Start Window Apps Not Opening In Windows 8 Pro
Dec 28, 2013The apps on the start window in windows 8 pro will not open, what can be done to refresh them. I tried the refresh on the system but it would not complete the task.

PC Settings / Product Key - Window Keeps Opening On Its Own
Aug 31, 2013Windows 8 preinstalled on new computers have the problem of the PC Settings window keep opening up on its own.
The right-hand side of the window states: 'This Product Key doesn't work.........etc. The bottom of the window states that it should have come with an email on purchase of the computer.
When I query this with both Acer & Windows they tell me that the Product Key no. is in the BIOS. That's all well & good but how do I stop this window continually opening?

Feb 3, 2013After upgrading to Windows 8, the I.E. went to hiding, so I retrieved and pin it to task bar. Now, after I open it, it closes right away when I try to go onto a bookmark. The error message says "Internet explorer has stopped working" A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available".

Apr 1, 2014I normally only use 2 apps: the Mail and the Video, and even after I close these two apps, when I take a look at the Processes tab in the Task Manager, they are still there, there's no more CPU usage but they keep using Memory, which is usually a lot. So every time I want to actually close an app I have to open up the Task Manager, go to the Process tab and kill them off there, otherwise they'll keep using my memory.

Jan 12, 2014Had, and still have installed in machine, an SSD with Windows 7 as OS Had, and still have, a Western Digital 2 TB external HD attached. It was used as back up for the original set up. This also has the Smart Ware software installed but which I have not used.
Tried a dual boot on a new SSD using Windows 8.1 recently but turned out ot be a pain so I simply installed 8.1 on new disk.
When I boot and Windows 8.1 starts, window showing the external hard drive and contents appears. How can I stop this?
I am planning to reformat this external storage and redo the back up using the new 8.1 OS and current content of the my other HDD containing our data, will this likely stop the "pop-up" on start?

Jun 18, 2014The skype, weather, bing news, bing health & fitness, bing finance, and, bing food & drink apps are not opening. It will show the 'app start screen' but then immediately close. I've read several things can affect it like antivirus but I have McAfee the day I bought my Lenovo Z510 (almost 2 weeks ago) and all metro apps were working fine. I have my UAC on and already did a "sfc /scannow" in cmd (run as administrator). The last resort would be refresh windows 8.1 but I don't want to.

Dec 1, 2012My windows apps dont want to open, the store opens shows the brief case logo for a 2-3 seconds and it minimises when i click on it on it to open it again the same thing happens and all other apps dont even respond just their icon move a little on the sides to indicate they are clicked but they don't open at all.
I use windows 8 enterprise and it is activated, it happened before, one way to fix it but its annoying is to create new account and on it they work just fine, but the old one don't.
I can delete and it and recreate it but then i have to register some of my programs again. I read on the internet about that issue so my resolution is not the problem UAC is still on. I use windows defender for antivirus.

I tried to uninstall 8.1 but created even more problems. Got everything back to normal, but the tiff files opening.

I tried Microsoft's solution of unchecking the box under options that says "Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE)" but it was already unchecked. I checked it and unchecked it and I'm still having the problem. This is using Excel 2013 with Windows 8.1 64-bit.

so I right clicked on it and changed it to open with word2007, but when I get the message "this app can't run on your pc" and it doesn't open

Aug 12, 2014I have some old XP graphics software that I need to run every few days. The problem is that it automatically goes full screen at start up and here is no way to reduce it.
When the software was written 4:3 monitors were all there was, so going full screen was fine. But, now with a 16:9 monitor it stretches everything and makes stuff very difficult to make sense of.
I am looking for something that will run the XP stuff in it's own work space so I can adjust the size of that window and in return, adjust the graphics size and shape back to 4:3.
I tried using Virtual-PCs like VMWare Player and VirtualBox but they both seem overkill and made the software run very slow as I had to use my old copy of win98 as the Guest OS. I can't afford to buy a copy of XP or win7 to use as a Guest.
Can't See Real Pics When Opening In Apps Such As Adobe Photoshop?

Oct 28, 2013Basically I had the original "user" in control panel that I used when getting my gateway laptop and I decided to make a new user with admin privileges for no apparent real reason and then I ended up removing the old user account.
Once I did this, a bunch of programs that I installed with my original user account stopped opening, so I uninstalled them and re installed them and they still aren't opening. They just sit in task manager and don't open - is there anything I can do to fix this or is my best bet to reformat [which I could do, but I have a lot of files and I don't have a backup external apart from online which would take a long time to back up with cause of uploading etc].

