In many programs there are keyboard shortcuts . They are shown as capital letters with a line underneath. How does one use them? I've tried the letter with control key, shift key and alt key and frequently combinations of them but cant get any response.
View 2 RepliesI just upgraded Win 8 on my Acer Iconia W3 Tablet (x86) to Windows 8.1. But now I have the problem that in the settings-app and in the righten menu (e.g. the search-function) every text is just a white (or sometimes black) box. In other Apps and on the desktop-applications the text is displayed correctly; and before I have installed Windows 8.1 everything was fine too. Below are two screenshots which should describe the problem.

I am finding that Windows 8 shortcuts are overriding shortcuts I use in some applications, and I would like to be able to delete or reassign the system shortcut so I can use it in an application. However, while there is a myriad of posts on different people's ideas of "essential" keyboard shortcuts, I can find no information on how to change shortcuts.

View 1 Replies View RelatedRegularly, when using keyboard shortcuts a Keyboard Shortcuts panel appears automatically. I can't find a way to close the panel out.
The only way I can close it is to shut the computer down.
Is there a way to open the panel, manually, if needed, and then close it?
If not, is there a way to prevent the panel from appearing at all?
Edit: The panel is displayed every time I use a keyboard shortcut.
Solved: To make the panel hide, press Ctrl + Shift + Alt + Right-cursor-key.
This is weird, occasionally as I open up firefox and go to enter text into any field I notice that I am unable to type. Instead what happens is if I hit a key such as F which is linked to a windows shortcut for files, the files search menu pops up even though i never pressed the windows key at any time. This problem isn't just limited to firefox, once it is started I have a very hard time getting it to being able to type normally. So if there is no shortcut linked to that key, there is no input otherwise i get the shortcuts (H - share, Q - search, etc). Restarting doesn't always work, sometimes all it takes is excessive clicking of a search bar, other times just closing an internet broswer. Pressing the windows key does nothing, and I haven't been able to find a concrete fix for the issue. Is there a way to fix and or avoid this completely?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just installed a fresh copy of windows 8.1 on my Asus N53S laptop that comes stock with Windows 7 and now my keyboard shortcuts for volume do not work. Above the F1-F4 keys i have three buttons to mute, increase and decrease the volume which do not work. The keyboard shortcut's for muting, decreasing and increasing volume do not work either (Fn+F10-F12) but the shortcut for decreasing brightness and turning the screen off works (Fn+F5-F7) If there is any way to get this working again.

For a while I would plug in headphones into the mic port and it would bring up a dialog saying I could change it to another headphone port but it never worked. Now it doesn't even pop up. I want this so when I go on long trips my girlfriend and I could watch a movie together using 2 pairs of headphones.

View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen I turned my laptop on for the first time, it installed Windows 8 automatically, which made me think there is a hidden volume somewhere on the hard drive. I listed all the volumes using DiskPart utility and it showed me some hidden ones, as expected. What I want to do now is to explore the hidden volumes' contents, and retrieve the drivers from there if possible. But the problem is, I don't know how to list the contents of those volumes. I could've used DIR command if they were accessible through the letters, but unfortunately they don't have any letters associated with them. how I can list the contents of the hidden volumes.

I went o Disk Management to reassign the drive letter but letters J, K, L, and M are not available. There are ones before and after those letters that are available but I need those letters.

I have an unknown device which I will address in another thread. Anyway my keyboard lags sometimes while I am typing fast. Never did that on my Windows 7. I'm running 64 bit as well.

For one domain admin user only, when he logs in he sees normal mapped drives. The longer he's working, he starts seeing more and more letters mapped to the same particular network share. So after a few hours he'll have 12 drive letters all mapped to the same network share.
Doesn't matter what workstation. Doesn't seem to be a particular application.
Installed Windows 8 first, then installed Win XP to a second partition on the same disk.
In windows 8, the XP partition is seen as D:
If I boot to XP, XP sees itself as I:
it sees the windows 8 partition as C: and that is what I want, is C: being win 8 and XP being D:
Is there anyway to change the lettering on the XP partition?
When entering letters and numbers, that I believe are used to prevent Robo emails, do I have to use upper and lower case letters? I have a heck of a time getting those to take, and have to repeat them several times.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI just installed a pretty clean install of Windows 8 Pro (I used the upgrade, but I did the upgrade immediately over top of a clean windows 7 install). It is installed on an intel SSD. I haven't installed any applications or added any documents, or files. However, when I go to file explorer and right click on my drive it shows that I've used 69GB of space on the SSD! That's after doing disk cleanup and removing the previous windows files and temporary upgrade files. I couldn't believe Windows was taking up 69GB, so I investigated further. If I select the drive in file explorer and then select every folder displayed, and then right click and select properties, then it only comes up as about 13GB. Is there a known problem with Windows 8 computing space useage on SSD drives?

All computers are networked, and share printers thru a netgear vpn router. Of cause they all can go online. Question: How can I prevent the XP computer from going online?
I opened the netgear router settings ( http://192.168.0.1 ), but can not find any setting blocking a computer from going on line.
I didn't have this line before but my little nephew has done something wrong while he used File Explorer so it looks to me really irritated.

When I try to print it, it does not give me the printer options like previous versions of Windows did. Advanced options only allow me to choose orientation and page order. It does allow me to choose size as far as full page, 8x10, 5x7, 4x6, contact sheet, etc, but this is not what I need. I need to be able to print actual size and scale up (or down) from there.

Whenever i connect my internet dongle in my laptop USB port,it does not show that any hardware is plugged in or not.. Thats why i am facing problem in connecting to internet.

I have an audio source connected to Line In and I use the volume mixer to un-mute the input when I want to listen to the audio from that source. I recently started having a problem where after re-booting Line In does not show up in my volume mixer and I do not hear audio from the Line In Source even though I have listen to this device active. (during boot up I do hear the audio for a fraction of a second)
To get Line In to work and show up in the volume mixer again, I have to go to manage audio devices under control panel and select the record tab. from there I can see Line In and I see that it is set as the default device and I can see that there is audio based on the indicator bars to the right of Line In. I then have to go to the Listen tab for Line In and uncheck "Listen to this device" and click on Apply, then Check "Listen to this device" and Click Apply. After doing all of this the Audio can be heard and Line In appears on the Volume Mixer until the next reboot where I have to perform those steps all over again.

I have this dark horizontal line that appears in windows explorer every time I'm in a window, It appears right at the bottom of the navigation bar, its not glaring though, just that its distracting and every time I hover around it, I See the "move" cursor which doesn't do anything. How do I get rid of this line? It was never there as at the last time I restarted my PC.
