I am having a issue with new windows 8.1, it was all working fine few days back then of a sudden some applications, like calendar, Bing Finance, Mail when clicked automatically minimizes on the taskbar. It looks like it has lost focus and is not working.
I understand there might be a third party application doing this and most probably it is the Dropbox that is doing this. However I have tried clean boot and system restart with safe mode, none of which has resolved this issue.
On the same system i have an another user account, this account has no such issues. Every application works and opens fine. I am not sure what went wrong in my primary admin account.
I read the tutorial on removing the Windows password requirement. I changed the settings per the example, everything seemed ok, I restarted and it logged me in as expected, but then it took me to the desktop and opened up all of my external hard drives. I then changed the setting back to requiring a password and still the same result. I have restarted several times and still the same condition.
my PC, where after a period of normal usage it slows down, losing responsiveness, starts to freeze and eventually crashes. While this happens, I can still see stuff on the screen, I can move my mouse around but nothing really responds to my input. After a minute or two, the PC just crashes (I've only got 1 BSOD so far, see attached).
I've run memtest86+, no errors. SSD toolbox says the drive is healthy. I've also reinstalled Windows 8 on my boot SSD, but the problem persists.
I'm running the following build as per TSG SysInfo:

Background Info: We have started upgrading our Front desk PC's at our branches with Lenovo All In One Desktops. Specs differ from Branch to Branch ( Some Dual COres , Some i3's and some i5's . ) Depending on hoe bussy the branches are.
Some of our branches run Diginet Lines, some ADSL Lines, and some are on Fiber Lines.
We run a programme called Bluebird that is sitting on Hosted servers.
Scenario: At one branch we replaced a oldish XP Machine with a new Lenovo all in one i3, Running Win 8 Pro , Before we ship these to the branch we set it up on our side and remove all of the factory Lenovo Software (These confuse Users).
We went and setup this machine and all seemed to be working fine.....For a day or so........Then the branch started complaining about speed on the network. And it seems that speed is only effected when this machine is on and conected to the network.
This is the only Windows 8 PC at that branch.
We are getting complaints from a couple of more branches as we are rolling out these Windows 8 Machines.
NOTE: The branches complaining are the ones on Diginet Lines or V-Sat connections. Branches with Fiber or ADSL CONNECTIONS ARE FINE.
What we done so far: Turned off all outomatic updates. Turned of all programmes ( Adobe, java...ext..) that has some form of automatic updating. Dissabled and deleted all live tiles. There is no Anti-virus on these machines as they have no I-Net access and USB dissabled.
This is getting frustrating as it is only our Windows 8 Machines causing major slow down on these networks.....
I have noticed that applications that are launched from the Metro IU load and run much faster than the same applications launched from IE under desktop. I have even created Metro tiles for applications I normally run as they load and run much faster than launching them from the desktop. This site (Windows Eight Forms) would not load from desktop IE but loads immediately from a Metro tile I created.
I've tried re-indexing, some of the XLS sheets are found, but not many, so I know the directories are included. Pretty sure it was all good on v8. I've switched the Bing search off, and if I let it search everywhere after a bit it gives up and says it's taking too long. It finds files based on the file name and seems to be fairly successful searching PDFs but XLS no good. I'm running Office 2003 so whether it's forgotten how to read old app stuff I don't know...
How I have my phone set up: Phone is Nokia Lumia 520 - ATT
I have 2 groups of contacts, which are 'family' and 'common contacts'. I pull all contacts from outlook online and facebook, in addition to the phone itself. So family and common contacts do not have all my contacts listed in them, because there are quite a few.
These contact 'boxes' tell me who has texted me in the past, by saying 'New Message', etc. Also, my lock screen tells me if I have missed texts, calls, etc.
Pic of Contacts box:
Pic of lock screen
I have more than 7 messages listed on the lock screen that I cannot find the source to. They aren't in my family or common contacts or it would display 'new message' in the green box, so they must be from someone else in my address book. Also, whenever someone who is not a family or common contact messages me, I get the message, but no notification except on the lock screen (which says how many new messages I have, but not who from).
I have a folder that contains a bunch of files that contain craft shows. If I want to search for a file that contains a specific show I'll open the folder then in the search field in the top right corner I'll type in "Christmas Carousel Craft Show". The problem is that every single file containing the word "christmas" or the word "carousel" or the word "craft" or the word "show" pops up! I just want to find the file with the phrase "Christmas Carousel Craft Show".
I'm running Windows 8 at the moment and I am trying to get 8.1 installed.
I go into the Windows Store......and I get no option at all to download and install 8.1. Windows updates are on, not sure if that even matters though. Windows Store is just not giving me any option to install it, or even tell me that its available to download.
Now, I'm in the UK, but as I understood it, Microsoft's release of 8.1 was global. I have also done several reboots of the PC, no change.
