Setup Installation :: Windows 8 - Registry Edit Required To Get Some Software To Work

May 12, 2014

One of our software providers has instructed us to make some changes to our Win 8 PC's registry to get the software to work properly. They have sent me details of what changes are required:

Open Windows Registry Editor (Regedit)
Right click HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT - click PERMISSIONS - click ADVANCED
Click/Check: REPLACE ALL CHILD OBJECT PERMISSION ENTRIES WITH INHERITABLE PERMISSION ENTRIES FROM THIS OBJECT
Double click the entries: USERS, CREATOR and ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES
For each entry:
TYPE: Select Allow Applies to: Select This key and subkeys
Click/Check: Full control and Read
Click OK on Entry detail screen
Click OK on Entries list screen

I know very little about Windows Registry other than not to touch it. These changes seem quite extreme.

Setup Installation :: Windows 8 - Unable To Open The Required File?

Aug 27, 2012

I just downloaded windows 8 prof from my msdn, and I made a bootable usb stick with WintoFlash and now when I am trying to install I get this message: Windows cannot open the required file D:/Sources/install.wim. The file may be corrupt or missing. Make sure all files required for installation are available, Error code: 0x80070570. I have looked into the usb stick but install.wim is just there. And I did a disk chek in wintoflash and it found this:

Found problems with source files.

Can't find file D:sourcesoot.wim

Can't find file D:sourcesidwbinfo.txt

Can't find file D:ootmgr

Can't find folder D:oot

Can't find file D:sourcesinstall.wim or file D:sourcesinstall.swm

Setup Installation :: Windows 8 Cannot Install Required Files Error 0x8007025d

Dec 27, 2012

I bought a new SSD and want to do a clean install on it, however am having problems during the install process and receive the following message:

Windows 8 cannot install required files. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation. Error code: 0x8007025d
The install images was downloaded from the Microsoft website and I have tried using a USB thumb drive and DVD install disc and both receive the same error. I have used the DVD disc when I originally installed Windows 8 Pro on the same desktop but on an IDE harddrive and believe the disc should still work (i.e. no scratches on it).

Here's how I prepared to install:

1. Unplugged all harddrives except for brand new SSD (Crucial M4 128 GB SSD)
2. Changed bios settings to AHCI (before was on IDE) (using Asus P5k-V motherboard)

I'm not sure what's going on if the harddrive is corrupt, the bios settings need to be tweaked, the drive is incompatible with my motherboard or something else.

I don't want to go back to using the IDE drive to boot windows but rather use the new SSD.

Setup Installation :: Reinstalling Windows 8 From USB - Unable To Reset PC / Required Partition Missing

Apr 13, 2014

I recently purchased an Asus X551 laptop with Windows 8 but straight the way uninstalled Windows 8 and installed Ubuntu (after creating a Windows 8 recovery drive just in case). I have since decided that I want Windows 8 back as I have found that I cannot use a lot of software on Linux. The laptop did not come with any form of recovery disk or installation disk, the only reminent of Windows 8 I have is the recovery USB that I created from within the OS.

When I plug in the USB and boot from it it brings up the recovery menu with options to reset the PC but when I click it it says something like - "Unable to reset PC. A required partition is missing".

Setup Installation :: ASUS VivoBook X200CA / Windows 8.1 Reset - Required Partition Is Missing

Jun 1, 2014

I have an ASUS VivoBook X200CA that is running a Windows 8.1 Upgrade. For about 5 months, this laptop has been running perfectly without any problems and I have managed to reset the computer many times due to certain errors and problems that have arisen from software and hardware compatibility.

Recently, I went to reset my laptop, it restarted and then it took me to the WinRE screen. I went into Troubleshooting > Advanced Options and I clicked on the Reset option. It then took me through each of the various warnings and making sure that my data was backed up and then, once I had clicked on the "Reset" button, it hung for a bit and then said "Reset has failed - Required Partition is Missing".

"Unable to reset your pc a required partition is missing".

