Files Get Saved In The Wrong Library When Dual Booting

Jan 9, 2013

So I have both Windows 7 and 8 on my machine and am currently primarily using 8. I save all of my work and files to my 8 partition C: whenever I choose the location, but for applications/programs that automatically save to a library and where I can't choose the location, those programs always save it to my Windows 7 partition E:.

For example, using Windows key + PrtSc takes a screenshot of your screen and saves it to your pictures library. However, the picture gets saved to E:Users[username]Pictures instead of C:Users[username]Pictures. I guess it thinks my main library is still on the 7 partition instead of the 8 partition. The same things happens with games that I play where the save files are automatically saved in the My Games folder in My Documents. The save files are saved in the E: partition documents library instead of C: partition documents library.

Basically, I don't know where I'd go or what setting I'd change to fix this behavior. My default OS is set to Windows 8 in msconfig and all of my games are installed on my C drive, so I don't know why they would save to my E drive. Since the screenshot command uses the same behavior, I'm guessing there's a setting somewhere that's making my Windows 7 library the default.

Dell PC Inspiron 600 - Win 8 / 7 Dual Boot Gone Wrong

May 19, 2014

I was wanting to dual boot a Dell pc inspiron 600 with win 8. I thought I will breeze through it like I used to circa WXP/Vista/W7 and didn't research what changes there might be with Windows 8. I have focused my attention more on Android and I really should have done that research.

I hadn't backed up externally docs that I needed to save - so I will remove the drive and copy the contents to my laptop to be on the safer side. So the first wrong move has led to missteps.

I downloaded Easus and created a blank disk space before the current active partition instead of behind it. I thought I needed to have win 7 in the first partition. Before rebooting I also installed a popular freeware boot selection manager (I totally forget the name but I know some most will know the one I am referring to EDIT: ***EasyBCD*** ). It gave me a warning that no bootable system was selected. I kept editing to point it to current Windows 8 but nothing changed. It also warned me that my pc might not boot. I thought I will fix it to a bootable drive with my old discs-Ultimate boot cd, CPM, etc. Easus performed creation of the new partition and then trouble started. It refused to boot.

None of my discs are working as they did before Windows 8. on UBCD Fdisk cannot find any partition it can make active. I decided not to write an new MBR. My windows 7 install CD is giving me the "Windows cannot be installed to Disk 0 Partition X" details ->"The selected disk is of the GPT partition style."

Here are the partitions

My questions are: At this point I don't mind to have only windows 7 installed or if this situation is salvageable a dual boot then I don't have to remove the drive to copy the docs. I can just boot into 7 (which is what I mainly want to use) and just have access to Windows 8 partition from there to access my docs. I would prefer not to pull the drive out if I can avoid it but only if I know for sure what I am doing.

Second question : I believe partition 3: 489GB is the newly created one and Part 4 OS would be the Wind 8 partition. How can I know for sure that this is the wind 8 partition?

If I format the partition 3: 489GB will windows now allow for windows 7 to be installed?

Is there any way I can fix windows 8 partition to boot?

Lastly the basic question is how do I fix this error so that I Can install windows 7?

I don't have any pre-created OS discs of Windows 8. My current laptop is a toshiba win 7.

Windows 8 Adds DAT Extension To All Saved Files?

I bought a Asus ROG with Windows 8 pre installed. I was making a logo with pixlr and saving it to my desktop when I noticed the only save option was "data file". So I saved it. I cant open it or naturally upload it to my website like I could with seven. Why is it saving with the additional suffix .dat example - logo.png.dat or logo.jpg.dat? Saving it to my desktop and trying to open it suggests I look for apps to open it...really!

Applying Store 8.1 Update Using Locally Saved Files

Nov 7, 2013

Bought a new Acer all-in-one and immediately upgraded it to 8.1 via a 3GB DL. Went perfectly.

Cleverly (I thought) I saved the update files should I ever need to do the update again.

Then the Acer had a hardware problem so I returned it to Best Buy for a replacement.

Now, I try to apply the 8.1 upgrade files that I previously saved from the store DL to the replaced computer.

