I have a Windows 8.1 which I upgraded from my purchased W-8.
Decided to order the Windows 8.1 Media Center Pack. Ordered online and installed.
Got Windows Activation screen saying Windows can't activate right now. Try activating later. If that doesn't work, contact support.
The Current product key is the new one I just received.
Entering my old W-8 key doesn't work.

Up until a few days ago the icons for all jpeg, png and Gif files showed the images that were the pictures for each file. Now, for some reason, those icons have the same icon for each. They appear as a landscape of some sort. How to correct this. get the icons to show the contents of the individual files?

I haven't done a DOS copy command for quite some time. I'm wondering if I have forgotten something or is it different using Windows 8 which is my OS. Today I was trying to copy some files from the DOS prompt but got messages of either "wrong syntax", unable to "find file" or"could not find destination". Dose the command prompt work the same in Windows 8 as it always has or am I apparently doing something wrong?

I was wanting to dual boot a Dell pc inspiron 600 with win 8. I thought I will breeze through it like I used to circa WXP/Vista/W7 and didn't research what changes there might be with Windows 8. I have focused my attention more on Android and I really should have done that research.
I hadn't backed up externally docs that I needed to save - so I will remove the drive and copy the contents to my laptop to be on the safer side. So the first wrong move has led to missteps.
I downloaded Easus and created a blank disk space before the current active partition instead of behind it. I thought I needed to have win 7 in the first partition. Before rebooting I also installed a popular freeware boot selection manager (I totally forget the name but I know some most will know the one I am referring to EDIT: ***EasyBCD*** ). It gave me a warning that no bootable system was selected. I kept editing to point it to current Windows 8 but nothing changed. It also warned me that my pc might not boot. I thought I will fix it to a bootable drive with my old discs-Ultimate boot cd, CPM, etc. Easus performed creation of the new partition and then trouble started. It refused to boot.
None of my discs are working as they did before Windows 8. on UBCD Fdisk cannot find any partition it can make active. I decided not to write an new MBR. My windows 7 install CD is giving me the "Windows cannot be installed to Disk 0 Partition X" details ->"The selected disk is of the GPT partition style."
Here are the partitions
My questions are: At this point I don't mind to have only windows 7 installed or if this situation is salvageable a dual boot then I don't have to remove the drive to copy the docs. I can just boot into 7 (which is what I mainly want to use) and just have access to Windows 8 partition from there to access my docs. I would prefer not to pull the drive out if I can avoid it but only if I know for sure what I am doing.
Second question : I believe partition 3: 489GB is the newly created one and Part 4 OS would be the Wind 8 partition. How can I know for sure that this is the wind 8 partition?
If I format the partition 3: 489GB will windows now allow for windows 7 to be installed?
Is there any way I can fix windows 8 partition to boot?
Lastly the basic question is how do I fix this error so that I Can install windows 7?
I don't have any pre-created OS discs of Windows 8. My current laptop is a toshiba win 7.

I just got my hard drive back. I bought the computer in Sept. and the HD went. So it had to go to California. When I got the computer back the time was California time. I clicked on the time in the right hand corner and changed it to Eastern Standard time. It is still accurate in the right hand corner but people are saying my emails times are all wrong. They are receiving them before I've written them. And... to increase the mystery everyone's emails are coming to me with the wrong times. What could be wrong? Is it possible California time is still active somewhere else on the computer?
I'm using Outlook Mail. I went to my mail on roadrunner and the times are accurate so the problem is somewhere on my computer.

No matter how many times I go to 'View' settings, every time I choose a new window (i.e. opening a folder) I am always met with a small-format window rather than a full-screen, full-size one. I also am met with random lists instead of 'medium-sized icons', which I have opted for and chosen as default in 'view'. Have I missed a colossally simple tick in a box?

So I have both Windows 7 and 8 on my machine and am currently primarily using 8. I save all of my work and files to my 8 partition C: whenever I choose the location, but for applications/programs that automatically save to a library and where I can't choose the location, those programs always save it to my Windows 7 partition E:.
For example, using Windows key + PrtSc takes a screenshot of your screen and saves it to your pictures library. However, the picture gets saved to E:Users[username]Pictures instead of C:Users[username]Pictures. I guess it thinks my main library is still on the 7 partition instead of the 8 partition. The same things happens with games that I play where the save files are automatically saved in the My Games folder in My Documents. The save files are saved in the E: partition documents library instead of C: partition documents library.
Basically, I don't know where I'd go or what setting I'd change to fix this behavior. My default OS is set to Windows 8 in msconfig and all of my games are installed on my C drive, so I don't know why they would save to my E drive. Since the screenshot command uses the same behavior, I'm guessing there's a setting somewhere that's making my Windows 7 library the default.

