I'm running 8.1 on an HP desktop, with IE version 11.0.2.
Some time in the past week or so, the bar at the bottom of the page when I am in a browser session, launched from the desktop, no longer appears. It's the one that usually shows the Connection, Safe to Eject, my Norton status, Volume icons, date/time, etc. I use automatic Windows updates, so I'm kind of assuming it was something there that did it...but don't know for sure.
All I want to know is How Do I Get It Back? I especially need that volume control icon, so I can mute all the ads when I open a news video on Yahoo, Bing, or MSN.
This bar shows just fine when I'm looking at the Desktop screen, just not in the browsers.
The icons on the taskbar at the bottom of my screen become distorted. They'll generate copies of themselves, overlap other icons, and the start menu button disappears. Whenever I try to click an icon, it opens the icon to its left, as if the mouse needs to be calibrated. When I open the start menu, every time I scroll my mouse across a shortcut, it disappears. Poof. Just like that. I scroll my mouse over the icons a few more times, and usually, they'll come back, but if I scroll again, they disappear once more. Thus, I'm not able to open any programs from the start menu. Additionally, my background (which I normally have cycling through a folder of wallpapers) goes completely black.
This happens without warning; sometimes I'm playing video games and it happens when I alt-tab, sometimes I'm browsing the internet and it happens randomly, once I was just looking at my screen without running any programs or tasks and it happened. It will fix itself anywhere from a span of 2 minutes to half an hour.
The taskbar at the bottom of my screen is unresponsive for the last week, despite the fact that I've shut down and restarted my pc many times. It is extremely annoying to switch between windows without the use of the taskbar; I need to go back to the desktop and click from there. I'm using Windows 8.1.
On the other Windows PCs I've used, there has always been a small thumbnail at the bottom of the window showing details of the item/photo selected, but with Window 8, this is missing.
Some details are there, but they are not easy to take in at a glance and I really miss the thumbnail preview. Also, and this is really annoying - the details don't state the size of videos. I'm not going to rundown Windows yet again, as I'm hoping I'm missing something simple.
Is there a way to get this feature back? I've worked hard to make 8 useable, but this little, yet much missed, detail eludes me. Although I'm sure more annoyances will come along .
I don't know how long it's been missing, if it ever was there, but I thought it would be handy to have File Explorer on the Task Bar.
I found it on the Applications page of the start menu, right clicked on it, and saw that File Explorer was already pinned to the task bar. I tried unpinning it, then repinning it, but is just doesn't show up.
I'm a new Win 8.1 user trying to setup a more normal looking desktop on my wife's new laptop.
In an attempt to populate the desktop toolbar with apps on the start page, I found it can't be done as explained in the tutorial. Either when I touch/hold the app icon, or right mouse click, the app is checked and the bottom application bar appears. However, on the app bar my only choices are: "Unpin from Start", "Uninstall", or "Find in Start". I'm not given the option of "Pin to taskbar". I also don't see the choices: "Open new window", "Run as admin", or "Open file location" that I see in an example under that tutorial.
I'm running this account in admin mode. The most recent Windows update was 5/2014, with no new updates available when checked today. Is there something wrong or a control panel setting I need to enable to see the other choices?
Apparently there's supposed to be a checkbox that reads "Show store apps on taskbar" but that isn't there! I have a version of Windows 8.1 that doesn't have this option. I really liked this feature. This worked for me until I installed a fresh installation of Windows 8.1.
((why give me space for a title that is bigger than the number of characters I am allowed to enter?))
I finally took the leap last week and installed a new HD and installed Windows 8 64bit on it. I've been using it and accessing my old apps on my vista drive as well. Today Windows encouraged me to upgrade to Win 8.1, which I did. Now, all the stuff I painstakingly pinned to my taskbar is gone. I have tried to repin it but it says it is already pinned. I have unpinned and repinned, but it still does not show up. In addition, the clock is missing.
I'd really like the use of that desktop/taskbar back.
I am using a browser that starts up automatically in Metro. When I want to get a copy of the screen I end up going back to the Metro screen to start up the snipping tool and it opens in the Desktop, but I need it in the Metro area to get a copy of my screen in the browser. I have had to resort to the old fashioned way of getting a print screen and pasting it into Paint then saving it...
I put Windows 8 back on yesterday, and the build number was not on the bottom right.
However, today I installed Media Center, and now I see Windows 8 Pro with Media Center Build 9200. Why did this all of a sudden appear? How do I remove it?