I think I have a problem about partitions type because Ubuntu uses ext4.

Setup Installation :: Required CD / DVD Drive Device Driver Is Missing

Sep 15, 2011

I am trying to install the new develp build of Windows 8 (x86) on my asus eeepc 1005pe. This is a netbook which doesnt even have a cd/dvd drive.

So anyway, I extracted the iso on a bootable usb flash drive. I boot, and when I click install it just hangs for about 10 minutes and then it gives me this error:

I tried setting the bios from AHCI to IDE. This does not work, I even get a bluescreen of death when I boot up in the current win7 sp1 install. But anyway on google I read a lot about this problem and one of the solutions is to put it on AHCI.. but not for me as it was already on AHCI. Anyway IDE is not workin either.

Just recently I installed win7sp1 on this netbook without a problem. I checked the sha1 hashes of the Windows 8 ISO and they are confirmed, so that is not the problem either.

Setup Installation :: Can't Get AHCI To Work - Windows 8

Feb 3, 2013

I just can't seem to get windows 8 to install/use the ahci controller - some specifics:

- new system
- clean windows 8 install (non-pro)
- one new ssd drive and one new hybrid drive, latest firmware flashed
- windows 8 installed on ssd (samsung 120gb)
- bios set to ahci+raid
- bios version current
- installed Windows 8 without pre-installing latest storage drivers during setup, ahci not recognized in device manager
- reinstalled Windows 8 using latest pre-installed drivers during setup, ahci still not recognized in device manager

Spent a lot of time researching this issue and none of the suggestions i've come across seem to work, including registry hacks. regardless of what i do Windows 8 just won't recognize my drives as ahci mode - ahci mode is setup in bios but Windows 8 still loads the ide drivers which can be seen in device manager under ata/atapi controllers. Why won't windows 8 recognize the bios ahci setting?

chipset - intel pch-c206
hp z1 server
latest bio update installed
cpu - e-1245
ssd (120gb) - operating system
hybrid drive (500gb) - storage
memory - 16gb

Setup Installation :: Can't Get DVD ISO To Work With Both Home And Professional

Feb 12, 2014

I thought I would look at creating/using my own media.

I have been using VMs for testing these, so much better than playing with someone's PC

I have ISOs for both 8.0 and 8.1 which I downloaded using Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 ISO - Download or Create. The licence key I used for the download was my legitimate one that I purchased from Microsoft (so it wasn't OEM), it is actually an upgrade key from Windows 7 for Win 8 Pro. I can install these ISOs no problem but they always install the Pro version and I never get an option for installing Home.

I tried putting a ei.cfg file in the sources directory containing
[EditionID]
[Channel]
Retail
[VL]
0

But this just allows me to install without the key. I tried putting both "Core" and "Home" in as an EditionID but the install process fails saying "The product key entered does no match any of the Windows images available for installation. Enter a different product key"

If I try using the downloaded iso without the ei.cfg file but instead use the generic key for Home I get the same message.

So I'm pretty sure the downloads I got from MS just contain Pro. Is this right or is there a special way of making Home available? Based upon what I have seen in the forums I would also probably need "Home Single Language" to be available as well (if possible).

In case it makes any difference the ISOs I have always set their language to English (United Kingdom) during the install.

Setup Installation :: Getting Dual Boot To Work?

Laptop came with Windows 8 and has been updated to 8.1

Installed Ubuntu on a new partition, but no matter how many times I try, I can't get the machine to load Grub at power-on. If I boot Super Grub Disk/Rescatux, I see the installed Ubuntu, but other tools (like EasyBCD) only see Windows.

Apparently, we're no longer using MBR? Everything I used to know about computers seems to have become false in the last year or 2. How do I get Grub working on this new EFI thing?

Setup Installation :: Will Win 8.0 Key Work On Clean Install Of Win 8.1

May 2, 2014

I purchased a Lenovo Y510P laptop over a month ago which came with Windows 8.0. and I hated it from the get go. I was aware that 8.1 was available as a free download so I downloaded and installed it. All of these updates seem to have bogged down my system. When I click on what I am assuming is the new start button (the white house icon in the taskbar) it takes 6-10 seconds for the menu to appear .