I just got a Surface Pro with Windows 8. My first exposure to both. I am involved in genealogy so I download the app for Ancestry.com. My subscription is worldwide so when I click on the icon on my other computer with Windows 7 it takes me to the Ancestry.com webpage. But when I click on the APP on Windows 8 it takes me to Ancestry.ca (the Canada site) not .com. I checked my Region setting as per a post I found and made sure it is set to United States instead of Canada but that made no difference.

I seem to have some Audio files that whatever I do seem always to play in the order 1,10, 11...2,20,21... etc instead of 1,2,3,.. etc
I've got the file names in the correct sequence -- it only happens on a few albums bit it's mega annoying since if I'm playing an Audiobook in a Car I obviously want the tracks to be in the CORRECT sequence.
Here's an example of what a music app shows the order - and from MP3Vtag you can see the filenames are in the correct sequence.

after using Windows 7 Ultimate on my laptop for almost 2 years I decided to upgrade to Windows 8. The first day it was working fine,no problems at all. The other day I disconnected my USB mouse and it would keep on playing the disconnect sound, however, I solved that issue. Recently since yesterday whenever I would start my laptop and login, the windows start up sound won't play. It plays once I connect any one usb device to the laptop, but it will play the default usb connected sound with the latter devices. I ticked the 'play windows sound on start up' at the sound properties.

I'm running Windows 8 pro 64bit on a self-build.
I was looking through the tabs of Autoruns and under the tab KnownDLLS it is showing that 3 DLL's loading via the Registry are not in the folders addressed - details are:
HKLMSystemCurrentControlSetControlSession ManagerKnownDlls
_Wow64 File not found: C:Windowssyswow64Wow64.dll
_Wow64cpu File not found: C:Windowssyswow64Wow64cpu.dll
_Wow64win File not found: C:Windowssyswow64Wow64win.dll
These DLL's can be found in C:windowssystem32.
I've looked at what Wow 64 does @ WoW64 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
why the Registry entries are pointing to the wrong folder?
Should I copy the Wow62 DLL's to C:Windowssyswow64 or change the Registry entries?

for some reason, windows 8 starts going mad (100% disk and ram usage) when i copy, highlight, or open a ~5gig mpeg2 file (hdtv recording)
right click > view image (to see full image)
no, this is NOT a disk problem...
i copied these exact same files from windows 7 the exact same day i copied them back to windows 8..
also windows 8 started going mad if i read these files from my backup drive AND my normal drive .. it happened with TWO separate files not just one and on BOTH hard drives windows 8 started with the 100% disk usage crap..
i did manage to delete both files through the command prompt, but it sure did take looong time... i then recorded another 5+gig tv show file on windows 8, and windows 8 started going crazy again ..
now my freaking hard disk does not show a normal status on a smart check!!
i'm 100,000,000% sure this is a windows 8 problem since i'm back on windows 7 using big mpeg2 files with no problems... but my f'ing smart check isn't showing good status anymore
also windows 8 loads my wrong network driver !!!

Shortly after I pressed the Power button for the first time on my brand new Windows 8 laptop, I was brought to the screen where I set my time zone. I changed the default - Pacific Time - to my time zone - Eastern Time - and continued setting up my computer. Not long after, I realized that the time shown on my computer was wrong, and when I checked I discovered that the time zone had reverted to Pacific Time.
The problem is: I cannot change the time zone! (Yes, I am an Administrator.) Whether I do it from the Start Screen or the desktop, the time zone always reverts to Pacific Time. I even tried running tzutil from an elevated command prompt - the time zone will not change.
How can I change the time zone to Eastern Time? (I have plain Windows 8, not the Pro version.)

I am involved in prepping several Panasonic Toughpads for deployment in our environment w/ Windows 8.1 installed. While prepping, we are logging in with domain accounts that have some domain admin privileges for various setups on the local machine.
Upon completion of setup, logging in as the assigned domain user, which, on these systems, will be a local admin. However, after a few seconds, where the account name is displayed on the top right corner of the start menu, it shows the logged in domain username--as it should--then quickly changes to show the previously logged in domain admin user's name.
This is phenomenon is occurring for myself and two of my coworkers who are using isolated domain admin logins assigned to them.
Troubleshooting that has already happened: restarted the system, deleted the domain admin's user folder and associated registry key in the ProfileList to no avail. Logged in as yet a different user, and back to the assigned user's account but still showing my domain admin name in the account name. Is this getting circular yet?

