Jul 25, 2014I have been reading about tricks for downloading Windows 8.1 ISOs to perform clean installs on OEM machines.
I also happen now to be in the same situation since the manufacturer did not package any media with the OS.
But my question now is:
- How to get Windows 8.1 with Update 1 already included in ISO from an official source like MSDN?
Additional doubts:
- In this tutorial, does the process already gives you the latest Windows 8.1 ISO with Update 1 slipstreamed?
Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 ISO - Download or Create
- If this ISO can be get with torrents, what would be the source to check for file integrity and SHA from MSDN ?
- Can Windows 8.1 Update 1 ISO be installed with a regular 8.1 Pro product key?
Deleting Corrupt / Read-only File?
Nov 20, 2013I recently opened a USB drive on my PC and noticed that the drive says to have 0 bytes of space left and the file is read-only. I cannot delete it or format the drive. I have even tried taking ownership of the file through an elevated command prompt where I was faced with the error: "File ownership cannot be applied on insecure file systems; there is no support for ACL's."

Aug 20, 2014My laptop is running ok but I have noticed that certain programs have been taking a lot longer than usual to install/update (e.g. iTunes) but they always do. Then the last few days AVG Antivirus has been wanting to auto-update the software (not just the virus definitions) but each time it would freeze during the ''configuring'' step and subsequently cause every other program running to freeze and stop the opening of any other program - although I could still move the cursor so not a complete freeze if that makes sense.
So today I removed AVG with the removal tool and tried to do a fresh install but now I get a failure message immediately telling me ''MSI Engine: failed to initialize the package''.
How to go about fixing this and ran system file check which said corrupt files were found but it was unable to repair some of them. Here is the log:

Corrupt System Files After New Installation Of Windows 8 Upgrade
Dec 2, 2012After installing Windows 8 upgrade over Win7 on two desktops and one laptop, I ran sfc /scannow (in an administrator command box) as I usually do after new installations, and in all three cases sfc found corrupt system files and repaired them. So downloading the upgrade and installing might find running sfc useful!

Feb 23, 2013Just purchased a new desktop PC with Windows 8, after some video card issues (now resolved), tried to run System File Checker and received:
"Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them...."
I copied the CBS file to take a look but i'm not really sure which of the multiple errors are causing my issue.
I've got a few:
"[DIRSD OWNER WARNING]"
and
"Failed to create CSI transaction"
"Failed to get CSI Inventory"
Printing Tries To Print To File After Windows Update
Jan 5, 2013Printing was working correctly for me until today.
This morning I installed Windows Update KB2753842. After that, I could not longer print. This might be coincidental, but it is the only thing that I can think of that has changed since I was able to print.
Now, when I try to print I get the 'Save Print Output As' wizard, prompting me to save to a file. This happens even though the previous Print wizard screen has the 'Print to file' choice unticked.

Apr 10, 2014I have tried updating my Windows 8.1 Pro (64-bit, upgraded from Windows 8 Pro) with the new "Update 1" (KB2919355) but it always fails with ERROR code 8007005 (or 80073712).
What I have tried do to fix:
Run WindowsUpdateDiagnostic (that e.g. removes files from C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionDownload and cleans Windows update history metadata info)DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /ScanhealthDISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestorehealthDISM.EXE /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup
After all of this, still the update (KB2919355) fails
There must be something that Microsoft needs to fix, there are xxxxxxxxxxxx amount of similar complains and reports out there...
Maintenance :: Windows 8.1 Update 1 File History After Restore?
May 26, 2014I ran into a minor problem with Acronis True Image 2014 after letting Microsoft install Update 1 on my system. For some reason the desktop Icons go blank for ~15 seconds when I boot. As soon as I uninstall TI the problem goes away. The problem also seems to go away if I "turn off" Auto Logon to my Microsoft Account. Base on all my Acronis Forum discussions I must be the only person in the world with this problem! The stand alone version of TI 2014 works OK. I will continue to use the standalone version of TI 2014 to backup the system (Boot Partition) periodically since I know it works and has saved me from disaster numerous times.
So...I'm ready to let Windows 8.1 handle my data backups using the File History function. Dumb question - if I do a system restore because of a virus or whatever will Windows 8.1 be able to use the file history maintained by the version of Windows 8.1 that was wiped out by the restore? The file history will be on a separate disk drive.
Windows Search 8.1 Not Finding XLS Content
Jan 13, 2014I've tried re-indexing, some of the XLS sheets are found, but not many, so I know the directories are included. Pretty sure it was all good on v8. I've switched the Bing search off, and if I let it search everywhere after a bit it gives up and says it's taking too long. It finds files based on the file name and seems to be fairly successful searching PDFs but XLS no good. I'm running Office 2003 so whether it's forgotten how to read old app stuff I don't know...

I have 2 groups of contacts, which are 'family' and 'common contacts'. I pull all contacts from outlook online and facebook, in addition to the phone itself. So family and common contacts do not have all my contacts listed in them, because there are quite a few.
These contact 'boxes' tell me who has texted me in the past, by saying 'New Message', etc. Also, my lock screen tells me if I have missed texts, calls, etc.

I have more than 7 messages listed on the lock screen that I cannot find the source to. They aren't in my family or common contacts or it would display 'new message' in the green box, so they must be from someone else in my address book. Also, whenever someone who is not a family or common contact messages me, I get the message, but no notification except on the lock screen (which says how many new messages I have, but not who from).
Updates :: Windows Store Not Finding 8.1 Install
Oct 17, 2013I'm running Windows 8 at the moment and I am trying to get 8.1 installed.
I go into the Windows Store......and I get no option at all to download and install 8.1. Windows updates are on, not sure if that even matters though. Windows Store is just not giving me any option to install it, or even tell me that its available to download.
Now, I'm in the UK, but as I understood it, Microsoft's release of 8.1 was global. I have also done several reboots of the PC, no change.

