How To Make Changes To Registry In Windows 8

Oct 29, 2012

I'm trying to remove the Homegroup from Windows Explorer. I was following the tutorial that I used for Windows 7 but it doesn't work. Any change I try to make to the registry is denied.

how do you make changes to the registry in Windows 8? Not being able to definitely makes it more secure but also impossible to customize.

Windows 8.1 Registry - HKLM Is Not Always The Same

Mar 12, 2014

New laptop which was recently upgraded from Windows 8 to 8.1

One issue might involve a registry edit so I began to look in the registry but I've noticed something odd when I run regedit. Each time I run it, what appears under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE (HKLM) is not always the same. (I was looking for Components under HKLM). Here's an example running it 10 times.

I run regedit and under HKLM see 7 entries

BCD00000000
Drivers
Hardware
Sam
Security
Software
System

Then I exit regedit (without making any changes) and run it again and see that Drivers has disappeared leaving the other 6 entries. Exit and run again I see the same 6 entries. I repeat the exit and run again process seeing the same 6 entries each time, but on the 7th run, Drivers reappears giving 7 entries again. On the next run a new entry, Components appears (between BCD00000000 and Drivers) giving 8 entries. Exit and run again, same 8 entries but then on the next run Drivers and Components both disappear leaving the other 6 entries.

I just run another 10 times or so and each time has 6 entries (no Drivers or Components)

Does Windows 8 Automatically Backup Registry

Jan 5, 2013

I am seeing some vague references to older Windows versions automatically backing up the registry at startup and saving the backup in some folder..

Any definite information about this in Windows 8, and where any such backups can be found? How and when is the Windows Registry backed up in Windows 8?

If Windows doesn't do it, could you recommend a tool that can do it in the background on a regular basis? I really don't trust myself with this anymore....

Unbootable Windows 8 - Repairing System With Damaged Registry

Feb 4, 2014

I have an unbootable Windows 8 system. I know that the System and Software hives are corrupt. I started the system with the Windows 8 install disc and tried to do a repair. I get to the point where the screen indicates, "Repairing disk errors. This may take over an hour to complete." However, the system continually reboots after the above message appears and repeats the process indefinitely.

Windows 8 Pro 64bit - Registry Entries Pointing To Wrong Folder?

Nov 19, 2012

I'm running Windows 8 pro 64bit on a self-build.

I was looking through the tabs of Autoruns and under the tab KnownDLLS it is showing that 3 DLL's loading via the Registry are not in the folders addressed - details are:

HKLMSystemCurrentControlSetControlSession ManagerKnownDlls

_Wow64 File not found: C:Windowssyswow64Wow64.dll
_Wow64cpu File not found: C:Windowssyswow64Wow64cpu.dll
_Wow64win File not found: C:Windowssyswow64Wow64win.dll

These DLL's can be found in C:windowssystem32.

I've looked at what Wow 64 does @ WoW64 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

why the Registry entries are pointing to the wrong folder?

Should I copy the Wow62 DLL's to C:Windowssyswow64 or change the Registry entries?

''Have a new HP Envy 15t-J100. Has a Recovery Partition. I created a Boot USB stick. Fine

I recall with other Windows versions & and such you could create a repair/rescue CD that basically allowed you to restore your settings to an earlier Registry Restore Point.

Will the Recovery Manager (on USB) do this as well?

How To Gain Access To Registry Stored On Dead Windows 8.1 Partition

Mar 20, 2014

I need to gain access to registry stored on dead Windows 8.1 partition (as mounted system volume backup). That means it's not directly bootable, I can only access it's file structure from outside. Now I'm curious if there's a software or procedure that can locate and load registry from it and display it in some exportable format like REGEDIT4.

Setup Installation :: Windows 8 - Registry Edit Required To Get Some Software To Work

May 12, 2014

One of our software providers has instructed us to make some changes to our Win 8 PC's registry to get the software to work properly. They have sent me details of what changes are required:

Open Windows Registry Editor (Regedit)
Right click HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT - click PERMISSIONS - click ADVANCED
Click/Check: REPLACE ALL CHILD OBJECT PERMISSION ENTRIES WITH INHERITABLE PERMISSION ENTRIES FROM THIS OBJECT
Double click the entries: USERS, CREATOR and ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES
For each entry:
TYPE: Select Allow Applies to: Select This key and subkeys
Click/Check: Full control and Read
Click OK on Entry detail screen
Click OK on Entries list screen

I know very little about Windows Registry other than not to touch it. These changes seem quite extreme.

