Start Menu / App Right Click Menu Not Working
May 22, 2014Im referring to this bottom menu; when I right click my app/programs, nothing pops up below. I also cant rearrange tiles, groups and stuff.

Get Context Menu On Right Click For Start Screen?
Aug 21, 2012I pinned an application to my start menu, occasionally I need to run that app with Admin privs. All I can find in the Start Screen is the "Run As Admin" option that appears at the bottom of the screen.
It's a real pain to have to click the app near the top of the screen and then slide all of the way to the bottom for "run as admin"..aside from pinning it to taskbar in Desktop (whch is probably where it belongs anyway)?

Mar 30, 2014I've recently purchased a new laptop with Windows 8.1 pre-installed. First question is how do i enable a confirm window to pop up when deleting something? I don't like how i can just hit delete and it moves it (Only to the recycle bin, but i'd rather it didn't).
Secondly how do i stop the start menu from switching to that Windows 8 menu view? I did originally change it so that when you click the start menu (Bottom left in) it would actually bring up the start menu, but it seems to have reverted. On top of this how do i change it so that pressing the Windows button brings up the start menu rather than the Windows 8 menu view thing?
Thirdly how do i enable file details when in Windows Explorer. So in Windows 7 when you select a file it would give the size, name, author, date last edited etc in the details pane. How do i get that now?
Finally, how do i change my task bars transparency?
How To Make Task Menu Launch From Start Menu
Jun 14, 2013When you launch skype from the startmenu it is a huge square, when i launch task manager from the startmenu it is launched to the desktop.
Could there be a way to make the task menu launch from the startmenu to be a big square like skype is "phone eddition"
This would be useful because when im in games and the game freezes, i can bring up the start menu like SUPER FAST and it is visible but when i launch the task manager it is behind the game no matter what, so im always pressing the key stroke of the first letter of the game and pressing delete to see if i closed the game or not.
Change Menu Background Color In Win 8.1? NOT Start Menu
Jun 22, 2014I actually have no problem with the Win 8.1 Start menu, but the colors of the regular desktop environment are killing me. Namely, the weird, off-off white of the menus. The High-Contrast White option under Personalization gives me the right color for the menu backgrounds but everything else about the theme screams windows 3.1, so I'd rather not resort to using that.
Is there maybe a registry tweak that I can use to change this one little color? I've tried a few things but nothing so far has worked.

8.1 - Add To Start Menu Not Working
Jul 1, 2013My problem is that I can't add programs to Start Menu teh way I used to do it, with right click, context menu and Add to Start Menu. It is still there in the context menu, but it doesn't work.
Apart from that, in 8.1 when I install a new program, it won't put a tile in the Start Menu by default. I need to do it manually by looking for the program in the list and righ-click-add-to-start-menu, but again, it not always works.
Search Is Not Working Between Files And In Start Menu
May 7, 2014Since I turned on a new computer, SEARCH function is not working anywhere.
I can't enter the search mode in Explorer (CTRL+F or WIN+F does simply nothing) and when I go to Start menu screen and start typing, nothing happens. When I'm in Start menu and go to search it gives me no results no matter what I type - it just says: This app can't be searched. (as you can see below).

Apr 9, 2014I installed the new Windows 8.1 Service Package 1 update earlier today. I was loving it. They finally got to addressing how bad Windows 8 was for laptops. However, the new context menu in the Start Screen simply does not appear anymore. It was earlier, and I have made no significant changes to the system in that time. When I right-click on a tile now, the only thing that happens is that it gets highlighted. No context menu to speak of. In addition, I can't get a context menu for the "Apps" section either.

Jul 1, 2013I've been dabbling with Windows 8.1 a little bit, and noticed something missing from it--at least, it's missing on my computer. I'd like to know if I am the only person experiencing this.
The problem is quite simple: The right-click menu for the Explorer taskbar icon has disappeared, and it doesn't let me close my open Explorer windows.
I have desktop shortcut icons for the C drive, and two external drives. Also, I have a shortcut icon for my USB flash drive, which I usually keep plugged in for backup.
I can have several Explorer windows open by clicking these icons. They appear stacked in the taskbar. (See diagram below.) If I have only one Explorer window open, the menu will have a Close Window option. If two or more windows are open, it will say Close All Windows.
This menu, and these options, seem to have disappeared with Windows 8.1 Preview.

