Whenever I go to open my Explorer folder or if I haven't opened it in a while it is very slow to open. Takes maybe 5-10s to open up when normally it used to be instant.
This is the folder I am talking about if there are any confusion: View image: Explorer

I am using windows 8 and from time to time the whole laptop freezes with only short moments where you can move the mouse until it freezes again.
And today I was using word and the program wouldn't let me work in it, you could see the mouse movement at the bottom of the screen only. I had to shut it down using task manager for it to work again.

X230 Laptop, 8GB RAM, Intel Graphics 4000 series, SS180GB SSD. Problem occurs with laptop in the Ultra Base Series 3 dock or out of it. - VGA or DisplayPort. Laptop came with Windows 7, was upgraded to Windows 8 and then Windows 8.1 and then the 8.1 update. Problem started when Windows 8.1 was initially installed.
When connected to an external Monitor (HP ZR2240W or a Dell 2412Mb) with either display port or VGA (VGA on Dell only), Windows Explorer will stop working, open programs will show not responding. Mouse still functional, and if cursor is placed in the "taskbar" area, you will get a blue spinning circle. A double click of the mouse in that area will generally cause a relaunch of Windows Explorer (screen area goes blue, then repopulates with the icons) and things will work fine for a number of program launchs or switching between programs, then the problem will occur again. This will happen up to 20+ times per day.
Laptop has the latest BIOS installed from Lenovo, Intel Graphics Driver 10.18.10.3621. Have tried three different keyboard and mouse options (Microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse, Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse, and a hard wired keyboard and mouse) and problem follows each. Friday I reloaded Windows 8.1 with the most recent updates and problem continues.
Additional information - 65Watt Lenovo Power Supply. Laptop when not connected to external monitor (using just laptop screen) does not exhibit same problem
I feel that it might be a graphics adapter (Intel 4000) problem. Only solution there is a motherboard replacement.

I upgraded my Windows 7 to Windows 8 pro back in November. Windows explorer has always had issues but now I cant open windows explorer (any way) without it crashing and reload. In SAFE MODE it seems to work fine. I have tried disabling all the Services (non MS) and the Startup function but in normal mode but Windows Explorer still crashes.
I'm definitely not the only one experiencing this issue. A quick search online shows other people reporting their Windows 8 explorer frequently crashes. Is there a solution or something I should try to see if it can resolve the issue?

I recently bought a brandnew i7 samsung laptop.
But the problem is, the windows explorer is taking up 20% CPU all time even peaks to 25-30%. when i go to taskmanager and press end-task(windows explorer) the laptops stops making the loud fan-noises and also the CPU usage is back to normal
(i hope the language in the screenshots are no problem) common terms are: beschikbaar = avaible, geheugen = memory, snelheid = speed, in gebruik = usage,
SOLVED:
1) Open C:Windows/Temp
2) Delete all the data
3) Open task manager
4) Terminate explorer.exe
5) Start a new explorer.exe
6) Problem solved.

I have w.8.1 but I am unable to type letters as Windows live loses focus after about five key strokes.
Every open app loses focus after as short time, only way to get the focus back is to click the mouse in the app.
The cursor disappears and I cant type until I click on the mouse to regain the cursor..
Typing this request has taken a long time.
Have tried changing foreground time lockout to no avail.

I have Adobe Reader loaded on my Windows 8 system. If I have a PDF file saved to my local drives I can open it no problem. When I'm in Internet Explorer and click a PDF link, it starts to load then freezes. I have to use the Task Manager to end the process. I've tried both versions 10 and 11 of Adobe Reader but both freeze up.

When trying to save a document (could be from OpenOffice or LibreOffice or even a PDF), the Save As dialog opens and then immediately freezes. There is no way to escape--I have to "X" out of it and the document app crashes.
No new software has been installed since creating the new user account. We use Norton 360 and also Malware Bytes for protection.