If I try to delete or modify any of these entries, they cannot be accessed through regedit but are available to PsExec.exe from System Internals. I haven't tried deleting these entries for obvious reasons since I do not know if they are essential or not.

Registry Corrupt - How To Repair Win 8 From Boot

I have messed up my computer I need to work on! Basically, I had a freeven pro virus which I have identified by some malware software and I have deleted the registry folders where my several viruses were located. In the process I also I disabled the SYSTEM to control my account (task manager?).

The effect is that the computer at start up shows weird signs instead of English (so I can't even identify troubleshoot- but by now I've tested all options anyways and there is no reaction) but also doesn't want to log in.

The windows key is on the system of the computer (how smart) and I have no access to original cd as im away. Can I automatically repair it somehow from boot or how do i put a windows on usb to repair the computer from it?

Customizing Shortcuts By Modifying Registry

Sep 15, 2014

I read in another forum that you can stop Windows from adding "- Shortcut" to shortcuts by modifying the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerlink

To do so, you have to change the binary data from 1e 00 00 00 to 00 00 00 00.

I did this and it works great. I want to go a bit further, however.

Whenever I create shortcuts to files that have an extension (e.g. .txt) the shortcut ends up having the file extension as well.

I was wondering, is there any way to modify the same registry setting (or some other one) to also remove the extension for shortcuts?

Is there any way I can find out how to interpret registry binary data so I know what to change? How can I find out what each bit does?

Losing Permission To Registry Entries?

May 29, 2014

I support an older piece of software(vb) and am running into a lot of issues on windows 8 not seen on windows 7.

Our software installs some setting etc hkeylocalmachine >software>wow3264>our program>folders etc>>>

One of the issues is some machines seem to randomly lose their data values or revert to an older value(for example a data folder will switch from the network to the default location. Another example is a license code being deemed expired. Often a perfectly valid license will no longer be valid. The user is prompted to enter a code. If I enter a new code it still says expired. The fix ive used which is annoying is running the program as admin and applying the license code- Normally if the user then opens the program as the user after this it will work but they will again lose the value.

Always running as admin is not really a fix because then user cant see their printers or mapped drives in windows 8. And that is something I am not really supposed to support too often. They don't want me to be their tech support.

how this is happening, is it UAC? My guess is when the user installs it asks for admin, the users clicks ok and it installs. But then I dont understand why it works for a while and then quits.

Registry Settings - Display Won't Show

Aug 27, 2014

So basically the other day i was trying to improve my ping for gaming by using youtube and changing settings in there registry , after i had made the changes no effect had been taking so i attempted to revert what i had done . Instead i have clicked the back up file of the registry i had exported and added it into my registry thinking it would replace , instead it had been added or duplicated into my registry . As i had been warned , but being unfocused and reckless i had pressed ok . After i attempted to restart my laptop the display would not work . My laptop would turn on and the power button would be on and after the Asus start up message " Persistance , Perfection , Innovation , blah blah " the display would go from black to a lighter shade of black and keep flashing . IT doesn't make it to the welcome screen , i can see my cursor for 5 seconds on one of the shades until it flashes back and forth .

Hardware Drivers :: Delete USB Registry Key - How To Back It Up

Jun 10, 2014

So, I bought a new watercooler a corsair h100i (yay), before that I had a faulty h80i and replaced it. To make the system recognize the hardware I had to change some registries under

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetEnumUSBVID_1B1C&PID_0C04 there were two folders (which I believe were one for each USB entry in my mobo hence I connected the watercooler to both of them when testing.

But after I installed the h100i which uses the same software it didn't work, so I tried to delete older USB entries so maybe windows would detect the watercooler as new again, but it dind't work, so I used USBoblivion and nothing happened, so I decied to delete those folders, well I couldn't delete them but the folders are gone, so I can't edit that. Is there A way for me to back that up?

How does windows determines which format to use in printer definition? Is there a way to switch between formats?
