Downloaded this AM to 8.1 from Win 8. Have an old Gateway laptop, can't afford to get new even though I need one. The display is very dark - it was fine with Win 8. Is there some setting I need to change - can't find any way to make it brighter. Like I said, it was fine before & I didn't change any settings myself.
View 1 RepliesI just upgraded to 8.1 and now a game that I play called theHunter wont launch. When I run the launcher it comes up with an error saying 'No Appropriate Display Modes'. It was working fine on Windows 8. The support at the Hunter hasn't been very useful and despite trying a number of different things I can't seem to solve this issue.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Sony Vaio Pro 13 laptop, running Windows 8.1. If I have a couple of Excel spreadsheets open, close the laptop lid, leave it a minute or so, then re-open the lid, the screen momentarily goes dark, then comes to life again. All open apps are OK with the exception of the Excel sheets. In these, all the cells (& ribbon) are unviewable. The whole worksheet area on the screen is not the normal cells but a screen full of whatever colour I set for the default ribbon colour (some kind of beigy grey...). You can't click on any of the cells, can't see what's in them etc... you CAN close the sheet using the window close x at top right (even though you can't actually see the x) but that's all.
I have set up Windows so that NO ACTION is taken on closing the lid. It seems to be the same problem as described at hibernate - Excel windows invisible when laptop comes back from sleep - Super User but no working solution is available. (The one on this link refers to clicking 'restore' but that doesn't work) Running Excel 2013 (part of Office 2013).
I'm stuck as to what may be causing this... but I guess it should be an Excel problem since other apps (e.g. Word) don't exhibit this problem, but that may be a function of what's open at the time the lid is closed / re-opened?
I have a Gateway NE56R41u with an Intel B960 Processor, 4GB DDR3 Memory and running Windows 8.1 I have had the Laptop for 1 year. I got the info above from stickers on the Laptop so there is no more info I can give you. It originally came with Windows 8 and I upgraded it to 8.1 when that became available. When I boot the laptop it goes to the first screen, I click on the icon and the password screen comes up, I put in the password and it goes to a black screen with nothing on it and stays there on that black screen. I tried hitting the F key on boot up but nothing happens.It is not the screen, not the graphics card, otherwise I wouldn't see the first two screens. It acts like the OS has been wiped off.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy wife has a Toshiba Laptop with windows 8, upgraded to 8.1. About a month ago I set up Skype on her computer and all was working fine. Then 2 days ago she tells me it is not working. If you click on the tile, it tries to open, but after 3 second or so it goes back to the desktop. If I move the mouse in to the upper left corner, I can see the opening screen it gives you and I can click on it and it will come up again but only for a second or so and then goes back to the desktop. It never starts Skype. She has the same problem with Microsoft Solitaire Collection. I looked in Programs and Features to do a repair, but they are not listed.
Since there is no listing in Programs and Features, I don't even have the option to uninstall and then reinstall it.
I've just bought a Toshiba L855 with Windows 8 factory installed. So, I'm trying to learn two things at same time, Windows 8 and the laptop functionality. One of the details that I don't like is the automatic power on and boot up every time I open the display, regardless... may be useful for other users, but not me.
Although there is an option to disable that Panel-open/Power-on, still does it! The "disabled" status is there, but nothing changed. It keeps starting up.
I haven't installed anything yet to the PC until I'm really sure there is nothing wrong with the hardware, I hope is not a warranty issue.
BTW, I have two administrator users, my wife and I. We tried disabling that power up with each user logged and still won't work.
I've upgraded to windows 8.1 a few days ago through a custom install as I was running windows 8 x86 and wanted to switch to x64. I've also just updated the BIOS.
After the upgrade though, my laptop goes into sleep/standby and locks the screen instead of turning off the display as I have it set. So, if I edit any power plan settings to turn off the display after 2 minutes, it will go to sleep after 2 minutes.
I have a problem of windows 8.1 and my laptop (HP EliteBook 8560w). My display is full HD (1920x1080), 15.6", GPU: nVidia Quadro 2000M. When I installed windows 8.1 (all version, 64 bit) the GPU driver is updated automatically at lastest version (327.31). But some 3rd application ex: Google chrome... is blurry. Then, I chosed the option "Let me choose one scaling option for all my displays" at 125%. All thing is OK.
But whenever I started my windows, my display always flashing one time, about 1-2s. it's very inconvenience. Because of that problem, I downgrade to windows 8.0. But i still want to use windows 8.1 ....
My dell inspiron n5010 running on Windows 8, today all of a sudden started showing some grains on the display.Soon after it happened, it showed me a message which says
"Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restarts. were just collecting some error info, and then well restart for you (100% complete)".
The system restarted by itself and it started running system repair. The system repair screen is also grainy. After the repairing is done, it restarted showing Windows 8 logo(that too with grainy display).But nothing really happens after that and it its stuck. So I decided to switch it off and turn it back ON after sometimes. I did that and the PC booted with no issues with the display perfectly fine. But the same issue is repeating again and again and I will have to shut down the system for some time and then again turn it back ON to make it run normal.
I am fixing a customer's laptop Lenovo N585 and when I push the power button to turn on the machine, I will hear the fan spinning very low but no display. I already hook up a monitor to it but nothing happen. I pressed the FN / F3 buttons and still no display. I even removed the bottom cover to reseat the ram and still no display.

