I have just upgraded to 8.1 from 8 and cannot find Widows Accessories anywhere. I don't really recall it being in 8 either but am not sure. I would like to have System Tools, Paint, Fax and Scan and Word Pad at least available to me from the Desktop.
Has Windows Accessories been dropped from Win 8.1?
After 23 Windows updates were installed a few days ago (to Windows 8.1 PC) I noticed a couple of things
1. Most of the 3rd party programs I had added to start screen had disappeared
2. Most of the Windows Accessories had disappeared from 'Apps' screen under 'Windows Accessories' (this affected all users on the PC). See screenshot (only Notepad remaining).
I found that most of the 3rd party programs were still installed, so just re-did 'pin to start' on those.
I checked one of missing accessories, Snipping Tool, and the exe file still exists in Windows/System32 folder. I tried creating a shortcut and copying to Start Menu/Programs folder, but then appears under 'S' rather than Windows Accessories!
Unfortunately I don't have a restore point that I can go back to and don't want to 'refresh' Windows install (as would lose installed 3rd party applications).
How I can restore Windows Accessories (or has experienced similar issue after updates)?
Are the Accessories gone in Windows 8? I tried to find the calculator and recorder, but have they been discontinued? If so, any replacements?

I am using Windows 8.1 pre-installed on a new laptop used mostly for business, and use a mouse, keyboard and graphics tablet. I find that frequently a "Windows Accessories" app Windows Journal for note-taking and handwriting conversion opens a new file for no apparent reason. I have had as many as 20 empty windows start) and want to disable this but can't find away to.
When showing apps as tiles, there is no "uninstall" option for Windows category items (Accessories, Ease of Access, system) as far as I can see.
In Control Panel / Programs & Features/ there is no Windows Accessories Item.
In the Settings/PC settings/Search and Apps/App sizes only a couple of these "Accessories" are shown (e.g. Calculator and sound Recorder) but most others including Journal aren't.
Is there any other way to disable or remove this app?
I updated to windows 8.1 yesterday and now I can't drag anything. I have tried everything I think, but it won't drag..Restore would probably work but I don't want to that.
View 9 Replies View RelatedXPS-15 L521X running Windows 8 Pro. I have Intel Rapid Storage Manager installed and operating (thinking this may matter). I have tried 4 times to upgrade to 8.1, no-go. It completes the upgrade to the point of restarting after making all configurations (according to the message text), but on restart it goes from Dell logo to blank screen, though I can hear the disk churning, and the mouse shows when I swipe the keypad; mouse also shows a busy indicator. I tried leaving the system alone last night for 6 hours, but when I came back it was still churning on the blank screen. When I shut down the system via power button and re-booted, it restored the original windows 8 and gave me a message that the system could not be upgraded to 8.1.
I tried uninstalling my firewall/virus program and that didn't work. At this point I don't care to guess anymore... I may call tech support and see what they say. I see by others' posts around the internet that there seem to many problems upgrading to 8.1.
I have a Dell Latitude E6500. Before tonight, I was running Windows 7. I decided to update to Windows 8 and now I am unable to get any web pages to load. My wireless is connected but no pages will load when I open IE.
I can't imagine I am the only one who has run in to this.
Maybe it's a device driver; but I can't get to the Dell site to do any diagnostics.
I have a Gateway NE56R41u with an Intel B960 Processor, 4GB DDR3 Memory and running Windows 8.1 I have had the Laptop for 1 year. I got the info above from stickers on the Laptop so there is no more info I can give you. It originally came with Windows 8 and I upgraded it to 8.1 when that became available. When I boot the laptop it goes to the first screen, I click on the icon and the password screen comes up, I put in the password and it goes to a black screen with nothing on it and stays there on that black screen. I tried hitting the F key on boot up but nothing happens.It is not the screen, not the graphics card, otherwise I wouldn't see the first two screens. It acts like the OS has been wiped off.

I use a custom theme with dark colors. I like dark background and light text. The problem is that very often when I open a new explorer (like My Computer) or browser window (like Firefox), the whole background of the window/frame becomes white for a very brief period before showing the actual content of the window and assuming the dark background color that I assigned.

I notice that starting when I upgraded from Windows 8 to 8.1, if I open a Windows App (such as the Store), the app will IMMEDIATELY minimize to the taskbar. This does not happen with applications such as IE, but it happens with BOTH Windows and non-Windows apps. This was not happening before the upgrade. I have run Windows Update but it still happens.

