Laptop Starts Up Always When Opening Display
Dec 10, 2012
I've just bought a Toshiba L855 with Windows 8 factory installed. So, I'm trying to learn two things at same time, Windows 8 and the laptop functionality. One of the details that I don't like is the automatic power on and boot up every time I open the display, regardless... may be useful for other users, but not me.
Although there is an option to disable that Panel-open/Power-on, still does it! The "disabled" status is there, but nothing changed. It keeps starting up.
I haven't installed anything yet to the PC until I'm really sure there is nothing wrong with the hardware, I hope is not a warranty issue.
BTW, I have two administrator users, my wife and I. We tried disabling that power up with each user logged and still won't work.

So ever since i upgraded to windows 8.1 my laptop has been having a slight problem. When ever i turn on my laptop after i turn it off at night it starts as a dim screen. The only way i can make it go back to normal is by restarting my laptop but this gets reallllly frustrating cause i have to do this everyday when i start up my laptop. I try to increase my screen brightness but it would just say its at 100.

I've got a new laptop (Dell Inspiron 17r special edition) for 1 week now, and last night I've been playing Devil May Cry and I started noticing lag. Normally, I would play Devil May Cry and Resident Evil 6 on highest settings with google chrome and utorrent running in the background and it would not lag.

I got a samsung np700 get two bleeps when opening programs and on boot up.
Turned of windows default sounds did not work ....
Turned off bleep warnings in the registry, but stuck with two bleeps on boot up, i thought startup one bleep was normal but the store says two bleeps are ok.
Just wanted confirmation from another user that 2 bleeps are normal with samsung as the store did not seem too confident.
[No error messages, pc running ok, sfc & chkdsk ok, devicemanager list ok] ....

I've upgraded to windows 8.1 a few days ago through a custom install as I was running windows 8 x86 and wanted to switch to x64. I've also just updated the BIOS.
After the upgrade though, my laptop goes into sleep/standby and locks the screen instead of turning off the display as I have it set. So, if I edit any power plan settings to turn off the display after 2 minutes, it will go to sleep after 2 minutes.

Downloaded this AM to 8.1 from Win 8. Have an old Gateway laptop, can't afford to get new even though I need one. The display is very dark - it was fine with Win 8. Is there some setting I need to change - can't find any way to make it brighter. Like I said, it was fine before & I didn't change any settings myself.

I have a problem of windows 8.1 and my laptop (HP EliteBook 8560w). My display is full HD (1920x1080), 15.6", GPU: nVidia Quadro 2000M. When I installed windows 8.1 (all version, 64 bit) the GPU driver is updated automatically at lastest version (327.31). But some 3rd application ex: Google chrome... is blurry. Then, I chosed the option "Let me choose one scaling option for all my displays" at 125%. All thing is OK.
But whenever I started my windows, my display always flashing one time, about 1-2s. it's very inconvenience. Because of that problem, I downgrade to windows 8.0. But i still want to use windows 8.1 ....

My dell inspiron n5010 running on Windows 8, today all of a sudden started showing some grains on the display.Soon after it happened, it showed me a message which says
"Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restarts. were just collecting some error info, and then well restart for you (100% complete)".
The system restarted by itself and it started running system repair. The system repair screen is also grainy. After the repairing is done, it restarted showing Windows 8 logo(that too with grainy display). But nothing really happens after that and it its stuck. So I decided to switch it off and turn it back ON after sometimes. I did that and the PC booted with no issues with the display perfectly fine. But the same issue is repeating again and again and I will have to shut down the system for some time and then again turn it back ON to make it run normal.

Since I have installed windows 8.1, every time for example if I don't use my laptop for 10 minutes, and because of the battery saving setting plan, my display turns off. Before I installed windows 8.1, I could just move a mouse or press any key and display would turn on, but since the installation I have to restart my laptop (Samsung ultrabook), even if I can hear it's on and working.

Since installing Windows 8 to my laptop, I can no longer display to my Samsung USB hub monitor.
When I try to duplicate or extend, the hub says 'Connecting to PC...' but then nothing happens. Something is working as my mouse and keyboard are plugged into the hub and they work. I just cant get the display. I think all my drivers are up to date.

I have a new Dell Inspiron 15 7000 laptop with an i7-4510U, Intel 4400 Graphics, 1920x1080 screen, and Windows 8.1. I have noticed that the display will brighten and dim when switching between apps. For example, going from a dark desktop background to a white background such as File Explorer, it will take the display about 5 to 10 seconds to brighten to the appropriate level. Going back to the desktop it will dim and sometimes even show a quick flash. I have the display set at 60% brightness and have turned off the adaptive brightens. Also using the latest Intel drivers. Exhibits this behavior on battery or AC. Never seen this on a laptop before.

I'm having a bit of a problem with my Windows 8. I'm currently running Windows 8 32-Bit, everything went well until this morning. I turned it on, and right before the log-on screen it started flashing purple. That's it, I couldn't do anything else, just watch the screen flash purple.
I have ran into this problem a while back and managed to fix it by using the Windows Setup and using the System Restore option but now for some reason I have no clue on how to Boot from a USB/CD.. it's not working.
I have a Compaq PC so it's a bit complicated to boot from devices.

