View 7 RepliesI accidentally deleted an image I wanted to use online so went to the bin to retrieve it. It had been permanently deleted without passing through the bin. This is something that has only appeared (or disappeared) in the past day or so.
I run MS Defender, but there is notihng in settings.
I recovered it in Windows 8 manager file undelete.
Forget it, the bin has come back again???? Weird!
I recently had an issue with ownership where I had to change back the ownership of my C: drive to Administrators and was able to fix that. However, I'm still getting an alert that I have a corrupted Recycle Bin. I tried to delete it, but it comes right back even in Safe Mode. I tried removing the directory with "rd /s /f C:$Recycle.bin", but it just tells me that the directory is not empty. There's this one folder with one r0OWNYK.dbx file inside the bin. How to remove it?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI had deleted some items and decided to restore them.
When I open the recycle bin, I can see the files for about 2 seconds and then it seems the system crashes and refreshes/restarts. As soon as it opens, the little blue circle is there spinning.
I tried pinning a Recycle Bin tile to the tile screen and it does the same thing, whether I am in desktop mode or tile screen.
I have tried clicking on "restore all files" quickly when the Recycle Bin is open, but nothing is operable.
I have rebooted, I have checked for updates, and cannot fix it as of yet.
When I right click the Recycle Bin and click Empty Recycle Bin, the desktop freezes: the desktop become unclickable; if I click anywhere on the desktop, it just gives me a "ding" sound.
Everything else works fine, like icons on the dock is clickable, I can go to start and open an app etc.
The way I can empty the recycle bin is open the recycle bin and empty it within the folder.
After seeing a couple files permanently delete at unseasonable moments, I now at least enabled deletion confirmation messages. The bug is with the HDD I use for storage, the SSD hosting the OS works according to the recycle bin settings. I tried the classic subterfuge of switching these settings back and forth for both drives, without success though. This is a new installation of 8.1 Pro for me and I think making deletion without confirmation the default behavior was bad move.
View 9 Replies View RelatedEvery time I start my computer and I click on an icon (on the desktop or in the Start menu), the icon disappears and this error message shows up about a dozen times:"Could not find this item. This is no longer in C:...Verify this item's location." And that things (ex- documents, my computer icon, movie, song) go to Recycle Bin. And when i select bunch of file by pressing CTRL+A, then it shows option for delete automatically. I am using ASUS K46 Series laptop with windows 8.
In my thinking, there might be problem regarding DEL key. I thought that because when i press power button of my laptop instantly boot menu comes ( which come only by pressing DEL key normally). But DEL key looks like normal like other key. There is no tapped or go inside of DEL key.
What is the right way to clean them up or remove the bins altogether?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a friend who was deleting downloads and accidentally deleted her documents folder as well (Folder was stored on a external portable hard drive). She went to the recycle bin and clicked the file and chose restore, it showed all positive signs and removed it from the recycle bin, but there is no trace of where it went. It is not anywhere on the external hard drive (which was connected when she did the restore from recycle bin). I tried searching everywhere and there is no sign of it, where it went? We tried downloading a free data recovery program, but it is still scanning and will take another 4 hours.

View 7 Replies View RelatedIn Windows 8.1 Pro Update 1 64-bit I am not given the option to move files to the Recycle Bin. Instead, when I delete a file I am asked "Are you sure you want to permanently delete this file?"In the Recycle Bin properties for each hard drive partition I have not selected "Don't move files to the Recycle Bin" and I have check-marked "Display delete confirmation dialog."
I can't remember precisely when this started to happen, but I did install Update 1 recently. I don't know if that matters.
I have Windows 8.1 and my settings for my recycle bin are "Don't move files to recycle bin. Remove files immediately when deleted." yet my recycle bin still fills up with the files I intend to delete.