I have a 1 TB external hard drive with plenty of space, but there are some mp3 files on it. I'd like to know if storing the disk image on this drive will affect the mp3's (i.e., are they safe?)
The laptop I have is an ASUS g74, I purchased the copy of windows 8 from microsoft's site, upgrading from windows 7 pro. I opted to keep all my personal files/apps because the programs it warned me as being incompatible were random games and such.
I googled this problem, and it seemed fairly common months ago when windows 8 first came out on dell/HP laptops. It worked flawlessly when I first upgraded and booted up fine but once I restarted I couldn't see anything other than the screen occasionally flickering brighter and darker.
However, if I plug my laptop up to a TV with an HDMI cable I can see everything on the TV. It's just the laptop screen that is blank.
Ever since I upgraded to Windows 8.1 this has begun happening randomly when I try to play League of Legends my laptop will BSOD giving me the error Driver_IRQL_less_or_equal, never happened once before 8.1, I can play any other games fine it seems, but when I try to play LoL it tends to happen. View 1 Replies View RelatedI've upgraded from Windows 7 PC to Windows 8 Pro (not clean install) today and I can't now view my personal files in the new apps screen. E.g If I go into the photo app it says there are no pics available. I thought I'd lost the data but when searching around I noticed a folder had been created on the new desktop which was the same name as my PC name in Windows 7. Clicking into this folder took me to Users folder -> and my folders which contain all the music and photo files etc.
If I launch Explorer, On the left hand side of the Explorer screen (where it displays the Library docs) I am unable to select any of these or drag files to these from the folder described above. Also, when connecting my iPhone, it asks if I want to import my pics. I know all of these have already been imported but it doesn't recognise this and tries to import them all again, I assume into the new location in Windows 8.
Is this something to do with permissions. I've used my hotmail account to set up as a new Windows 8 profile and this has Admin rights. Or do I physically have to copy he data to the new location where personal library files are held in Windows 8.

If you are in the login screen, the selected language in the right left corner and the internet connection in the left corner. Both of those two signs are flickering in the corners. And my cursor is also flickering.

I even troubleshooted it's performance.... but no luck
Before upgrading i ran the upgrade assistant, and it said inte(r) network connections isn't compatible with the OS... so i completely removed it...then installed Windows 8
So I just did a clean install 8 upgraded to windows 8.1, I'm pretty sure I got all my drivers installed.

My wife has a Toshiba Laptop with windows 8, upgraded to 8.1. About a month ago I set up Skype on her computer and all was working fine. Then 2 days ago she tells me it is not working. If you click on the tile, it tries to open, but after 3 second or so it goes back to the desktop. If I move the mouse in to the upper left corner, I can see the opening screen it gives you and I can click on it and it will come up again but only for a second or so and then goes back to the desktop. It never starts Skype. She has the same problem with Microsoft Solitaire Collection. I looked in Programs and Features to do a repair, but they are not listed.
Since there is no listing in Programs and Features, I don't even have the option to uninstall and then reinstall it.
I think I got this Event Log error after I upgraded to 8.1 but I' not sure. Anyway, when I go to event viewer I get a message that says "One or more logs in the query have errors" and then is says the Log that it cannot find is "Microsoft-Windows-DxpTaskRingtone/Analytic". I have looked and the log does not exist and OF COURSE when I try to cheat the system and create the log it does not like the "/" in the name! What the heck is going on and how I can tell Windows 8.1 to create the log.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI installed 8.0 with the factory disk and for awhile the option to "refresh your pc" worked perfectly. However after the 8.1 update, I get a message stating to insert the 8.1 disk and it won't work with my regular 8.0 disk. I don't have an 8.1 disk. Is there a way to download an iso and use that to refresh the pc then use the original 8.0 key? I usually try to restore every 6 months because it's a habit I have had since 7. Usually my windows works fine but I run low on SSD space and it's easier to erase and restart everytime.

I was always able to login as a different user and use my work network user credentials i.e. workgroupusername. On this version I can do this. I can only add users once logged in and switch between them on the login screen.
This version doesn't show the 'login with different user' link. I've looked around the settings, but haven't had any luck with getting it to appear on the login screen.
