Updates :: Windows 8.1 And WMC Activation?
Jul 15, 2013
When I first installed Windows 8 I got 2 free WMC keys. I used one on my Windows 8 system and never used the 2nd one. I have installed 8.1 preview using the ISO and Hyper-V. Today I used "Add features to Windows 8" using the unused WMC key to install WMC on my 8.1 virtual system and it worked great.

I bought a laptop last July it had Windows 8 preinstalled, I had it for about a month and the screen went black on it so i sent it to a guy in my town and he fixed it but ever since it kept telling me to activate Windows 8, but it wont activate when i put in the serial code it says "Error: 0x8007007B The filename, directory name or volume label syntax is incorrect"
I've tried to fix it and i'd get it to go away for a while and it'd pop up again but since the other day whenever i turn it on it goes to this blue screen asking me to activate it and after a while on it the blue screen pops up again but it still wont activate it says "Windows can't activate at the moment"

I had Windows 8 Pro with Media Center installed on my Asus K55A laptop and it was 'activated'....no problems! So I decided to install the 8.1 Preview via the Windows Store...installation went fine. However when exploring, I noticed that it was not activated: So I entered in the the product key for my Windows 8 pro information....even purchased a Windows 8 Pro media DVD....have a copy of the email with the purchase price..So I enter in the Product Key that worked successfully with Windows 8 Pro: Received this nice message..
Error Code: 0xC004C003
Error Description: The Activation server determined the specified product key has been blocked
A note that also stated, You need to enter in the product key on the back of Windows 8 box, or the product key that came in the email that you received when you purchased the DVD....I have a copy of the email that I received with the purchased Windows 8 DVD.....there is NO product key listed at all!Now I can not even attempt to customize Windows 8.1 preview, because it is not activated.....
I am quite frustrated to say the least, and even attempted to install (clean) back to Windows 8 Pro with my purchased DVD....when I entered the same product key that was successful (only 3-4 days) ago....the installation process stalled!
So I stuck in a Windows 7 disc.....and at least the system rebooted back into Windows 8.1 Preview....but still no dam activation...I guess my only alternative is to contact Microsoft support... my Windows 8 Pro with Media Center was running beautifully and was fully activated only 2 hrs ago...

I had Windows 8 Professional edition from ASDF India (Association of Software Developers & Faculties). They had provided a KMS Activated version, which after installation, activated Windows 8 automatically. Also to mention that it is a genuine copy, as I had a special password which was provided by them to log in and download windows 8. However, I was not provided any extra Keys.
After running smoothly for 8 months, today out-of-the-blue a message pops up saying Windows 8 is not activated. The error shows as follows :
Error : 0x8007232B
Description : DNS Name does not exist.
I tried to follow the steps mentioned in this Microsoft Article Error 0x8007232b or 0x8007007B occurs when you try to activate Windows, but could not solve the error.

I have installed Windows 8.1 Update 1 Pro Version a few weeks back on my desktop computer running 64 bit version of the OS. The OS was running perfectly fine until today when it started showing activation error. This is not right since I had installed Windows 8.1 Update 1 with a legit key since I have an MSDN subscription As you can see in below pic. It says that you can activate the Windows Machine now
Now I went ahead and tried to activate the windows by the key which I had intially activated and also with a new fresh different key which I haven't any activated windows machine yet. Both the steps didn't yield any fruitful results
1) When I hit "Activate" button
2) When I click "Error Details"
3) When I click "See Support info online" - Nothing happens
I have tried below troubleshooting steps but nothing happened yet
Run sfc/scannow command. This failed at 42%Tried to scan registry and fix the registry by using Advanced System Care 7.2 Pro EditionRefresh the PC. PC was unable to refresh. I had inserted my OS USB DriveTried System Restore to yesterday state. System Restore too failedUninstalled Windows Updates that were installed yesterday.

I bought a lenovo y410p with windows 8 preinstalled. I upgraded it to windows 8.1 using a generic key. Now if I look into my windows 8 key it will show me the generic key I used (using Belarc Advisor).
If I activate it online, the Error code: 0x8007007B comes out...

I called microsoft activation center and the only suggestion they have is clean install of windows 8 and redo the upgrade because the media center activation key was expired (after the promotion period). It wasted me an hour to make the call and talk with the manger (employee id 2814). They sound like it is none of their business.

I have a Windows 8.1 which I upgraded from my purchased W-8.
Decided to order the Windows 8.1 Media Center Pack. Ordered online and installed.
Got Windows Activation screen saying Windows can't activate right now. Try activating later. If that doesn't work, contact support.
The Current product key is the new one I just received.
Entering my old W-8 key doesn't work.

