Windows 7 / 8 - Download / Copy BIN File To Root Directory For Each OS
Jan 26, 2014I need to download/copy a .bin file to the root directory for each operating system.
View 4 RepliesI need to download/copy a .bin file to the root directory for each operating system.
View 4 RepliesI'm running Windows 8.1 (standard/ home edition) and can't download a couple .exe files. I get "You'll need to provide administrator permission to copy to this folder". errors. I'm the only user on this computer and have administrator access.
The file resides on mediafire and via my ipad I was able to manage to transfer it to dropbox, but I still get the same error. The filename (partial) is created but no further downloading is done.
I can't take ownership of the file-- it doesn't exist on my computer yet.
I can't change the local security policy (I understand this is only available in Win 8 Pro version).
UAC is already disabled as much as I can figure (via the slider set to never notify).
Short of setting up a super admin account (would this even work?)
Got Win8 Pro Retail genuine installed and have a multi partitioned PC.
I am Administrator, and I have UIC set to its lowest possible setting.
I cannot copy any files to the C: Drive (root)... every time I get an error message and it will not let me do anything with the root.
So, I ran gpedit.msc and did these steps..
1. Run gpedit.msc, navigate and browse to Computer Configuration--Windows Settings--Security Settings--Local Policies--Security Options
2. Set policy User Account Control: Behavior of the elevation prompt for administrators - Elevate without prompting
3. Set policy User Account Control: Detect application installations and prompt for elevation - Disabled
4. Set policy User Account Control: Run all administrators in Admin Approval Mode - Disabled
OK, now perfect - I have full control of the root drive again... But this sparked another major issue with the 'modern apps' (metro)...
All modern/metro apps will now NOT RUN because they want UIC turned on (as in change those settings back I just tweaked).....
As soon as I turn UIC back on.... metro apps work - and I am blocked from my root drive again.
Windows8 navigation. Can not find familiar file directory to access files, instead apps and app store! Could some one direct me how I can turn off start screen and go back old fashion ways. Else I will have to go back to my Vista.
View 3 Replies View Relatedi'm not sure why this has started, but when I now try to DL any files or save ANY files, I get a message saying 'File directory is corrupted & unreadable'.
I tried to open an image with 'Windows Preview' & got 'Windows Photo viewer cant open this image, as the file appears to be damaged to large or corrupted' (none of which is correct)-yet I can still open ALL images by double clicking to use the windows photo/image viewer App
I also can not save anything either- I tried to take a screen shot & save it using paint- I just got the same 'File directory is corrupted & unreadable' message.
With Windows Internet Explorer, I have been trying to DL a torrent, but cant "open" the DL link (I click "open", but nothing happens), nor can I 'save it' (as I get the same 'File is corrupted & unreadable' message for both "save" options), nor can I click cancel to close the DL options box in Internet Explorer- as again, nothing happens when I click it.
To try get around these problems I tried using the magnet link option- which worked ONCE, but now even that wont work, as I cant DL the 2nd file- the DL starts (after taking ages to DL meta data- which is odd in itself), then the torrent is shortly terminated & I get the 'Error: File or directory is corrupt & unreadable' file message .
TO add to this I cant listen to a podcast with chrome either (tells me QuickTime failed to initialise Error#0) when I click "listen in a new window" & when I click "download" nothing happens at all.
EDITED: I forgot this problem has also prevented my VPN from working- I get the same Corrupted file/directory message every time I've tried to re-install it.
DL was fine, viewing images worked perfectly & I was able to open things in new windows without a problem.I have tried fixing with command prompt- it said it couldn't run to find the problems, tried using the windows restore thing, again said it couldnt complete a restore due to not being able to run properly.
I almost filled the hard disk C and would like to install other applications that discharge in the second harddisk D (microSDHC), wanting to make a symbolic link to the folder c program file windowsapp how can I do then to keep all permissions? using the function "Robocopy"?

I suppose I could use Word instead of notepad, but I don't want to wait forever for the files to open. Windows8 and 7 will let you open as many different copies of the same txt file as you want. With keeping my computer on most of the time, and doing various things, sometimes I forget that I have a file open. The most common instance is my list of software keys and activation codes. I had to reinstall something yesterday and had the file open, and it ended up behind a bunch of windows. Much later, I bought a new piece of software and had to add something to the list, a couple of somethings. I saved and closed--fine. Then, turning the computer off, it told me that my "Versions" file was still open--did I want to save, or what? At that point, I had to cancel the shutdown, open the saved copy, compare the saved copy with the one that was still open to see which information was different. Obviously, at that moment, I had not figured out which copy was which. If I had saved, it would have overwritten the changes, by reverting to the old version that I had open. I've had this happen several times, sometimes with new information in each file. I fail to understand why, when I try to open a txt file, Windows does not alert me that it is already open, and do I want to open another copy?
View 3 Replies View RelatedCurrently running WinXP, meets all requirement for Windows 8. However, when I try to copy the ISO file to USB using Win7 DVD download tool to create a bootable USB device, the USB I'm trying to copy it to will not show up in the list of "Devices to Copy In".
I have tried this several times with 2 different USB drives, both 8GB, one with more than 4GB free and the another is completely empty. They both work perfectly well, but when I reach the screen with the list of devices to copy the ISO file on to (Step 3 of 4, Win7 USB/DVD Download Tool) they don't show up on the list despite re-inserting them and refreshing a couple hundred times. The only removable device that does show up is the Floppy Disk.
I am using the DVD is not an option, since my DVD player crashed last week and I don't have the time to get it fixed right now, and I'd really like to get Windows 8 installed as soon as possible.
I like to use the desktop on my laptop rather than the tiles. I had no problem putting the browser on the desktop, but am a loss for putting the mail program there; there doesn't seem to be an executable file in the mail directory.

