I saw few weeks back on the net a way to adjust windows border size without installing any tools or messing with registry, unfortunately I forgot to save the site, now I can't find it any longer. Where in Windows 8.1 I can adjust the border size?
View 8 RepliesI have the display set to extend, have the monitors set to the correct order, and the mouse moves easily across the two monitors. But I can't drag a windows from monitor 1 to monitor 2. I did remember to reduce the size of the window, but while it moves over to the side of monitor 1, it does not appear on monitor 2.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been messing with lubuntu and backtrack and decided to install Backtrack5 on my laptop(Lenovo N586). I couldn't boot into windows 8.1 after installing Backtrack5 R3, but I had no problem booting into backtrack(I think I made a mistake of installing backtrack bootloader in the same place where Windows bootloader was...). I was able to boot into windows 8.1 after fixing the windows bootloader, but this time I couldn't boot into backtrack5. I wanted to start fresh and uninstalled Backtrack5 using boot-repair-disk. And ever since I uninstalled the backtrack5, I cannot boot into anything unless I use live linux usb. I've literally tried almost everything I could find in the past a couple of days on the internet including the forum. It says my hard drive is locked and I don't really have any available options that actually work(like refresh, start up repair, diagnostic, reinstall, nothing works). Windows 7 recovery CD didn't work saying I am using different version of OS, so I should use different recovery CD.

My problem is with the languange preferences / keyboard layout :
I've got 3 systems which are US international keyboard and 1 system with an UK keyboard. All systems boot with US int. keyboard, when on the laptop i change to UK, all systems boot with UK. When then I change with both languages installed to US again, next reboot the laptop defaults to US.
Though I like synchronizing accounts, keyboard lay-out should be able to be opted out and be a local setting. I can't make it work properly with JUST UK on the laptop and US int on the other 3 systems.
I've had my windows 8 computer for audio production for about 3 months, as has been reasonably stable. However, lately, it just will seize when using Pro Tools 10, and the only solution is to restart. I've looked through the event log, and nothing particularly stands out, apart from the obvious unexpected shutdowns. I solved it previously by system restoring, but Windows being Windows has removed the restore point that I used last time, and so now I'm at a bit of a loss.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to build my windows 8.1 iso and reduce it with winreducer. What i did is:
1) Open sysprep (shift+f3) and installed office 2013 and other stuff
2) Generalized the image, captured the install.wim with dism and reduced it with winreducer
3) Created an autounattend.xml file to skip the oobe
Everything works fine, except from the system that keeps asking me for a serial, even if i have my ei.cfg file set up well. If i don't use the autounattend file, it doesn't ask me for a serial, but if i use it it does. Please note that the serial is the one for the activation, not for the installation.
Few days ago I have installed Windows 8, but found that there is no sound, windows can't detect audio card. I tried to find audio drivers for my card, but they don't work in Windows 8. But when I was trying to fix sound problem, I found that there is no administrative tools.

I've noticed that when booting to the Start Menu on powering up that there's now a white border around the top left tile. This border can be moved to any adjacent tile by using the relevant keyboard arrow keys.
My other PC's only show the border AFTER an arrow key is pressed which is classed as the correct default behaviour after a bit of Googling. I
I sometimes want to move my browser such that a playing video i(inside the browser) is sitting at the top-left of the screen, but I can only move the window until the title bar of the window is at the top of the screen. I can go to the bottom, but would prefer the top. Is it possible to move a window by holding the border, instead of resizing it?