Now I want this app to run in a window instead of fullscreen. An app like this.. i don't get it.. why leave it full screen when you have to multitask? I'd like to run this in a custom sized window that I can tell to always stay on top of other apps.

Mar 23, 2014I am trying to run CoreInfo.exe to see if my processor supports Hyper-V before paying msoft for Windows 8-pro, but Windows 8.0 slams the CMD window shut instantly.
I tried all suggestions but still it flashes open then closed.
Failed: Elevated command prompt
Failed: CMD [enter] coreinfo.exe -v
Failed: Set Run as Administrator
Failed: Set Compatibility to 7, XP, Vista
Failed: CMD /K CoreInfo
Failed: CMD /K Core info > core.txt = Redirect output to a text file
It seems like Coreinfo is appending an "Exit" to the command line command string. About right for the inept msoft programmers.
How to stop this long enough to read the output?

May 2, 2014When I open a .pdf it uses the Reader app. I have no problem with that except when I am on a website it opens the pdf in a new half window. Meaning the original site and the .pdf each are in their own side by side window. Yes I can drag it to full but everything I read said it should open full. Or at least that's how I would like it.
I have not found any settings to make it always open full. I should say that if I just open the Reader app on its own it does open full screen.

Nov 27, 2013I have a lot of excel spreadsheets with embedded links to jpg and pdf documents stored on an NAS. In both Win XP and Win 7 I could set the file association to make them always open in the Win picture preview pane.
In Win 8.1 they will ONLY open in IE11.
I have changed the registry as directed by MS in this article to no avail.

Mar 30, 2014I've recently purchased a new laptop with Windows 8.1 pre-installed. First question is how do i enable a confirm window to pop up when deleting something? I don't like how i can just hit delete and it moves it (Only to the recycle bin, but i'd rather it didn't).
Secondly how do i stop the start menu from switching to that Windows 8 menu view? I did originally change it so that when you click the start menu (Bottom left in) it would actually bring up the start menu, but it seems to have reverted. On top of this how do i change it so that pressing the Windows button brings up the start menu rather than the Windows 8 menu view thing?
Thirdly how do i enable file details when in Windows Explorer. So in Windows 7 when you select a file it would give the size, name, author, date last edited etc in the details pane. How do i get that now?
Finally, how do i change my task bars transparency?

Oct 28, 2013I have a Windows 8.1 and a problem with my apps. When I try to open weather, finance and other apps, They show their start-up screen and in a couple of seconds they're gone - I am brought to my metro screen... Tried to reinstall the apps, but hadn't got any luck...
But wait, it get interesting: Even though the weather app crashes, I have a live tile option on for that app, and it shows me weather nicely.

Feb 22, 2014 Some few days ago there came a problem with my Laptop; and the problem was it starts consuming lot of battery when goes to idle mode. After Searching on internet i came to know that there is virus in My Laptop and there are only some programs which can remove it. Not even Avira, Microsoft Defender and any other. So i Just installed UnHackME software are cleaned my Windows 8.1. It worked Perfect and my problem seems to be resolved. But after removing that virus. New problem came in my Windows 8.1 and the Problem is :- When i Open Built-in Apps in my windows 8.1 Like App store, Skype, Mail, Finance, New, Health & Fitness, Weather, Calender, People, Food & Drink, Music, Games, Maps, Videos, News etc they just disappear after a single flash screen. The only apps which are in working condition are Camera, Sky drive and some apps which are created by installing some programs in my Windows 8.1.
What happens when i Open my apps :-
The app Screen Comes and after some 2-3 seconds it disappears...
What I've done so far :-
I tried to visit many communities and blogs but didn't find my problem resolved. I tried to run command sfc /scannow gave me following results after full scan Windows Resource Protection Found Corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windirLogsCBSCBS.log. For example C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log. Note that logging is currently not supported in offline servicing scenerios. (Problem Not resolved) I tried to run different commands in different blogs even to re-install App Store so that i can even uninstall all apps and re-install them all but .. (Problem Not Resolve)
Because i have huge collection of software installed in my Windows and being student i cannot afford to get the pain of re-installing the windows 8.1. And after some days I have exams and I've to study as well.