I dug out the key with Belarc advisor and went to MS's site to download an ISO of 8.1 but it told me that it would not let me download the 8.1 ISO since my key was for 8.0. If I were able to get my hands on a 8.1 disc would I be able to use my 8.0 key to do a clean install of 8.1? It is so disappointing to have purchased such a powerful laptop and have it bogged down by so many updates as well as all of the bloatware that came preinstalled on it.

Setup Installation :: 8.1 Upgrades Says Won't Work With Pentium 4 Prescott 630

Oct 18, 2013

I went to update my father's old PC to 8.1 and I get the message that his CPU is not supported. That you need the combination of SSE2+NX+PAE.

He has a Intel Pentium 4 Prescott 630 3GHz. I looked it up and it should qualify for the upgrade. I ran CPUID and it says it has the SSE instructions (says MMX, SSE (1, 2, 3), EM64T).

I'm pretty sure it supports PAE (how do I check that???).

And in the BIOS, the Execute Disable Bit is turned ON (this is Intel's equivalent to NX?).

Is there any way to bypass this check and install the OS?

Hardware Drivers :: A Reboot Is Required To Complete Device Installation

Jan 27, 2014

I have a windows 8 laptop and a linux desktop, both connected to the same screen using hdmi - since my screen has only 1 HDMI input, I use an HDMI splitter.

Every time I move from the linux to the windows 8 laptop (using a HDMI mini remote control), I get a message from windows saying that in order to apply these changes I need to reboot.

Note that I also use the same wireless keyboard and mouse for both computers - each time I change from one computer to the other, I unplug the USB that controls them and plug it in the computer I will use.

I think that the problem is related to the HDMI, not the keyboard/mouse usb - but I am not sure.

Needless to say that it is very annoying and I cant keep restarting the LT each time I move from one to the other.

I checked event viewer to see what causes this and these are the relevant messages:

1 - Device 'USBVID_045E&PID_0745&MI_017&1a5cec9a&0&0001' requires installation.

how I can fix this, make it stop requesting reboots?

Also I have done a full clean install with windows 8 and the same issue has occured a couple of days later.

I have a feeling its the hard drive going bad but how can i be sure? Some hard drive utilities have reported "end to end error - fail" but others have said there is no issues.

Windows 8.1 No Longer Allows To Do OEM Recovery - Required Partition Missing

Mar 17, 2014

I have an i7 ASUS Ultrabook (HDD is 2xssd in raid0, UEFI, GPT partitions.) which is great but have an issue where wifi profiles don't retain and i'm not too concerned about retaining the data on the ultrabook so after attempting to fix the wifi profiles not saving (Have been through the driver scenario, folder permissions, sfc, etc and no joy) i'm just going to do a clean install from the recovery partition.

I started by trying the recovery methods 8 has built in, refresh the files, but fails without an error and makes no changes. Attempted to do a full restore via 8 recovery also but fails with no error also and then I realized I was actually missing the OEM options (F9 during boot doesn't allow for EMS boot to begin recovery from recovery partition like expected, just boots into normal recovery).

After installing windows 8.1 it no longer allows me to do an OEM recovery via Windows 8.1's built in recovery methods so I created a recovery USB from the recovery partition using the windows 8 tool since the AI Recovery Burner doesn't recognize the partition, the USB recovery creation did recognize the partition and allow me to create the USB recovery drive from this successfully.

When running the USB recovery, the recovery fails with "Required drive partition is missing"

I think this is because the recovery partition is actually a windows 8 partition, not 8.1, and will not work.

Seems like a lot of effort but I want to retain the OEM key and software set (because it's surprisingly not a piece of trash) so was thinking if I install windows 8 (I have an ISO and another key) over the existing 8.1 partition it may actually allow me to then do the normal recovery.