Finding Windows 8 Product Key In BIOS On BSoD Computer
Aug 15, 2014I have an acer aspire computer with corrupted key windows files. So i am unable to even boot windows. When i start windows i get a BSOD.
What i am trying to do is retrieve my product key from the BIOS with a program that is bootable outside of windows. Like from a USB for example.
My intention is to restore my computer with a clean install by downloading my windows 8 version on another computer to a usb through the windows website after i retreive my product key. Then use this usb to install my windows 8 version back onto the BSOD computer. But as i have stated, i am unable to use the conventional product key finding programs since i cant even boot windows 8.
File Explorer Not Working Correctly With 8.1 Update
Apr 20, 2014Yesterday, while using File Explorer a problem occurred. I had a CD open showing files on the CD and I had a folder open (that is on my desktop) and was copying files from the CD to the desktop folder. I am not sure what I may have done, but after closing the File Explorer, it is no longer working correctly. When I left click on the folder icon on the taskbar on my desktop nothing is shown on my desktop. The taskbar icon shows that File Explorer is open and if I hover my cursor over it, a 'mini' is shown (just above the taskbar) of what is open, but will not expand to view on the desktop, just shows the 'open' page above the taskbar. If I open WORD or some other program and try to 'saveas' the files are shown and I can save the document. I down loaded a "file manager" from the Microsoft Store so I can get at and work with files, but I am not able to use the Win 8 File Explorer. I have done a normal shutdown and restart, but still have the problem. I tried to do a system restore, but the restore would not complete. (suggested I turn off antivirus).

May 26, 2014I am on my laptop at the moment and am trying to make a BIOS update stick for flashing my main desktop at home that has an Asus P8Z77-V board.
Now I have downloaded and saved both the BIOS utility - renamer and the BIOS version itself and both are zipped files.
I have tried using 7-zip to rename that BIOS file which the manual tells me I have to do but to get it to work when I use the 7-zip it goes to choose an app from the store. Now I have never fully understood zipping and unzipping files to be able to use the application and now this message has got me even more perplexed as to what to do!
I did try this at home on the main machine but I did go round in circles on that (7) machine and until I get the BIOS ready on the stick I cannot flash the BIOS on that main machine.

May 18, 2014This morning i got a "blue screen of death" and my pac said "your pc has ran into some problems". It then fixed everything and all was fine. I then typed "sfc / scannow" in command prompt and come up with the message "windows resource protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them windows 8".

When it finally lets me log in after turning the computer on and off manually, all of my programs were deleted, i couldn't access my computer's hard drive(?)(c:windows) , and i couldn't access system restore (or msconfig / any of the advance system tools). Any other way to do a full system restore without any of the pre mentioned options?

Oct 21, 2013After upgrading to Windows 8.1, I started experiencing a weird boot issue. When I boot Windows I only get a black, empty screen. As soon as the BIOS splash disappears the computer stops booting. No disk activity, nothing. My first instinct was to run bootrec /fixmbr and bootrec /fixboot from the Windows 8 install/recovery DVD. This temporarily solves my issue, but the problem returns on next boot.
I already had this issue before the 8.1 update, but it only occurred sporadically. I would usually work around this issue by rebooting.

Oct 18, 2013I am currently on Windows 8. I am trying ti update to 8.1. I went to the store and hit download. The download started and got to 50% then a message said 'installing preparing your pc'. About 15 seconds after that it starts all over downloading. This has repeatedly happened for the last 14 hours. I have restarted and shutdown my pc and when I go back to the store and hit download it says it is downloading. I tried to cancel the download without success. I then went back to download again and it tells me app has been installed.
P.S. Are there any other ways to do the update besides from the store?

Oct 18, 2013Machine is an Acer Aspire laptop, i5 processor, 4GBRAM. Shipped with Windows 7, have been running Windows 8 on it for over 6 months now.
Certain updates from Windows Update simply will not install, it says "Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes". These updates are the ones that will allow me to update to 8.1 via the store.
Upon scouring the internet, I have tried many fixes, including a slui.exe activation, running a DISM cleanup, running sfc / scannow, disabling all non-Microsoft services from msconfig, running the SURT tool.....

Feb 5, 2014It seems my windows ran into a problem. I am using Sony VAIO with OS windows 8, ram 8 GB with Nvidia gt780m graphic card 1 GB. It all started when i restored my pc (without recovery disks) as i was getting some problem in installation of Game (assassin Creed 4) and after restoration it worked fine and well. Then after a week or so my windows crashed and I rushed to service centre as I was not having my recovery disks to restore it. back I got my windows again and so I tried to install the same game but it was not installing showing error (screenshot is attached). I looked to other software like NFS MW 2 again I had same problem.
To ensure that installation files were not corrupt i copied the same files on my friends PC and installed it and it worked well and fine on it. Then I got to know it has something to do with my windows system file so I Google it and found the solution to run SFC/scannow command I did the same and there it was the corrupted files of windows(SFC details are attached). I found one particular solution (though it didn't work) Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth command and tried to repair those files but it alwayz get stuck. How to get on to this issue cuz neither it's allowing me to play games nor letting me run a application properly it alwayz interrupt the application and say that certain .exe need to be closed.
