I am looking for extracting compressed files with windows 8.
whenever I download a file that has multiple compressed files (i.e. r01, r02 etc), they seem like they are not being recognised as a 'package'. If I choose to open one file win zip it doesn't then recognize the rest of the files as winzip files and I can't extract the compressed file.
I am using Windows 8. Is there a way that I can make a shortcut for Chrome that will open multiple URL's at once? I know how to make one that will open a single URL, but is there a way to open several? For example, can I make a shortcut on my desktop that will open google.com, facebook.com and twitter.com all at once.
I recently purchased an Asus N56VJ with Windows 8 pre-installed. At first I was trying to downgrade to Windows 7, but could not get past the windows splash screen trying to do a clean install . Anyway, while I was trying to figure out how to install windows 7, I was messing around in the bios. I decided to just stick with the Windows 8, but my bios is screwed up. I do not have any boot configuration options anymore. I tried to flash my bios, but the bios was still the same. I did a full reset on my machine, and still no change in the bios. Is there any way to get my bios options back to the factory settings with all the options?
I went into my power options to change some of the advanced settings and most of them are missing? I am on windows 8.1 with a week old Surface Pro 3. I want to say I read somewhere that hyper-v can cause options to be missing, but I honestly don't even know what that is and I don't have it installed.
I built a computer recently. Since day one I get BSODs but the drivers, and Bug/Checks listed are never the same.I was thinking it couldn't be a single device or driver so I've:
Replaced the MOBO. Repair Installed the OS. Replaced the RAM.
It BSOD'd multiple times between each change.
The only things I've run are IE/FF and Ableton Live 9. Ableton is usually running during the BSOD but it was not the last time.
I just noticed that when I go to the Power Options that the options are missing. It says the Power Plan is missing or unavailable or something such. One answer said to do a refresh or reset of Windows 8. Isn't that a bit drastic? Is there no way to do it by tweaks. I did that refresh once and lost more than I thought I was supposed to.
One day I go to shutdown/hibernate/sleep button and a pop up says "no power options available". I can still preform these options but I have to go through signing out first then picking. How do I change this? Oh, and no, I didn't add or upgrade, etc. anything lately.
Running Windows 8 on my ASUS laptop and all of a sudden it has started opening all folders in a new window... every time without fail... even though the folder options are showing "Open in same window" selected.
For the record, I did try unselecting and then reselecting the same window option, applied it to all folders, rebooted my system... and nothing. Everything still opens in a new window every time.
I have had windows update set to check for updates and notify me so I can choose when, or in some cases if, to install them. This evening, I checked and the option had been changed to automatically install all updates.
I've recently upgraded to windows 8.1 and I noticed it has reverted all my language changes back to Chinese (Hong Kong). After redownloading and setting all the primary languages back to English in the control Panel I've realized that everything (even the login screen) is in English EXCEPT for some options in metro, how would you fully change this?
i have a cd-rom in my teachers book for printing tests for students. The cd has both word files & audio files. On my old PC I can see both and can open, print, save the word files and/listen to the audio files. However on windows 8 the word files don't show at all and as soon as I put the cd in it automatically just opens & starts playing the audio files.
how I can get to the word docs without having to yet again reconnect my old PC, put the files onto USB then put onto the new one?
One month ago, I installed Windows 8 with media center pack in HP Pavilion DV 2519tu Laptop. At the beginning it was running fine. But from last 10 days, the Key options at the bottom of welcome screen has not shown. What i think it may be due to some wrong software
I installed windows 8 on a desktop computer that had windows 7 before. Screensaver was working perfectly on windows 7. Since windows 8, the screensaver won't start, the display won't turn off after 15 minutes like I set it up in power options. Just to test, I removed all USB devices that could prevent the screensaver to start. I closed all the programs running in the taskbar, including those hidden. The screensaver won't start even if I set it to one minute.
Pressing the preview screensaver button works. But letting it go by itself doesn't.
New to Windows 8 - it came with my new Lenovo laptop. Forgive me if I'm asking questions that are answered elsewhere - I looked, but did not find these answered.
How to do some of the things I'm used to doing, especially in IE, where I no longer see a top menu bar.
How do I add and access Favorites? How do I get to Internet Options?
How do I email a link to someone? (I tried right-clicking several places - no luck.)
I recently upgraded to 8.1 (mistake) and have been having issues with my harddrive. Just today, I restarted my computer only to get a "windows failed to start" message. I went into the recovery options, and attemped a system restore (didnt work), system refresh (recovery media wasn't present), and CMD commands (chkdsk) and even sfc /scannow which I can't seem to get to run, I always get the "Will start on next boot" message, which it never does. So I attempted using an ISO with the windows 8.1 professional. Tried everything I did above, and still nothing. Refresh fails with the CD, and when i try to install a new partition, it only gives me the option of upgrading (which i cant) or reinstalling everything deleting anything in the process. I don't understand why I can't install on a new partition like I did with Windows 7.
