View 7 RepliesRecently my mom visited a website that tricked her. She downloaded and installed some stuff she didn't need. I removed the stuff but noticed some other problems. I'm not sure if these are new problems caused by the useless stuff she installed.
Control Panel -> Programs -> Programs and Features is not showing all installed programs. Oddly, the only listed installed programs have names that start with the letter M. 14 programs are listed. See picture. Start Menu -> All Programs -> I suspect some programs are missing. I have a Win 7 style Start menu because I am using IObit's Start Menu 8 program. Control Panel -> System and Security -> Administrative Tools was empty. I fixed that by using SFC /SCANNOW.
I tried using System Restore to go back to an earlier date, but that didn't work. In the process of trying to do that I discovered that BitDefender Internet Security 2014 doesn't get along with Windows 8.1's System Restore feature. I uninstalled BitDefender and successfully went back to an earlier date but still had the same problems with missing programs. I undid the restore. I created a new Windows user account. The new account had the same issues: missing programs in the Start menu and Programs and Features menu.
On Windows 8.1, when I open Programs and Features in Control Panel, it does not show all of my installed programs. I am trying to remove some programs and they are not listed.

View 5 Replies View RelatedAfter updating my GPU driver (and I think, it failed) this red tint appeared It's only at the bottom though, it doesn't affect the whole screen.
It appears at startup and everywhere. It doesn't appear in an external monitor.
I have two graphics cards: Intel HD Graphics 4000 and NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M The NVIDIA is the one I updated recently.
I also tried reinstalling the NVIDIA driver but I don't know if I reinstalled it properly.
Yeah it's a laptop. A Samsung laptop.
Anyway, is this hardware related or software related? Maybe the failed installation is just a coincidence. I also have problems of ants entering my laptop so maybe they messed up the inside.
One month ago, I installed Windows 8 with media center pack in HP Pavilion DV 2519tu Laptop. At the beginning it was running fine. But from last 10 days, the Key options at the bottom of welcome screen has not shown. What i think it may be due to some wrong software
View 3 Replies View RelatedThe icons on the taskbar at the bottom of my screen become distorted. They'll generate copies of themselves, overlap other icons, and the start menu button disappears. Whenever I try to click an icon, it opens the icon to its left, as if the mouse needs to be calibrated. When I open the start menu, every time I scroll my mouse across a shortcut, it disappears. Poof. Just like that. I scroll my mouse over the icons a few more times, and usually, they'll come back, but if I scroll again, they disappear once more. Thus, I'm not able to open any programs from the start menu. Additionally, my background (which I normally have cycling through a folder of wallpapers) goes completely black.
This happens without warning; sometimes I'm playing video games and it happens when I alt-tab, sometimes I'm browsing the internet and it happens randomly, once I was just looking at my screen without running any programs or tasks and it happened. It will fix itself anywhere from a span of 2 minutes to half an hour.
The taskbar at the bottom of my screen is unresponsive for the last week, despite the fact that I've shut down and restarted my pc many times. It is extremely annoying to switch between windows without the use of the taskbar; I need to go back to the desktop and click from there. I'm using Windows 8.1.
View 1 Replies View RelatedThis just randomly happened today while I was moving around files on an external drive. This is what the first few rows of icons should look like, but it's like everything under the word "Start" was moved down and partially off the screen. I don't know how to get it back, or which process to attempt restarting (is the Start screen handled by the explorer.exe process?). Also, the right - click menu (which is usually on the bottom) is completely hidden, so I can't use any of that functionality.
View 2 Replies View RelatedSeen this on the start screen my live tiles on the top row and the bottom row gets cut off
Take a look here : [URL] ....
I can resolve it by resizing a tile but it cuts off again when i move a tile. Its obviously a bug if you take a look at both screenshots side by side.
I'm running Windows 8 and IE 10. At the bottom of my browser screen I continually get this pop-up message:
do you want to open or save get.js (1.45KB) from media.fastclick.net?
Obviously I do not want to install this tracking (cookie) software. How do I get rid of the pop-up question?
I built my PC from scratch on Friday 18th April. On the evening of 21st April I turned my PC on and saw a USB error popping up in a yellow box on the bottom right of my screen. This error was popping up every 5 se conds without fail.
I tried to uninstall the drivers for all USB ports and reinstall but this didn't work. Instead I inspected the error from my Device Manager and read this:
"Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43) A request for the USB device descriptor failed." ((Port_#0011.Hub_#0003)) My USB devices
I have a Gigabyte H87 3HD Motherboard, a Nvidia GTX 760 graphics card, Intel i5 4440 Quad core processor, EVGA 650w Power Supply. I have Windows 8.1 64-bit as an OS.
With all my USB devices plugged in or without ANY plugged in, the error still pops up regardless. This leads me to believe it could be a problem with the motherboard itself.
I have tried the following solutions:
On and Off againUpdated BIOS to F6 VersionUpdated Windows 8.1Updated Chipset + all DriversWindows Hot FixesUsing CMD and NetMon to asses the USB portsSystem restore
I even right clicked on the error on the Device Manager, uninstalled and the error was still pinging up. Is my computer haunted? None of these have worked. I feel like I have exhausted all my options hence why I have named the thread as such.
When modern Apps are closed, they can be made to close to the Start Screen. Is there a way of making Desktop programs do the same. For example: Firefox, my word processor etc.?

