View 3 RepliesOn a new Windows 8 Installation, I created a local non/domain user. The first user is the "magical" user.
Then I added the domain user and made sure it was an Administrator, both on the Metro settings and on the Desktop. At least, if I go in now and look, it claims to be an Administrator.
Then I joined the company domain and that seemed to work OK. And then I made the account a Microsoft Account type user.
Now, whenever I install a program, it wants Admin Credentials. I put in the Domain Admin credentials and that works to install the program. But this happens over and over again, as I am moving from Windows7 to Windows 8.
I read that any secondary users cannot install programs without being changed into an Administrator. Well, I did that, but it still does the same thing.
Since I am part ways through my switch to Windows 8, I would rather not start over again, if there is some way to fix this, although I don't want to disable UAC either. It just seems like I should be recognized as an Admin and yet I'm not.
I am the only user on my computer and I am registered as a Microsoft user, yet I still have to grant admin access to run certain programs and edit certain files. How can I grant myself access to everything?

so after I did windows updates after a long time (it's for a good reason that I am not updating) the notebook failed to start correctly. After the windows loading screen, only different tones of black were flashing - probably bad graphics driver. Anyway, I managed to do a system restore. Although it said it wasn't successful, it works But now some programs won't start. From Adobe, AfterEffects starts without problems, but Photoshop and Illustrator has an error: [URL]
When I try to uninstall Office completely, the set-up window doesn't even come up. And what's worse... when I run a new installation from a disk, there's an error too. [URL]
I've never come across something like this.. I don't know what to do.
Edit: So I managed to uninstall Office through a 3rd party software.. but I still have trouble installing it back (a different error now). I run as administrator and have full user rights on the folder..
It was working before today all of a sudden every time I open a pic Windows asks me what program I want to open it with, WD (which is a Western Digital Metro App that I don't know how it got installed), or Paint, or Windows Photo Viewer.
So I choose Windows Photo Viewer but everytime I open a pic it asks me the same thing ....
So I went to my program defaults but when I try to make Windows Photo Viewer the default app, it only makes 8 out of 12 extensions the same and not any more ....
I uninstalled that stupid WD metro app but it's still the same ....
Same thing with MPC-HC when I make it default nothing happens, it has 0 out of 112 extensions that it can't associate with ....
When I've been running certain programs on my computer, I keep getting the message, program has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available. This has happened to me in Internet Explorer when I try to play movies, Windows Media Player, Norton Internet Security and when I try to run Windows Experience index.
Some programs wont even open. My computer has been running fine since I purchased it 8 months ago. This started happening after a windows update a couple of weeks ago. I've refreshed windows 8 twice, ran a full system virus scan, ran malwarebytes and it found nothing. I also tried sfc /scannow and used dism /online /cleanup-image /restore health to fix component store corruption and fix corrupt system files and also tried gwscan from Hirens boot cd. I generated a system health report and this is what the report came up with:
My laptop (Dell Inspiron 2013 64-bit) was playing up today and instead of restarting it, I foolishly clicked on the option to "refresh the pc". Little did I know that this would remove all my current programs....
I decided then to do a System Restore. Now, all my programs are back, however, the majority of my programs such Firefox, Microsoft Office and such will not even open!!!
I would just like to know if there is anyway to get these programs running again without having to reinstall them all?
All of a sudden many of my programs either won't launch or stops working right after launch.
I have no "reset" point that can fix this, and I have tried "sfc /scannow" (without having a clue what it does). After the sfc /scannow, the command prompt message said I had some corrupt files, and not all of them could be fixed automatically.
What can cause several programs to stop working all of a sudden, and what can possibly fix it?(Without re-installing Win 8 of course)
Recently my mom visited a website that tricked her. She downloaded and installed some stuff she didn't need. I removed the stuff but noticed some other problems. I'm not sure if these are new problems caused by the useless stuff she installed.
Control Panel -> Programs -> Programs and Features is not showing all installed programs. Oddly, the only listed installed programs have names that start with the letter M. 14 programs are listed. See picture. Start Menu -> All Programs -> I suspect some programs are missing. I have a Win 7 style Start menu because I am using IObit's Start Menu 8 program. Control Panel -> System and Security -> Administrative Tools was empty. I fixed that by using SFC /SCANNOW.
I tried using System Restore to go back to an earlier date, but that didn't work. In the process of trying to do that I discovered that BitDefender Internet Security 2014 doesn't get along with Windows 8.1's System Restore feature. I uninstalled BitDefender and successfully went back to an earlier date but still had the same problems with missing programs. I undid the restore. I created a new Windows user account. The new account had the same issues: missing programs in the Start menu and Programs and Features menu.
On Windows 8.1, when I open Programs and Features in Control Panel, it does not show all of my installed programs. I am trying to remove some programs and they are not listed.
View 8 Replies View RelatedIn Windows 8, what does one need to do, so that when one creates a shortcut, it does not have "shortcut" added to the end of the name?
Of course one can rename the shortcut and delete that suffix, but simpler it they were not created that way from the outset.
I managed to stop that behavior in WinXP and Win7, but I forget how, and I don't know if it is done the same way in Windows 8 anyhow.
By the way, I do not mind the little arrow on shortcut icons, a little reminder that it is a shortcut (but no need for "shortcut" to be added to the name.)
Also, if I create a shortcut on my WinXP computer, it does not add a file extension. For instance, if I create a shortcut to a file named "program.exe", the shortcut in XP will just say "Program". On my Windows 8 computer though, the shortcut is called program.exe.shortcut.
I don't remember if it was that way in XP by default, or whether I did some tweak years ago. Although I do have Explorer set to show file extensions, I don't need a shortcut to include the extension, as well as no suffix "shortcut".
Is there a tweak in Windows 8 to have the default shortcut not include the word "shortcut" at the end, and not include the extension of the file linked to?
So I was typing something into the search bar for google chrome and when i touched certain key it opened up the app menu or closed the who window entirely. the same happened when i tried to play a game off of steam, why is this happening and whats the best way to stop it?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've installed some software that runs on the Desktop. On Windows earlier than 8, it installs some shortcuts in its part of the start menu that run various configuration programs. When you want to reconfigure the software you click the start menu, find the entry/folder for the software then click the shortcut for the required configuration program.
But these shortcuts do not actually run an exe file. Looking at their properties, their targets are actually of the form (for example):
C:WindowsSysWOW64
undll32.exe "C:WindowsSysWOW64ff_vfw.dll",configureVFW
and the shortcut name is simply "VFW configuration".
On Windows 8 of course there is no start menu. So what is the easiest way I can run these shortcuts in Windows 8 ?
I use several symbols often (not just on word docs, but also online). Instead of having to turn on the numlock and typing alt+#, I would like to be able to use shorter shortcuts.
I know that for word docs, I can set the shortcut to whatever I want (strangely, OneNote doesn't let me...). Is there a way I can change the shortcut sequences that could be applied oustide of word docs?
I use keyboard shortcuts extensively. Some are application specific, some are system shortcuts. I am finding that Windows 8 shortcuts are overriding shortcuts I use in some applications, and I would like to be able to delete or reassign the system shortcut so I can use it in an application. However, while there is a myriad of posts on different people's ideas of "essential" keyboard shortcuts, I can find no information on how to change shortcuts.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI just started using Windows 8, so I don't know where everything is. However, I would like to use the Desktop for short cuts to documents I use frequently. I can put them there all right, but when I try to use them again, I get message something like: "the document to which this shortcut points has been moved or deleted", and then asks me if I should delete the shortcut, which I do since obviously it no longer works. Is there a way I can put documents on the desktop, and retrieve them whenever?