View 1 Replies View RelatedThis morning with a big surprise I found that a lot of files had been deleted from my external HDD
On the desktop I had a look in recycle bin and could notice it was empty.
So sad, I plugged the external HDD on USB port and had a look again in recycle bin, at my surprise many files were there, waiting to be deleted and I could restore them by chance.
I unplugged the extrenal HDD and plugged another one and noticed a file was present again in the recycle bin waiting to be deleted., then I unplugged the HHD and tried to cancel the famous file with no success, the only way was to plugged again the HDD.
So strange situation as the recycle bin icon does not look as it is full, so I don't know if this is a bug from Windows 8 or not but will take care in future as I never seen that problem with Windows 7.
-Windows 8.1 Professional x64
-I have (2) HDD's under RAID 1 {mirrored}
After fresh install I now have the (2) HDD's shown and was was notified to install chipset driver, so I did and ended up installing the Intel Rapid Storage Technology.
Now my (2) HDD's are mirrored {combined to one drive} but the problem is I get an error about recycle bin being corrupt, delete- yes or no?.... and nothing works trying both options and the message keeps coming up.
In Windows 8, what does one need to do, so that when one creates a shortcut, it does not have "shortcut" added to the end of the name?
Of course one can rename the shortcut and delete that suffix, but simpler it they were not created that way from the outset.
I managed to stop that behavior in WinXP and Win7, but I forget how, and I don't know if it is done the same way in Windows 8 anyhow.
By the way, I do not mind the little arrow on shortcut icons, a little reminder that it is a shortcut (but no need for "shortcut" to be added to the name.)
Also, if I create a shortcut on my WinXP computer, it does not add a file extension. For instance, if I create a shortcut to a file named "program.exe", the shortcut in XP will just say "Program". On my Windows 8 computer though, the shortcut is called program.exe.shortcut.
I don't remember if it was that way in XP by default, or whether I did some tweak years ago. Although I do have Explorer set to show file extensions, I don't need a shortcut to include the extension, as well as no suffix "shortcut".
Is there a tweak in Windows 8 to have the default shortcut not include the word "shortcut" at the end, and not include the extension of the file linked to?
So I was typing something into the search bar for google chrome and when i touched certain key it opened up the app menu or closed the who window entirely. the same happened when i tried to play a game off of steam, why is this happening and whats the best way to stop it?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've installed some software that runs on the Desktop. On Windows earlier than 8, it installs some shortcuts in its part of the start menu that run various configuration programs. When you want to reconfigure the software you click the start menu, find the entry/folder for the software then click the shortcut for the required configuration program.
But these shortcuts do not actually run an exe file. Looking at their properties, their targets are actually of the form (for example):
C:WindowsSysWOW64
undll32.exe "C:WindowsSysWOW64ff_vfw.dll",configureVFW
and the shortcut name is simply "VFW configuration".
On Windows 8 of course there is no start menu. So what is the easiest way I can run these shortcuts in Windows 8 ?
I use several symbols often (not just on word docs, but also online). Instead of having to turn on the numlock and typing alt+#, I would like to be able to use shorter shortcuts.
I know that for word docs, I can set the shortcut to whatever I want (strangely, OneNote doesn't let me...). Is there a way I can change the shortcut sequences that could be applied oustide of word docs?
I use keyboard shortcuts extensively. Some are application specific, some are system shortcuts. I am finding that Windows 8 shortcuts are overriding shortcuts I use in some applications, and I would like to be able to delete or reassign the system shortcut so I can use it in an application. However, while there is a myriad of posts on different people's ideas of "essential" keyboard shortcuts, I can find no information on how to change shortcuts.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI just started using Windows 8, so I don't know where everything is. However, I would like to use the Desktop for short cuts to documents I use frequently. I can put them there all right, but when I try to use them again, I get message something like: "the document to which this shortcut points has been moved or deleted", and then asks me if I should delete the shortcut, which I do since obviously it no longer works. Is there a way I can put documents on the desktop, and retrieve them whenever?

View 9 Replies View RelatedInstead of storing my photographs on the C drive on my Windows 8 machine, I have them on a powered USB hard drive which is always attached to my PC. In the My Pictures folder in Windows (C:users[name]My Pictures) I've created a shortcut to the photos folder on my USB hard drive. This works fine when I navigate to it using Explorer or any other file exploring software.
However, when I use a photo editing application such as GIMP2, click Open and navigate to the My Pictures folder on my C drive, the shortcut folder is not shown. Other image folders which are actually in that folder are shown. To see the shortcut folder I need to change what is shown from 'All images' to 'All files'. When I do this I can then see the 'My Pictures - Shortcut.lnk'but if I then try and open that folder I receive an error message saying that opening the shorcut failed: unknown file type.
Why this should be? Similar behaviour is exhibited in Photoshop Express. When I select my pictures folder, the folders that are physically in C:users[name]My Pictures are shown but not my shortcut folder so there seems to be no way of accessing the photos on my USB hard drive. Another image editing app I have also ignores the My pictures shortcut folder, so I think it's a Windows thing rather than a problem with the individual apps.
I have View hidden files ticked.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI read in another forum that you can stop Windows from adding "- Shortcut" to shortcuts by modifying the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerlink
To do so, you have to change the binary data from 1e 00 00 00 to 00 00 00 00.
I did this and it works great. I want to go a bit further, however.
Whenever I create shortcuts to files that have an extension (e.g. .txt) the shortcut ends up having the file extension as well.
I was wondering, is there any way to modify the same registry setting (or some other one) to also remove the extension for shortcuts?
Is there any way I can find out how to interpret registry binary data so I know what to change? How can I find out what each bit does?
I have a brand new Hp Pavilion and while in the process of customizing my desktop and taskbar I found that i am unable to pin anything from the desktop or shortcuts I created (such as Microsoft Word, or the snipping tool) to the taskbar. I have tried all three methods to try and pin.
The only items pinned are the ones already there from the first boot.