Always keep a list of disabled services as you disable them! I spent a dramatic amount of time referencing 2-3 resources for each service I disabled and have had no issues up until now. I disabled a few in a row without restarting and managed to forget which they were. this has caused two issues If I can't/don't - the end result will be me having to reset them all to default, go through them one by one again - AND STILL not know which was the one(s) that caused my problem(s) which will risk the same thing happening again.
1) I set an account picture to my Microsoft.net account for windows 8.1x64 (the one that pops up when you turn on your PC and have to enter your password right after the lock screen but before windows) and after a restart, it disappears and goes back to the default grey square with a white outline of an avatar)
2) all my installed programs disappeared on the start screen! It's literally blank. I didn't have much due to it being a fairly new install but they all disappeared including PC settings and metro store (the two metro apps I had left). I checked if the apps still worked (mumble for example because it also disappeared) and they did, but if you go under program data/start menu/programs etc, all the folders with the app shortcuts in them are gone!
I tried to reinstall mumble; and it reinstalled fine, but still NO folder w shortcut being placed in the start menu therefore nothing being put on the start/apps screen. What on earth could be doing this service wise?
I just got Windows 8 and tried disabling the log-in screen. I went into "netplwiz" now I seem to have lost my administrative powers.
I can't download programs or access the "user accounts" tab in the control panel. Every time I try to do something that would require admin powers, I get a "user account control" prompt that tells me that if I, "want to allow the following programs to make changes to this computer," that I need to enter an administrator password and then click yes.
But there is no text box to enter a password and the "yes" button is grayed out. My only option is to hit "no" or "show details."
When I go into "PC Settings" and the "users" tab, it says that "there are no other users on this PC" and "Sign in as an administrator to add users to this PC." But how do I do that?
I've tried going into the "run" operation and entered "net user administrator /active:yes" command, but nothing happens. I also tried entering "msconfig" but I ran into the same problem of not having admin powers to do that. I tried starting in safe mode by jamming shift and F8 but that didn't work either.
When I play games or use any sort of full screen program, it refuse to stay in full screen and flickers to the desktop after a 10-30 minute period...I'm aware this is probably another program trying to take control, but I can't seem to pin it down. I've tried disabling startup programs through task manager and I've also tried ending background process, with no success.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI would like to run all my programs directly from the start screen, not switching to desktop view. My friend has Windows 8 and he is running everything directly from start screen mode. I have Win 8.1 and I don't want to go to the desktop mode since then programs run under desktop and loose the functions available in start screen mode.

It didn't say that when I first did it!
Extracting features from 'WindowsWinSXS' or 'DVDSourceSXS' I have some plans for doing this but they are not successful till now.
So my question is: Is there any possibility for creation of some tool or guide, with which can I be able for example to extract one full feature from Windows 7 or Windows 8 and add to another build or another SKU and similar relations.
My idea comes directly from that what I want to install Internet Explorer 10 RTM on Release Preview. I think that if I successfully rip of all files connected with IE10 from Win8 RTM and put them in one folder. After with some modding in manifest files and using of 'dism /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:C:specifid IE10rtm folder' switch to integrate in Release Preview.
In Windows8 sl-SI, I have no option Add features to Windows. I think it is locked. Is it possible to unlock this feature?

Stuck on this loading screen and I can't get out! What do I do?!
In the control panel, under System and Security, there is a section called "Add features to Windows 8". It then asks if I want to let Windows 8 take over my computer.

I'm thinking about installing Windows 8.1 and keep it until a activation method comes out, so i would like to know the possible consequences of doing so.
I put Windows 8 back on yesterday, and the build number was not on the bottom right.
However, today I installed Media Center, and now I see Windows 8 Pro with Media Center Build 9200. Why did this all of a sudden appear? How do I remove it?
I have just bought a Asus t100 tablet for my parents. I need to know a couple things:
I would like to have the taskbar down the bottom at all times. When I goto chrome app the taskbar is gone.
Can I have the chrome app into a window so I can easily just close it?
I know you can just swipe it but my parents are used to the window style.
Just like the title says, when I'm in the control panel I clicked on the Turn Windows Features on and off. A pop up menu comes up but it's blank. It used to have a list of items with a check box next to them. I searched the internet and can't come up with anything. I waited a while for the menu to pop but no list came up after a half hour.