Windows detects my Ricoh AC104 on a wireless network but insists it's an HP 5Si MX and installs that driver. When it adds the printer, it loads the driver automatically and without choice or prompt. Perhaps the misidentification has something to do with the printer driver in between (Hawking HMPS1U). I need to force it to use the printer driver from Ricoh, but I've had no luck so far. Some things I've tried:
1. There's an installation program with the Ricoh driver, but it doesn't see the printer on a wireless network.
2. Going to the advanced options for the printer on the device manager, I can see the driver info but Windows will not permit changes. I tried as Administrator also. No difference.
3. Attempting to update the driver just leads to Windows telling me the (wrong) driver is up to date.

I just received my Inspiron 15z with 32GB mSATA and 500GB HDD, and I was disappointed to find that Windows 8 is installed on the 500GB (presumably 5400 RPM) HDD. For performance sake, I expected that the OS would be installed on the mSATA drive.
I'm not sure the best way to fix this with the Recovery Media, as I've never done this before. I don't want to run into Windows activation issues, but I want to do a clean installation using the mSATA drive as my OS drive.
I don't really care about the recovery partition, since it's apparently configured incorrectly (in my opinion). I just want the OS on the mSATA drive.

Sometimes when I start up my PC, my internet won't work because the wrong driver is being loaded.
This is the driver that sometimes loads up 82579LM"
Then when I do a "scan for hardware change", it'll load up the correct driver and my internet will start working 82579V:
This happens with the default driver that Windows 8 installs and the one from Intel's website as well:

I recently installed a HD (WD25EZRX). it's been operating normally for about 2 days.
i was using my comp when i saw an alert that said something about a hard drive error and that my PC needed to be reset to fix it. so i reset the PC and saw another message saying something about restoring to a previous point. i wasn't really thinking and i clicked OK.
upon reset, i noticed the HD in question was now showing up as 1.36TB (it's a 2.5TB HD). it also has a bunch of files from another HD, which is odd.
i've used Error Checking under Tools of the HD's Properties, but the results showed no errors.
i'd like to regain the "lost" capacity w/o having to reformat my entire HD.
System Specs:
Win 8 Pro with Media Center
Intel Core i7-3770K CPU
Samsung 30nm DDR3 1600 RAM 16GB
ASROCK Extreme4 Z77 Motherboard
ATI Radeon HD4650

Strange problem I am having with my windows 8.
I have an ASUS laptop running 8.0 which I am running with a second screen (dell monitor) connected via VGA. I have it set so the external monitor is the primary screen and the laptop is the secondary screen. It is set for a taskbar on each display, with the primary taskbar containing the shortcuts on the monitor, so when I click them they open there. It's been working fine for months.
So I switched it on today and my taskbar shortcuts have jumped to the taskbar on the second (laptop) screen, however my external display is still set as the primary and still has my desktop icons, trashcan etc but a blank taskbar (like the one that used to be on the secondary display)! When I click the shortcuts which are now on the taskbar of the laptop screen they open on the monitor. (ie the wrong screen) I disconnected the monitor, turned off the extended desktop and set it to just use the laptop screen. All my desktop icons moved to the laptop screen but the taskbar shortcuts vanished and I was left with a blank taskbar. If I plug the monitor in again and extend the desktop they reappear, but on the wrong screen. Even if I reboot without the external screen connected I get no shortcuts until I plug in the monitor and set it to extend the desktop. I have checked all the taskbar settings and they are all correct.

My Windows cannot be activated. I have tried several different methods of activation but none seem to work. My computer was Windows 8 pre-installed before purchase. Because of this I literally have no product key. I have checked my email and searched for anything that seems Windows related just to make sure of a product key to be found.
Eventually I came across a program that told me my product key. After I found my key, I then tried multiple methods of activation and nothing seemed to have worked. I am running Windows 8 on a 64-bit system. This problem started on the 28th of June and I found out that this could be a hacker attacking my key (using a key-gen and my key being used on another computer) how can I solve this!? any method I will try!

Part of my job is to prepare new laptops for end users that comes from OEMs. Since the included windows installation on most laptops is loaded with "bloatwares" we used to deploy a fresh Win7 Image in WDS and activate using OEM slic which made them completely legal. That was in the Windows 7 days.
Now I'm trying to do about the same thing with Windows 8 however since there is no SLIC it gets a little bit trickier.
Here is what we are doing right now:
-pull the hard drive from the laptop
-make a backup of 'Store' folder
-Reinstall hard drive, deploy Image or Clone from same model.
-pull the hard drive again
-overwrite content of Store folder with the old one
-Change folder permissions
-put the hard disk back in the laptop, let it boot.
-Windows complain about an activation error, reboot or CMD>slmgr -dli.
-activated again.
The hardest part in fact is to take note of which Store folder goes with which laptop.