I have had BSOD problems on and off since I got this machine, but recently, it only happens after running my Pro Tools software for a little while, usually about 10-15 minutes in (Pro Tools 11.2, but it also happened similarly with PT 9.0.6). The program slows, stutters and freezes, eventually going to a BSOD with the error IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL .
My "workaround" has been to use a different software solution (StudioOne), which seems to work flawlessly, but I would really like to use the more professional and expensive software that I own and paid really good money for.
I have tried several "fixes" such as running "sfc /scannow" several times along with the DISM command line repairs, always with errors unresolved. Attached is my SF file, zipped and renamed to my forum username.
I have just done a clean install of 8.1 on my old MacBook Pro as I broke the screen on my normal laptop. I could only afford to give 40GB to this new installation so I'm quite tight for space.
I've always used [URL] .... to check for disk usage but in my case it is not useful as it shows size of items not the size on disk. I have to keep my OneDrive files on-line only to save space but as they are reported as part of used disk space I am seeing 150% of my disk space is used which isn't useful really. In Disk Management I can see it is only 59%.
Any utility like WinDirStat that shows size on disk?
Since updating my HP Pavillion 64 bit to Windows 8.1, I have been unable to use an HDMI cable or reduce the computer brightness. I figured it would be a simple fix: restore to before the update, and wait for the bugs to be worked out. However, every time I attempt to access the control panel to perform a system restore, the entire OS freezes. Update: I tried to power on my computer just now to no avail. Stayed on the HP loading screen for 30 min.

Is there anyway I can redefine the values for the system volume and set the maximum to like... 10?
Any time I hit the volume buttons on my keyboard to lower the volume, it goes from 1 to 0 and I can't hear anything, so I hit the volume up button and it goes from 0 to 3 and it's way too loud.
Right now, I have the volume set to about 3 most of the time, with individual apps' volume controls set really low (like a game set to volume "0.5" out of 100).
This is just ridiculous. There must be a way to redefine the value for the system volume. Some settings file I can edit or something, if not a nice GUI method.
I have asus n550ja laptop with 8gb memory, the shared system memory is 1760mb, I usually don't play any games, there is no reason I can use that much graphic card memory. But because of the high shared memory, I cannot use all possible memory for virtual machine or ramdisk, when I use those, they can only maximum use about 6.5gb memory and cannot go higher. So I wonder is there a way I can reduce the intel graphic card shared system memory?

I used HP Pavilion G4-2216TU, 2Gb DDR3 RAM, Intel HD 4000, and Windows 8 Pro 32 bit, x64 processor.
The usable memory only 935 Mb, fewer than hardware-reserved that take 1,1 Gb of memory.
Is that normal ? that hardware-reserved took more memory rather than usable?
I've check the BIOS, no remapping setting that I can use for. can I remapping / reduce those hardware-reserved usage in such other way ?or how can i increase my usable memory close to installed RAM ?
I've not done any change or upgrade since I bought that new laptop, and its seem memory-load is too busy (I've check with the performance-monitor).

One issue might involve a registry edit so I began to look in the registry but I've noticed something odd when I run regedit. Each time I run it, what appears under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE (HKLM) is not always the same. (I was looking for Components under HKLM). Here's an example running it 10 times.
I run regedit and under HKLM see 7 entries
BCD00000000
Drivers
Hardware
Sam
Security
Software
System
Then I exit regedit (without making any changes) and run it again and see that Drivers has disappeared leaving the other 6 entries. Exit and run again I see the same 6 entries. I repeat the exit and run again process seeing the same 6 entries each time, but on the 7th run, Drivers reappears giving 7 entries again. On the next run a new entry, Components appears (between BCD00000000 and Drivers) giving 8 entries. Exit and run again, same 8 entries but then on the next run Drivers and Components both disappear leaving the other 6 entries.
I just run another 10 times or so and each time has 6 entries (no Drivers or Components)

I am seeing some vague references to older Windows versions automatically backing up the registry at startup and saving the backup in some folder..

I get to the point where the screen indicates, "Repairing disk errors. This may take over an hour to complete." I need to gain access to registry stored on dead Windows 8.1 partition (as mounted system volume backup). That means it's not directly bootable, I can only access it's file structure from outside. Now I'm curious if there's a software or procedure that can locate and load registry from it and display it in some exportable format like REGEDIT4.