View 7 Replies View RelatedInstead of storing my photographs on the C drive on my Windows 8 machine, I have them on a powered USB hard drive which is always attached to my PC. In the My Pictures folder in Windows (C:users[name]My Pictures) I've created a shortcut to the photos folder on my USB hard drive. This works fine when I navigate to it using Explorer or any other file exploring software.
However, when I use a photo editing application such as GIMP2, click Open and navigate to the My Pictures folder on my C drive, the shortcut folder is not shown. Other image folders which are actually in that folder are shown. To see the shortcut folder I need to change what is shown from 'All images' to 'All files'. When I do this I can then see the 'My Pictures - Shortcut.lnk'but if I then try and open that folder I receive an error message saying that opening the shorcut failed: unknown file type.
Why this should be? Similar behaviour is exhibited in Photoshop Express. When I select my pictures folder, the folders that are physically in C:users[name]My Pictures are shown but not my shortcut folder so there seems to be no way of accessing the photos on my USB hard drive. Another image editing app I have also ignores the My pictures shortcut folder, so I think it's a Windows thing rather than a problem with the individual apps.
I have View hidden files ticked.
I just bought a new Dell with Windows 8, and after installing Office 2010, I inadvertently deleted the Office program shortcuts from the Start Menu as I was placing them on the Desktop. They're also gone from the All apps menu. how to put them back?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI read in another forum that you can stop Windows from adding "- Shortcut" to shortcuts by modifying the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerlink
To do so, you have to change the binary data from 1e 00 00 00 to 00 00 00 00.
I did this and it works great. I want to go a bit further, however.
Whenever I create shortcuts to files that have an extension (e.g. .txt) the shortcut ends up having the file extension as well.
I was wondering, is there any way to modify the same registry setting (or some other one) to also remove the extension for shortcuts?
Is there any way I can find out how to interpret registry binary data so I know what to change? How can I find out what each bit does?
I have a brand new Hp Pavilion and while in the process of customizing my desktop and taskbar I found that i am unable to pin anything from the desktop or shortcuts I created (such as Microsoft Word, or the snipping tool) to the taskbar. I have tried all three methods to try and pin.
The only items pinned are the ones already there from the first boot.

How to disable windows Key button shortcuts? I am not sure if is enabled only Windows Key or even CRTL+ something or Alt+ something...
In some Games, when i use some of this buttons sometimes i open up language selection, sometimes some other setting. Want to perm disable this shortcuts.
I just got a laptop with windows 8 last week. I hate the things they are doing with windows, my last OS was XP. I found that the file path names were hidden by default and set out to change that. In doing so I changed the access permissions thinking that it would allow me to see the file paths and have access, but it didn't, although I did find out where to change the explorer settings so that I now can see the file path, even though it's not as complete as in XP. So here's the problem: I checked the access permissions on each user type to open things up, but now in explorer some of the folders appear as shortcuts with the little 'arrow in a box' icon, and when you try to open it, it refuses access. I'm thinking this might be to the changes in access permissions, but it might not be.

View 4 Replies View RelatedRegularly, when using keyboard shortcuts a Keyboard Shortcuts panel appears automatically. I can't find a way to close the panel out.
The only way I can close it is to shut the computer down.
Is there a way to open the panel, manually, if needed, and then close it?
If not, is there a way to prevent the panel from appearing at all?
Edit: The panel is displayed every time I use a keyboard shortcut.
Solved: To make the panel hide, press Ctrl + Shift + Alt + Right-cursor-key.
In the Metro screen, some shortcuts have an icon that looks like the Windows Photo Viewer icon. Some of these programs are: Macrium Reflect, Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center, TightVNC Viewer and Adobe Reader XI. See the screenshot below. How can I restore the icons, and prevent it from happening again?