Oct 19, 2013I just updated my computer from Windows 8 to 8.1 (via Store), and my computer is working fine except for the right-click menu on the Desktop, that is taking forever to load.
First I thought it was some problematic shell extension (specially because Intel Graphics Control Panel was also updated, and the new version had icons along to the options). So I run ShellExView and disabled the mentioned extension, but the problem was still there after I restarted my computer.
Weird thing is that the problem only occurs when I click on a "empty" place on the Desktop, but clicking on icons on the desktop, or wherever else is OK. It's also weird that it occurs both when I'm on the Desktop or when I'm on File Explorer, accessing C:users*username*desktop (it's also weird that, when I'm using File Explorer, sometimes, some desktop icons, such as my shortcuts and folders, disappear).
I am adding some screenshots with the shell extensions found.
Right Click Options Menu - Open Edit Print Missing
Feb 21, 2014So recently I was switching my desktop background repeatedly, trying out a few images because i wanted to change it. I had been using the right click menu on images, using the available option to 'set as desktop background'. Then, for no apparent reason that option dissapeared, along with the bolded 'open', 'edit', and 'print' options. not only that, but it seems to have slightly rearranged the menu as well as added a few new 'options' that do absolutely nothing when i try to use them.
Preview, rotate right, and rotate left do nothing whatsoever. Open would have opened it in an image viewer i downloaded and set to default, and edit would have opened it in Paint. Images aren't the only things affected. it seems to have happened to .txt files and video files, except the preview and rotate options don't appear.
I can still double click to open these files in their default programs, and use the newly bolded 'open with' drop-down menu to open image sin paint, but it would be nice to have my normal options back.

Power User Menu (WIN-X) Not Working?
Nov 11, 2012When invoking the Power User Menu, no shortcut will work except the "Run" command. This has been this way since I upgraded my Win 7 to Win 8. The short cuts do exist in the appropriate $user$/Appdata/.../WinX subfolder, but the menu doesn't seem to connect to them..
Yes, I tried using the Power User Menu Editor suggested in the tutorials, but to no avail.
As another bit of info...When I upgraded from 7, I was using the program Start Menu X (paid version) as a Start Menu replacement. As I liked the Win 8 Start Screen from using the previews for many months, I uninstalled Start Menu X. My guess this may have affected the Power User Menu in some fundamental way, as I was not able to use said menu when a third party start menu replacement was in effect.
Windows 8.1 Apps Won't Start From Start Menu
Feb 10, 20143 days before my Windows 8.1 pc wasn't working during log in it showed up with "The System Event Notification Service service failed the sign in."
I posted this thread but no one replied then back yesterday I ran it into Safe Mode and used the CMD and put these "sfc/scannow" then the PC booted into Safe Mode.
But in my Start Menu many apps won't open accept Facebook, Twitter, Photos and the Store opens, and when I goto install apps it shows "This app wasn't installed"

Run Shortcuts That Are Under Start Menu
Oct 29, 2013I've installed some software that runs on the Desktop. On Windows earlier than 8, it installs some shortcuts in its part of the start menu that run various configuration programs. When you want to reconfigure the software you click the start menu, find the entry/folder for the software then click the shortcut for the required configuration program.
But these shortcuts do not actually run an exe file. Looking at their properties, their targets are actually of the form (for example):
C:WindowsSysWOW64
undll32.exe "C:WindowsSysWOW64ff_vfw.dll",configureVFW
and the shortcut name is simply "VFW configuration".
On Windows 8 of course there is no start menu. So what is the easiest way I can run these shortcuts in Windows 8 ?

Mar 16, 2013My Start Menu or whatever it's now called on the bottom left corner of the desktop disappeared. I'm not sure if it was accidentally unpinned but I've tried and can't seem to find a way to add it back to my taskbar.

Windows 8 - Bottom Right Corner Menu Not Working?
Aug 26, 2013About two weeks ago when I right-clicked in the bottom-left corner there would be a menu that would pop up. Now it just moves my mouse a little bit and dosen't do anything.
This menu was really useful...It held things like My Computer, Run, Command Prompt etc.
I updated to the windows 8.1 preview but it was working when I did that. about a week after I got the preview it did this.

For an example: On Windows 7 when I installed Steam on my second hard drive, the Steam exe popped up when I searched "Steam" in the start menu search. When I went to Windows 8, it doesn't do this anymore because I didn't reinstall Steam because it's already on my second hard drive. How do I get it to pop back up in the search?
