Nov 12, 2013I accidentally set the target location of the pictures folder to an entire drive. Is there any way to correct this?

Wrong Icons For All Pictures Under Windows 8?
Sep 17, 2013Up until a few days ago the icons for all jpeg, png and Gif files showed the images that were the pictures for each file. Now, for some reason, those icons have the same icon for each. They appear as a landscape of some sort. How to correct this. get the icons to show the contents of the individual files?

Oct 1, 2013I just got a Surface Pro with Windows 8. My first exposure to both. I am involved in genealogy so I download the app for Ancestry.com. My subscription is worldwide so when I click on the icon on my other computer with Windows 7 it takes me to the Ancestry.com webpage. But when I click on the APP on Windows 8 it takes me to Ancestry.ca (the Canada site) not .com. I checked my Region setting as per a post I found and made sure it is set to United States instead of Canada but that made no difference.

Nov 19, 2012I'm running Windows 8 pro 64bit on a self-build.
I was looking through the tabs of Autoruns and under the tab KnownDLLS it is showing that 3 DLL's loading via the Registry are not in the folders addressed - details are:
HKLMSystemCurrentControlSetControlSession ManagerKnownDlls
_Wow64 File not found: C:Windowssyswow64Wow64.dll
_Wow64cpu File not found: C:Windowssyswow64Wow64cpu.dll
_Wow64win File not found: C:Windowssyswow64Wow64win.dll
These DLL's can be found in C:windowssystem32.
I've looked at what Wow 64 does @ WoW64 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
why the Registry entries are pointing to the wrong folder?
Should I copy the Wow62 DLL's to C:Windowssyswow64 or change the Registry entries?

I need the default my documents folder to be on a different drive, I know I can "add another location" for the library, but when programs automatically use "My Documents" they still go into the C: instead of being they would be directed to the D: because of the above procedure in the link.

Jul 27, 2014I've had this error for some time wherein I would try to open my documents folder and I get this message every time: 'C:UsersMeDocuments is not accessible. The file name, directory name, and volume label syntax is incorrect.' I also noticed that nothing was inside the folder at all, as I've checked its properties.
However, it seems that all those original files in the documents folder along with the folder itself seemed to have been moved to a different directory, as I managed to open it from my desktop in the windows explorer. It only appears from there too, as I've checked my libraries and no documents folder existing as well.
The only time It did open was when I tried creating a shortcut of that inaccessible folder onto my desktop and opening it from there. It's bothering me because I can't seem to install anything properly without a message telling me that it can't access my documents files or that it can't find the directory, etc.

Whilst transferring all my picture files across from my old laptop I seem to have deleted the public pictures folder within my personal library. After a bid of searching around I have found the Public Pictures folder under the "public" area of the C: directory. It appears to only be missing only in my profile account (other profiles are also unaffected).
My question is how do I restore this folder? If I copy and paste the source public pictures folder I appear to be making a complete copy, rather than a shortcut type link to the files.

I decided to do this so that the pictures would stop showing up in that pictures app window, so that only I could access said pictures, and because I wanted to know how encryption worked. So far, the pictures continue to show up in my pictures app and nobody can access the file, and I now want to just move the pictures to an external drive. However, I can't find the file (it disappeared upon encryption) and so I can't decrypt it in order to move it. How do I find the file for decryption? (I have the key, just can't find the door, so to speak)

Jul 23, 2013I don't understand this at all. Why did they take away this VERY important function? You can no longer drag and drop pictures to and from dropbox to a folder on your computer! This is so aggravating that I feel like throwing my computer in the trash. I cannot use skydrive. It won't link to it and it won't let me transfer files to another location on my computer.
There is a "pictures" folder but it refuses to let me transfer files from skydrive or dropbox! This is extremely aggravating when trying to backup four years of vacation pictures. It also disables the drag and drop function from ANYTHING else: CDs, USB drives, hard drives. I'm so angry now that I might consider buying a used computer just to transfer the files.

Dec 4, 2013In setting up a new Acer Aspire V I have managed to rename the default Pictures folder Documents and I now have two folders called Documents - see below:
I was trying to move the Documents and Pictures folders to DropBox (because DropBox is encrypted) in order to have all contents synced. I believe the problem may have arisen because Windows 8.1 (I upgraded from installed Windows 8 immediately after buying the PC and before the install of Office 365) may have put the Documents folder in Skydrive folder by default.
To complicate matters Acer also has some form of cloud storage that may be in the mix -the clear.fi folder below? It is worth noting that the two folders below appear in both Documents folders (above) even although one still had the old Pictures icon - see above.

Jan 5, 2014how to set a particular folder as the default location for a specific file type, or, in the event that's not possible, just set it as the default location for all file types. Mainly I'm interested in setting one specific folder as default for every time I right click on an image and choose save as. I'm tired of having to browse through to my images folder each and every time. It didn't used to do this until I upgraded to windows 8.1. I don't really use "libraries" as there are only two folders I use for downloads. One is for images. The other is for everything else. I don't mind having to browse to my downloads folder, just not the images folder as that is generally what I download the most since I work with graphics a lot.