It was very upsetting in case of Windows 7 the system explorer was unable to retrive folder size information. It was possible to preview file size in detail view but not folder size.
How is this feature in case of Winodws 8 explorer. Is the appropriate hook exposed in API or is it still missing as it was in case of Winodws 7?

When I right click in the downloads folder or try to open the Recycle Bin Explorer freezes and the blue circle appears unless I force quit the application. It only seems to happen in these two folders.
I downloaded Shell Extensions Manager and disabled all the applications not created by Microsoft and the problem still exists.
The one solution I did find was to create a new user and then the issue was resolved.

About since I installed jdownloader this afternoon (and afterwards removed "search protect" with AdwCleaner and Malwarebyte Anti-Malware), my Windows explorer regularly freezes.
It does so whenever I do a right-click on any folder or disk or on the free space inside a folder or disk. It also crashes whenever I open folder, which I have not recently opened or to which I added a big file (bigger than about 1 MB) recently. I could open some folders since this error came up but after adding a file to them, this is not possible anymore. Windows explorer being able to open some folders is probably due to it cashing/indexing some information. I can read everything using cmd (cd & dir) and execute files directly though.
In safe mode Windows explorer works fine.
What I did so far:
- Following this guide (Right-click is slow or weird behavior caused by context menu handlers) I removed all the handlers in the registry in HKCRAllFileSystemObjectsshellexcontextmenuhandlers, HKCRFoldershellexcontextmenuhandlers and HKCRDirectoryshellexcontextmenuhandlers. Deletion of one handle in HKCRDirectoryshellexcontextmenuhandlers called "WorkFolders" only produces an error. I therefore could not delete this one. It did not work. Afterwards I recovered the registry keys.
- I used system recovery to switch back to a state from the day before yesterday.
- I tried disabling all the files in auto-start using the task-manager with no improvement.
- I ran "sfc /scannow", which told me there were some files it was unable to repair. I digged into the log and found the file sfc talked about. The file was completely missing. I got a copy from my notebook and managed to copy that file into the folder. But it didn't work.
What's more, I could not rerun sfc to see if the sfc-error persisted, because my computer froze during login after the restart (during which I also installed some minor Windows updates) and I had to force a restart. This brought up a bluescreen on the first two following restarts. On the third one, recovery came up and I chose automatic repair. After that the system could start again, but "sfc /scannow" now throws an error saying "There is a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete. Restart ...". I tried running "dims.exe /image:C: /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions" in the recovery console, which threw an error saying that it was unable to complete. I also tried rerunning the startup repair, which told me it was unsuccessful. sfc is still not running.
Additionally, and I think this started at about the same time, Avira cannot start its real-time protection anymore. I don't get any useful information out of it, just that it encountered some error. I reinstalled it twice, to no avail.

Windows Explorer as well as other desktop programs failed to respond to a right click from any interface. I was also having printer errors that involved total failure to print. At first, I thought I needed to uninstall all my Epson software and printer, but that resulted in no change. This was likely a Context Menu Handler problem. It suggested downloading a Shell File Extensions View (ShellExView - Shell Extension Manager For Windows) from NirSoft version 1.8.6.0 which was free.
The first download I did not use out of fear so I accessed the Context Menu area via regedit, but saw no way to disable any suspected third party Context Menu Handlers. So, in the end, I swallowed hard and ran the NirSoft application. I was able to see all the shell items in the registry, and sorted them by age, the most recent was a Context Menu Handler from Norton Internet Security occurring during the most recent update.
The manager software allowed me to disable just that one handler, and after a restart, File Explorer and everything else behaved normally. So, now I am posting this so it only takes you less than an hour to address this issue, where I spent 4-5 hours on it. I reinstalled the Norton Internet Security and all is still well.