It asks for a key, but won't accept either the one from the new replaced machine, nor the one that I returned.

Are these licenses now tied to an individual computer, via a unique code embedded in the BIOS or some such??

I really don't want to do the DL again, since my bandwidth is metered and 3GB takes a good percentage of my total monthly quota.

Dual Booting In WIN 8

Mar 22, 2013

Just installed Win 8 on a new hard drive. "Almost" everything works fine. However my scanner, colorimeter and a couple programs are not compatible. I do not need to use the incompatible hardware/software very often. But when I do, I would like to boot the computer into XP and use them. I've done some research on this topic. Partitioning the Win 8 primary drive does not appear to be an issue. But, can I dual boot 2 operating systems if Win 8 is now the primary and only OS on the HD?

Setup Installation :: Dual Booting Win 8.1 X64 And Win XP?

Aug 6, 2014

attempting to setup a dual boot with Win 8.1 and Win XP.

Just a quick break down of my current setup:

a) Win 8.1 x64 is currently installed on my SSD on C: drive partition b) On a different SATA hdd I have an old Win 7 x64 installation that I'm not using any more on one partition

I simply want to replace my old Win 7 x64 installation with Win XP. Why do I want to install Win XP you may ask ? The answer is simple, I want to play some older games that aren't fully compatible with Win 8.1 x64 and neither run good in a virtual machine environment on Win 8.1.

The only thing that is stopping me from attempting this is, has to do with the Win 8.1 bootloader. I simply don't want to lose my bootloader, and I'm afraid that when I install Win XP it might overwrite my Win 8.1 bootloader which will most likely leave me without gaining access to Win 8.1. At the moment the Win 8.1 bootloader lists along with Win 8.1 my old Win 7 x64 installation.

Given my setup of hdd's up top, what would be the easiest way for me to load Win XP on my old Win 7 partition that will still allow me to have the Win 8.1 bootloader with a Win XP boot option on the bootloader menu ?

Should I disconnect my SSD and then proceed to install Win XP on the Win 7 partition and then afterward reconnect my SSD and then using EasyBCD add an entry for Win XP to the bootloader? Or will I run into an issue along the way?

Pin Actual Saved Files To Start Menu Like Word Documents And Excel Spreadsheets

Nov 27, 2012

Is It possible to pin actual saved files to the Start Menu like Word documents and Excel spreadsheets (or anything else for that matter) as well as programs. I use this on my Windows 8 at work.

For example my Microsoft Excel file shortcut will be like follows:

Target: "C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficeOffice15EXCEL.EXE" "D:UsersUser NameYour File Name.xlsx"
Start in: "C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficeOffice15"

I usually set the Start In to the MS Office Folder or the File location folder, it doesn't seem to affect it either way. I created a folder in my username called Shortcuts and put all of them in there. Because Windows sees this as an executable program it will allow you to right click it and to pin it to the Start Menu even though it actually starts the saved file you need. I use this for my Access database files too. As long as you set the correct path to the file name, it works every time. You can name the shortcut whatever name you need as well.

Anyway, I thought I'd share it since it makes a great time saver being able to launch your most frequently used files straight from the Start Menu in Windows 8 rather than having to launch the program and then trying to open the saved file.

Maintenance :: Unused Partitions Take Lot Of Space And Dual Booting

May 21, 2013

So recently i bought a refurbished/used Samsung ultrabook (NP540U3C-A01UB )

One of the features is that is has : (500GB with 24GB ExpressCache - Technology)
Which I don really understand.

I've also noticed that the system has a lot of partitions that are taking space and are largely unused. I've had the computer for about a month and i use it everyday almost and so far a lot of the partitions havent been used.

I don't see a reason why to have those.

So can i Erase them??

Please notice 2 disks. I know the larger one is used for C: and the other for the ExpressCache???

Also notice that disk1 is empty. Pretty much all of them are, with the exception of 2 (C: and the partition right of it)

What is it used for?? How can i find out?? Whoever installed this system made a mess.

Here is a second part of my question:

For work reasons I have to have a Ubuntu machine and I thought I could just dualboot and use the partitions that are unused. Which is why i care about the unused space.