I bought an asus laptop yesterday, this laptop came with windows 8 preloaded and in theory pre activated. What I did when i got home was turn my computer on, select a lenguage, add my email address, add my home network connection and create a profile. I dont want to need to type my email address everytime i turn this thing on so the profile i created has no password. When adding said profile i noticed that my windows 8 copy was not activated because i also wanted to change my profile pic and it would not allow me to do so, so i go investigate and the message i get is "Activation error description not found" and bellow that is a button that says "activate" and bellow that button there is a link to windows customer service. When i click the button that says "activate" i see a small rotating circle and the words "checking key" and then nothing else.
I tried to do a system restore with no luck.
I tried to reset my system but i need to have a recovery media cd inside or a windows installation disk that i dont have since it came pre-installed.
I tried to remove everything and re-install windows, i also cant do tha because of the previous reasons.
So i try to get a recovery copy(looked for recovery in system and opened the one that just said recovery) on some cds or dvds, but when i try to it wont let me because i am missing some files and its just not possible.

After a BSOD and utter failure to boot (presumably a critical OS file damaged) I ran the recovery tools for a total factory reset.
Connected to the internet and worked for an hour or two, then tried a reboot. Windows update had 104 updates to process. It did them, then "Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer"
This should take half an hour. After 90 minutes it has rebooted 5 or 6 times. It keeps reverting to the same "Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer" message. Looks like it might want to reboot through each of those 104 updates.
I'm going to repeat the factory reset and the FIRST thing I will do is disable updates. I'm going to see how long I can work without any updates.

I was reviewing my windows updates and saw two optional updates that were pending. First one was for MS office and it went through fine. Second one was some update to AMD vision control center. During that update screen flashed couple of times and went for re-start. After that I am unable to get into the system. I tried safe mode/debugging/low resolution mode etc.. But all resulted in the same blue screen with the 0xc000021a error message.
I am able to go only to command prompt. Nothing else (fortunately I am able to backup my photos by connecting external hard drive and using command prompt). I checked the SRT log file but it doesn't say any issue. All passed.
I tried refresh PC but it came back and said "There was a problem refreshing your PC. No changes made".
I tried using win ISO image bootable flash drive. It couldn't get through me in (I just tried with PC repair option when I booted with ISO image).
Is there a way I can get over it without re-installing?

I am currently having an issue on my laptop at the moment where it's stuck in an infinite loop of 'reverting changes' after having tried to update and failed at 30%, I have done some reading at ways to boot into safe mode however it would appear windows 8 doesn't give me the chance.
I do not have a copy of my original windows 8 disc and am at a loss!
I have tried spamming F4, F8, F10 buttons and none are allowing me to enter boot mode.

So some background. I had issues with being able to install ANYTHING from an MSI file. Then I wasn't able to install any updates from Windows Update. I then reinstalled Windows, and am now facing the same issue after a few days. I would rather not reinstall yet again.
I tried doing System Restore, but it just hangs. Windows Installer hangs on "preparing to install".

I just bought new Asus Vivotab Smart Windows 8 tablet, after the very first windows update it failed to install some of the updates, and then after the reboot I am now stuck with the message "Failure configuring Windows updates, reverting changes".
It never gets any further than this, it never reverts, I have left it running for an entire day and have restarted several times.
This is a tablet, so there is no keyboard so I cannot press any F keys to get into recovery mode, and no CD to boot from etc.

My Windows cannot be activated. I have tried several different methods of activation but none seem to work. My computer was Windows 8 pre-installed before purchase. Because of this I literally have no product key. I have checked my email and searched for anything that seems Windows related just to make sure of a product key to be found.
Eventually I came across a program that told me my product key. After I found my key, I then tried multiple methods of activation and nothing seemed to have worked. I am running Windows 8 on a 64-bit system. This problem started on the 28th of June and I found out that this could be a hacker attacking my key (using a key-gen and my key being used on another computer) how can I solve this!? any method I will try!

i was reading about how Windows 8 must be activated using a KMS server of some kind, i was wondering is it possible to activate Windows 8 without internet or use infinite trial to avoid connecting to the internet?
Could i create a KMS server hosted on my LAN so i dont have to rely on the internet to activate Windows 8? Is there any method to activate Windows 8 offline?

I had to reinstall windows 8 due to it not booting and being sluggish once its booted.
I followed instruction on the restoration of keys using JaguarXJ12 method.
After following it, I could not get it to activate as my store folder was backup with WMC.
I was wondering how can I install back WMC to the current Windows 8 I'm using.
My Windows 8 Pro + WMC is activated during the early days with the WMC key glitch that fully upgrade it into windows 8 pro + WMC.

I don't see any option to hide the updates which you don't want to install. In windows 7, one can simply right click and choose hide the update, but no such thing in windows 8.1.