Since the recovery drive did not work I decided to clone the recovery partition and have the WIM file now, although since cloning the partition when running recovery I no longer have the option to create a recovery drive using the recovery partition, the partitions no longer show as recovery partitions in disk management but instead as OEM partitions (Not sure why this changed.)

The recovery xml configuration for REAGENTC does have the correct GUID's and offsets for the partitions although when running this in elevated cmd it results in error 3 unable to run.

Am I able to create a base recovery drive from another windows 8.1 pc and use the WIM file?

Any way to tell what partition table my created recovery drive is expecting so I can adjust the current partitions to match and perform the recovery? When I try to refresh the files from this recovery I get the error "Windows system is locked" which is why I went for the full recovery.

Browsers/Mail :: Windows 8 - Certain Websites Don't Load - Restart Required

Jun 11, 2013

When I start my computer (which is running win 8), yahoo messenger won't sign in, and certain websites won't load for me for about 10-15 minutes. So it's just for certain websites, and the yahoo messenger client. Skype and 90% of the websites load with no problems whatsoever. And it only happens after i turn on my machine, or after a restart.

The problem persists no matter what browsers i use. When i ping those websites, I get replies from them, everything looks just fine, but they just won't load. After 10-15 minutes, they just fire up, all at once and i get no problems whatsoever. It's not a problem with the internet connection, as I got another windows running machine, an iPad, and my gf's Mac, and none of them are experiencing this issue. Plus, it also happens when i'm using any other network from a different location.

I have flushed my dns, and have run antivirus solutions like dr. web, combofix and malwarebyes anti-malware, and still no joy. My windows updates are up to date.. Do you need any other info for a diagnostic?

Asus UX31A With Windows 8 Enterprise VL - Restart Required After Sleeping

After logging in, I get this window (see below; I had to remove a couple things I don't know if I can show). If I follow its directions, I restart and go about life until I put the system to sleep again in which the process repeats. As I write this I'm finishing a bunch of updates so perhaps that has something to do with it (I have a lot of Office and SP1 for SQL Server that I've been putting off along with a healthy swath of optional OS updates).

Windows 8 On Asus Laptop - Required Device Isn't Connected Or Can't Be Accessed

Aug 17, 2014

I am running Windows 8 on an Asus laptop. Two days ago it was doing updates and restarting. It did this 3 times, and on the third restart I received the blue error screen. It stated

"Recovery. Your pc needs to be repaired. A required device isn't connected or can't be accessed. Error code: 0xc0000225

You'll need to use the recovery tools on your installation media. If you don't have any installation media [like a disc or usb device] contact your system administrator or Pc manufacturer."

It gives me three options at the bottom [press enter to try again, press f8 for startup settings, press esc for uefi firmware settings]. If I press enter I get the same screen just with a bit more text. f8 does nothing. Uefi takes me to the boot menu. I have been trying to boot from a dvd r with a flash operating system in order to recover my data before it is reformatted. However, it does not seem to recognize the disc. When I select to boot from dvd rom, it tries, then on the black screen appears text saying restart and select boot device or install boot media and press a key. I tried taking disc out and putting bavk in, then pressing a key, nothing, same message.

Can't Edit Files In Windows Apps Folder?

Nov 6, 2013

There was a Metro app that I installed that I liked the functionality of but didn't like the fonts for; I knew where the configuration was to change the appearance (a CSS file in the C:Program FilesWindowsApps<app name> directory),

but when I tried to modify the file, it kept giving me an "Access is denied." error without any extra information.

I tried changing the ownership of the apps folder to my own account; didn't work. Changed the ownership of that specific file, and all the other files within that folder; still not allowed. I went into the PowerShell as administrator and tried copying or renaming the file; still "Access is denied." and nothing else.

Is there a way to make this file editable, or is the access blocked on a system level? I just want to change a few fonts around, but if Microsoft is trying to prevent me from doing so in order to protect its walled garden, then I'm afraid I'm going to have to give up on Windows 8.