Before I installed windows 8.1, I could just move a mouse or press any key and display would turn on, but since the installation I have to restart my laptop (Samsung ultrabook), even if I can hear it's on and working.

When I try to duplicate or extend, the hub says 'Connecting to PC...' but then nothing happens. Something is working as my mouse and keyboard are plugged into the hub and they work. I just cant get the display. I think all my drivers are up to date.
I recently changed to windows 8, there's a problem with my graphic card (I think). I play the lord of the rings online, and when I try to launch it, as soon as it goes into full screen, the whole screen gets dark bluish (not BSOD). When thah happens the screen stays that way even if I close lotro and the only way it goes back to normal is by rebooting.

P.S. I have tried updating my video card driver, it says it's up to date... the version is WDDM v1.1
I have a new Dell Inspiron 15 7000 laptop with an i7-4510U, Intel 4400 Graphics, 1920x1080 screen, and Windows 8.1. I have noticed that the display will brighten and dim when switching between apps. For example, going from a dark desktop background to a white background such as File Explorer, it will take the display about 5 to 10 seconds to brighten to the appropriate level. Going back to the desktop it will dim and sometimes even show a quick flash. I have the display set at 60% brightness and have turned off the adaptive brightens. Also using the latest Intel drivers. Exhibits this behavior on battery or AC. Never seen this on a laptop before.

I have made sure that the brightness slider is all the way up, I have gone into advanced display settings and turned off any sort of auto dim feature and made sure that all brightness settings are turned all the way up.
I am on an old gateway Vista laptop (dual core cpu, 2GB ram) and I have Windows 8 release preview 32 bit installed on a separate partition on my HDD. When I installed it, everything went fine. Then after running 8 for about 10 minutes, all of a sudden a window popped up above my battery icon in the tray saying that I should replace my battery, and the screen went dim. It was as if I turned the brightness slider all the way down. Well all of the sliders and settings are still at 100% brightness, unplugged or on power.
When I boot back into Vista, everything works fine. There is no battery warning or brightness issues.
My friend's new Sony laptop has an external monitor connected via HDMI. When he restarts the computer, about half the time the external monitor is not getting a signal, it is blank. He then restarts it until it works. I've only connected remotely to it, and I've been able to get it to go on by playing with the settings in Display properties. Possibly if I was in front of the computer I could try Fn + F5 to see if that works, but he is the kind of guy who does not want to press keys to make it work, he wants it to just work. What might be done to make the second monitor get a signal on a more consistent basis?

