If someone was to copy the variables and I just re-added them myself would that work or would I have to do a system restore?

How can I list the most infrequently used programs?
I've tried re-indexing, some of the XLS sheets are found, but not many, so I know the directories are included. Pretty sure it was all good on v8. I've switched the Bing search off, and if I let it search everywhere after a bit it gives up and says it's taking too long. It finds files based on the file name and seems to be fairly successful searching PDFs but XLS no good. I'm running Office 2003 so whether it's forgotten how to read old app stuff I don't know...

Phone is Nokia Lumia 520 - ATT
I have 2 groups of contacts, which are 'family' and 'common contacts'. I pull all contacts from outlook online and facebook, in addition to the phone itself. So family and common contacts do not have all my contacts listed in them, because there are quite a few.
These contact 'boxes' tell me who has texted me in the past, by saying 'New Message', etc. Also, my lock screen tells me if I have missed texts, calls, etc.
Pic of Contacts box:
Pic of lock screen
I have more than 7 messages listed on the lock screen that I cannot find the source to. They aren't in my family or common contacts or it would display 'new message' in the green box, so they must be from someone else in my address book. Also, whenever someone who is not a family or common contact messages me, I get the message, but no notification except on the lock screen (which says how many new messages I have, but not who from).
Where are the start screen definitions, ie, tiles and groups?

I have a folder that contains a bunch of files that contain craft shows. If I want to search for a file that contains a specific show I'll open the folder then in the search field in the top right corner I'll type in "Christmas Carousel Craft Show". The problem is that every single file containing the word "christmas" or the word "carousel" or the word "craft" or the word "show" pops up! I just want to find the file with the phrase "Christmas Carousel Craft Show".
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm running Windows 8 at the moment and I am trying to get 8.1 installed.
I go into the Windows Store......and I get no option at all to download and install 8.1. Windows updates are on, not sure if that even matters though. Windows Store is just not giving me any option to install it, or even tell me that its available to download.
Now, I'm in the UK, but as I understood it, Microsoft's release of 8.1 was global. I have also done several reboots of the PC, no change.
I just got Windows 8 a week or so ago and I left it on today. I came home and my internet suddenly couldn't find any networks. I googled how to get it back, but when I go to pc settings there is no Wireless tab. I cant turn it on, I've tried reinstalling my wireless card LAN driver, restarting my PC and doing a system restore to the last recommended time, nothing works.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm looking for a Metro app that would allow me to remote control a music software program residing on the Win 8 desktop machine. I'm not looking for a music app that will stream music residing on the PC, just a remote control (via wifi home network), preferably for foobar2000 as it's my main player of choice. There are heaps of apps like this on the android platform and iOS and I'm guessing this is the first hurdle i've come across with the Windows Store.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an acer aspire computer with corrupted key windows files. So i am unable to even boot windows. When i start windows i get a BSOD.
What i am trying to do is retrieve my product key from the BIOS with a program that is bootable outside of windows. Like from a USB for example.
My intention is to restore my computer with a clean install by downloading my windows 8 version on another computer to a usb through the windows website after i retreive my product key. Then use this usb to install my windows 8 version back onto the BSOD computer. But as i have stated, i am unable to use the conventional product key finding programs since i cant even boot windows 8.
I would like to know if, with Windows 8.1 Update, there is a way to know if its installation has some of its corrupt file?

When I start my laptop, first comes the Anti virus, and after 1 of 2 minutes then Google Drives load etc, etc
I am wondering such a tool exists that I can use to create "presets" to automatically shutdown (or start) a pre-defined set of background processes or apps.
I do a lot of different things... AutoCAD, video editing, audio editing, control system programming, etc. When I doing some of these things, I would like some background tasks to shutdown. Right now, I use Task Manager to do this manually.
Even better would be the ability to defect when a specific program is running and that triggers some actions.
Presets for Windows Services would be great too.
I recently switched from OE to WLM because I purchased a new laptop (Win 8.1). I incorrectly assumed, since OE is about 8 years old, WLM would be far more advanced in every aspect.
A huge annoyance is: whenever I need to find a folder in Storage Folders, instead of keying the first letter of the folder I seek, as with OE, I must scroll down to find it. To make matters worse; all of the Storage Folders are expanded to reveal the sub folders by default. So, as I scroll down, each time, I must manually collapse each expanded folder.
Any way to cause WLM Storage Folders to behave like OE.

