Must Enter Admin Credentials To Install Programs

Jan 18, 2013

On a new Windows 8 Installation, I created a local non/domain user. The first user is the "magical" user.

Then I added the domain user and made sure it was an Administrator, both on the Metro settings and on the Desktop. At least, if I go in now and look, it claims to be an Administrator.

Then I joined the company domain and that seemed to work OK. And then I made the account a Microsoft Account type user.

Now, whenever I install a program, it wants Admin Credentials. I put in the Domain Admin credentials and that works to install the program. But this happens over and over again, as I am moving from Windows7 to Windows 8.

I read that any secondary users cannot install programs without being changed into an Administrator. Well, I did that, but it still does the same thing.

Since I am part ways through my switch to Windows 8, I would rather not start over again, if there is some way to fix this, although I don't want to disable UAC either. It just seems like I should be recognized as an Admin and yet I'm not.

Windows 8 - Cannot Install Except By Right Clicking And Run As Admin

Apr 25, 2013

At present I cannot run any program installer except by right clicking and choosing 'Run as Administrator'.

This has happened twice recently and the cause is totally unknown to me. I have just recently re-installed everything afresh, and this morning I have got the same problem - I clicked on an installer and the following error message popped up:

Unable to execute file in temporary directory. Setup aborted.
Error 5: Access is denied.

Reason and a remedy for this?

Hardware Drivers :: Not Recognized As Admin - Can't Install Driver For WiFi

Aug 27, 2014

I work at a hotel, and we are having issues with our public computer (Acer Aspire XC-603G desktop) connecting to the internet. As it seemed like an issue in the wall, I decided the easiest way to fix it would be to buy a wifi USB adapter (NETGEAR N300) and just use that instead. However, when I try to install the driver from the included CD, it keeps giving me an "access is denied" error.

The account I'm using says it has administrator privileges, though that's been giving me issues as well. The person who initially set up the computer only set up one account, which anyone could use. I added another, gave it the administrator rights, and removed them from the original. However, even though it says the new account is an administrator account, messages often pop up and say that I can't do what I'm trying to do because I only have standard privileges.

Tablets :: How To Install Programs On PC To VivoTab Smart

Aug 26, 2013

I have some programs (on my PC) that I would like to install somehow onto my vivotab. I am not super programmer literate so simple terms are best. I plugged my tablet into my PC to try to just drag the program over (apparently that is a no go). I even got so far as to drag it into the public file and it showed up on my tablet but doesn't work when I try to open it so I don't think it actually moved the whole program.

I do have the CDs for the programs but obviously there is no CD drive on the tablet. I do not have an external CD drive and do not plan on getting one, I am hoping there is some way to just transfer the program from my PC or somehow use my PC AS an augmented CD drive.

Maintenance :: Lenovo Z580 Running Windows 8 - Clearing Space To Install Programs

Feb 4, 2013

I have a Lenovo Z580 running Windows 8 on a 256 GB SSD, which was cloned from the original drive using Paragon cloning software. I got the computer up and running about a month ago, and I started personalizing it by installing programs and such. At the beginning of today, I probably had around 25 GBs left of storage, which may not seem like much but it will last me until I need to be done with this computer.

Today I went to download a 5 GB zipped folder used to install MATLAB via a licensed, legit website (student license). I check after it downloads and I have roughly 20 GB left on my disk. Note that every other program I have installed has had no trouble with Windows 8 (including Mathematica), so I assumed MATLAB wouldn't either. I hit the setup button, and nothing seems to come up. I hit it again and this time it says something like "not allowed to create destination." So then I tried cutting and pasting it to the desktop, but there was some error with that too. I tried to use the setup application in other ways, and it still didn't work.

I then checked my free disk space and I had 100 MB of free space left. Uhm WHAT?! What the hell just happened?! I search through pretty much ALL my file folders to see what was newly written and see if I could find a TWENTY GIGABYTE folder that was created today. I couldn't find anything. What I think happened was that the setup application unpacked a bunch of files from the compressed folder SOMEWHERE on my disk, EACH TIME I hit setup. THEN it would hit a snag, for some reason, and stop the setup, and NOT delete the temporary files.

SO my next step was to use the "Disk Cleanup" option, to see if the theoretical temporary files could be deleted that way. It gets to the list and I discover that the "Temporary files" option is an INCREDIBLE 98.6 GB size. UHM WHAT?! How is it possible that my OS thinks it can safely delete nearly 100 GBs of data off my 256 GB hard drive?! What is it deleting exactly? Let's assume that 20 GB was in there; that still means it's deleting almost 80 GBs. I couldn't believe that. So obviously I haven't deleted that yet, because I fear that it thinks some of my programs, or maybe even the OS itself, is a bunch of temporary files. I don't even know. I do have a 30 GB recovery partition, so maybe that 30 is included in that, but EVEN THEN 50 GBs is a TON to be in temporary files.

My question: is there any way to check what will be deleted in the option "Temporary files" and why is my temporary files 38% of my entire drive? Also, what happened with the 20 GBs?