I just got Windows 8 a week or so ago and I left it on today. I came home and my internet suddenly couldn't find any networks. I googled how to get it back, but when I go to pc settings there is no Wireless tab. I cant turn it on, I've tried reinstalling my wireless card LAN driver, restarting my PC and doing a system restore to the last recommended time, nothing works.
How to have my ink levels show when I am printing. I am using the same printer, HP.. and they used to show up on XP. or even if I could find the level..period.. Ive looked under preferences under printers..can't find....
I am using a browser that starts up automatically in Metro. When I want to get a copy of the screen I end up going back to the Metro screen to start up the snipping tool and it opens in the Desktop, but I need it in the Metro area to get a copy of my screen in the browser. I have had to resort to the old fashioned way of getting a print screen and pasting it into Paint then saving it...
I'm looking for a Metro app that would allow me to remote control a music software program residing on the Win 8 desktop machine. I'm not looking for a music app that will stream music residing on the PC, just a remote control (via wifi home network), preferably for foobar2000 as it's my main player of choice. There are heaps of apps like this on the android platform and iOS and I'm guessing this is the first hurdle i've come across with the Windows Store.
My file search is not finding files which I know are there, including files that I find and then try a search to see if windows eight can also find them. I have tried all the solutions' offered by googling 'windows 8 not finding file' such as the troubleshooter . One suggestion was to change the location of where to search to 'everywhere' but this option is greyed out.
I have an acer aspire computer with corrupted key windows files. So i am unable to even boot windows. When i start windows i get a BSOD.
What i am trying to do is retrieve my product key from the BIOS with a program that is bootable outside of windows. Like from a USB for example.
My intention is to restore my computer with a clean install by downloading my windows 8 version on another computer to a usb through the windows website after i retreive my product key. Then use this usb to install my windows 8 version back onto the BSOD computer. But as i have stated, i am unable to use the conventional product key finding programs since i cant even boot windows 8.
I am wondering such a tool exists that I can use to create "presets" to automatically shutdown (or start) a pre-defined set of background processes or apps.
I do a lot of different things... AutoCAD, video editing, audio editing, control system programming, etc. When I doing some of these things, I would like some background tasks to shutdown. Right now, I use Task Manager to do this manually.
Even better would be the ability to defect when a specific program is running and that triggers some actions.
When I right click an app in the start screen of windows 8.1 the customize bar at the bottom of the screen does not show up. What does happen is that I get a menu when I right click with the commands on the menu. What has happened to the customise tool bar? I had it once and now it is gone.
I find there are lots of driver updater tools available now, but how to select the best one? Yesterday, IObit Driver Booster was released, it said the easiest, one click "update" all outdated drivers. It's free version, but I don't know whether this free software are better.
Unsure what happened here. Never had this kind of error before. Laptop runs fine. However, when I go into control panel and select "check for updates" it literally does nothing other than sort of freeze up...not a crash just runs real slow and it "clocks" Windows update tool never comes up. Everything runs fine and normal otherwise
I'm running 8.1 on an HP desktop, with IE version 11.0.2.
Some time in the past week or so, the bar at the bottom of the page when I am in a browser session, launched from the desktop, no longer appears. It's the one that usually shows the Connection, Safe to Eject, my Norton status, Volume icons, date/time, etc. I use automatic Windows updates, so I'm kind of assuming it was something there that did it...but don't know for sure.
All I want to know is How Do I Get It Back? I especially need that volume control icon, so I can mute all the ads when I open a news video on Yahoo, Bing, or MSN.
This bar shows just fine when I'm looking at the Desktop screen, just not in the browsers.
i know how to disable the tool tips from popping while hover nearly every where, but i can't seem to get rid of the ones on the explorer ribbon,eg. expand ribbon after you hover over the arrow and especially on the file one also, like come on these are so explanatory i don't really need a tool tip box popping up for them.
I recently switched from OE to WLM because I purchased a new laptop (Win 8.1). I incorrectly assumed, since OE is about 8 years old, WLM would be far more advanced in every aspect.
A huge annoyance is: whenever I need to find a folder in Storage Folders, instead of keying the first letter of the folder I seek, as with OE, I must scroll down to find it. To make matters worse; all of the Storage Folders are expanded to reveal the sub folders by default. So, as I scroll down, each time, I must manually collapse each expanded folder.
Any way to cause WLM Storage Folders to behave like OE.
I use the snipping tool to get a screenshot and save it to my desktop but it never appears on my desktop? I do another snip and save it to my desktop and it says "capture already exists" - but its not on my desktop?
I can view it in my menu under "recent items" but the home of the file is shown in the photo. Why is it not on my desktop as the file sting says it is?
When I use the Snipping Tool and want to save the snip, the tool wants to put the saved file in the Pictures library. Is there any way I can change that default to another folder or even another drive?