View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen I use Explorer on Windows 8.1 to copy multiple FLAC files to a folder on the SD card of my Nokia Lumia 625 (running on Windows Phone 8.1) via USB, a dialog window pops up in Explorer, asking me to choose between converting and just copying. If I choose to just copy, a progress bar appears, and it always gets stuck at the end of the first file transfer so I have to cancel or close the progress window, and, as a result, only the first file is transferred. If I copy a single FLAC file instead of multiple ones, the same thing happens at the end of the file transfer. So I am forced to copy the files one at a time, and I have to close the popup window for each of them. Is there any way to solve this?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have been reading about tricks for downloading Windows 8.1 ISOs to perform clean installs on OEM machines.
I also happen now to be in the same situation since the manufacturer did not package any media with the OS.
But my question now is:
- How to get Windows 8.1 with Update 1 already included in ISO from an official source like MSDN?
Additional doubts:
- In this tutorial, does the process already gives you the latest Windows 8.1 ISO with Update 1 slipstreamed?

When I open a pdf file, my files are getting opened as a tiff file. This is making it difficult to cut and paste. This started happening to my computer after the Windows 8.1 download. I tried to uninstall 8.1 but created even more problems. Got everything back to normal, but the tiff files opening.

We planned to restore it to factory original, but wanted to boot to a Linux disk to copy his files first. In order to allow that, we went into Setup and disabled Fast Bios mode, disabled Secure Boot, and changed the OS mode from UEFI to CSM. We booted the Linux disk, copied his files, then reset all the Setup settings back. But now the computer will not boot at all, it shows the Samsung logo screen, then shuts itself off. We reset Setup to Optimized Defaults, made no change.
There does not seem to be any hardware failure since I can still boot to the Linux disk and see the hard drive if I make all the same changes that we made the first time around in Setup.
I was thrilled to see MS finally added the "copy path" function to the ribbon. To my dismay, it has suddenly stopped working. I can't think of any significant changes I've made to my system (no clipboard extenders recently added, etc.). If I use the SHIFT+right-click copy as path shell extension it works fine.

I downloaded my bank statement today and printed same. Print came out pretty small. Normally, on my windows XP pro, when I did this, the print was normal size, if I can say that. Usually it was a "fit-to-page" thing. I couldn't see a way to download the file and make any modifications. Also, in the past I was using Adobe Reader program. Wondering what program windows 8.1 is using and if I need to download and install the Adobe program and somehow set it as the default program.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have windows 8 with the upgrade. I bought this computer from someone who reinstalled the operating system so he could sell it. The root user name is John Doe. I adjusted settings and tried to rename with my name however the ROOT user is still John Doe. I've heard I can create a new account and "move" all my files to my new account, thus essentially renaming the computer. I've heard all that changes is the "pointer". Exactly, which files I need to move so I can delete the "John Doe" user?

I have just made a clean install of Windows 8 Pro. Then I installed a couple of apps. I noticed that at the root of Windows 8 drive there are only folders and no files shown such as bootmgr, BOOTNXT, etc.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have had this happen once before, I am running Windows 8 on an OCZ Vertex 4 SSD.The problem is that suddenly all my files inside all the directories and sub directories in my Documents folder have been moved to the root of Documents and have all been named with their original directory location in the filename. To give a clear example: a file originally located in Rockstar GamesL.A. Noiresettings.ini is now in my root Documents folder under the name Rockstar Games_L.A. Noire_settings.ini
All of the folders and sub-folders in my Documents are empty and all of the files are in Documents with those names. They all follow the pattern of having the directory in the filename separated by underscores . I have over 11K files now sitting in my Documents and all my programs that require files in my Documents folder are now broken.

Is there a tutorial here or somewhere on the net that will walk a person through using Windows 8 and the differences between 8 and 7?
For instance, although I haven't played with it much, I'm not sure how to get to the directory tree with Win 8...doesn't seem to be a link to "my Computer."
So recently I've been uploading my physical DVD's to my system to keep as backup and to watch here and there. In doing so I can access some of them, but others it says 'The directory name is invalid." They are all in the same directory (F:/Movies) and each is named the same (Name (year).)
I can however view these movies using XBMC, I just cant view, edit, move, rename or copy these from file explorer.
Should I create my own Wallpaper directory or somehow (not sure how) make this directory writeable since it is set up as read only and cannot be changed easily.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am trying to organize the files on my system, and am consistently butting heads against this problem. It always seems to be the last file I highlight. In other words.. I have two directories open on the screen, and am simply looking to drag files/folders from one directory to another. To do this, you almost always have to highlight the folder you want to move, and doing this seems to put a lock on that folder. If I highlight more folders, it seems to be ok, except for the last one I highlight will always fail to copy.
Any way to prevent windows from locking files in this way?
I recently got a new laptop and have just installed Windows 8 onto it clean, I then upgraded to 8.1. Everything has been running perfectly but the HDD has two partitions so I wanted to put all my personal documents and files on a separate partition to my programs and Windows.
I achieved this by creating a new Admin account and moving the user's folder to the other partition and then I modified the path to my personal documents via regedit. Everything went according to plan and works fine so far.
However, one side effect of doing this seems to be that the live search found by hovering over the right hand side of the screen is now incredibly slow. Even keystrokes into the search bar suffer from some kind of lag and once a search query has been input it takes around 20-30 seconds to display results.
I have logged into the temporary account I used to move my personal documents and the search is fine on that so I'm guessing it's something to do with having the account on a separate HDD partition to the Windows files and folders.
get my search back to it's original speed whilst still having my personal documents on separate partition to the Windows directory