I labelled it urgent because I need to install MATLAB to use it for HW, but I can't. Well I think I can find another way to use it, however I still need this problem fixed ASAP because I need space on my computer to do stuff in general.

Network / Sharing :: Connecting To Windows 8 Laptop From Windows 7 - Sign In Credentials Not Accepted

May 6, 2013

Have a question regarding "Local Account". I'm having problems connecting to the Win 8 laptop from Win 7 as it will not accept my sign in credentials. With that, am I to assume that this is because the credential aren't "Local", and thus this is what this is for???

With that, if I choose to go with the "local account" can I easily switch back to the Microsoft one?

Network / Sharing :: Network Shares Asking For Login Credentials?

Mar 25, 2014

I have a Windows 7 desktop pc and a Windows 8.1 laptop. The problem is that I can't get a reliable connection between them to enable transfer of files, and it's only one-way when it *does* actually work. I'm not using a Homegroup, but just sharing various folders.

Perhaps I should mention here that the laptop used to have Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit on it and connection between it and the Win 7 pc were fine, in both directions - the change to Win 8 wasn't an upgrade but a clean install on a spare hard drive. So I'm thinking it's something to do with Win 8, but I'm not an expert in networking so I could be wrong.

Anyway, I have *never* been able to get the Win 7 pc to connect to the Win 8 laptop, as every time I try I'm being asked for a username and password - what these would be as I have never set them up, and when I installed Win 8 (it upgraded to 8.1 a week or two ago) I opted to not use a Microsoft login. However, my account name (which is the Administrator account) and Windows passwords are the same on both machines.

From the Win 8 laptop I *can* connect to the Win 7 pc, but it's odd - if I go into Windows Explorer on the Win 8 laptop I can see all of the files in the shared folders on the Win 7 desktop, but if I do this again a minute or two later it won't work and I'll be asked for a username and password to connect! I'm assuming the username is the name of the account and the password is the Windows password, which don't work.

I've tried setting-up a Homegroup, but this didn't work as again I'm being asked from both machines for a username and password. I've also tried all the usual network sharing things like turning on file and printer sharing, not using passwords etc but nothing's working for me. I've even disabled the firewall on both computers, but it had no effect.

It's become difficult as I'm having to transfer files via USB stick between two computers which are only 5 feet apart.

Apps / Software :: Missing Some Programs In Programs And Features?

Apr 2, 2014

Recently my mom visited a website that tricked her. She downloaded and installed some stuff she didn't need. I removed the stuff but noticed some other problems. I'm not sure if these are new problems caused by the useless stuff she installed.

Control Panel -> Programs -> Programs and Features is not showing all installed programs. Oddly, the only listed installed programs have names that start with the letter M. 14 programs are listed. See picture. Start Menu -> All Programs -> I suspect some programs are missing. I have a Win 7 style Start menu because I am using IObit's Start Menu 8 program. Control Panel -> System and Security -> Administrative Tools was empty. I fixed that by using SFC /SCANNOW.

I tried using System Restore to go back to an earlier date, but that didn't work. In the process of trying to do that I discovered that BitDefender Internet Security 2014 doesn't get along with Windows 8.1's System Restore feature. I uninstalled BitDefender and successfully went back to an earlier date but still had the same problems with missing programs. I undid the restore. I created a new Windows user account. The new account had the same issues: missing programs in the Start menu and Programs and Features menu.

Unable To Enter Numbers In Address Bar?

Dec 29, 2012

I tried all three browsers, Firefox, IE 10, and chrome. I tried a second keyboard with the same results. I verified that the system worked correctly at the OS level by entering numbers and special characters into notepad. There are several other places that the problem is present.

When I enter my password to get into Comcast webmail and when I enter a password containing either a number or special character in a prompt for accessing one of my network devices. Any problems with keyboard control after upgrading to win 8?

Unable To Enter Advanced Startup Options

Jul 19, 2013

I have a multiboot scenario set up on my laptop, and I'm using the Windows 8 Graphical Bootloader to manage my other operating systems. I need to install two programs, GBridge, and Synaptics Touchpad Installer, and both use unsigned drivers. It seems Windows 8 doesn't ask for confirmation to install unsigned drivers like previous versions of Windows, it just outright denies them without user consent.

As a solution, I figured I would go to advanced startup options and disable driver signature enforcement like I did *successfully* for my Windows 8 desktop, but after it reboots to enter advanced startup mode, it just goes straight into Windows! No matter how many times I tell it to enter advanced startup mode, it refuses to do it. I even tried removing all my multiboot options and it still goes straight into Windows without asking me what I want to do.

For the record, I've tried it these ways:

Charms Menu -> Settings -> Change PC Settings -> General -> (Advanced Startup Options) -> Reboot Now -> Troubleshoot -> Advanced Options -> Startup Settings -> Restart (What a pain in the ass to have to navigate all this crap btw)
Choose an OS -> Other Options -> Advanced Startup Options
From legacy boot menu -> F8 -> Advanced Startup Options

All these attempts and methods achieve the same result: a normal reboot without giving the options of what advanced startup I want.
