Search Not Finding Files - Location Option Grayed Out
Oct 1, 2013My file search is not finding files which I know are there, including files that I find and then try a search to see if windows eight can also find them. I have tried all the solutions' offered by googling 'windows 8 not finding file' such as the troubleshooter . One suggestion was to change the location of where to search to 'everywhere' but this option is greyed out.

Aug 8, 2014windows 8.1. I have installed a third party apllication which alowed for automatic login via usb. I changed my offline account to online, noticed my user account is missing from logon screen(only 1 account on machine) used usb for login. Removed the software and now I can't log onto windows. Blue screen with easy of access in corner and power button. Can't go further. My question is where in the regestry will I be able to reset the logon credential manager to default. I'm able to access regestry files via other boot device. Don't want to reinstall.

Mar 7, 2013Today, when I opened the windows defender i saw my PC status at risk and when i tried to update it's virus definitions I couldn't complete, it says network connection but i could connect to website download anything without any interruption. I even tried to update virus definitions through windows update control panel but it was of no use. I had installed MSE on windows 7(i have a dual booting) . Did this action affect my windows 8 OS and how do i get rid of it.

Aug 10, 2013Windows Defender won't update its anti malware definitions... as of now they are a few days old. Manually pressing the "update" button won't do a thing. Also, when trying to update from the cmd prompt, I am told that no update is needed since everything is up-to-date.

Screen Fades In Steps Between Apps / Desktop / Start Screen
Dec 14, 2013I've tried just about everything, but can't seem to find a setting to stop this action. The screen on my laptop (Sony Flip 15A, intel4400/geforce735) seems to increase and decrease in brightness between screens. It's rather annoying not just because of the change, but also because it takes several seconds to occur and it occurs in discrete steps. I'm running the latest drivers from both intel and nvidia. I've tried turning off adaptive brightness and disabling the sensor service, and all effects (fade in, UAC, etc) have been turned off. A video of the condition is shown below:

It even happen when no programs are opening/closing - for example, if I view a dark background web page and then a lighter background, the brightness shifts. I can't imagine how awful this will be in photoshop.

I'm talking about the big ones I see with the black bar, such as low battery warning.
Twice I've been on the desktop and I never got a low battery warning. To test I made sure I was on the Start screen and sure enough the warning popped up. Also, when I switched over to the desktop the battery icon showed the exclamation point where I don't think it ever did when always on the desktop.

Mar 18, 2014As I understand it, when I it the Windows key or mouse-click lower left while in the desktop, it is supposed to take me to the Start Screen. Indeed, it did work this way for some time. However, now, when I do either, it takes me to the Apps Screen and I have to do something (one of several) to switch to the Start Screen. Once there, if I hit Windows key or click lower left repeatedly, it goes Start Screen -> Apps Screen -> Desktop -> Apps Screen -> Desktop, etc. I think this is wrong. It is certainly not what I want; but my searching has not run across any other mention of this behavior. I don't want it to go to the Apps Screen when I hit Windows key or click in lower left. I only want to go there if I specifically do something to get there from the Start screen. (E.g., little arrow, Ctrl-Tab) How do I get back to the Start Screen being the default choice between these two?
The behavior changed some time after I upgraded to Windows 8.1; but I am not sure if it was immediately after. I suspect not. I've only had the computer for a week, so I am still becoming accustomed to Windows 8. (Coming from XP and 7 and having read a lot of negative comments, I was expecting that I would hate Windows 8. As it turns out, I don't understand the presumed problems. The functionality of Windows 7 is still there. The Start Screen is actually nicer than the Start button

And in control panel/programs and features I now have a column that says last used on at the top. However it is empty.

Windows Search 8.1 Not Finding XLS Content
Jan 13, 2014I've tried re-indexing, some of the XLS sheets are found, but not many, so I know the directories are included. Pretty sure it was all good on v8. I've switched the Bing search off, and if I let it search everywhere after a bit it gives up and says it's taking too long. It finds files based on the file name and seems to be fairly successful searching PDFs but XLS no good. I'm running Office 2003 so whether it's forgotten how to read old app stuff I don't know...

