and writes in it "This folder is empty". The address bar keeps loading and if I leave it loading (green bar filling), it stops right before the end and the window freezes. When I then click on the window a few times, the whole explorer.exe crashes and restarts, closing the window...
I can't acces the documents on my D drive. When I search for anything on the drive, it finds it and I can use it (pictures open, songs play). So the files are actually there but just aren't loading. I've made sure that the files are not hidden and I've already scanned for malware.
I have a PC with Windows 8.1 and a Mac with Mavericks. I have a folder on the Mac that is shared with the PC. When I'm on the PC and I try to open a file that is shared by the Mac, such as an ISO file (a disk image), then I get a message saying that I cannot open the file, or the file is in use (it depends on the app/filetype). I have the same problem when I open a video file. Strangely, text files and PDF files are just fine. And if I copy any of the problematic files to the local Windows disk, then I can open them just fine.
The specific error messages are:
- AVI files opened in VLC: "Your input can't be opened. VLC is unable to open the MRL."
- ISO files opened by Windows Explorer: "Sorry, there was a problem mounting the file."
This only started happening after I upgraded to Windows 8.1 on the PC and Mavericks on the Mac. Mavericks upgraded its SMB version from SMB1 to SMB2, so perhaps that is related?
I started using a second monitor recently, and ran into an issue when opening a folder. When I try to open any folder both screens will flash grey and then go back to normal, but the folder won't open. If I try again then the folder will open with no grey flash. If I switch back to just one screen, the same thing will happen, along with all of my icons being rearranged.

For instance, I open an email attachment and it automatically goes into full screen viewing. When I'm done looking at the attachment, how to go back to the previous email screen. Let's say I open picture and then several hours later go back and open another picture. The picture that I had opened several hours before flashes on the screen for a split second and then it opens the picture I currently want to look at.

I have to find the right session number in task manager. So I have to change the 0 to whatever session id I log in with.
Are there a shortcut that will always work without have to edit the shortcut every time? A symbol or something for the correct login number?
I already ran my norton antivirus, the spybot search and destroy software looking for malware but there was no thread. also i deleted some programs that i thought could be adding right click capabilities to my right click menu(as even if i right click on a folder,it freezes) but it still the same.