I have used virtualbox in the past but it was really slow. I need a responsive system and virtualization is no longer an option.

So my question would be how can i accomplish the dualbooting?? Specially taken that i have UEFI/random partitions in my system.

I know there are a lot of tutorials out there but none come close to my drive mapping/situation.

Just don't wanna destroy my system while trying to get the dualboot working.

Setup Installation :: DUAL BOOT With Ubuntu 12.10 - Windows 8 Not Booting

Sep 13, 2013

I have a big problem since 9/9 and I just can`t fix it.

I have a dual boot system and use Windows 8 as my main OS and on the other ssd I have ubuntu 12.10 installed.

My issue started because I completely forgot that I had ubuntu installed on the other ssd (didn`t use it anyway) and tried to raid the ssd...so now I can`t boot anything and I do need to restore my Windows 8.

I have a usb recovery disk which allows me to use cmd but I don`t know how to use to recover my Windows 8 so that`s why I am here.

I ran diskpart on cmd it it shows both disks and both are ONLINE.

Ran chkdsk /f but i keep getting an error and chkdsk does not run

I have asus P8Z77-V LX UEFI Mobo
Intel rapid Smart technology (RST), Intel Smart Connect Technoly is disabled.
CSM is ENABLED ( it was AUTO) and boot device control to UEFI and LEGACY OpROM.

Secure Boot is disabled and I changed the OS type to OTHER OS and also tried WINDOWS UEFI MODE. The setup mode is EZ MODE.

Hard Drive Restore Error - Shows Wrong Capacity / Extra Files Added

Feb 2, 2013

I recently installed a HD (WD25EZRX). it's been operating normally for about 2 days.

i was using my comp when i saw an alert that said something about a hard drive error and that my PC needed to be reset to fix it. so i reset the PC and saw another message saying something about restoring to a previous point. i wasn't really thinking and i clicked OK.

upon reset, i noticed the HD in question was now showing up as 1.36TB (it's a 2.5TB HD). it also has a bunch of files from another HD, which is odd.

i've used Error Checking under Tools of the HD's Properties, but the results showed no errors.

i'd like to regain the "lost" capacity w/o having to reformat my entire HD.

I have tried booting into recovery and doing automatic repair, tried bootrec's /fixboot, /fixmbr, and /rebuildbcd and and get successfully completed but still does not boot in both secure and non-secure boot. I have done a refresh, which completes successfully, but still not booting. The USERS folder in c:Windows.old does not show any users, even though when I click advanced options in recovery it asks to choose a login and enter a password. I have also checked the USERS folder at c: and :cwindows. Remember I did a refresh and not a reset so my pics should still be their. How can i recover my pics and fix the damn boot.

Windows 8 Fails To Boot After Booting Into Windows 7 - Dual Boot

Sep 15, 2014

I have a Dell Inspiron 17, 5000 Series (1.7 GHz Intel Pentium 3558U, 4 GB Ram, 500 GB HDD). It came preloaded with Windows 8.1. I needed Windows 7 so I partitioned the main drive and installed Windows 7 in 100 GB of partitioned space. After swapping between the Windows 7 and 8 Boot manager. Ended up choosing the Windows 8 manager.

My problem comes in when I boot into Windows 7, then when I shut down and try and boot into Windows 8 it will hang prior to the boot manager (of Windows 8). I have to press and hold the power button to hard shut down. Once I do that and reboot, Windows 8 Boot manager and Windows 8 boot ok.

So Windows 8 will boot fine if I was last in Windows 8. However if I was last booted in Windows 7 then go to Windows 8 (or try and boot into 7 again, but using the 8 boot manager) it will hang at boot. I've used all the command checks with Windows 7 and 8. Found no errors. I can't reinstall Windows 8 as I don't have recovery disks, plus the computer came from Aarons Rent to Own (they had no issues me doing what I wish with it).

When I switch and use the Windows 7 boot manager I can boot back into Windows 7 even if Windows 7 was my last boot. But like when using the Windows 8 boot manager, I am unable to boot into Windows 8 if Windows 7 was booted last. But Can boot to Windows 8 if Windows 8 was booted last.