As you probably all know, Windows8 forces vsync which makes it difficult for many of us to enjoy games in windowed mode.
In Win7 you could disable it simply through turning off Aero, however this option doesn't seem to exist in Windows 8. Any way to force Vsync OFF?! I'd love to upgrade properly, but this is a real deal-breaker for me and many others. Why there isn't the option.
I'm using an ATI card so I'm unable to force it off in the settings (unlike Nvidia users).
How do I stop such kind of pop-up ads tiny windows from opening in FF21 and chrome in w8?
It is such a sickening, irritating feature. It has become a terror to move mouse in the browser lest that would come over such double-lined tags and this window will open.
Even this site windows8forum has started this. So inconsiderate and sickening.
I am using Dell Latitude D520 running in Windows 8. I just bought a new webcam, installed the drivers without any difficulties. But when I try to view my webcam, either Amcap, yahoo messenger, or any programs or websites that displays my webcam, Windows 8 would prompt me that my PC encountered an error and restarts.
my OS is Windows 8.1 64-bit. It boots just fine, but I suddenly found out that something wrong happened with my BCD store. Tried more workarounds but none worked. The last I found How To Restore Windows 8 Boot Options Menu ended on bcdedit error mentioned below. The problem indicates with following signs:
- bcdedit /enum prints error "The boot configuration data store could not be opened."
- bcdboot C:windows prints error "BFSVC Error: BcdOpenSystemStore failed with unexpected error code, Status
= [c000015c]"
- msconfig's boot tab shows empty OSes list (nothing on the tab is clickablle)
- the same with System Properties, Advanced tab, Startup and Restore dialog (OS dropdown has no entries)
- Trying to enter diagnostic boot by Shft + Restart doesnot seem to offer full recovery menu. It boots to GUI boot menu offering Continue or Troubleshooting, Troubleshooting submenu offers Manage UEFI options (this brings me to BIOS setup after reboot) and Shut down. No manage boot options, no other choices.
All of this point me to that my booting configuration is somehow ill (I wonder a bit that Windows still can start).
I am new to Windows 8 and need to use my laptop for my business and am very frustrated right now. When opening a PDF from an e-mail attachment, I don't know how to close it out after I'm done viewing it. And now every time I try to open a new PDF attachment, it is bringing me back to the same PDF I opened yesterday (which happens to be my credit card statement!) and won't open the new PDF I need to view and print.
There's a certain folder on my external HDD which causes Windows Explorer to crash when I attempt to open it. I've tried running a full virus scan and nothing has been detected, so I'm ruling out anything like that. Could it be down to file corruption?
Also, strangely enough, I copied the folder to my desktop and was able to open it and look through the files, however, as soon as I try to sort the files by certain parameters (date, size, etc.), it causes Windows Explorer to crash again.
I suppose I could use Word instead of notepad, but I don't want to wait forever for the files to open. Windows8 and 7 will let you open as many different copies of the same txt file as you want. With keeping my computer on most of the time, and doing various things, sometimes I forget that I have a file open. The most common instance is my list of software keys and activation codes. I had to reinstall something yesterday and had the file open, and it ended up behind a bunch of windows. Much later, I bought a new piece of software and had to add something to the list, a couple of somethings. I saved and closed--fine. Then, turning the computer off, it told me that my "Versions" file was still open--did I want to save, or what? At that point, I had to cancel the shutdown, open the saved copy, compare the saved copy with the one that was still open to see which information was different. Obviously, at that moment, I had not figured out which copy was which. If I had saved, it would have overwritten the changes, by reverting to the old version that I had open. I've had this happen several times, sometimes with new information in each file. I fail to understand why, when I try to open a txt file, Windows does not alert me that it is already open, and do I want to open another copy?
I got all my windows mail files transferred to my new pc with Windows 8. Since they are in Vista Windows mail format I cannot open them. There does not seem to be an app for this. What I can use to view the contents?
I've just upgraded to 8.1 and I have seen this exact problem on a different laptop of similar specs (my specs should be in my profile).
I use a custom theme with dark colors. I like dark background and light text. The problem is that very often when I open a new explorer (like My Computer) or browser window (like Firefox), the whole background of the window/frame becomes white for a very brief period before showing the actual content of the window and assuming the dark background color that I assigned.
The apps on the start window in windows 8 pro will not open, what can be done to refresh them. I tried the refresh on the system but it would not complete the task.
I just recently installed 8.1 on my desktop. These are the specs:
ASUS M5A97 mobo AMD phenom II X4 965 BE stock clocks crossfire HD 7770's 8gb DDR3 500 tv sata internal hard drive 7200rpm. 500w psu.
The problem is, I'm not able to boot up my PC. When I boot, I get the Berta fish logo, with a white dash in the upper left corner. It will stay there and load for as long as I let it. If I hit my reset button then it will take me to the startup repair options. Booting into safe mode from there yields the same result. The only way I've managed to fix it was either a refresh or a system restore.