One issue might involve a registry edit so I began to look in the registry but I've noticed something odd when I run regedit. Each time I run it, what appears under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE (HKLM) is not always the same. (I was looking for Components under HKLM). Here's an example running it 10 times.
I run regedit and under HKLM see 7 entries
BCD00000000
Drivers
Hardware
Sam
Security
Software
System
Then I exit regedit (without making any changes) and run it again and see that Drivers has disappeared leaving the other 6 entries. Exit and run again I see the same 6 entries. I repeat the exit and run again process seeing the same 6 entries each time, but on the 7th run, Drivers reappears giving 7 entries again. On the next run a new entry, Components appears (between BCD00000000 and Drivers) giving 8 entries. Exit and run again, same 8 entries but then on the next run Drivers and Components both disappear leaving the other 6 entries.
I just run another 10 times or so and each time has 6 entries (no Drivers or Components)
I'm trying to remove the Homegroup from Windows Explorer. I was following the tutorial that I used for Windows 7 but it doesn't work. Any change I try to make to the registry is denied.
how do you make changes to the registry in Windows 8? Not being able to definitely makes it more secure but also impossible to customize.
For example there is:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftABCEFG]
"HIJ"=hex(7):25,00,77,00,69,00,6E,00,64,00,69,00,72,00,
25,00,5C,00,73,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6D,00,33 ,00,32,00,5C,00,77,00,
62,00,65,00,6D,00,5C,00,63,00,69,00,6D,00,77,00,69 ,00,6E,00,33,00,32,00,
2E,00,6D,00,6F,00,66,00,00,00,00,00
And I want append (without overwritting) there more data (green below) and remove some data (red above) to have:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftABCEFG]
"HIJ"=hex(7):25,00,77,00,69,00,6E,00,64,00,69,00,72,00,
25,00,5C,00,73,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6D,00,33 ,00,32,00,5C,00,77,00,
62,00,65,00,6D,00,5C,00,63,00,69,00,6D,00,77,00,69 ,00,6E,00,33,00,32,00,
2E,00,6D,00,6F,00,66,00,00,00,25,00,77,00,69,00,6E,00,64,00,69,00,72,00,
25,00,5C,00,73,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6D,00,33 ,00,32,00,5C,00,77,00,
62,00,65,00,6D,00,5C,00,6E,00,63,00,70,00,72,00,6F ,00,76,00,2E,00,6D,00,
6F,00,66,00,00,00,00,00
Is it possible by some batch, script, command line...? (Please note, that two 0 values in red has to be deleted from the original string 1st.)
I am seeing some vague references to older Windows versions automatically backing up the registry at startup and saving the backup in some folder..
Any definite information about this in Windows 8, and where any such backups can be found? How and when is the Windows Registry backed up in Windows 8?
If Windows doesn't do it, could you recommend a tool that can do it in the background on a regular basis? I really don't trust myself with this anymore....
When I do a search of the registry, I get the following errors:
Failed to open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREClassesWow6432Nodeigfxdv32.CUIDriver while searching the Registry on Local Computer, Windows reported error code 2.

If I try to delete or modify any of these entries, they cannot be accessed through regedit but are available to PsExec.exe from System Internals. I haven't tried deleting these entries for obvious reasons since I do not know if they are essential or not.
I have messed up my computer I need to work on! Basically, I had a freeven pro virus which I have identified by some malware software and I have deleted the registry folders where my several viruses were located. In the process I also I disabled the SYSTEM to control my account (task manager?).
The effect is that the computer at start up shows weird signs instead of English (so I can't even identify troubleshoot- but by now I've tested all options anyways and there is no reaction) but also doesn't want to log in.
The windows key is on the system of the computer (how smart) and I have no access to original cd as im away. Can I automatically repair it somehow from boot or how do i put a windows on usb to repair the computer from it?
I read in another forum that you can stop Windows from adding "- Shortcut" to shortcuts by modifying the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerlink
To do so, you have to change the binary data from 1e 00 00 00 to 00 00 00 00.
I did this and it works great. I want to go a bit further, however.
Whenever I create shortcuts to files that have an extension (e.g. .txt) the shortcut ends up having the file extension as well.
I was wondering, is there any way to modify the same registry setting (or some other one) to also remove the extension for shortcuts?
Is there any way I can find out how to interpret registry binary data so I know what to change? How can I find out what each bit does?
Cannot install 8.1 update because of supposedly my system has Registry Mechanic installed. This program was unistalled and there's no trace of it even at the registry. At least is what I have search.
