Can't Make Flash Drive Bootable
Aug 2, 2014
Whether I use Legacy or UEFI Mode, I can't get my PC to boot from flash drive, which was NEVER a problem before. It worked just fine, but now I tried Win Toolkit, RUFUS, and WinUSB maker with 2 different Windows 8.1 Update 1 ISO files (one by me and on by murphy). Neither worked. I reset BIOS settings completely, but that also didn't work - my PC sees the flash drive, but it just won't boot from it, without any error. If I force that flash drive to be the only boot drive, then it just takes me back into UEFI/BIOS without any error messages...

I would like to make a flash drive bootable and I have looked at the utility that HP has called USB Disk Storage Format Tool and every place I have looked to find how to install and use it, the instructions that I have seen do not show up for me when I run the program. Where I can get some good instructions on how to create the flash drive.

How to make a Widows 8.1 DVD disk that works as a recovery disk. What your actually making is an Windows 8.1 Enterprise Evaluation installation disk. When the disk boots up, you select repair disk instead of install. This will give you access to all the repair programs as well as system image recovery option.
All you have to is, go to this webpage (Download Windows 8.1 Enterprise Evaluation) and download the ISO for Windows 8.1 Enterprise evaluation. This will let download the ISO file. Warning, this file is 3.7 gig big and takes a few minutes. After that simply burn to disk. When you boot this disk, just choose repair instead of install. Just note, that like all install disk it takes time to load. 2 minutes and 20seconds on my machine.

Having used Windows 8 satisfactorially for a while now on a VM I'm trying to install it on a real PHYSICAL machine.
To save the hassle of burning DVD's I decided I would like to install from a USB drive however when trying to create a bootable USB stick using the usb tool from the tutorial it always fail with "Cannot copy the files".
I've tried on 3 different USB sticks from different manufacturers so it's almost outside the possibility that all 3 USB sticks are defective. I'm trying to run this on W7 X64.

Any links to an alternative tool that will do this ...

I'm in the process of moving to an SSD and need to create a backup drive in order to repair the BIOS after transferring everything. However, when I try to create one - the create a recovery drive program won't recognize the flash drive I have connected as a flash drive.
I first tried with a SanDisk Cruzer which apparently had a quirk in that it shows up as a hard drive instead of removable flash drive. That seems to be well documented on forums all over the place and there is no fix.
So, I purchased a cheap 8 GB stick (no brand) and Windows (I'm running 8.1 x64) recognizes it as a removable disk. However, the create a backup utility still won't recognize it. I've found some random fixes that have worked for some (such as plugging it into a different USB port) but nothing has worked for me so far. I've tried doing it with the "copy the recovery partition" option both checked and unchecked.
If there's no solution to this wonderful "quirk" of Windows, then is there something else I can do to repair BIOS? Seems like there's not a fix to my problem out there...
EDIT So as of right now, I tried using HPs recovery software which seems to do the same thing as copying over your entire recovery partition. That didn't work either. However..when I had both USB sticks plugged in the Windows supplied utility recognized the SanDisk Cruzer when I checked the "copy the partition" thing

Partition wizard - seems no way to create a USB bootable media -- if your PC doesn't have a physical DVD drive even the PAID PRO version doesn't show the create bootable media option. Machine doesn't have bootable CD.
Gone back to the FREE GPARTED program -- although it can take a lot longer to run when re-sizing / moving partitions.
(Another method -- a bit extreme though is to install Partition wizard on a Windows to Go system !!!)
The Partition wizard website is totally confusing too it shows a USB version but how to obtain it is unclear and the documentation is not good either.

I have a laptop that has an SSD with Win 8.1 + programs, and an HDD for projects. They are both formatted GPT. When I launch Macrium, for some reason my SSD is now GPT 1 and the second drive is now GPT 2. This is confusing because I'm used to imaging the top line of partitions which is usually my OS. Now that the GPT numbers are reversed, I have to be careful when doing my backups. How to change this assignment so that the SSD will be GPT1 again?

I got this new Asus Transformer which is a Windows 8.1 system.
I made a few images with Macrium Reflect and created an UEFI recovery Flash Drive (with Macrium) for the Macrium recovery program. I can set the BIOS to boot from the stick (in the temporary or permanent BIOS settings). Problem is, when I hit Enter, it ignores the stick and boots directly into 8.1.
Is there another setting in the BIOS that I have to make in order to have it boot from the stick.

I own an Acer laptop that is runing Windows 7. I love Windows 7 and finally made the move from Windows XP but I really like Windows 8. Yet I'm nowhere near ready to make it my only OS. I know one possible option is a dual boot system. If I need to go that route I may be posting again in the future to find out how I can make a dual boot Windows 7/Windows 8 system. Yet I like trying different OS's and already have two USB sticks that are ChromeOS and Ubuntu Linux. I purchase 4GB flash drives and buy the fast drives.
The question is is it possible to install and then boot from a Windows 8 USB Flash Drive? If so, how would I go about doing this? Also, what is the minimum size USB Flash Drive that could be used? I want at least some room to work with and install apps but it won't be my primary OS. If it's not possible to do this how would I go about making a dual boot system? Already I have a 500GB HD with Windows 7 installed but I believe I'd have to repartition and hope to avoid having to reinstall Windows 7 since I have so many installed apps.

I have a 64GB flash drive I just bought to make a recovery for my laptop. I made the recovery partition just fine but its taking up 32gb when only using 21.5GB of space leaving over 10gb not usable. I am trying to shrink the partition to 24GB but it wont let me. Look at the attached screenshot.
Another question is my primary 1tb drive has a few extra 450MB partitions. What are they for?

Have you ever successfully rescued your wanted data back from USB flash drive? In fact, I recently also formatted my USB flash drive mistakenly and all stored data was lost. But, many of these lost files there are still important and useful for me. So, I just wonder whether I can find a way to rescue them all back.

I inserted a SanDisk Cruzer 16 GB flash drive in my Win 8 laptop, and a window opened that had the Sandisk logo and it said installing Sandisk files or something like that, with a progress bar that took about 20 seconds to move across. It was not the pop up bubble you generally see by the tray when a driver is being installed, it was larger and in the middle of the screen. It seemed like some sort of autorunning application, which I thought Windows 8 does not allow. I don't see any Sandisk application in Programs and Features.
