External Hard Drives Opening On Startup
Oct 26, 2013I read the tutorial on removing the Windows password requirement. I changed the settings per the example, everything seemed ok, I restarted and it logged me in as expected, but then it took me to the desktop and opened up all of my external hard drives. I then changed the setting back to requiring a password and still the same result. I have restarted several times and still the same condition.

Opening CDs On Windows 8?
May 29, 2013i have a cd-rom in my teachers book for printing tests for students. The cd has both word files & audio files. On my old PC I can see both and can open, print, save the word files and/listen to the audio files. However on windows 8 the word files don't show at all and as soon as I put the cd in it automatically just opens & starts playing the audio files.
how I can get to the word docs without having to yet again reconnect my old PC, put the files onto USB then put onto the new one?

I've got a simple vbs script that uses the GUID tor searching apps, which then uses "send keys" to find a specific app and open it. The app is just a photo gallery I use in place of my screensaver. The last step I want to add to the script is to open the charms bar (just so I have my app running and over the top I can see the clock.
I currently just trigger the vbs on idle via task scheduler.

Today, for some reason, every tiny movement of my fingers on the touch pad of my computer seems to open the windows store. I know the hot key combination to go back to my desktop but I can't have the store opening like this when I don't want it to. I have tried going to task manager and clicking on end task but it just opens right back up again a few seconds later.

Apr 24, 2013Why has my Internet Explorer, (msn.com) app on the Start screen decided to start opening on the Desktop. I did have an IE in my taskbar for opening it on the desktop. I ' Unpinned' the one on the Taskbar but it doesn't make any difference, it still opens on the Desktop. It has to have a simple answer! The right-hand side of the window states: 'This Product Key doesn't work.........etc. The bottom of the window states that it should have come with an email on purchase of the computer.
When I query this with both Acer & Windows they tell me that the Product Key no. is in the BIOS. That's all well & good but how do I stop this window continually opening?

Dec 10, 2012I've just bought a Toshiba L855 with Windows 8 factory installed. So, I'm trying to learn two things at same time, Windows 8 and the laptop functionality. One of the details that I don't like is the automatic power on and boot up every time I open the display, regardless... may be useful for other users, but not me.
Although there is an option to disable that Panel-open/Power-on, still does it! The "disabled" status is there, but nothing changed. It keeps starting up.
I haven't installed anything yet to the PC until I'm really sure there is nothing wrong with the hardware, I hope is not a warranty issue.
BTW, I have two administrator users, my wife and I. We tried disabling that power up with each user logged and still won't work.

Opening Picture - Always Ask Before Open This File
Sep 15, 2014Every time I open a picture it says "Always ask before open this file" ... over and over again, even when I uncheck it.
It never did this before till I had my computer reset to factory default at the repair shop. I am using Windows 8.1
It does it on about half the pictures that I have. I am working on a project and having to open lots and lots of pictures.

Feb 28, 2013I have an existing OpenOffice document, (it's actually a 375 page book of Spanish) in File Explorer's 'Documents' that I transferred from an old XP laptop by flash drive. All my other documents except .doc & the Oo one, which is: .odt have opened up successfully. I downloaded Oo 3.4.1 which is the latest one. It will by right clicking & selecting 'Open with', after a long period open in Wordpad but a lot of the lines have jumped out of column. I tried right clicking, selecting 'Share with' & 'Specific people' & typed in 'Administrator'' along with my User name of robinp. It didn't solve the problem. I'm going to have a try at right clicking & selecting 'Properties'>'Security', etc. & trying that route.

Dec 28, 2013When I try and play Batman Arkham Origins or Bioshock Infinite, it gives me an application error 0x000007b. I've reinstalled both, reinstalled the visual c++ components. I've done a sfc /scannow and I have the sfcdetails.txt here.
I really wish to play these games, as I was able to play them both for a bit then they stopped working. The problem could be with more than just those two things, I just haven't played everything since it's started.

May 13, 2014We bought a new computer for my granddaughter. Since non had Windows 7 on it, (which I know how to use). We had to buy one with Windows 8. Learning to find out how to remove All the ads and non needed programs has been an ongoing challenge. Right now she only wants to go to very few sites. but Ads along with false java download keep poping up on her browser even thou I tryed hunting down anything that might call them up
She has Mccaffee virus scan and regitpro (I think its called that , she is using pc at thistime so I cant check.)
Is there a way to block a url? These popups do not show up on my computer when I go to the same page as she is on. ITs like an online ad program it adds more ads to websites you visit that are not on the actual website.
Clearing Data / Cache Upon Opening Browser
May 30, 2014Is there a way to clear all data, cache... upon opening a browser. I have ccleaner which removes all data so I need to find a way of executing a clean when i press my browser button.
Why I want to do this as i watch alot of catch up and live tv & in my experience it works smoothly if you clear data, cache... before you start the streaming.
I have 2 browsers on my pc. chrome which i only use for non streaming purposes and opera which I use only for video streaming.

Aug 27, 2014I have been getting this very annoying BSOD when ever I try to watch videos on a web browser or open multiple (youtube?) pages.
My default browser is google chrome but this error also occurs in firefox and internet explorer. I have tried disabling hardware acceleration but the problem still occurs. I've also replaced the RAM(memtest didn't show any errors) but that didn't solve the issue. I've also used different drivers for my GPU and the problem still occurs.
I can play graphically demanding games without a hitch but it's the browsers that are causing this problem.
I used bluescreen view to get a better idea of what's causing this and it shows that tcpip.sys is what causes the crash. A crash that occured last night was caused by ntoskrnl.exe+29652f and tcpip.sys+16bba1.
My system is a:

AMD Phenom II x4 955
AMD HD Sapphire 7850
8GB of DDR3 1600mhz RAM
256GB SSD Crucial MX100(OS)

Windows 8 - Opening Multiple Compressed Files
Mar 27, 2013I am looking for extracting compressed files with windows 8.
whenever I download a file that has multiple compressed files (i.e. r01, r02 etc), they seem like they are not being recognised as a 'package'. If I choose to open one file win zip it doesn't then recognize the rest of the files as winzip files and I can't extract the compressed file.