I have 2 groups of contacts, which are 'family' and 'common contacts'. I pull all contacts from outlook online and facebook, in addition to the phone itself. So family and common contacts do not have all my contacts listed in them, because there are quite a few.
These contact 'boxes' tell me who has texted me in the past, by saying 'New Message', etc. Also, my lock screen tells me if I have missed texts, calls, etc.

I have more than 7 messages listed on the lock screen that I cannot find the source to. They aren't in my family or common contacts or it would display 'new message' in the green box, so they must be from someone else in my address book. Also, whenever someone who is not a family or common contact messages me, I get the message, but no notification except on the lock screen (which says how many new messages I have, but not who from).

If I want to search for a file that contains a specific show I'll open the folder then in the search field in the top right corner I'll type in "Christmas Carousel Craft Show". The problem is that every single file containing the word "christmas" or the word "carousel" or the word "craft" or the word "show" pops up! I just want to find the file with the phrase "Christmas Carousel Craft Show".

Oct 17, 2013I'm running Windows 8 at the moment and I am trying to get 8.1 installed.
I go into the Windows Store......and I get no option at all to download and install 8.1. Windows updates are on, not sure if that even matters though. Windows Store is just not giving me any option to install it, or even tell me that its available to download.
Now, I'm in the UK, but as I understood it, Microsoft's release of 8.1 was global. I have also done several reboots of the PC, no change.

I googled how to get it back, but when I go to pc settings there is no Wireless tab. I cant turn it on, I've tried reinstalling my wireless card LAN driver, restarting my PC and doing a system restore to the last recommended time, nothing works.

Aug 15, 2014I have an acer aspire computer with corrupted key windows files. So i am unable to even boot windows. When i start windows i get a BSOD.
What i am trying to do is retrieve my product key from the BIOS with a program that is bootable outside of windows. Like from a USB for example.
My intention is to restore my computer with a clean install by downloading my windows 8 version on another computer to a usb through the windows website after i retreive my product key. Then use this usb to install my windows 8 version back onto the BSOD computer. But as i have stated, i am unable to use the conventional product key finding programs since i cant even boot windows 8.

Maintenance :: Finding Background App / Process Manager Presets
Mar 13, 2014I am wondering such a tool exists that I can use to create "presets" to automatically shutdown (or start) a pre-defined set of background processes or apps.
I do a lot of different things... AutoCAD, video editing, audio editing, control system programming, etc. When I doing some of these things, I would like some background tasks to shutdown. Right now, I use Task Manager to do this manually.
Even better would be the ability to defect when a specific program is running and that triggers some actions.
Presets for Windows Services would be great too.

Aug 23, 2014I recently switched from OE to WLM because I purchased a new laptop (Win 8.1). I incorrectly assumed, since OE is about 8 years old, WLM would be far more advanced in every aspect.
A huge annoyance is: whenever I need to find a folder in Storage Folders, instead of keying the first letter of the folder I seek, as with OE, I must scroll down to find it. To make matters worse; all of the Storage Folders are expanded to reveal the sub folders by default. So, as I scroll down, each time, I must manually collapse each expanded folder.
Any way to cause WLM Storage Folders to behave like OE.

Jan 8, 2013At least Windows 8 makes it easy to create a Start Screen tile for a program, or for a folder. But if you have a FILE that you open often (like a Word file, a Notepad file, or a PDF) and you want a tile to open it, there's no ready-made way to create one.
But you can do it this way. Open your Start Menu folder, which is C:Users(Your Username)AppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms (It's a hidden folder, so just paste the above path into the File Explorer address bar.)
Then open the folder containing your file. Right-click the file's icon and select "Copy." Then right-click in the Start Menu folder and select NOT "Paste," but "Paste Shortcut."
This makes the shortcut look like an "App" to Windows 8, so if you then go to the Metro Search Screen and search for "Apps" it will come up there, and you can right-click it and "Pin to Start."