I have 8.1 with IE11 which will not run or open. In desktop mode the icon lights up for about 3 seconds, no window ever shows up and then the icon goes back to normal. In metro mode it spins and maximizes on the screen but then goes away before anything else happens. I've tried several things to get this fixed including...
netsh winsock reset at DOSremoving IE11 and adding back via Turning on or off Windows features in "Programs and Features"Removing any and all AV or Firewall software.Applying all Windows updatesResetting IE11 using its own reset button in "Internet Options"
Other browsers such as Chrome seem to work fine. I can ping by IP and name so I don't think its IP stack related.

I have Adobe Reader 11.06 installed. I can open a single pdf perfectly well from Explorer, but when I double click on a second pdf to open it, nothing happens (it doesn't open). This only happens when I already have one instance of Adobe Reader open - opening the first pdf works just fine. And if I close the first one, I can open the other file (I just can't open them simultaneously). Opening a second file from Adobe Reader's open file dialogue also works fine.
After some investigation, it seems that when I open multiple PDFs on my SSD (which Windows is installed to), it works perfectly. It only runs into issues when opening PDFs located on another hard drive, which is an issue for me because my Dropbox folder is hosted on a separate hard drive.
All you have to do is disable security measures in Adobe Reader XI (Edit -> Preferences -> Security (Enhanced) -> Sandbox Protection -> Enable Protected Mode at startup -> turn off).

The Navigation Pane on the left side of Windows Explorer has six major categories from top to bottom as follows: Favorites, SkyDrive, Home Group, This PC, Libraries and Network. When I open Windows Explorer, the cursor is positioned on the Library Category. I would prefer the default cursor position to be on Favorites. I assume that there is no easy way to make this change, at least without editing the Registry somewhere.

Here's what happened. Yesterday in the morning i was on my laptop (windows 8).
When suddenly, it started going really slow. I restarted it and every time i log into my account, i goes a bit slower, but not too much. Then whenever i open Google Chrome or Internet Explorer, the disk space goes straight up to 100% and doesn't go down. I went into safe mode and it didn't go slow then so it must be something else. I also downloaded AVG and scanned my computer but it found no threats. I have made a new account, which goes slow sometimes but is fine most of the time.

I've been loving the new Task Manager, it's better in every aspect except the time it takes to use. 1 minute is not acceptable for anything that isn't Skyrim, it takes so long that at first I assumed I hadn't pressed the keys correctly.
However it's much faster to open the second time, so I guess some process stays running after it's opened the first time. I wouldn't mind slowing down my startup a bit if it allowed me to have that process already running so when I open it the first time it takes a second.
Which process it might be and how I can set it to execute on startup? I'm not trying to open Task Manager on startup, just whatever makes it open faster.

... without closing/minimize the metro app? When I'm working with Photoshop I always have my email open because of the meeting notes. The problem I'm having now is that everytime I focus back on Photoshop, the mail app closes/minimizes by itself. The same thing goes with Skype
I know that you can open that tiny multitasking window on the side, but it's just not efficient. Is there a way to remedy this?

I am currently running Windows 8.1 (Pro), also I am up-to-date with Windows Updates. Sometimes, when I open File Explorer (a.k.a. Windows Explorer), like "This PC". It says "This folder is empty", it then starts some-kind of searching, also icons on the left are animated like "searching". There is another one, it also takes time to sort files/folders orders, for example when I am in C:New Folder and there are 5 folders and 5 files inside, none big sized at all. When I click on "Name" it then takes time to reorder the view.
Another thing is while I experienced these issues, I found another one that is. View>Layout sometimes gets disabled and I can't change the view. View>Options button behaves the same.

I recently switched from OE to WLM because I purchased a new laptop (Win 8.1). I incorrectly assumed, since OE is about 8 years old, WLM would be far more advanced in every aspect.
A huge annoyance is: whenever I need to find a folder in Storage Folders, instead of keying the first letter of the folder I seek, as with OE, I must scroll down to find it. To make matters worse; all of the Storage Folders are expanded to reveal the sub folders by default. So, as I scroll down, each time, I must manually collapse each expanded folder.
Any way to cause WLM Storage Folders to behave like OE.