I have just upgraded from Win 8 to Win 8.1.I set no password option for start up and wake up from sleep. When I start the window it starts for "Otheruser", and the startup screen shows the following:
Other user
User name or password is incorrect. Tryagain.
OK
When I click OK the screen displays the name of the Other user and prompts for apassword. But this name is actually my first name (Jim), which appears as a folder in "OS > Users" along with another folder with my name in the following format: jimlee_000. The latter is the real folder that has all my files, while the jim folder has only AppData folder. When I enter my password the windows starts normally.
How can I fix this and make the windows start with me rather than Other user? Shall I just delete the jim folder in OS> Users? Why does Windows create two folders with my name anyway? I checked Control Panel / User accounts and there is only one user--me.

I have a startup video I like and have it set up to start fine in win 7 with task scheduler. In win 8 I follow the same procedure to create a basic task and it does not work. very simply :
1. create basic task
2.name it - I name it
3. trigger - I choose daily
4. daily- I choose the time
5. Action- start a program
6. start a program-now this works in win 7 fine-I browse to the video I want to play and select it. the video is set up to open with jetaudio and when I manually go to the the video and double click it the video opens fine and plays with jet audio.
7. finish-click finish
now I think I am done so I test it with 'run' and first win 8 asks how do I want to open it...jet audio, adobe, internet explorer, etc...I know I have this file type and as a matter of fact all video file defaulted to jet audio. so why it is asking this in win 8 is beyond me. it does not do this in win 7. so anyway I click jetaudio-now jetaudio starts but does not play the video. its crazy because when I go directly to the video file in 'my videos' double click it and jetaudio opens and plays the video file.
is it me or is it win 8 scheduler?

In IE when clicking on an Email address / link it used to start Outlook (W7 and earlier) or Outlook express in XP - remember that one.
Now in Windows 8 it starts that HORRIBLE windows mail metro app --which wants a Microsoft account and all sorts of other BS
This apparently can be customized to open your desired application ( from IE ==>tools==>Internet options==>programs --then I'm stuck as they've changed the old settings from default e-mail program to something I haven't a clue what to enter.
I've got these screens (enc) -- what do I do to get OUTLOOK to open instead of the Windows mail app.
Sometimes stuff is dumbed down so much that the application is useless -- and then they go to the other extreme where you need a Doctorate in Computer studies to fathom it out.
(Using Windows 8 x-64, IE10 but 32 bit version of office 2010 so the pgm I think is in program files(x86)msofficeoffice14outlook.exe)

My issue is I have two users on my pc, after I reset(reboot) the pc on one user or shutdown, windows 8.1 automatically boots to that last user that was logged in and it's very bad behavior that I hate. I want to tweak it in a way so after i reboot or shutdown my pc on one user, and after I turn it back on or it reboots I want for Windows 8.1 to display me a login screen where I can click on a user with which I want to login. How can I make it to work like this? (also I want it so after that reboot and that login screen will be displayed the last user that was logged on will not be logged on still so I won't end up with two users logged on at the same time...)

I saw thye option to revery back but with they screen flashing I couldn't hit it. Then the settings set in and the screen went back to the sigin in menu in portrait.
I can enter my password, sign in, and then it tries to load the start menu but the screen starts flashing and after about 8 seconds, it goes back to the sign in menu. Now I am stuck in this process and cant get back past the sign in screen to access the control panel and set the screen back to landscape.

I cannot find anything to fix this behavior. I have looked in the registry and found nothing. I would also like to find out how to completely remove unwanted entries in the manage add-ons windows. there should be a way to do this. I keep hearing of procedures to do this and all the options mentioned are always greyed out or never work. Hey Microsoft STOP GREYING OUT NEEDED FUNCTIONS!!! Image uploaded show how ie starts every time.

Just got the Lenovo ideatab lynx in the mail today. Used it for like 2 hours.
Only things I did: install chrome, uninstalled nortan (borderline spyware antivirus in my opinion).
It restarted without telling my anything to configure updates (said do not shut off, preparing to configure blah blah blah) Then I plugged in my galaxy s3 to use usb, its started installing the drivers then shut down again.
Now it is constantly shutting down as soon as it gets up. No peripherals are plugged in, it is connected to power.
I don't have a keyboard to run usb for safe mode. And I'm pretty good with computers.

After I remove the nvidia driver is it works fine again. I tried the newest and the older nvidia drivers but none of them were stable. The symtopms are different each time. Sometimes BSOD sometimes some part of graphics on the screen goes pink sometimes the screen blacks out and does not return until I hard reset it.

6gb ddr3 ram at 1066mhz bus
Nvidia Geforce 9800GT 512mb/256bits external graphic card.
1tb SATA WD hdd.
And I have facing a problem that when I turned ON computer it sounds a beep and Acer Empowering People appears a couple of seconds then display is gone. then after coupe of seconds, again beeps sounds and again Acer logo appears and then starts the windows. Why this happens. because of that booting time is much longer.
In bios. I tried two hard drive modes. native ide and Raid. third is AHCI I think and this I did not try yet.