After updating my GPU driver (and I think, it failed) this red tint appeared It's only at the bottom though, it doesn't affect the whole screen.
It appears at startup and everywhere. It doesn't appear in an external monitor.
I have two graphics cards: Intel HD Graphics 4000 and NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M The NVIDIA is the one I updated recently.
I also tried reinstalling the NVIDIA driver but I don't know if I reinstalled it properly.
Yeah it's a laptop. A Samsung laptop.
Anyway, is this hardware related or software related? Maybe the failed installation is just a coincidence. I also have problems of ants entering my laptop so maybe they messed up the inside.
When I right click an app in the start screen of windows 8.1 the customize bar at the bottom of the screen does not show up. What does happen is that I get a menu when I right click with the commands on the menu. What has happened to the customise tool bar? I had it once and now it is gone.
I find there are lots of driver updater tools available now, but how to select the best one? Yesterday, IObit Driver Booster was released, it said the easiest, one click "update" all outdated drivers. It's free version, but I don't know whether this free software are better.
Unsure what happened here. Never had this kind of error before. Laptop runs fine. However, when I go into control panel and select "check for updates" it literally does nothing other than sort of freeze up...not a crash just runs real slow and it "clocks" Windows update tool never comes up. Everything runs fine and normal otherwise
i know how to disable the tool tips from popping while hover nearly every where, but i can't seem to get rid of the ones on the explorer ribbon,eg. expand ribbon after you hover over the arrow and especially on the file one also, like come on these are so explanatory i don't really need a tool tip box popping up for them.
I use the snipping tool to get a screenshot and save it to my desktop but it never appears on my desktop? I do another snip and save it to my desktop and it says "capture already exists" - but its not on my desktop?
I can view it in my menu under "recent items" but the home of the file is shown in the photo. Why is it not on my desktop as the file sting says it is?
When I use the Snipping Tool and want to save the snip, the tool wants to put the saved file in the Pictures library. Is there any way I can change that default to another folder or even another drive?
I am trying to analyse boot performance using this tool on 8.1 Pro.
Windows Performance Analyzer
I have already updated to the latest version of ADK but after rebooting it fails. I have Windows 6.3.9600 Build 9600 and Performance Recorder version 6.3.9600.16384(winblue_rtm.130821-1623) which I downloaded yesterday from MS.
Can run this on 8.1 or do I have some incorrect version?
One month ago, I installed Windows 8 with media center pack in HP Pavilion DV 2519tu Laptop. At the beginning it was running fine. But from last 10 days, the Key options at the bottom of welcome screen has not shown. What i think it may be due to some wrong software
About two weeks ago when I right-clicked in the bottom-left corner there would be a menu that would pop up. Now it just moves my mouse a little bit and dosen't do anything.
This menu was really useful...It held things like My Computer, Run, Command Prompt etc.
I updated to the windows 8.1 preview but it was working when I did that. about a week after I got the preview it did this.
The disk management tool on my windows doesn't move on and hangs at "connecting to virtual disk service" forever:
My HP desktop is new, windows 8.1, hard drive having ample space. I searched the web and tried, but to no avail. Or where can I download a free windows disk management tool to fix the issue?
My Disk Defragmenter that came with the system will not open. When I try to open it, a CMD windows appears for 1 second and disappears. I have tried opening it in all ways.
I have tried:
Safe Mode Sfc /Scannow Chkdsk Anti Malware scans
I need something like the answer for this question, only a way to do it in Windows 8. His instructions only work on Windows 7.
Having used Windows 8 satisfactorially for a while now on a VM I'm trying to install it on a real PHYSICAL machine. To save the hassle of burning DVD's I decided I would like to install from a USB drive however when trying to create a bootable USB stick using the usb tool from the tutorial it always fail with "Cannot copy the files".
I've tried on 3 different USB sticks from different manufacturers so it's almost outside the possibility that all 3 USB sticks are defective. I'm trying to run this on W7 X64.

Any links to an alternative tool that will do this ...
After running sfc /scannow some time ago, it found file corruption and eventually I found that the corrupted files were Snipping Tool files and one Calculator file getting corrupted in 8.1 by viewing the sfcdetails.txt file (attached). When I run the sfc command every few days, I find that Snipping Tool files are corrupted again. This started after upgrading from Windows 8 to 8.1. This is very strange. What would cause only a Calculator file and usually Snipping Tool files to keep getting corrupted when there are so many other system files?