Dec 17, 2013Windows 8.1. I built a new computer yesterday, and installed Windows 8.1. I had previously run Windows 7 on my older computer.
Everything was working great, till today I decided to move my documents, pictures, music, and video folders to a different drive. I succeeded fine with documents, music, and video, however pictures seem to be a little messed up.

At the top, you will see it lists folders for music twice, both folders show my music files in them. I realize these are probably just pointers to the music folder, but now I have music twice, and pictures is not up there.
However, when I check to show libraries in the navigation pane, you will on the same screen shot, it does list documents, music, pictures, and video there as it should.
How I can get those folders back up at the top as they should be?
Apps / Software :: Import Pictures - Can't Select Folder
Feb 22, 2013I'm trying to import pictures from external device (in this case - android phone with PTP) and in the import dialog I've selected "import settings" and then I'm trying to change "Import images to" location, but when I click on Browse and select the same path I was using on windows 7 (on E: partition) I get error "You cannot import to this folder.
Choose another location" which, frankly, doesn't make much sense. I've tried permissions and so forth and I can easily browse and save picture there, I'm the owner and all that. Why Pictures Importer complains and doesn't allow me to use this location? I don't want to import to %profile%/Pictures because it's small-ish system drive :|
Cannot Get Into Documents And Pictures Folder - Library No Longer Working
Jan 17, 2013I can't get into my Documents folder. Every time I go to get into it, this little pop up message come up.
It tells me:
" "Documents.library-ms" is no longer working. This library can be safely deleted from your computer. Folders that have been included will not be affected."
I have also include an image of the message.
It also happens when I try to get into my Pictures folder. Just lays "Pictures.library-ms" etc etc etc comes up.

In message section-yellow triangle with exclamation point, followed by "Windows can't find the target".
What target?
Explorer is working, as I can open a folder, etc.
I tried SFC /scannow, and it reported no problems.
A Google search of the term found no hits.
Make Shortcut In File Explorer - Name Of Target Is Always Changing?
Aug 25, 2014I need to have a shortcut in file explorer go down a list of three targets and pick the first that works. Since I need this for about ten folders, it isn't really efficient to use separate shortcuts and just test which one is working at the time. The problem is that the name of the target is always changing and can sometimes take a month to go back to the original name. I could also use a way of giving the file another name [so one file with two names]. are any of these possible.
If not, is there another file manager I can use with these capabilities.

Oct 21, 2013Upto Windows 8 it was easy to change the folder that would open on clicking a Windows Explorer shortcut. All that was needed was to change the target in the Property Sheet to the desired folder.
In Windows 8.1 this is not possible. On opening the Shortcut Property Sheet the target Text Box contains "File Explorer" which is greyed out and can't be changed. My question is how to change the shortcut target in textbox from "File Explorer" to "My Documents" or the R: Drive as in my case?

May 19, 2014I was wanting to dual boot a Dell pc inspiron 600 with win 8. I thought I will breeze through it like I used to circa WXP/Vista/W7 and didn't research what changes there might be with Windows 8. I have focused my attention more on Android and I really should have done that research.
I hadn't backed up externally docs that I needed to save - so I will remove the drive and copy the contents to my laptop to be on the safer side. So the first wrong move has led to missteps.
I downloaded Easus and created a blank disk space before the current active partition instead of behind it. I thought I needed to have win 7 in the first partition. Before rebooting I also installed a popular freeware boot selection manager (I totally forget the name but I know some most will know the one I am referring to EDIT: ***EasyBCD*** ). It gave me a warning that no bootable system was selected. I kept editing to point it to current Windows 8 but nothing changed. It also warned me that my pc might not boot. I thought I will fix it to a bootable drive with my old discs-Ultimate boot cd, CPM, etc. Easus performed creation of the new partition and then trouble started. It refused to boot.
None of my discs are working as they did before Windows 8. on UBCD Fdisk cannot find any partition it can make active. I decided not to write an new MBR. My windows 7 install CD is giving me the "Windows cannot be installed to Disk 0 Partition X" details ->"The selected disk is of the GPT partition style."
Here are the partitions
My questions are: At this point I don't mind to have only windows 7 installed or if this situation is salvageable a dual boot then I don't have to remove the drive to copy the docs. I can just boot into 7 (which is what I mainly want to use) and just have access to Windows 8 partition from there to access my docs. I would prefer not to pull the drive out if I can avoid it but only if I know for sure what I am doing.
Second question : I believe partition 3: 489GB is the newly created one and Part 4 OS would be the Wind 8 partition. How can I know for sure that this is the wind 8 partition?
If I format the partition 3: 489GB will windows now allow for windows 7 to be installed?
Is there any way I can fix windows 8 partition to boot?
Lastly the basic question is how do I fix this error so that I Can install windows 7?
I don't have any pre-created OS discs of Windows 8. My current laptop is a toshiba win 7.