When I highlight text in Word 2010, the background of the highlight becomes white and the text itself becomes dark blue. Is there a way to change it in Regedit (or elsewhere)?
I tried fiddling with colors here, but no luck:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Control Panel > Desktop Colors
I think I got this Event Log error after I upgraded to 8.1 but I' not sure. Anyway, when I go to event viewer I get a message that says "One or more logs in the query have errors" and then is says the Log that it cannot find is "Microsoft-Windows-DxpTaskRingtone/Analytic". I have looked and the log does not exist and OF COURSE when I try to cheat the system and create the log it does not like the "/" in the name! What the heck is going on and how I can tell Windows 8.1 to create the log.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have just upgraded to 8.1 from 8 and cannot find Widows Accessories anywhere. I don't really recall it being in 8 either but am not sure. I would like to have System Tools, Paint, Fax and Scan and Word Pad at least available to me from the Desktop.
Has Windows Accessories been dropped from Win 8.1?
I installed 8.0 with the factory disk and for awhile the option to "refresh your pc" worked perfectly. However after the 8.1 update, I get a message stating to insert the 8.1 disk and it won't work with my regular 8.0 disk. I don't have an 8.1 disk. Is there a way to download an iso and use that to refresh the pc then use the original 8.0 key? I usually try to restore every 6 months because it's a habit I have had since 7. Usually my windows works fine but I run low on SSD space and it's easier to erase and restart everytime.

I was always able to login as a different user and use my work network user credentials i.e. workgroupusername. On this version I can do this. I can only add users once logged in and switch between them on the login screen.
This version doesn't show the 'login with different user' link. I've looked around the settings, but haven't had any luck with getting it to appear on the login screen.
XPS-15 L521X running Windows 8 Pro. I have Intel Rapid Storage Manager installed and operating (thinking this may matter). I have tried 4 times to upgrade to 8.1, no-go. It completes the upgrade to the point of restarting after making all configurations (according to the message text), but on restart it goes from Dell logo to blank screen, though I can hear the disk churning, and the mouse shows when I swipe the keypad; mouse also shows a busy indicator. I tried leaving the system alone last night for 6 hours, but when I came back it was still churning on the blank screen. When I shut down the system via power button and re-booted, it restored the original windows 8 and gave me a message that the system could not be upgraded to 8.1.
I tried uninstalling my firewall/virus program and that didn't work. At this point I don't care to guess anymore... I may call tech support and see what they say. I see by others' posts around the internet that there seem to many problems upgrading to 8.1.
I bought new lenovo ideapad Z400 touch 2 month ago with Windows 8. Last week i upgraded to win 8.1 and recover back to win 8 , since then i have some problems.
When I have the Task Manager open, I notice the disk usage climbing to 50, 75, 100 also the CPU , even though there's scarcely any disk activity going on, the laptop's fan is working harder and very noisy , my processor's speed and heat are jumping high without any programs on.
I tried almost anything, checked for viruses, disabled unnecessary startup programs, clean boot, but it still the same.
Recently I upgraded my Toshiba Portege R500 laptop from Windows 7 to windows 8 pro. Everything worked fine for almost a month and since last few days I am not able to see login screen, its just blank. Since I am unable to login I cannot access the apps/programs neither I can shut the laptop from Windows 8 via Charm menu or Cntrl+Alt+Del.
I am stuck as I cannot reinstall the OS as when I use power down button on the laptop the machine goes to sleep and on power up I cannot access boot priority screen to change to optical drive.
I originally had windows 8 prowmc licensed (I have the iso image for that in case I need to reinstall); I upgraded /updated from store free update; now I have a valid licensed 8.1 running; but I don't have an iso; and if I have to re-install, I have to install 8, activate it and again do a 3.5 gb download to update;
I read from DISM that I can make a install.wim image from the existing hdd OS partition; so is it possible to create an image for the existing 8.1 OS?
I have a Dell Latitude E6500. Before tonight, I was running Windows 7. I decided to update to Windows 8 and now I am unable to get any web pages to load. My wireless is connected but no pages will load when I open IE.
I can't imagine I am the only one who has run in to this.
Maybe it's a device driver; but I can't get to the Dell site to do any diagnostics.
I recently upgraded to 8.1 (actually, made a clean install), and everything seems to be working as designed. Except, on the Start Screen, although all the other apps show live tiles, the Weather app does not, showing only a plain blue background with the word "Weather" on it. The live tile feature is definitely turned on for this app.
